Syria's top diplomat on Saturday said Damascus was considering whether to join the NATO-style Mecca defence alliance that binds Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.Saudi Arabia, under heavy fire from Yemen's Houthis, is a key backer of Syria's government that came to power after the fall of former strongman Bashar al-Assad in December 2024."Discussions are currently underway to evaluate Syria's entry into the Mecca alliance," Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said at the Manama Dialogue conference in Bahrain.Saudi Arabia has been rallying support against escalating Houthi attacks, including a major strike that closed Riyadh's international airport for two weeks this month.In August, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey signed the defence pact in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, that states an attack on one country is to be considered an attack on all three.Pakistan and Turkey have not announced any attacks on the Iran-backed Houthis.Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron made a surprise visit to Riyadh and said France had sent troops to help shield a key Saudi oil terminal from Houthi attacks.Also in October, the UK government announced it would deploy British fighter planes to help Saudi Arabia against the attacks.

Turkey 'in talks' with Pakistan and Saudi over defence pact

NATO member Turkey is holding talks with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to join a defence alliance established in September between the two countries, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday."At present, there are discussions and talks underway, but no agreement has yet been signed," Fidan told reporters.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's "vision is broader, more comprehensive, and aimed at establishing a larger platform," he added.The defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, announced amid tensions in the Gulf region, raises many questions, particularly about its possible nuclear component, given Islamabad possesses nuclear weapons.The Pakistan-Saudi pact was signed just months after Pakistan and India fought an intense four-day conflict in May that killed more than 70 people on both sides in missile, drone and artillery fire, the worst clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999.Pakistan and India, also a nuclear power, have long accused each other of backing militant forces to destabilise one another.Saudi Arabia is believed to have played a key role in defusing the conflict.
