The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is preparing to implement a new package of infrastructure and public service projects, including fire safety upgrades at 50 additional schools, the construction of new classrooms at 16 schools and the development of storage facilities for the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE).The projects are part of the authority’s second package of development works and are outlined in the State’s Internal Achievements Book for 2025-2026. The planned works also include the demolition and reconstruction of two schools, Muadh bin Jabal School and Rawdat Rashid School, alongside improvements to the facilities of the Community College of Qatar in Lusail for both male and female students.The college project will cover the renovation and maintenance of facades, entrances, courtyards, boundary walls and gates, while the authority will also undertake the development of sports facilities under its second package in preparation for the Asian Games Doha 2030. Another project involves the development of Ras Laffan Hospital as part of efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and public facilities.Further, Ashghal, in co-ordination with the Ministry of Finance, plans to tender several new projects covering sports facilities, healthcare centres, maintenance works and new buildings. The proposed tenders are intended to support infrastructure development and improve the operational efficiency of public facilities.Urban beautification remains another major component of the authority’s upcoming programme. Plans include the construction of an outdoor air-conditioned walkway and landscaping works at Qatar University, aimed at improving the campus environment and pedestrian facilities. The authority also intends to establish six parks, known locally as neighborhoods parks, in Umm Al Abiriya, Umm Qarn, Al Khor, Al Dhakhira, Al Saja and Al Thumama.Landscaping and beautification works are planned around the Passports Building in Al Tarfa and the Civil Defence Building in Al Jumailiyah. The programme also includes the construction of a pedestrian walkway around Al Karaana Village to improve walking facilities for residents. Additional projects include the design, supply and installation of lighting for the Unity Arch, as well as the establishment of an advanced nursery in Al Thumama.In addition, Ashghal plans to tender contracts for the design of several parks and implement park construction projects during 2026 and 2027. Further contracts will cover landscaping, irrigation and associated support works.Alongside physical infrastructure development, Ashghal is planning to introduce digital technologies to improve the management and performance of essential networks. One of the key initiatives is the implementation of digital twin technology for drainage networks. The system is intended to support asset management, enable more proactive performance analysis and improve operational efficiency by providing better insights into network conditions and potential maintenance requirements.The authority also plans to establish a solar power station with a capacity of 2.2 megawatts at the North Doha Station, as part of efforts to improve energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable energy in infrastructure operations. Further measures include expanding the deployment of LED lighting and smart lighting systems to reduce energy consumption and improve the management of public lighting infrastructure. 

Doha's hosting of the 2030 Asian Games underscores Qatar's commitment to investing in emerging talent and honing their skills by providing competitive platforms that allow young athletes to showcase their potential, while opening new horizons for their development and enhancement of their performance levels. In this context, the inaugural edition of the 2026 Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Doha from Nov 18 to 22, stands out. Aimed at the 12-17 age group and held under the theme "Towards a Sporting Generation... and a Promising Future", the event serves as an initiative to discover emerging talent and encourage their participation in physical and competitive activities, ultimately helping to broaden the base of sports engagement. Speaking on this occasion, Director of the 2026 Youth Games, Hind al-Ibrahim, stated in an interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the Games represent a vital platform for identifying promising athletic talent by offering participants the chance to demonstrate their abilities in a competitive environment. She noted that outstanding athletes will be monitored in coordination with relevant authorities to explore how their potential can be harnessed, integrating them into training programs and future development plans, thereby increasing their prospects of representing the State of Qatar in upcoming sporting events. She explained that the organizing committee maintains continuous coordination with relevant sports federations and specialized technical committees to monitor performance, evaluate technical proficiency, and assess whether athletes possess the necessary attributes for development in shooting, archery, and padel. Furthermore, the focus on younger age groups reflects Qatar Olympic Committee's commitment to building a sustainable sporting foundation. This goes beyond merely increasing participation in physical activities; it extends to identifying promising talent, refining their skills, and providing pathways for them to advance their technical and competitive capabilities, ultimately supporting the future of Qatari sports. Al-Ibrahim noted that Doha's hosting of the 2030 Asian Games adds further significance to these efforts, as the goal is to prepare a generation of athletes with the experience and ability to compete on major stages. She emphasized that investing in talent from an early age is a cornerstone for securing a bright sporting future and strengthening Qatar's presence in regional, continental, and international events. The tournament features competitions in shooting, archery, and padel, a diverse range of sports that allows participants to test their abilities across different disciplines. It offers young talent the opportunity to showcase their potential in a competitive environment, paving the way for them to reach higher levels of athletic performance and excellence, serving as a milestone step toward preparing a new generation equipped to compete in future events. 

