Patrick Reed maintained his impressive early-season form to share the first-round lead with Daniel Hillier at the Qatar Masters after both carded seven under par 65s at the Doha Golf Club Thursday.The 2018 Masters champion arrived in Doha on the back of victory at the Dubai Desert Classic two weeks ago and a runner-up finish following a play-off defeat at last week’s Bahrain Championship. Hillier, meanwhile, continued his consistent run, sitting fifth in the season standings after four top-six finishes in five events, including second place at the Dubai Invitational and a tie for fourth in Bahrain.Reed made a flying start with three consecutive birdies and did not record his first par until the sixth hole, the 15th on his card. Despite a lone bogey, he surged to an outward nine of 31, picking up further birdies at the 16th and 17th. He birdied the first, fourth and seventh before a bogey at the eighth left him tied with Hillier.The American said: "I hit the ball pretty well, especially early in the round, a lot of my birdies were just kind of kick-ins which is always nice, not having to think too much around there.”Reed added: The golf course, especially when it’s windy like this, it requires a lot of shot-making – you have to work the ball both ways, or flight things down, or take it up in the air. That’s the kind of golf I like. I like to get creative when I’m out there and a golf course like this with a lot of doglegs and cross-winds, it allows you to do that. It’s just one of these places that kind of suits my eye."Hillier also started from the tenth with a pair of birdies, with another at the 16th taking him out in 33. The New Zealander picked up another three in four holes from the third and after his only bogey of the day at the eighth, a closing eagle provided the perfect finish to his round.“Yeah, that was nice," he said. "I was a little frustrated with a soft bogey there on (my 17th hole) but nice to get a couple back at the end. My game’s feeling really good so I’m just trying to ride the wave, I guess.”There was a Scandinavian flavour to the chasing pack, with Sweden's Marcus Kinhult, Dane Jacob Skov Olesen and Finland's Oliver Lindell all at six under. They were joined late in the day by Spain's Angel Ayora and Italy's Gregorio De Leo, the latter ending his round with a bogey at the ninth hole to deny him a share of the lead.Another Swede, Joakim Lagergren, was five under alongside New Zealand's Kazuma Kobori. David Micheluzzi provided one of the highlights of the day with a hole-in-one at the third hole. The Australian was one under par for his round.It was a landmark day for Ireland's three-time Major Champion Padraig Harrington, who made his 500th start on the DP World Tour and was presented with a silver platter by tournament director Mikael Eriksson to mark the occasion. Harrington also shot a one-under-par 71, with birdies at the ninth and tenth offset by a bogey at the 15th.Qatar’s Sokolov, al-Kaabi keep cut hopes aliveQatar’s Daniel Sokolov and Saleh al-Kaabi produced steady performances, carding identical rounds of 74 - two over par - to keep their hopes of making the cut alive.Play was suspended for the night with four groups still on the course. Among them was Qatar’s Ali al-Shahrani, who endured a difficult round and was 12 over par through 16 holes. Adri Arnaus and Francesco Laporta, both at two under par, were the leading players among the 12 golfers yet to complete their rounds.Al-Kaabi said competing on home soil provides both strong motivation and added responsibility to perform at his best. He noted that he enters the tournament with high confidence following an intensive preparation period and encouraging results in recent regional and continental events.The Qatari golfer added that his familiarity with Doha Golf Club offers a valuable advantage, helping him maintain focus and deliver consistent performances throughout the tournament."I feel that I am enjoying one of my best seasons technically and mentally. My preparation has been strong and I know the competition will be tough with the presence of elite international players and former champions, but I am ready for the challenge and aim to take each round step by step," al-Kaabi said.He stressed that his main target is to make the cut and achieve a result that reflects the development of Qatari golf, adding that fan support will play a key role in boosting players’ morale. Representing Qatar in a tournament of this scale, he said, is a great honour for the country’s golfers.Meanwhile, Sokolov expressed his delight at participating in the Qatar Masters, highlighting the value of competing alongside world-class players and gaining experience from top international stars. He added that he aims to improve on his opening performance and produce stronger results in the remaining rounds.

The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Alliance Fleuve Congo / March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) have signed in Doha the terms of reference arising from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. The signing came at the close of a meeting of the Ceasefire Oversight and Verification Mechanism between the two sides, hosted by Qatar as part of its efforts to help end the conflict in eastern Congo.Both parties also renewed their commitment to the ceasefire and to the Doha Framework Agreement for Peace, signed on November 15, 2025, and pledged to implement all their obligations in good faith to support the peace process.Members of the mechanism attended the meeting, with the United States and the African Union present as observers, alongside the Republic of Togo in its role as AU-appointed mediator, the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.Talks focused on developments in the field and the challenges facing implementation. Participants stressed the need for practical steps to strengthen monitoring, verification and information-sharing in support of peace efforts.They also reviewed plans by MONUSCO and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region to put the mechanism into operation, and reaffirmed their backing for its work to ensure the success of field missions. MONUSCO was tasked with sending the first field mission to the city of Uvira in the coming days to monitor the ceasefire, with the necessary communication channels already established to facilitate its work under the mechanism.

