The Pakistan Hockey Federation said Wednesday that the national team will not tour India for an Asian tournament, citing security concerns and calling for the event to be moved to a "safer" country.Pakistan and five other nations were due to compete in the Asian Champions Trophy from October 27 to November 5 in Mohali and Jalandhar, India.The Indian and Pakistani teams have boycotted each other since New Delhi stalled all bilateral sporting ties in the wake of 2008 attacks on Mumbai, which it blamed on militants based across the border.Nuclear-armed arch-rivals India and Pakistan share a deep distrust, and last year fought a deadly four-day conflict triggered by an attack on tourists, mostly Hindus, in Kashmir.Mohyuddin Wani, president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, said the decision not to tour India had been conveyed to the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF)."Considering the sensitive situation between the two countries, it is not advisable to send our players to India so we have demanded from the AHF to relocate the event to a safer country," Wani said in a statement.Pakistan also withdrew from last year's Asia Cup hockey event in India, citing security fears and tension at the border.Pakistan's hockey team last toured India for the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy, finishing fifth amongst six teams. 

Al Rayyan survived a spirited second-half fightback from Al Faisaly to secure a thrilling 4-3 win in their Asian Champions League Two Group C opener at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.The Qatari side looked in control after taking a 3-1 lead at the interval before Mohammad Haddad and Ahmad Ersan struck late to set up a tense finish.The match got off to a cagey start, with neither side able to establish an early rhythm before Al Faisaly’s Ahmad Ersan saw his effort from inside the box sail over the bar from a corner in the fourth minute.Al Rayyan’s free-flowing play almost produced the opener in the sixth minute, with Roger Guedes seeing his effort from outside the box blocked after being teed up by Otavio.The Qatari side, however, did not have to wait long, striking from the resulting corner when David García towered above the Al Faisaly defenders to steer Otavio’s delivery into the bottom left corner.Al Rayyan doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute when Drissa Diakite’s clever flick released Roger Guedes through the middle, with the Brazilian racing into the box before reacting quickest to tuck away the rebound after his initial effort had struck the left post.Guedes continued to torment the Al Faisaly defence, testing Al Abdallah Al Fakhorii with a long-range effort in the 27th minute, but the Al Faisaly goalkeeper could not prevent Al Rayyan from scoring in the 41st minute.Otavio delivered a perfect cross for Ahmed Alaa, who powered a diving header into the bottom corner beyond a rooted Al Fakhori to leave the Jordanian side with a mountain to climb.Al Faisaly, however, reduced the deficit in first half stoppage time when Saidou Simpore converted from close range after being picked out by Ahmad Ersan.Al Rayyan continued to dictate proceedings after the restart and restored their three-goal cushion in the 73rd minute with Hazem Shehata finishing from the centre of the box following Ahmed Al Ganehi’s cutback.The Jordanian side, however, refused to throw in the towel, with Haddad reacting quickest to fire the rebound into the top corner from a tight angle after Ersan’s initial effort crashed against the left post.Al Faisaly then set up a nail-biting finish in the 84th minute, with Ersan curling a superb right-footed free-kick into the top corner to reduce the deficit by one but Al Rayyan held firm to secure all three points. 

The Allianz Arena in Munich and Camp Nou in Barcelona will host Champions League finals in 2028 and 2029 respectively, European football's governing body UEFA said on Tuesday.The Allianz Arena will stage its third Champions League final in 2028, following Chelsea's victory on penalties over home side Bayern Munich in 2012 and Paris St Germain's maiden title triumph in 2025.Barcelona will host the 2029 final, one year before Spain co-hosts the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco.While the 70,000-capacity Allianz Arena is match-ready, redevelopment work continues at Camp Nou as part of a revamp project launched in 2023."This is fantastic news for us: The Allianz Arena, FC Bayern, and Munich stand for international appeal, genuine hospitality, and the highest organisational quality," Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in a statement on the club's website. 'EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR FANS'"We want to offer fans another exceptional experience and showcase Munich as a cosmopolitan, sports-loving, and exceptionally well-prepared host city."It will also be the third time that Europe's premier club final will be held at Camp Nou, which last played host in 1999 when Manchester United came from behind with two stoppage-time goals to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1."It’s an immense pride for FC Barcelona and for all Barcelona fans," Barcelona president Joan Laporta said in a statement."UEFA's confidence in hosting one of the biggest events in world football highlights the scale and ambition of this project and establishes Spotify Camp Nou as a new icon of Barcelona and an international reference."Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano, home of Atletico Madrid, is already scheduled to host the final of the 2026-27 campaign on June 5. CARDIFF TO HOST WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINALThe Women's Champions League finals will be held at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon-Decines in 2028 and Cardiff's Principality Stadium in 2029.The 73,000-plus capacity venue in the Welsh capital previously staged the men's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus in 2017."Our ambition is for the UEFA Women’s Champions League final to become a catalyst for the continued transformation of women’s and girls’ football in Wales," Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney said. 

Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno has urged his players to produce their best as they begin their AFC Champions League Two campaign against Jordanian side Al Faisaly at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday night. “We are eagerly looking forward to playing against Al Faisaly tomorrow in the AFC Champions League Two,” Moreno said at the pre-match press conference. “We know we are facing a good team and that it will be a very difficult match, but we are playing at home and are determined to secure a win in our opening game.” The match marks Al Rayyan’s first appearance in the AFC Champions League Two, with the Qatari club last featuring in the AFC Cup in 2010. Their opponents, two-time AFC Cup winners Al Faisaly, finished runners-up in the Jordanian Pro League last season. Al Rayyan have made a strong start to the Qatar Stars League and sit second after four matches, just two points behind leaders Al Sadd. Moreno believes that form can provide confidence, but stressed that his players must remain focused on the task ahead. “Past results give us great confidence heading into tomorrow’s match. It is very important for us, but our focus right now is solely on tomorrow’s game. Previous matches are over; right now, we know we must think only about tomorrow’s match,” he said. Moreno acknowledged the challenge of facing an opponent from a different league, saying Al Rayyan did not have a complete picture of Al Faisaly’s level. “It is a different competition. We are ready to play in the league, ready for the Qatar Cup, and ready to face Al Faisaly in the Champions League,” he said. “However, it is true that sometimes I do not know the opponent’s exact level because they play in a different league. We are entering tomorrow’s match without knowing their precise level, which is a challenge for us. But I repeat: we are ready, we respect the opponent greatly, and I have immense confidence in my players. I told them that if we want to win tomorrow, we must be at our very best.” Al Rayyan have conceded only two goals in their four league matches, and Moreno was pleased with the team's defensive solidity while calling for greater efficiency in attack. “We have a very good defence, and certainly a very good attack as well, because we are Al Rayyan, and Al Rayyan possesses very talented players,” he said. “However, we always want to improve our performance. Ideally, we would not concede any goals, though that is very difficult to achieve. We want to improve and score more goals. In recent league matches, we created plenty of scoring opportunities, and we need to capitalise on those situations.” Moreno also provided an update on striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who remains sidelined as he continues his recovery. “Mitrovic is currently sidelined. While he did begin training with us last week, he is only performing specific drills. He needs more training time to get up to speed, and I believe he could start playing after the upcoming break,” he said. “We also have a few players dealing with minor issues, and we will decide on their status tomorrow. It is normal to have players managing slight knocks from time to time.” Midfielder Julien De Sart said Al Rayyan were determined to make a strong start to their continental campaign. “We expect a tough match. We know we must give our best in every game to stand a chance of winning,” he said. “As the coach mentioned, we are entering this tournament with great ambition. It is an honour to play in the AFC Champions League Two. We will take it one match at a time and aim to go as far as possible.” De Sart, who has had to contend with injuries and time on the bench, said he was ready to contribute whenever called upon. “That’s football. I believe that throughout your career, you go through periods of injury or time on the bench, and you simply have to adapt to the circumstances,” he said. “I feel I am constantly improving; the more I play, the better I feel. So, if the coach needs me tomorrow, I am ready, and if I’m on the bench, well, that’s just football. Regardless of how long I play, I will try to give my best in training and in matches. As I said, I am ready for however many minutes I play, whether it’s 10 minutes or 90. I will give my all, and the rest will follow.” 

