The Qatar Olympic Academy successfully concluded its Sports Policies and Legal Frameworks in Sport course, held over three days from September 28 to 30, 2026, with the participation of professionals and stakeholders from the sports sector both within and outside the State of Qatar. Participants represented various governmental and private sector organisations and came from diverse professional and academic backgrounds.The course forms part of the Academy’s wide-ranging educational and training programs under its 2026 agenda, as well as its series of sports event management courses, a key area of focus this year. It reflects the Academy’s ongoing commitment to developing national and regional competencies and enhancing specialised knowledge in the fields of sports management and event organisation.The program also aimed to keep pace with the rapid development of the sports sector at both the local and international levels and to prepare professionals capable of addressing the organisational, administrative, and technical aspects associated with sporting events.The course was delivered by Thanasis Grigoropoulos, an international expert in sports management. Through a series of lectures and practical sessions, he addressed various topics related to sports policies and the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the management of sporting events. The course also highlighted international best practices in governance, operational planning, risk management, and legal responsibilities.The program focused on enhancing participants’ understanding of the policies and procedures governing major sporting events, while clarifying the key differences between policies and operational procedures and the role each plays in organising institutional work and defining responsibilities and authorities. This contributes to improving planning and implementation mechanisms and strengthening coordination and integration among stakeholders involved in sports event organisation.The lectures emphasised that the success of any sporting event depends not only on technical and logistical aspects but also on the existence of an integrated framework of policies, regulations, and operational procedures that ensures clarity of roles and responsibilities and provides an organisational structure capable of supporting decision-making and achieving objectives efficiently and effectively.The training program included a detailed review of governance principles and their application in sports event management. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of implementing modern governance standards as one of the fundamental pillars for the success of sports organisations and for enabling them to manage resources and operations more efficiently and transparently.The lecturer also discussed the importance of clearly defined roles and responsibilities within the sports management system, highlighting the need for well-established organisational structures that promote harmony among different teams and support timely decision-making throughout the various stages of event organisation.Grigoropoulos further explored the operational management of sports venues as a critical component of successful event delivery. The sessions reviewed the principles that ensure continuity of operations within sports facilities, mechanisms for coordination among departments, and best practices for addressing operational challenges and emergency situations that may arise during events.A significant portion of the course was dedicated to risk management and legal liability associated with sporting events. Participants examined practical models and case studies focused on handling potential risks before, during, and after an event.Discussions highlighted the importance of advance planning, contingency preparation, and crisis response strategies, in addition to understanding the legal responsibilities of organising bodies and methods for complying with relevant regulatory and legislative requirements. These elements strengthen the ability of sports professionals to make informed decisions and take appropriate action when needed.The course also covered several topics related to the legal and regulatory obligations accompanying different phases of sports event organisation, emphasising the importance of establishing work environments based on clear policies and approved procedures that enhance performance and support safe and efficient operations.Throughout the sessions, the lecturer stressed that modern sports event management requires a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between governance, policy, and operations. These elements form an integrated system that cannot be separated, and the success of any sporting event depends on the alignment between strategic planning and on-the-ground implementation.As part of the practical component, participants explored operational planning for sports venues and the organisation of various services during the hosting of sports competitions and events. They were introduced to a range of internationally recognised models used in sports facility management and operations.The concept of “Level of Service” was one of the key topics discussed during the course. Participants learned how to identify and assess the needs of different stakeholder groups associated with sporting events, including athletes, technical teams, administrators, sports officials, VIPs, spectators, and media representatives.Lectures highlighted the importance of aligning services with the needs of each group through careful planning of accommodation, transportation, accreditation, catering, security, and logistical support services, ensuring a comprehensive experience that contributes to the success of the event and meets stakeholder expectations.The course also presented a practical model for space allocation within a sports arena. The model included the designation of entry and exit points for different groups, athlete areas, media zones, VIP sections, spectator seating, and medical and operational facilities.The model demonstrated the importance of effective spatial planning in ensuring smooth movement throughout the venue, minimizing congestion and operational conflicts, and improving overall efficiency and coordination among event staff and working teams.Interactive sessions featured in-depth discussions on designing movement flows within sports facilities in a manner that meets safety, security, and operational efficiency requirements, while emphasising the strategic distribution of facilities and services to support seamless mobility and facilitate operational tasks.To bridge theory and practice, participants worked on operational policy templates that provided opportunities to learn about developing policies and procedures related to sports facility management and event organisation, translating theoretical concepts into practical and implementable actions.Practical workshops also addressed methods for defining responsibilities and allocating tasks within sports facilities, helping to ensure clarity of roles among departments and organisational units while enhancing the ability of sports institutions to achieve their operational and organisational objectives more effectively.The course underscored the importance of maintaining clear and continuously updated operational policies due to their role in improving service quality, enhancing work environments, strengthening resource management capabilities, and enabling organisations to respond effectively to changing circumstances and operational challenges during sporting events.This course reflects the Qatar Olympic Academy’s commitment to continuing its leading role in sports education and professional development through the provision of specialised training programs aligned with the latest global trends in sports management and major event organisation.It also demonstrates the Academy’s ongoing efforts to build the capacities of sports sector professionals and equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to address the growing challenges resulting from the continuous evolution of the sports industry, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of sports institutions and supporting organisational excellence.The course concluded by emphasising the importance of continuously developing the operational, legal, and administrative systems associated with sporting events and adopting international best practices in governance, risk management, and operational planning to ensure the highest standards of efficiency, organisation, and sustainability in future sports event management.The program represents an important step toward enabling participants to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between sports policies, legal frameworks, and practical implementation, thereby enhancing their readiness to contribute effectively to the organisation and management of sporting events in accordance with professional standards that support the growing ambitions of Qatar’s sports sector.

