In early days in Qatar, Ramadan gatherings were more than just spaces for hospitality or places to exchange pleasantries. For decades, they were a firmly established social institution, reviving the spirit of community each Ramadan and reinforcing the values of dialogue, solidarity, and communication among the residents of the same neighbourhood.After Taraweeh prayers, men would head to the (Majlis) gatherings, where Arabic coffee and dates were served, and attendees would sit in facing circles. There, news of the sea and land was shared, trade and work were discussed, and some disputes were resolved in a friendly spirit characterized by the serenity of the holy month. Daily issues were raised, and diverse opinions were heard in an atmosphere of respect, especially for the elders.The Majlis also served as an unwritten school for the rising generations; the young men sitting on the periphery of these gatherings learned the etiquette of conversation, the art of listening, and respect for elders. They also gained insight into life experiences through the stories and recounting of past events shared by the adults. Thus, these gatherings became indirect educational spaces, contributing to the formation of social awareness and character development.During Ramadan specifically, these gatherings were more frequent and organised, as the month's rhythm allowed for longer periods of time to meet, and late-night gatherings became an integral part of daily life.With urban development and the expansion of cities, these gatherings did not disappear. Instead, they moved to modern homes and larger Majlis halls, and are a cherished tradition to be held in cultural and heritage spaces such as the old Souq Waqif, Souq Al Wakrah and Katara Cultural Village, sometimes tackling cultural or intellectual debates, addressing issues of society, identity, and heritage.These Ramadan gatherings contributed to strengthening the bond between Qataris and their environment, reinforcing the concept of community consultation, and solidifying the value of gathering based on kind words. Though its forms may have changed, it still carries at its core that profound meaning: that Ramadan is not only a season of worship, but also a season of gathering and dialogue, a time when bonds are renewed and collective memory is preserved.

The Community Education Programme at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), in collaboration with Qatar Academy Doha, has concluded a six-week initiative that invited young students to explore sustainability through hands-on creative practice, combining environmental awareness with digital storytelling.Waste to Art ran from January 4 to February 17, engaging 26 QAD students across years four to five. Participants repurposed everyday waste into sculptural figures and then “activated” their creations through stop-motion film, bridging traditional craftsmanship and digital media.“The Community Education Programme at VCUarts Qatar is committed to building a strong and equitable creative community,” said Rasha Alkasab, programme manager at VCUarts Qatar. “By integrating themes such as sustainability into art and design, we equip students with a strong creative foundation while contributing to a multiversity environment that nurtures collaboration and innovation across the Qatar Foundation ecosystem.”Mada Sadek, art teacher at Qatar Academy Doha, highlighted the pedagogical impact: “For the past three years, our students have engaged regularly with VCUarts Qatar. By starting this journey in Grade 3 and continuing through Grade 5, they have developed skills that broaden their horizons. This experience supports the development of the 'whole child,' as these innovative thinking skills transfer into subjects like mathematics and language.”Projects were evaluated based on design quality, conceptual development, sustainability, technical execution, and reflection.First place was awarded to Alesha Gunay for The Sunset Race, a work inspired by a passion for Formula 1 that used old pastels, sandpaper, cardboard, wire, and yarn to capture the energy of the track. Second place went to Yosra Aqel for The Evolution of Amber, an animation created using pinecones, pompoms, and feathers that follows a character named Amber as she overcomes challenges to learn to fly, symbolising resilience and integrity. And third place was awarded to Lynn Alameddine for Monty, constructed from forks, straws, and recycled cardboard. The story follows Monty, a character navigating a disability, serving as an inspiring reminder that anyone can shine regardless of physical challenges.The VCUarts Qatar Community Education Programme offers creative learning opportunities for youth and lifelong learners through workshops and short courses in art and design. Rooted in experimentation, critical thinking, and cultural exchange, the programme fosters artistic growth and community engagement across Qatar. 

