Online applications for the 20th Qatar Scientific Excellence Award will take place from October 1-31, the award’s Electronic System Committee has announced.Winners are due to be announced on February 1, 2027, with the awards ceremony scheduled for April 18, 2027.The timetable and application procedures were outlined at an introductory meeting on the award’s electronic system. Officials explained registration, access methods and eligible categories, and highlighted updates introduced for the new edition.The committee urged candidates to apply during the first one or two weeks of October, allowing enough time to obtain technical assistance and resolve any problems or queries before the deadline.Mohammed Suleiman, vice-chairman of the Electronic System Committee, said the award website provides guidance documents, nomination forms and details of the conditions and procedures for each category. Applications must be submitted through the electronic system, he said, while PDF files on the website are intended for reference only.A dedicated technical support service will receive enquiries and reports of system issues, with a specialised team aiming to resolve them within 48 hours. Teachers and principals at public and private schools may use their existing credentials, while private-school applicants without Ministry system access can register for a new account.Suleiman said the system automatically recognises an applicant’s details, personal identification number, and category, directing school-based applicants by grade level or education stage. Candidates outside the school system can choose from the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD categories.The Master’s and PhD sections now feature three classifications: Science, Engineering and Information Technology; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences. The change is intended to help applicants identify the field matching their specialisation and reduce errors during submission.Applicants may complete their forms in stages, save information and return to it before final submission. They can also edit details, cancel an application that has not been submitted, or begin a new one within the application period.The committee advised users to select “Save and Continue” after entering information under each criterion. The system flags mandatory fields and will not allow an application to be completed unless the user provides the minimum required information and supporting evidence.

Qatar Foundation (QF) schools continue to champion inclusive education and academic excellence, providing students from diverse backgrounds with multiple pathways to graduation, senior officials said at yesterday's graduation event.Mehdi Benchaabane, vice president, Pre-University Education (PUE), QF told the Gulf Times that QF’s educational ecosystem is very diverse and unique and the most remarkable thing is the inclusive cohort of students.Benchaabane said: "We have students who range from STEM graduates all the way to students with special needs with students from all walks of life. So we are an inclusive ecosystem and we make sure that we give an option to every student who walks into our schools.”According to the official, another special feature of QF PUE is the availability of multiple pathways to graduation. “Some of our schools offer the international baccalaureate diploma. We also have the international baccalaureate career pathway which is a vocational pathway. We have a high school diploma programme- a high school diploma with advanced placement and other programmes as well,” he explained.Benchaabane noted that most graduates are pursuing higher education at various universities in Qatar and abroad.“Students are still looking for their confirmation in universities but usually in the previous years, we have about 40% of the students who choose to travel abroad and 60% who stay in Qatar and I think this trend will continue this year too. Since the Covid-19 years, the number of students who stay in Qatar has grown significantly,” he continued.The vice president said that QF encourages students to pursue a broad range of academic specialisations. “Beyond academic achievement, the organisation places strong emphasis on preserving cultural identity, promoting national values, and developing bilingual proficiency both in Arabic and English. We want our students to be academically successful, rooted in their culture, and capable of engaging with both local and global issues," the official said.According to him, leadership development is another cornerstone of the Qatar Foundation educational model, as students are introduced to the principles of service leadership from an early age, learning to identify community needs and contribute positively to society.Meanwhile, Vijita Patel, executive director, Pre-University Education QF, specialising in inclusion, special educational needs and neurodiversity, highlighted that a spirit of inclusion and achievement marked the graduation ceremony as students from mainstream and special needs schools celebrated their accomplishments together in a unified event.Having spent the previous 25 years working in the United Kingdom, and with her first graduation event at Qatar Foundation, Patel said the event highlighted QF’s commitment to developing students academically, socially, and emotionally."It's really incredible to feel a unified graduation," she said. "What is fantastic is that we are able to observe the way the characteristics of our students are developed and celebrate not only their academic achievements but also their social and emotional growth."“The ceremony brought together graduates from diverse educational backgrounds, reflecting a shared focus on equipping young people with the interpersonal and life skills needed to succeed in a global society,” she continued.Patel explained that students requiring specialised educational support are identified through close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and health partners, including Sidra Medicine and other government healthcare institutions.She stated: “These partnerships help create personalised learning pathways supported by integrated therapeutic and clinical expertise. As more than 400 students graduating this year, 72 are from the special needs school. Many of them are expected to pursue higher education, vocational training programmes, or foundation courses designed to prepare them for university study.”"It is a very strong unified group of graduates. There is not a label of special needs on any of the graduates. They are holistically developed, and you can feel their self-confidence, their identity, and the way they recognise their culture and heritage alongside their peers from mainstream education," added Patel. 