Syrian President Ahmad Al Sharaa said Syria is laying the foundations for a new phase of state-building, with efforts focused on establishing new institutions, reshaping the country's political and legal framework and restoring its place in the region.Speaking at an Atlantic Council event in New York, President Al Sharaa said Syria is building a new army and state institutions, reviewing existing laws, and drafting a new constitution.The Syrian President noted that Israel continues to carry out attacks, incursions, arrests, and bombardments inside Syria, stressing that the Golan is Syrian territory and that Damascus has chosen the diplomatic path to address these violations.Addressing the foreign military presence in Syria, Al Sharaa said the number of Russian bases has been reduced from around 170 bases to two, with the remaining bases converted into training facilities for the Syrian army. He added that the Turkish military presence was being regulated within legal frameworks.Al Sharaa also discussed Syria's relations with the United States and regional countries, as well as issues related to reconstruction, economic recovery and investment. He stressed the importance of lifting sanctions and creating the conditions necessary for Syria to re-engage with the regional and international community. 

 Doha Fashion Summit organisers are planning events across the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) and in London, building on a Qatar showcase that brought together international designers and models from 12 countries this month.  Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the “Threads of Fashion” event in Doha on September 18, producer and organiser Mansoor Abdul Majeed outlined a longer-term ambition to take such an event around the world, beginning with the GCC. He said auditions were held in Riyadh in August, with an initial meeting planned for October.  Oman, Bahrain, Dammam and London, he noted, were also among the destinations he was considering.“This is our third edition in Qatar,” Abdul Majeed said, adding that the first edition was held under the name “International Designer League”, followed by a second event in January before the change to “Doha Fashion Summit”.  “This is our major event,” he said, describing a wider events business that has organised musical programmes, trade shows and corporate functions.He highlighted the participation of designers and models from different countries as a feature of this edition.  For event partner Abdul Wahid, creative director of Guidance Events, the attraction was an opportunity to work in a field he believes has room for more events in Qatar.“Mostly we are doing corporate events,” he said, stressing that his company, which he identified as Guidance Event Management Company, had been operating in Qatar for “almost 10 years”.Wahid said fashion shows of this kind were comparatively rare in Qatar, which had influenced the decision to join the summit.“That’s why we selected this kind of fashion show event with Doha Fashion Summit,” he pointed out.  Wahid said interest in fashion was encouraging his company to pursue further projects: “Our next step is we have one project in Saudi Arabia, also in Oman, also London we are planning.”The Doha programme brought together international collections and locally based talent.According to the organisers, models representing 12 countries took part.  Among the designers were Doha-based Filipino Ramon Elorta Sarmiento of Rosabella Fashion, Ukrainian Mishel Jaan of Diva Boutique, French designer Laila Allaoui Ouadah of Colour Your Mood Design, and Japan’s Shinobu Harima of S. Shieno.  The line-up included Vesti by Martha Rodriquez, Sonya Styles by Sonya Gurung, Khanfir by Yossra Khanfir, and Calypso by Natascha Asselstine and Monisha Sikka.The Rosabella Wedding Collection was accompanied by harpist Hristina.  Other presentations included the Filipino Fashion Designers of Qatar, Sinag Fashion Campers and designers Sreerupa Mitra and Meenu Prasad.Alongside Guidance Events, event partners included Shafi Parakal of Rehaab Media and Mon Sarmiento of Tala Digital Media, Advertising and Events.LuLu Hypermarket was the title sponsor. JRtistic Women Beauty Salon provided the hair and makeup services.  The Golden Falcon Awards recognised achievements in entrepreneurship, style, digital influence and marketing.  Honourees included Amal Ameen al-Mehain for entrepreneurship, Mariam Ammar for style coaching, Ahmed Saif Alnoufali, known as Ahmed Pato, for digital influence, Qatar Living for its social media platform and Sara Chatila for marketing.  Iris Rodriguez received a lifetime achievement award, while Farhan al-Sheikh al-Sayed and Khalid Abdul Rehman Fakhroo were also honoured for supporting the summit, according to the organisers.