 Hazy skies and warm weather set the scene along Doha’s Corniche yesterday, where traditional wooden boats lined the waterfront, and the city’s shaded roads and green spaces offered a glimpse of the capital’s outdoor appeal.  The views were a reminder that a weekend outing need not involve travelling far from home. From a leisurely walk along the bay to an evening spent exploring the city’s cultural attractions, families have plenty of options to make the most of their time off.  Yesterday, the Department of Meteorology forecast hot daytime conditions with occasional clouds, following hazy to misty conditions in some places early in the day. Some clouds were expected overnight into Saturday.  For those planning to head outdoors, the Corniche remains an appealing choice, with its waterfront views, open promenade and traditional wooden boats. The area offers opportunities for a family stroll, photography or simply taking a break from the pace of the city.  Doha’s parks and shaded green spaces offer another setting for families, particularly those with young children. As the weather remains hot, however, visitors are advised to carry water, seek shade and plan outdoor activities for the cooler hours of the day.  Families looking to combine a walk with a cultural outing can head to Katara Cultural Village, while Souq Waqif offers a chance to wander through traditional alleyways, browse local shops and enjoy a meal.  For those who would rather spend time by the sea, Qatar’s beaches provide another option, subject to local access arrangements and conditions.  Early mornings and evenings are generally better suited to outdoor activities during hot weather. Although occasional clouds may soften the bright skies, they should not be taken as a sign that temperatures will drop significantly.  Whether it is a stroll beside the water, an afternoon in a shaded park or an evening exploring one of Doha’s popular destinations, a little planning can help families enjoy the weekend while staying comfortable in the heat. 

Doha 3x3 Basketball Team concluded its campaign in the qualification stage of the 2026 Macau World Tour with an 18-16 victory over France’s Bordeaux in its second game on Saturday, October 17, in Macau, China. The result came after the team had lost its opening game to Taipei Wan Bao 13-19.Doha Team began its journey in Pool B against Taipei Wan Bao but was unable to overcome its opponent. The team rebounded in its second game with a hard-fought two-point win against Bordeaux, finishing the qualification round with one win and one loss.The Doha Team roster featured Mubarak Gama, Mohammed Hashem, Dejan Ganjic, and Mahmoud Darwish. The team competed in a three-team group, with the group winner securing a place in the main draw of the World Tour event.The victory over Bordeaux provided a positive conclusion to Doha Team’s qualifying campaign, demonstrating the squad’s competitiveness in a closely contested game decided by just two points, following its earlier defeat to Taipei Wan Bao.The Macau World Tour is being held on October 17 and 18, featuring 16 teams from around the world competing for the tournament title and a total prize purse of $185,000. The event is part of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour series, which attracts some of the strongest teams in international 3x3 basketball. Under the competition format, the qualification stage consisted of groups of three teams, with each group winner advancing to the main draw of 12 teams. The tournament also features several prominent teams, including Serbia’s Ub and the Netherlands’ Amsterdam Rabobank, alongside other internationally recognized contenders.Doha Team’s participation forms part of Qatar basketball’s ongoing presence in international 3x3 competitions, providing players with valuable opportunities to compete against top international teams and gain further experience at the highest level. 

