Summit powers economic drive: GCO

Web Summit Qatar has become a powerful catalyst for the country’s innovation-driven economy, reinforcing its position as a global platform for technology, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation, His Excellency Sheikh Jassim bin Mansour bin Jabor al-Thani, director of the Government Communications Office (GCO), said at a news conference at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre Sunday.  Speaking about the momentum shift, Sheikh Jassim said revenue from previous editions of the Web Summit exceeded QR800mn, including more than QR330mn in spending by individuals who travelled to Qatar to attend the summit. “More than 66,000 hotel nights were booked, with visitors staying an average of six days.  We expect these figures to go up in 2026 and we will continue building on this momentum,” said Sheikh Jassim. “Some of the goals we have set for 2026 event include expanding this conference and making it more comprehensive and more international.  We will host the participation of more than 1,600 startups at the Web Summit Qatar, which will be the largest gathering of startups in a single venue in the region,” he underlined. Sheikh Jassim also highlighted that, before hosting conferences in Doha, an extensive study is conducted to determine how such events can add real value to the country and the private sector. “The report we published last week confirms that this conference is a positive contributor to the economy.  Indicators such as hotel occupancy and visitor spending clearly show the significant benefits for the private sector and the strong activation of tourism facilities. “Since the first edition, we have seen nearly a 90% increase in startups, with an even greater rise in local startups this year. Qatari startups are now competing strongly with international companies, and this conference provides substantial value to the local economy through direct engagement with major global firms.  We remain committed to providing even greater support to Qatari startups,” he said. The GCO director said the summit will feature more than 600 speakers, investors, media figures and key decision-makers from around the world.  According to Sheikh Jassim, the most prominent Qatari speakers at the event include Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation; His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Her Excellency Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and several Qatari ministers.  “We want to see how this conference generates an economic return for the country, local companies, and all participating companies,” Sheikh Jassim added. Addressing the press conference, Web Summit founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave said the scale of the Doha event has exceeded initial expectations. “This year’s edition is the biggest event we have done so far in Qatar.  We had initially committed to Doha that in the first year we would bring 5,000 people together and by the fifth year the event would reach 12,000. That was the aspiration at the initial stage,” Cosgrave noted. “This year, we will have more than 30,000 attendees from all over the world and there will be a more diverse representation with many countries for the first time here.  There are attendees and startups representing countries such as Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Pakistan and The Netherlands among others,” he continued. “It is a true global group. We have more startups than ever before. Nearly 85% of the 1,600 startups at the event are from outside Qatar,” he highlighted. According to the Web Summit CEO, this edition of Web Summit Qatar will feature more investors than any previous edition, with an expanded programme of meetups and networking sessions throughout the four-day event.

QDB, GEN to host Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Doha in September

Qatar Development Bank (QDB), in partnership with the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), officially announced that Doha will host the ‘Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) Doha 2026’. The four-day event will take place on September 21-24, 2026, at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC). The announcement follows the signing of an agreement between QDB and GEN on the sidelines of the 65th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Doha edition is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants, including entrepreneurs, investors, experts, representatives of financial institutions, and government decision-makers from over 200 countries and organisations worldwide. Participants will engage in in-depth dialogue on entrepreneurship, investment, cross-border collaboration, sectoral innovation, startup growth pathways, and public policies that support sustainable growth. The event will be held in partnership with QDB’s Rowad Entrepreneurship Conference, building on its strong track record in supporting Qatar’s entrepreneurship ecosystem and reinforcing its position as the nation’s leading entrepreneurship event. QDB CEO Abdulrahman bin Hesham al-Sowaidi said: “We look forward to welcoming the global entrepreneurial community of leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors to participate in high-level international dialogue that translates into collaboration, co-ordination, and partnerships that stimulate economic development across the region and globally. This milestone further reinforces Qatar’s position as a hub for economic cooperation and innovation, and as a launchpad for innovative ideas and cross-border entrepreneurship.” GEN founder and president Jonathan Ortmans said: “Qatar brings together rare conditions: a clear strategic vision, recognised execution capabilities and an international positioning that fosters dialogue and co-operation. GEC Doha 2026 continues to underscore the role of the Congress as a global reference platform, capable of generating structured collaboration and concrete outcomes for entrepreneurial ecosystems.” In a statement announcing its partnership with QDB, the GEN emphasised Qatar’s constructive role in advancing economic development and supporting entrepreneurship through its strong capacity for strategic co-ordination among stakeholders, effective implementation of strategies, and ability to forge impactful partnerships. Through hosting the congress, Doha aims to contribute to the development of a global economic ecosystem in which entrepreneurship serves as a central pillar for co-operation, investment, and ecosystem growth. Hosting the global event reflects the significant progress Qatar has achieved in developing its entrepreneurship ecosystem and enhancing its competitiveness in attracting innovative projects and ideas, in line with the objectives of the Third National Development Strategy 2024–2030. The milestone builds on the success of the Rowad Entrepreneurship Conference at the local level. Its eleventh edition, held last year, recorded notable achievements and was recognised as one of the most prominent and impactful events supporting entrepreneurship at both the local and regional levels. Building on this momentum, QDB continues to leverage this pioneering experience by hosting one of the world’s largest entrepreneurship-focused events, opening new and unprecedented horizons for collaboration and coordination with the global entrepreneurial community.