Organisers of the Doha Diamond League Meeting on May 8 have confirmed that athletes who set new meeting records at the 2026 event will be awarded a $5000 bonus, an innovative concept that was first introduced in 2025.The Diamond League series broke new ground in 2025 with $9.84mn awarded in prize money across the series as a whole, the largest prize pool in Diamond League history.While the introduction of meeting record bonus payments in Doha provided another welcome incentive for athletes, the high standard of past-performances meant that only Bahrain’s Olympic silver medallist Salwa Eid Naser came close. Her winning time of 49.83 in the women’s 400m matched the meeting record set by Allyson Felix of USA in 2008, but it wasn’t quick enough for the outright best required to meet the criteria for the $5000 bonus payment.Mohammed al-Fadala, Qatar Athletics Federation president, said: “The Doha Meeting has established itself as one of the leading Wanda Diamond League fixtures and feedback from our athletes, their coaches and their managers, repeatedly tells us that our exceptional hospitality is a key factor in them wanting to return.“As Mutaz Barshim said in last year’s press conference, track and field isn’t an easy job, so it’s very important that we value our athletes and take care of them, as well as providing the perfect stage for top quality competition. By continuing to award bonus payments for new meeting records we are incentivising athletes to perform, but we are also rewarding them for their efforts.“Mutaz acknowledged that change is positive and that as a meeting, and across the sport as a whole, we were moving in the right direction. We in Doha remain committed to innovation and change and that remains crucial if we’re to continue to grow our reputation and profile globally.”Earlier, multiple Olympic, world and European champion Mondo Duplantis of Sweden confirmed he will compete in Doha. The 26-year-old, a two-time Olympic gold medallist and six-time world champion, is also the meeting record holder in Doha with 6.02m, set in 2022. He arrives following another standout season, having broken the world record for the 14th time, most recently with 6.30m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.Duplantis is unbeaten in this Doha Diamond League fixture, but it’s been far from plain sailing. The 2020 event was postponed due to the pandemic (he won the rescheduled competition with a best of 5.82m), while in 2022 the men’s pole vault was delayed by one day and moved indoors due to high winds. Duplantis cleared 6.02m for the win on that occasion – a mark that still stands as the meeting record.“We’ve had a couple of challenges in the past for sure, but I’ve always loved coming to Doha,” said the 2025 World Athlete of the Year. “Last year was amazing for me. I ticked off a couple of really big goals, stuff that was high up on my bucket list, but my hunger and motivation is still 100% there. My training has gone well over the winter and I’m looking forward to competing indoors – it’s important to have something new to aim for, and for me, I want to successfully defend my European title. Doha will follow and it’s the perfect meet to kick off my outdoor season. I definitely prefer the warm weather to the cold, so hopefully conditions will be conducive to jumping high, challenging my meeting record, and setting a solid benchmark – and new goals – for the year ahead.”The azzraty Doha Meeting is the opening meeting of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League. The series comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field across four different continents. It concludes with a single final across two days in Brussels on September 4 and 5. 

The Rt Hon Lord Jonathan Marland, chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), underscored the importance of strengthening trade, investment, and enterprise collaboration across Commonwealth markets during his visit to the LuLu Group Doha headquarters Monday.The engagement reflects CWEIC’s growing partnership with the private sector in the Gulf region and its role in fostering resilience and long-term growth in an evolving global economy.Welcoming Lord Marland and Professor Asif Chaudry, Dr Mohamed Althaf, Advisory Council member of CWEIC, highlighted the value of the council’s role in today’s global environment. He noted that LuLu Group, a proud member of CWEIC, has benefitted significantly from its association with the council through access to senior business leaders and government stakeholders across multiple markets.“The Commonwealth provides a rare and valuable platform in today’s increasingly fragmented geo-economic environment. It offers stability, predictability, and trust, supported by a healthy mix of countries — large and small, developed and emerging. This balance makes CWEIC a highly effective forum for long-term collaboration,” said Dr Althaf.Speaking at a press conference held at the LuLu Group office, Lord Marland said: “We have a new world order as a result of steps that have been taken by the US, which is bringing trading groups closer together.”Lord Marland also said, “Our Commonwealth organisation represents 56 countries, a third of the world’s population. Sixty percent of that population are under 30, while 70% of the African population are under 30.“The Commonwealth is being inundated with requests for opportunities, requests to build new relationships. We have 14 offices around the world now, so that companies wanting to enter into a new Commonwealth country have reliable, supportive mechanisms with which to do so.”During the visit, discussions focused on trade resilience, food security, supply chains, and the role of private enterprise in supporting sustainable growth across Commonwealth economies. Particular emphasis was placed on the relevance of strong public-private partnerships in regions such as Qatar and the wider GCC.Dr Althaf also encouraged Qatari companies to consider engaging with CWEIC, highlighting the council’s role in facilitating meaningful cross-border partnerships and investment opportunities.Lord Marland’s visit to LuLu Group underscores the importance of practical collaboration between global enterprises and institutional platforms, such as CWEIC in addressing shared economic challenges and unlocking future growth.“This is a very valuable visit. There is no reason why Qatar as a nation can't be members of our organisation. Even though they're not a Commonwealth country, they can be members of our business organisation. And we want to encourage a deeper relationship with that.” 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani visited the Web Summit Qatar 2026 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) Sunday.  Having toured the booths of the participating national and international companies, His Highness the Amir was apprised of the latest innovations and cutting-edge technological systems in the areas of technology and artificial intelligence as well as entrepreneurship and digital transformation.  His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani listened to an explanation about the position of this summit as a global forum to share expertise through holding panel discussions and specialised workshops, representing solution platforms and modern technologies, in addition to public and private sector initiatives supporting the technology sector, with the participation of a contingent of keynote speakers and decision makers in this sector.