Qatar is fast emerging as one of the Gulf's most attractive destinations for education investment, with its K-12 private sector alone valued at $3.24bn and the broader ecosystem — spanning higher education, vocational training, and edtech — poised to nearly double to $13.22bn by 2034.Such growth is supported mainly by the government's vision to invest across all education segments, alongside rising demand for educational services and a growing population — in particular the diverse expatriate communities that bring with them varied preferences for curricula and education systems.Accordingly, the country has successfully transformed its education sector from a traditional public service into one of its most important drivers of economic diversification, innovation, and human capital development. Qatar has invested heavily in educational infrastructure, higher education, scientific research, digital learning, and international academic partnerships over the past two decades, positioning itself as a leading regional centre for knowledge creation and advanced technology. The government has allocated QR21.8bn to the education sector in the 2026 state budget, a considerable annual increase from the QR19.4bn allocated in 2025.Recent public spending heavily targets infrastructure and facilities expansion, managed through a $1.1bn Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme under which the government is set to complete 45 new public schools. Under the National School Facilities Development Programme, eight schools have already been made operational, with 14 more opening in the next immediate phase. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education alone has allocated QR2.3bn for contracting tenders for 2026 to modernise public school infrastructure and operational equipment. Such investments pursue the realisation of the ministry's 2024–2030 strategy that prioritises digital transformation, artificial intelligence, STEM education, innovation, and labour market readiness.Education City, spanning around 12 sq km and developed by Qatar Foundation, is considered one of the largest educational infrastructure projects in the Middle East and serves as the cornerstone of Qatar's knowledge economy strategy. The campus hosts eight internationally recognised universities, thirteen schools and academies, research institutes, startup accelerators, innovation centres, and technology hubs, serving more than 10,000 students. Research and innovation have become increasingly important components of Qatar's education investment strategy. Through initiatives such as the Qatar National Research Fund, around $1.4bn has been allocated to research activities covering artificial intelligence, biotechnology, healthcare, cybersecurity, environmental sustainability, advanced engineering, and energy technologies.Private operators continue to invest in modern campuses equipped with advanced laboratories, digital classrooms, sports facilities, and smart learning technologies, creating attractive opportunities for investors and educational service providers as demand for high-end educational services grows within both the local and expatriate communities. Annual growth rates of the education sector are expected to remain between 6% and 7%, making it one of the country's fastest-growing non-hydrocarbon sectors. The combination of sustained government expenditure, demographic growth, technological adoption, and private-sector participation is expected to support continued expansion across all educational segments.In 2025, Invest Qatar launched a $1bn incentive programme aimed at attracting investments in advanced industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive, and electronics, besides artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and knowledge-based sectors. While not exclusively focused on education, the initiative is expected to accelerate the development of the broader innovation ecosystem and increase demand for highly skilled graduates and research capabilities.Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the most significant growth drivers within the education sector. Schools and universities across the country are expanding investments in smart classrooms, cloud-based learning platforms, learning management systems, digital assessment tools, and AI-enabled educational technologies. The increasing adoption of these solutions is creating opportunities for educational technology providers, software developers, cybersecurity firms, and digital content creators seeking to establish a presence in the Qatari market.Vocational education and professional training represent another fast-growing area, as the country's economic diversification drive generates demand for skilled professionals across technology, healthcare, logistics, financial services, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Several private training institutions offering certifications, executive education, technical skills development, and workforce upskilling programmes are