His Excellency the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie affirmed that Qatar Environment Day, observed annually on Feb 26, represents an opportunity to evaluate the progress of environmental work, review its priorities, and highlight the importance of community awareness in protecting the environment as a fundamental pillar of comprehensive development and Qatar National Vision 2030.In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), HE the Minister said that this year’s slogan, "Our behaviour reflects on our environment," stressed the notion that environmental protection was no longer solely an institutional responsibility, but rather a daily approach that begins with the individual and extends its impact to society.He noted that the daily practices of individuals and institutions directly affect environmental quality, underscoring the importance of community participation in supporting national environmental efforts.He added that the State of Qatar, with the support of its wise leadership, has established a balanced approach to environmental and climate work that reconciles economic development with the protection of natural resources.This approach is based on strategic planning, effective governance, scientific data, and integrated coordination among national entities to ensure resource sustainability and enhance quality of life.He said that the year 2025 marked a pivotal phase, witnessing the implementation of national policies, strategies, and projects that contributed to developing the environmental work system and enhancing the country’s readiness to address environmental and climate challenges, within the framework of the National Environment and Climate Change Strategy 2024-2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.Among the most notable achievements were the launch of the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2025-2030, and the introduction of a biodiversity database documenting more than 2,567 species and making it accessible to researchers and the public through an interactive platform.On the legislative and regulatory front, he revealed that the legal framework governing environmental work had been updated, including a draft law on environmental protection and sustainability, as well as regulatory decisions related to the safe transport of radioactive materials and grazing regulation. Specialized technical and guidance manuals on environmental assessment and radiological and nuclear emergencies were also prepared to strengthen environmental compliance and improve risk management efficiency.Digital transformationDr al-Subaie also highlighted the development of the environmental assessment system through updated licensing methodologies and the launch of an intelligent environmental impact assessment system. He noted the progress in digital transformation, with electronic services expanding to include 89 services and 30 services available through the Bee’ah (environment) application, alongside the launch of an AI-powered virtual assistant to enhance user experience and government performance efficiency.In the field of monitoring and surveillance, HE the Minister that the ministry continued developing the national air quality monitoring network, implementing marine and water monitoring programs, supporting biodiversity and wildlife protection, managing protected areas, and carrying out breeding programs for endangered species and rehabilitating degraded environments.He emphasized the importance of environmental innovation through the national environmental creativity and innovation platform Bithrah (seed), which supports research projects and community initiatives, in addition to strengthening international cooperation, actively participating in environmental and climate forums, and signing memoranda of understanding in environmental protection and biodiversity.He said that media campaigns and awareness programs during 2025 helped reinforce responsible environmental behaviour, and that the slogan "Our behaviour reflects on our environment" embodied the essence of national environmental work, as environmental protection begins with daily conduct. He stressed that the commitment of individuals and institutions forms the foundation for ensuring the sustainability of natural resources and quality of life.In environmental monitoring and surveillance, he noted the continued development of the national air quality monitoring network and the availability of its data to the public through an updated electronic platform, alongside regular monitoring programs and the issuance of technical reports and specialized environmental studies that support preventive policies and strengthen environmental knowledge.He added that marine environmental protection was a priority in 2025, through the implementation of monitoring programs for coastal and marine waters and estuaries in co-operation with national research institutions, to ensure the health and sustainability of marine ecosystems. Regarding biodiversity and wildlife, he explained that the ministry implemented programs to protect species and natural habitats, manage protected areas, carry out breeding programs for endangered species, and activate the national program for effective management of protected areas, in line with the Global Biodiversity Framework.He also noted the implementation of programs to rehabilitate degraded rawdas (natural depressions), cultivate native wild plants, fence numerous rawdas, and expand desertification control efforts through the launch of the second phase of a project for wild plant propagation, with a production capacity of approximately 25,000 seedlings and 300,000 seeds annually.Ministry's effortsIn the field of studies and research, he highlighted the ministry’s efforts to institutionalize environmental innovation through the launch of the national environmental creativity and innovation platform, the first specialized digital platform for environmental innovation in Qatar. He noted that the platform attracted community participation and supported research projects in co-operation with relevant national entities.Regarding international co-operation, he said that Qatar continued its active participation in regional and international environmental and climate forums and contributed to shaping global environmental policies. He added that the country expanded its network of international partnerships and signed memoranda of understanding in environmental protection and biodiversity, and exchanged expertise in these fields to strengthen its position on the global environmental stage.On the awareness front, HE the Minister emphasized the importance of raising environmental awareness, noting that during 2025 the ministry implemented several media campaigns, awareness programs, and community activities targeting various segments of society, which contributed to reinforcing responsible environmental behavior.In conclusion, HE al-Subaie said that Qatar Environment Day represents a national milestone for strengthening partnerships between government entities, the private sector, and society, within an integrated approach that balances development and environmental protection.