Doha Debates, an initiative of Qatar Foundation, examined the ethical, political and social ramifications of the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) during its latest “town hall”, held amid growing concerns that AI’s accelerating power could surpass human capability and escape meaningful control. Hosted at Multaqa, the Education City Student Center, the open forum brought together students, researchers and global experts to explore whether current institutions, ethical frameworks and governance systems are prepared for an era of fast-moving technological transformation. Moderated by Nadir Nahdi, the session featured strategic philosopher and transhumanist thinker Max More; Dr Roman Yampolskiy, professor of computer science and a leading expert on AI safety and security; and Nabiha Syed, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation and a prominent advocate for accountable technology governance. Approaching the issue from sharply different perspectives, the speakers debated whether advanced artificial intelligence represents an unprecedented opportunity for human flourishing or a profound threat to the core of human agency. Reflecting a proactionary outlook, Max More urged humanity to resist paralysis driven by fear, stressing the importance of innovation grounded in reason and reinforced by proportional safeguards. He warned that risk and opportunity are emerging simultaneously as AI capabilities expand. By contrast, Dr Roman Yampolskiy expressed deep scepticism about the possibility of maintaining real control over systems that exceed human intelligence, cautioning that governance structures may collapse as the intelligence gap widens and power becomes increasingly asymmetric. From a societal perspective, Nabiha Syed focused on how decisions around artificial intelligence are made, questioning who benefits and who bears the consequences when these technologies are deployed unevenly across societies. She called for stronger accountability, transparency and public participation, particularly at a time when fears are rising without a clear vision for maximising benefits while minimising harm. Students from universities across Qatar played an active role in shaping the discussion, raising questions related to work, human dignity, surveillance, the meaning of existence and the future of human control in a world where artificial intelligence may become inexpensive and widely accessible. Doha Debates announced that the town hall episode will be broadcast online on February 17. The organisation also revealed that a new episode of The Negotiators podcast, recorded during the Doha Forum and focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, will be released on February 2, followed by a new Doha Debates podcast episode on superheroes on February 10.

The Permanent Web Summit Organising Committee announced that Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, will participate in the 3rd edition of Web Summit Qatar 2026, taking place from February 1-4 February at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. In a statement Thursday, the Committee said:" The participation of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser will advance the Summit's discussions, particularly around the role of technology in serving society, strengthening education systems through innovation, and empowering communities amid rapid digital transformation". The Committee also confirmed the participation of His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani in Web Summit Qatar 2026, the region's largest and fastest-growing technology event. The Committee mentioned: "Web Summit Qatar 2026 will also feature Qatari industry leaders, including Her Excellency Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani; His Excellency Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa al-Hassan al-Mohannadi; and His Excellency President of the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau and Secretary General of the National Planning Council Dr Abdulaziz bin Nasser bin Mubarak al-Khalifa". The statement added: "Qatari senior executives will also participate in the Summit's programme, including His Excellency Managing Director of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Hassan bin Abdullah al-Thawadi; CEO of Invest Qatar Sheikh Ali bin Alwaleed al-Thani; Chairman of Qai Abdulla bin Hamad al-Misnad; Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal bin Khalifa al-Thani; and Secretary General of the Qatar Research and Development (QRDI) Council Eng Omar Ali al-Ansari". Web Summit Qatar 2026 is expected to host 30,000 participants, more than 1,600 startups, over 800 investors, over 180 global partners, and more than 400 speakers from around the world. The Summit will also receive extensive international media coverage, with over 600 media professionals attending, making it the largest edition of the global event to be hosted in Qatar.