US law enforcement Tuesday said it had foiled a plot to attack the White House during a crowded mixed martial arts event attended by President Donald Trump and other top officials."Thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold," FBI Director Kash Patel announced on X.His post included a caption of a Fox News headline reading: "FBI disrupts alleged explosive-drone plot targeting White House UFC event, officials say."Trump on Sunday joined thousands of fans at the unprecedented White House fights, where a temporary arena dubbed "The Claw" was erected on the South Lawn.Fox News reported that five people had been taken into custody, according to unnamed US officials, with investigators identifying 23 people in a "potential network of plotters" who allegedly communicated in a Signal group chat.The plan allegedly would have involved using drones to hit buildings near the White House during the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contest, thereby prompting a mass evacuation that would "steer crowds toward a pre-staged sniper team," Fox News said.There were also allegedly plans to storm the White House gates with a "second wave," the report said.It was not clear if people involved in the alleged plot had taken any steps to carry out an attack. The White House is protected by intense surveillance, fencing, checkpoints, anti-air-attack capabilities, snipers and a permanent group of quick-reaction forces.Asked for further details about Patel's announcement, the FBI told AFP "we have nothing to add to the post at this time."The June 14 "UFC Freedom 250" event — which also fell on Trump's 80th birthday — was meant to kick off this year's festivities for the 250th anniversary of US independence.Fox News reported that the FBI learned of the threat on June 10."Protective intelligence cases are on the rise, and our teams work tirelessly behind the scenes to investigate threats, identify those responsible and ensure accountability," the US Secret Service said in a statement on X."In the days leading up to this weekend, our special agents, mission support personnel, and technical security teams worked around the clock to identify those responsible and hold them accountable," Secret Service Director Sean Curran said.Trump has faced several assassination attempts in recent years, most recently when a gunman attempted to storm a White House press gala he was attending in April.US Vice President JD Vance, who also attended the UFC event, said Tuesday morning in an appearance on Fox News that he had just learned about the alleged plot.Asked why the FBI revealed the foiled plot — a step it does not always take for various security reasons — Vance pointed to potential "scale of the planned attack."He described the alleged plan as a "coordinated planned terrorist plot" and cited the Trump administration's work to investigate funding and coordination networks of radical left-wing groups.Vance did not provide further details on who the alleged suspects were or their motivations, but nonetheless accused Democrats of fomenting violence with anti-Trump rhetoric."Everybody has a role to cut this stuff out, but I think a lot of my Democratic colleagues in Washington have got to look themselves in the mirror and say, 'why is so much of this political violence coming from our side of the spectrum?'" he said.The White House has repeatedly claimed that Trump critics and the media are responsible for rising political tension in the country. Opponents of Trump say the 80-year-old Republican's often inflammatory rhetoric against opponents, immigrants and the election system are to blame.

Canadian Richard T. Lee continued to have the sharpest game at the LIV Golf Promotions event, taking a two-shot lead into the final day at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla.Lee, who led after the first ‌day Thursday before scores were reset for the final 36 holes ‌on Saturday and Sunday, shot ‍a 6-under 64 on Saturday after rounds of 64 and 66. He birdied par-4 holes Nos. ⁠2, 7 12, 14 and 15 ⁠as well as the par-5 No. 9 in his bogey-free round on Saturday."Honestly, I ‍don't think it would be comfortable for any player to have a two- shot lead on the last day," said Lee, who has two eagles, 13 birdies and just one bogey in his 54 competitive holes this week that included advancing out of both the first and second rounds. "I'll just put my hat on and just play my golf."Lee has carded two eagles, ‌13 birdies and a lone bogey in 54 holes this week.A three-way tie for second at 4-under consists of American Anthony Kim, South Africa's Oliver Bekker and Thailand's Jazz ‍Janewattananond.Kim posted the other bogey-free ⁠round of the ‌day, which featured birdies at Nos. 9, 13, 14 and 16.Bekker's round included a bogey at 14 and birdies at Nos. 3, 9, 13, 16 and 18. Janewattanond bogeyed the par-4 No. 3 as well as No. 10 but countered with birdies at No. 4, 5, 7, 9, 13 and 16.The top three finishers at the four-round event will be awarded full-season, wild-card spots for the 2026 LIV Golf League season, and each of the top 10 finishers plus ties will be exempt for the 2026 International Series co- sponsored by the Asian Tour.Lucas Bjerregaard of Denmark carded ​a 3-under 67 to be ‌alone in fifth. A two- time winner on the DP World Tour, he said earning full-time LIV Golf ⁠status would change his career."Where I ‍am in my career right now," the 34-year-old said, "it's probably that or retirement. Yeah, that would mean a lot for sure."Kim was among several players who received an exemption into the second round, while others began Thursday with a play-in round. The former wunderkind from California, now 40, returned from a 12-year hiatus from the ​game (2012-24) when he competed on the LIV circuit as a wild card in 2024, and again in 2025.But he was relegated at the end of the 2025 season and is trying to earn his way back."I have an opportunity to get one of those spots," said Kim, the only American to advance to the weekend, said on Saturday. "That's what I asked for coming into this week and put myself in good position. Now I've just got to go finish."Kim made ⁠an 8-foot birdie putt on his final hole Friday to make the cut on the number and make the 22-player field for the weekend.
