Israeli authorities have begun detaining hundreds of activists seized from a Gaza-bound flotilla at the southern port of Ashdod on Wednesday, a rights group said, after Israeli forces intercepted their vessels at sea. The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkey last week in the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory, after Israeli forces intercepted a previous convoy last month.Israeli authorities said 430 activists aboard the flotilla were en route to Israel, while rights group Adalah said some had already arrived at Ashdod port and were being held there."Having set sail toward Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid and challenge the unlawful blockade, these civilian participants were forcefully abducted from international waters and taken into Israeli territory entirely against their will," Adalah said."These acts are a direct extension of Israel's policies of collective punishment and starvation of Palestinians in Gaza."Around 50 ships had departed from southwestern Turkey on Thursday. Nine Indonesian citizens who were part of the flotilla "have all been reported arrested by Israel," a spokeswoman for Indonesia's foreign ministry said, citing information dated Wednesday.Indonesia called on Israel to immediately release all vessels and crew members, adding that "every diplomatic channel and consular measure will continue to be fully utilised".Indonesian newspaper Republika earlier said two of its journalists were among the nine Indonesians detained. Turkey and Spain have condemned the interception.Organisers said the flotilla also included 15 Irish citizens, including Margaret Connolly, sister of President Catherine Connolly. 

Indonesian authorities have detained more than 300 foreign nationals this week for allegedly running an online gambling ring in the capital Jakarta, police said Saturday.Gambling is illegal in the archipelago, with punishments extended to bookmakers, punters and those who promote gambling content online.Police raided a building in Jakarta on Thursday, where they found and detained 321 foreigners and seized phones, passports, laptops and computers.The majority of those detained, 228 people, were Vietnamese nationals. The group also included 57 from China, 11 from Laos, five from Thailand and three each from Cambodia and Malaysia, police official Wira Satya Triputra told a news conference.Some 275 people face charges of gambling and money laundering, Wira said, adding that authorities were still investigating the rest."We caught the perpetrators red-handed, meaning they were conducting an online gambling operation," he said.Preliminary investigations suggested that the ring, which started operations about two months ago, targeted victims outside Indonesia, Wira said, without specifying where.Police have previously said that many scammers had moved operations to Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries following a crackdown in China.Elsewhere in Indonesia this week, immigration authorities raided an apartment building in Batam, in Riau Islands province, arresting 210 foreigners suspected of running an investment scam.In February, Police raided two villas on the resort island of Bali and arrested 39 Indian nationals for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation.Turnover linked to online gambling reached more than 280tn rupiah (about $16bn) last year, official data showed, with more than 12mn Indonesians estimated to be engaged in the illicit activity. 

Eleven students were injured after Israeli occupation forces entered the campus of Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials said.The Palestinian Red Crescent said five students were wounded by live fire, four suffered tear gas inhalation and two were injured in falls. All were taken to hospital.University officials said troops broke through the main gate and fired live rounds, tear gas and stun grenades while thousands of students were on campus. They added that buildings were entered, and student equipment seized, and that the university's vice-president for academic affairs was briefly detained.The Palestinian Ministry of Education condemned the raid, calling it a violation of international conventions protecting educational institutions. The incident comes amid heightened Israeli military activity across the West Bank.

The Israeli occupation forces renewed their incursion into Syrian territory on Sunday, detaining six people.The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that the Israeli forces detained these young men from the Daraa governorate as they were searching for wild mushrooms in farmlands near the town of Qudna, in the southern Quneitra countryside.SANA added that the occupation forces transferred the detainees to the Tal Al Ahmar Al Gharbi military base, with no information available regarding their fate or the reason behind their detention.The Israeli forces, driving four military vehicles, also carried out an incursion into Saida Al Hanout village in southern Quneitra countryside, where it detained a local young man.

Security forces in Uganda have detained more than 300 supporters and officials from the party of opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine since campaigning for a January election kicked off last month, his party's spokesperson said Tuesday.Pop star-turned-politician Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is challenging 81-year-old President Yoweri Museveni for the second time after coming second in the last election in 2021.Now Africa's fourth longest-ruling leader, Museveni's government has changed the constitution twice to remove age and term limits, allowing him to remain in office since 1986.The arrests included scores detained this week in the capital Kampala, where Wine began campaigning on Monday, Joel Ssenyonyi, spokesperson for Wine's party National Unity Platform (NUP), told Reuters."Over 300 have been detained since the campaigns started. The regime is in panic, they are resorting to arrests to deter and instil fear in our people," Ssenyonyi said.The majority of those detained are ordinary supporters but also include campaign co-ordinators, Wine's aides and other officials, he said.Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.At a rally in Kampala's Kawempe area on Monday security forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse a crowd of Wine's supporters, video aired by local broadcaster NTV showed.A video posted on Wine's X account late on Monday also showed police using pepper spray on his supporters. A man in plain clothes who approached from the side of the security personnel was seen beating supporters using a cane.At least 100 people were arrested on Monday and dozens more detained Tuesday at another rally on the outskirts of Kampala, Ssenyonyi said.Police said in a statement late on Monday that they had detained seven people after clashes with Wine's supporters, accusing them of throwing stones and injuring seven officers."Security personnel responded by using public order measures to control rowdy crowds," the statement said.Wine says Museveni won the last election through ballot-stuffing, intimidation of voters, bribery and other rigging tactics. Ruling party officials have dismissed the accusation.If he wins a new five-year term, Museveni will extend his rule in the East African country to nearly half a century.