QDB concludes 11th Rowad Entrepreneurship Conference

QDB doubles investment packages to attract global startups to Doha

Qatar Development Bank (QDB) announced a major expansion of its support for entrepreneurs at the 11th edition of the Rowad Entrepreneurship Conference, unveiling new investment packages designed to attract global startups to Doha.Speaking at the conference’s opening ceremony, QDB CEO Abdulrahman bin Hesham al-Sowaidi said: “I am pleased to announce the doubling of investment packages: up to QR4mn for seed stage companies and up to QR20mn for growth stage companies. This programme serves as a bridge for outstanding startups worldwide to establish in Qatar and expand globally.”Al-Sowaidi emphasised that entrepreneurship in Qatar has evolved into a national endeavour, supported by the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3). He noted that the private sector’s role in venture capital “is expanding rapidly.”“Last year, private sector participation reached 57% of total venture capital investments. We continue our journey towards achieving the national target of 70% by 2030,” he explained.QDB’s investment arm now ranks fourth among the most active investors in the Middle East and North Africa, with direct and indirect investments exceeding “QR350mn.” The bank has also tripled the value of single co-investment deals to “QR11mn,” strengthening partnerships with local and international funds.Al-Sowaidi highlighted QDB’s partnerships with the Qatar Investment Authority’s (QIA) Fund of Funds programme, including the launch of the HealthTech Accelerator with Deerfield’s Cure programme, which connects Doha and New York. He also pointed to the creation of Qatar’s first venture building studio, The studio, in collaboration with Utopia Capital Management.Capacity building initiatives have also been central to QDB’s strategy. More than 220 angel investors have been accredited through a programme with the Qatar Finance and Business Academy, paving the way for deeper engagement in venture capital across the region.“Aligned with Qatar’s ambition to be a launchpad rather than just a destination, we introduced the Startup Qatar Investment Programme. In just two years, it has supported more than 35 companies with investments exceeding QR130mn,” al-Sowaidi said.Al-Sowaidi stressed that digitalisation is now essential for competitiveness. QDB has rolled out a Digital Transformation programme, introduced the Smart Industry Readiness Index (SIRI) for self-assessment, and provided grants and financing to support companies in adopting advanced technologies.He cited figures from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) showing that 81% of early-stage entrepreneurs in Qatar rely on modern technology, evidence of the ecosystem’s ability to keep pace with global trends. QDB has also launched the Talent Community Programme, benefitting more than 50 entrepreneurs across 30 local and international companies, al-Sowaidi pointed out.He said this year’s Rowad conference gathered more than 120 local and international companies, 15 panel discussions, 45 workshops, and 28 startups competing to showcase their projects.“We stand at a moment where entrepreneurship moves from the margins to the centre of the economic system. The private sector is playing an increasingly vital role in driving development,” emphasised al-Sowaidi, who urged entrepreneurs and investors to seize the opportunity for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and deep partnerships.

Qatar Chamber hosts ‘High-Level Arab Event on Persons with Disabilities, Entrepreneurship and Innovation’

The Qatar Chamber hosted the ‘High-Level Arab Event on Persons with Disabilities, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation’, which concluded Saturday in Doha.The event featured the ‘Third Session of the Living Independently Initiative for Persons with Disabilities’ and the ‘Arab Exhibition for Productive Families’ held on the sidelines of the recently held ‘Second World Summit for Social Development’.The event was held by the Union of Arab Chambers and the General Secretariat of the Arab League – Social Affairs Sector (Department of Social Development and Policies, Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs), in coordination with the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) – Bahrain Office, and in collaboration with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and the Arab Labour Organisation.The event was attended by Qatar Chamber first vice chairman Mohammed bin Towar al-Kuwari; Dr Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity and Chairperson of the Executive Bureau of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs; Mohammed bin Saleh al-Alawi, Minister of Social Development of Bahrain and chair of the 44th Session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs; Dr Khaled Hanafy, secretary general of the Union of Arab Chambers; Ambassador Hossam Zaki, assistant secretary general and head of the Office of the secretary general of the League of Arab States;Wafaa Bani Mustafa, Minister of Social Development of Jordan; Mohammed Hassan al-Obaidli, director general of the Executive Bureau of the Council of Ministers of Labour and Social Affairs in the Gulf States; and Minister Plenipotentiary Tarek al-Nabulsi, director of the Department of Development and Social Policies at the League of Arab States.Attendees toured the exhibition, which showcased a variety of products made by people with disabilities, including accessories, handicrafts, silverware, wickerwork, traditional clothing, ceramics, and other handmade goods. The exhibition featured the participation of 25 exhibitors representing Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, Sudan, Palestine, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Iraq.Speaking at the opening of the third session of the Living Independently Initiative, al-Kuwari emphasised that the initiative presents a valuable opportunity to enhance the integration of persons with disabilities into the labour market and to highlight the importance of supporting productive families while contributing to the growth, development, and sustainability of their enterprises.He added that Qatar pays great attention to persons with disabilities and seeks to enhance their effective participation in various areas of social, economic, and educational life, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. He emphasised that Qatar has adopted an integrated system of national legislation and policies that guarantee the rights of persons with disabilities, support their integration into society, and enable them to work and contribute to development.Al-Kuwari also underscored Qatar Chamber’s commitment to empowering productive families, promoting small entrepreneurship, and supporting initiatives that enhance the productive capabilities of families and home-based businesses. He noted that the Chamber strives to provide platforms that allow these families to showcase and market their products both locally and internationally.He further emphasised the chamber’s encouragement of integrating persons with disabilities into suitable jobs within the private sector, noting that this aligns with the efforts of other national entities working to promote inclusion and equal opportunity in the country.