The head of Muslim Scholars and Grand Mufti of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr Husein Kavazovic, Tuesday honoured Dr Vahid Suljic with a prestigious award, recognising his outstanding efforts in strengthening co-operation between the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar.“This distinguished award affirms his many years of dedicated, committed, and responsible work in enhancing institutional, cultural, and friendly ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar,” Dr Kavazovic said. “Through his continuous engagement, Dr Suljic has made a significant contribution to advancing co-operation between the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina and institutions and partners in Qatar.”Dr Suljic thanked Dr Kavazovic for the award, emphasising that it reflects the continuity of his efforts to connect institutions and individuals and to build bridges of co-operation and mutual trust between the two friendly states.Dr Suljic is an alumnus of Qatar Foundation (QF), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), and Qatar University (QU).Originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, he came to Qatar to pursue his higher education after being awarded a scholarship by His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.He remains profoundly grateful for this opportunity and expresses lifelong appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Hamad, Qatar’s leadership, and its people for their continued support, generosity, and commitment to education and international co-operation.Throughout his academic and professional journey, Dr Suljic has actively contributed to strengthening educational, institutional, and cultural ties, as well as bilateral relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar, promoting dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding.He is the founder of Qatar’s largest student platform, @students_qatar, which today boasts of more than 144,000 subscribers.The platform serves as a leading hub for student engagement, information-sharing, and community building across the country, reflecting Dr Suljic’s commitment to empowering youth and supporting academic excellence in Qatar.Dr Suljic has previously received recognition for his contribution to the development of bilateral relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar, including honours from the former ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Qatar, Dr Bisera Turkovic, as well as from ambassador Haris Lukovac. 

Qatar Charity, in co-operation with the Centre for Indian Community (CIC) – Qatar, organised a large Iftar gathering for members of the Indian community at Shantiniketan Indian School in Barwa Village.The event was attended by around 3,000 men, women, and children from the Indian community, as well as several staff from Qatar Charity. It was held in a Ramadan atmosphere that reflected the values of fraternity and coexistence.The Iftar gathering was organised with the support of philanthropists in Qatar, as Qatar Charity continues to implement its Ramadan initiatives aimed at promoting the values of giving and social solidarity, as part of its Ramadan campaign “Good Starts With You.”The event featured Islamic lectures on the virtues of fasting and the importance of Ramadan as the month of the Qur’an. The speakers encouraged attendees to make the most of the holy month through worship, supplication, reflection on the Qur’an, and charitable giving.Ali Ibrahem AlGreeb, director of Donor Relations at Qatar Charity, said the event reflects the organisation’s commitment to strengthening community partnerships and channelling the generosity of donors in Qatar to support various communities in Qatar.R S Abdul Jaleel, president of the Centre for Indian Community – Qatar, said Qatar Charity plays a leading humanitarian role in supporting the Indian community. He noted that the organisation provided nearly QR2mn in 2025, in addition to food, in kind, and financial assistance to low-income families.Abdul Raheem, in charge of the Indian Community Fund, said the Iftar event aimed to introduce the fund and explain how it operates under Qatar Charity, while supporting the community members facing difficult living conditions. He praised Qatar Charity’s humanitarian efforts in serving the community.Abdul Latif K C, managing director of Shanti Niketan Indian School and Advisory Council member of the Centre for Indian Community, said that the Indian Community Fund under Qatar Charity provides a structured and legally regulated framework to meet the needs of the Indian community, particularly in education, healthcare, and social support.Qatar Charity continues to organise several Iftars for resident communities across Qatar, aiming to reinforce social bonds and provide a suitable spiritual atmosphere during the holy month of Ramadan through accompanying awareness programmes. 

Two Physical Education faculty members of MES Indian School were recently felicitated at the 7th Edition of the Expats Sportive Community Sports Meet 2026 in recognition of their exemplary contributions to the field of sports. Steeson K Mathew and Mohamed Navas were accorded special honours during the grand inaugural ceremony, which celebrated individuals who have made significant strides in the sporting community and recognised their outstanding achievements and dedicated commitment to promoting sporting excellence.Mathew, an International Asian Masters Athletics bronze medalist in javelin throw at the championship held in the Philippines, was honoured by First Lt Abdul Aziz al-Mohannadi in appreciation of his remarkable contributions and excellence in athletics.Navas, an Indian handball team player and bronze medalist at the World Masters Games 2025 held in Taiwan, received his honour from Satheesh, CFO of Al Ajjaj Limited Company. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of Qatar-based international athletes and acknowledged their significant contributions to the promotion and development of sports. The recognition of the MES Indian School staff members highlighted their dedication and commitment to sporting excellence, bringing pride to the institution. 