Fatma Sultan al-Kuwari, CEO of the Doha 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid Committee, has highlighted Qatar’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, emphasising the potential of the event to create a lasting legacy that extends beyond sports infrastructure and venues.Al-Kuwari said Qatar had strong reasons to pursue its ambition, pointing to the country’s experience in hosting major sporting events and the skills and knowledge gained through organising international competitions. In a post on Qatar International Media Office platform, she noted that the Doha 2036 bid is currently in the continuous dialogue phase, during which interested bidding entities explore their ambitions and determine when they intend to pursue hosting the Games.According to al-Kuwari, the legacy of hosting a major sporting event should not be measured solely by infrastructure or sporting facilities, but also by its impact on individuals and communities. She highlighted the opportunities such events create for young people to discover sports, volunteers to gain new knowledge and experience, and athletes to compete and achieve their first victories. “We want the Games to really transform every individual that lives in Qatar and in the region,” al-Kuwari said.She added that the proposed Games could demonstrate how sport and culture can inspire hope and drive positive change around the world. Reaffirming confidence in Qatar’s ability to deliver major international events, al-Kuwari said the country consistently fulfils its commitments.Qatar’s bid ambition reflects a broader vision of using the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a platform to encourage participation in sport, develop skills, empower communities and create a lasting legacy for future generations. 

Crafting Design Futures residency, developed by Design Doha as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, joined Design Week Mexico’s Visión y Tradición programme, bringing four designers from Qatar and the wider Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region into collaboration with Mexican master artisans.  Open at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City until November 1, 2026, Visión y Tradición forms part of Design Week Mexico 2026 (DWM26), developed this year around the theme “Perspectives from the Global South.” The programme brings together international designers with Mexican creators, placing exchange, shared making and different forms of creative knowledge at the centre of the exhibition.  Through Crafting Design Futures, four collaborations explored glass engraving, clay, ceramics and hand-hammered copper. Syrian designer Kenan Alkuwatly worked with master engraver José Cruz; Lebanese designer and multidisciplinary artist Shirine Sbaiti with ceramic artisans Norberto y Rosi; Qatar-based Iranian designer Yasamin Shaikhi with Estudio Guerrero; and British-Indian architect and designer Armaan Bansal with Alan Pureco’s family workshop.  The residency encouraged each pair to develop the work together. Initial ideas changed through the process of making as designers encountered techniques, materials and knowledge built through years, and in some cases generations, of practice. The resulting objects reflect not only the designers’ original concepts, but the creative contribution of the artisans and the conversations between them.  Fahad al-Obaidly, Director of Design Doha, said: “One of the most important lessons of Crafting Design Futures is that craft is not simply a means of producing a designer’s idea. It is knowledge in its own right. We ask our designers to enter these workshops ready to listen and to allow the artisan’s experience to change their thinking and ultimately the object itself. That requires time, which is perhaps one of the greatest luxuries we have today. In a world where design is increasingly shaped by digital tools and speed, working directly with materials and with people who have spent decades understanding them gives designers a very different perspective on value, authorship and collaboration. It also teaches a more responsible way of working with craft communities by building something together.”  This approach is reflected across several Years of Culture programmes taking place in Doha this fall, marking a key moment in the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture. The programme highlights a shared interest in how traditional knowledge can inform contemporary creative practice, particularly as Qatar continues to invest in preserving its own heritage while developing its creative and design sectors.  Expanded Tradition, curated by Ana Elena Mallet and opening at M7 on 27 October, brings together makers from across Mexico who are reinterpreting inherited techniques through contemporary practice, from silver filigree and natural dyes to textiles and lacquerware. Acclaimed chef Elena Reygadas brings Panadería Rosetta to the Doha Design District, accompanied by Perla Valtierra’s handmade ceramics.  The programme continues with Fernando Laposse’s The Sower, opening during the Design Doha Biennale, connecting Mexican and Qatari traditions through a wider exploration of ways traditional knowledge can inspire new creative possibilities. 

Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced 22 films for the International Short Film Competition at Doha Film Festival (DFF) 2026, taking place from Nov. 19 to 27.Spanning cultures, continents and cinematic approaches, the selection of 2 world premieres and 19 MENA premieres bring together emerging and established filmmakers whose distinctive perspectives illuminate personal experiences, collective histories and the complexities of a changing world.The selection includes For The Opponents by Federico Luis, winner of the Short Film Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2026 and A Few Moments of Happiness by Shaden Safieddine Tazi, winner of the Best Short Film in the 2026 Venice Film Festival Orizzonti section, alongside a rich cross-section of international cinema and compelling stories from the Arab world. From the realities of life in Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan and Yemen to the Peruvian Amazon and rural Indonesia, the selected films reflect the vitality of short-form filmmaking as a space for experimentation, discovery and urgent storytelling.The competition will be evaluated by an international jury comprising French-Moroccan producer Karim Aitouna; Malaysian filmmaker Amanda Nell Eu, director of Tiger Stripes, which received the Cannes Critics' Week Grand Prize and was supported by Doha Film Institute; and Swiss-Rwandan actress and filmmaker Kayije Kagame. Bringing together diverse creative practices and international perspectives, the jury will deliberate on the selection to recognise outstanding achievements in short-form cinema, assessing the films' artistic vision, originality and storytelling.Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, Festival Director and CEO of Doha Film Institute, said: "Short films give filmmakers the freedom to take creative risks, challenge conventions and bring fresh perspectives to the screen. They are a powerful reminder that cinema does not need to be bound by scale to leave a lasting impact. At Doha Film Festival, we champion this spirit of bold experimentation and discovery."This year's International Short Film Competition celebrates the diversity and creative power of independent cinema. The selected films are deeply rooted in their communities while speaking to experiences that transcend borders and we look forward to welcoming these voices to Doha."The three-member jury will acknowledge excellence in short-form filmmaking with prizes including the Best Film Award (US$20,000), Best Director Award (US$12,000), Best Performance Award (US$7,000) and a Special Mention Certificate.

 The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) marked World Mental Health Day with a campus-wide programme that encouraged students to express themselves, connect with others, and explore practical ways to support their mental health and well-being.  Organised by the Student Counselling and Accessibility Services Department, the event featured a range of creative, interactive activities designed to promote inclusivity among students and raise mental health awareness.  A key highlight was the Art and Photography Exhibition, featuring entries from the “Your Voice, Your Story, Your Well-being” competition. The exhibition provided students with an opportunity to express their understanding of mental health and the challenges they face through creative art. The following entries took first and second place in recognition of their creative contributions: The Trap I Wove by Donna Grace Ziganay, taking first place, and The Pulse Behind Silence by Dalal Humran, taking second place.  Students also took part in a variety of activities, including meaningful discussions, introductions to available support services and resources, and several competitions.  Commenting on the initiative, Fahad al-Hajri, vice president, Student Affairs, UDST, said: “Mental health is an integral part of health and well-being in its broader sense. At the University of Doha for Science and Technology, we believe that mental health is an essential part of the university student experience and a key contributor to students’ development and success.  Educational institutions have a responsibility to promote this approach, foster an environment that supports students’ mental well-being, and provide appropriate services to help them overcome the challenges they may face. We are pleased to organise this event, along with other activities throughout the academic year, to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and highlight the resources and services offered by the University to support our students in this area.”  World Mental Health Day is part of UDST’s 2025–2027 Wellness Strategy, promoting awareness and encouraging healthy practices across mental, physical and social wellbeing.  The Student Counselling and Accessibility Services Department provides counselling, support, and resources to help students navigate academic and personal challenges. The University also offers a range of sport and recreational facilities, including fitness centres, swimming pools, and sports courts, giving the community opportunities to participate in physical and recreational activities and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. 

 HEC Paris, Doha is further strengthening its faculty and expanding its academic footprint in Qatar with the appointment of Professor Mohammadamin Yousefi as Assistant Professor of Organisation Theory.  Professor Yousefi joins HEC Paris, Doha from the Netherlands, bringing expertise in strategy, entrepreneurship, and organisation theory, along with extensive international academic experience. His academic engagements include a visiting scholar position at Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, and guest lecturing at Amsterdam Business School. He holds a PhD in Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, and an MSc in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the London School of Economics and Political Science.  “Professor Yousefi brings valuable expertise in organisation theory, strategy and entrepreneurship to HEC Paris, Doha,” said Joshua Kobb, Chief Growth and Impact Officer. “His research and teaching experience will enrich our academic community in Doha and contribute to regional teaching and research, while offering valuable perspectives on the organisational and strategic dynamics shaping businesses and institutions across the GCC.”