Qatar Indian Masters emerged as overall champions at the Community Sports Meet, organised by Expats Sportive in celebration of Qatar National Sport Day. Excelling in both track and field events, they secured 147 points to claim the title. KL 10 Legends finished second with 117 points, followed by Calicut Sports Club with 108 points. Syro Malabar Cultural Association and Kia Qatar placed fourth and fifth, respectively.Held at the Aspire Zone Warm-Up Track and Field with the approval of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, the meet featured around 750 athletes competing in 37 events across athletics and games. Competitions included 100m, 200m, 800m, and 1,500m races, 4×100 relay, long jump, high jump, shot put, arm wrestling, tug of war, shootout, and cricket bowling.The event also showcased a vibrant march past, with cultural performances including Oppana, Kolkali, Chenda Melam, martial arts displays, and tableaux celebrating the diversity of India and Qatar. Harish Pandey, First Secretary at the Embassy of India, received the salute, and Qatari-based athletes who have represented India internationally were honoured.Distinguished guests included Abdul Aziz al-Mohannadi (Community Police), Mohammed Nasser al-Kaldi (Kahramaa), ISC president EP Abdul Rahman, ICC general-secretary Abraham Joseph, ICBF general-secretary Deepak Shetty, and several community leaders and organisation representatives.Individual champions included Abdunnasar Kuniyil (Calicut Sports Club, Masters men 50+), Mahroof (KL 10 Legends, men 20–35), Kannan Santos (Qatar Indian Masters, men 35+), Lincy Sukumaran (Qatar Indian Masters, women 20–30), and Surya Suresh (Qatar Indian Masters, women 30+). Syro Malabar Cultural Association received the Best Team award, and Muhsin Omassery (Calicut Sports Club) was named Best Team Manager.Prizes were distributed by a host of dignitaries, including leaders from Indian Sports Centre, Expats Sportive, Pravasi Welfare, ICC, and various community organisations, supported by the organising committee. 

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas called Wednesday for a "firm response" from the US and the international community to Israel's plan to tighten its control of the occupied West Bank.During a visit to Oslo, Abbas said he had discussed the issue with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, as well as those of Israeli settler violence and Israel's freezing of "$4bn" intended for the Palestinian people."These serious violations require a firm response from the US administration and the international community because they hinder (US) President (Donald) Trump's efforts and constitute a violation of international law," Abbas told reporters.On Sunday, Israel's security cabinet approved a series of measures that would allow Israel to expand its control in areas administered by the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo accords in place since the 1990s.The plans, which have sparked international outrage, would also allow Israelis to buy West Bank land directly and allow Israeli authorities to administer certain religious sites even when they are located in areas under Palestinian Authority control.Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.Excluding Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, more than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements and outposts across the West Bank, which are illegal under international law.Around 3mn Palestinians live in the territory. 

Qatar's Ministry of Sports and Youth has honoured the winners of the first edition of the State Sports Day Award, recognising government bodies, private institutions and individuals for their contributions to promoting physical activity and community sport.The award ceremony was held ahead of the State Sports Day 2026 celebrations and was attended by His Excellency Minister of Sports and Youth Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani. Also attending were His Excellency Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal al-Thani, and His Excellency Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Yasser bin Abdullah al-Jamal, along with senior officials.The event recognised national institutions for their sustained initiatives to promote public health and encourage physical activity within workplaces and communities, supporting Qatar's long-term vision of building a healthy and active society.The Ministry of Interior won first place in the institutional category, followed by the University of Doha for Science and Technology in second place, and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in third.Individual awards were also presented across several categories. Yousuf al-Muftah won the over-60 category after participating in 16 running events in 2025. Hassan al-Marikhi won the men's category with participation in 27 community sports events, while Kholoud Aqeel received the women's award after taking part in 31 activities during the year.In the children's category, Ghanem al-Nabet was honored for recording the highest number of participations, with 26 sports activities.Awards were also presented for the highest number of steps recorded through the Qatar Sports for All Federation app. Hamad al-Marri won the men's category after maintaining an average of more than 10,000 steps per day throughout 2025, while Nour Mohammed won the women's category for achieving the same daily average.Speaking at the event, Abdulrahman bin Mussallam al-Dosari, Chairman of the State Sports Day Committee and President of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, said the awards reflected growing institutional and community commitment to making sport a daily habit rather than a once-a-year activity.He added that State Sports Day has evolved into a national platform for promoting healthy lifestyles, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. 

Philippine School Doha (PSD), through its Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), will officially launch PSD Got Talent Season 2 Saturday, highlighting student creativity and strengthening community engagement within the Filipino community in Qatar.The launch event will take place from 9am at the Edgar V Bondoc Gym on the PSD campus. It will feature performances by student representatives from all five school departments, showcasing a wide range of artistic talents and underscoring the school’s commitment to nurturing creativity and self-expression among learners.The event also marks the opening of public voting, a key component of the competition designed to encourage wider community participation and support for young performers.Organisers said the initiative goes beyond competition, aiming to build students’ confidence, discipline, and stage presence while fostering unity within the school and the broader Filipino community.PSD Got Talent has become a platform for students to express their skills in music, dance, and other performing arts, while also serving as a collaborative effort between the school, parents, and community partners.