Qatar’s Al Gharafa gave Al Hilal a stern test before going down 2-1 to the Saudi Arabian giants in their opening Asian Champions League Elite match in Riyadh on Tuesday.Al Hilal, bidding for a fifth Asian title, made the brighter start but the game was disrupted midway through the first half when both sides were reduced to 10 men.Al Gharafa took the game to Al Hilal in the opening minutes as Yassine Bounou was forced to make saves to deny Adam Ounas and Jang Hyun-soo as the home side started with 18-year-old Kader Meite up front.Al Hilal worked their way into the game with Gabriel Martinelli having a left foot effort from an acute angle saved by Ahmed Kone before Sergej Milinkovic-Savic nodded over unchallenged from a good position.The game took a turn in the 32nd minute when Crysencio Summerville was shown the red card for shoving Abdulrahman Al Rasheedi off the field but in the heated exchange, Ismael Bennacer was also sent off for tugging at the Al Hilal forward’s hair.Al Rasheedi was involved again when he tripped Saimon Bouabre in the box, gifting Al Hilal a late first half penalty which Ruben Never nervelessly slotted home in the third minute of added time.Al Hilal continued to test Kone’s reflexes after the interval with Neves, Martinelli and Bouabre all having a go but the Al Gharafa custodian stood strong to keep the Qatari side in the game.Maintaining sustained pressure, it was no surprise when the second goal arrived in the 72nd minute, Neves delivered a perfect cross to the back post for Milinkovic-Savic to power home from close range.Al Gharafa struck in stoppage time through a spectacular Alaaeddin Hasan strike from outside the box but it was nothing more than a consolation with the final whistle blowing seconds after the restart.A tough test awaits Al Hilal next as the Saudi Pro League side face another Qatari side in Al Sadd on October 13 while Al Gharafa will count on home advantage when they host Esteghlal FC of Iran a day earlier. 

Al Sadd endured a disappointing start to their AFC Champions League Elite campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Esteghlal of Iran at Basra International Stadium in Iraq on Monday, while Al Shamal were denied a famous victory by a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad at Al Bayt Stadium.Jasir Asani capitalised on a defensive error to fire Esteghlal ahead in the ninth minute before Saeid Saharkhizan extended their lead two minutes after the break and Esmaeil Gholizadeh sealed the match five minutes into injury time.In a match largely dominated by the 19-time Qatar Stars League champions, Al Sadd side were let down by poor finishing, with only one shot on target and a goal overturned by VAR.Razvan Lucescu’s men made the stronger start but it was Esteghlal who struck the opening blow in the ninth minute when a wayward pass by Claudinho gifted the ball to Asani, who rounded defender Boualem Khoukhi and lashed the ball beyond Meshaal Barsham.The 2011 champions gradually regained their composure, with Roberto Firmino connecting to Hashim Ali’s cross and looping his header over the bar in the 19th minute. The Brazilian then set up Claudinho 10 minutes later but the striker fired just wide of the right post after weaving past the defence.The ever-threatening Firmino’s shot from the edge of the area in the 35th minute forced keeper Habib Abbasi into a diving save as Al Saad pushed forward in search of the equaliser only to be frustrated at the last.A counterattack by the nine-time IR Iran champions in the 42nd minute had Barsham twisting in mid-air to deny a powerful strike by Amir Mohammad Razzaghinia from the edge of the box before Firmino closed the action in the first half by heading wide of the left post.Saharkhizan gave Esteghlal the perfect start to the second half when he latched on to a through ball from Asani two minutes in, evaded a tackle from Paulo Otavio and drilled the ball through Barsham’s legs into the left corner.Al Saad thought they had reduced the scoreline in the 57th minute when Firmino struck from point-blank range but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a handball by Yusuf Abdurisag.Gholizadeh put the match beyond Al Saad’s reach five minutes into stoppage time when he picked up Mohammadhossein Eslami’s cross, snuck in between two defenders and booted the ball past Barsham. Wijnaldum breaks Shamal's heartsAl Shamal, meanwhile, looked set to mark their first appearance in the continental championship with a memorable victory after Baghdad Bounedjah put them ahead in the 63rd minute. However, Georginio Wijnaldum struck with virtually the last kick of the match to earn Al Ittihad a point.Al Shamal, who qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite for the first time with a runners-up finish in the QSL last season, had been forced to defend desperately in the dying moments against the 2004 and 2005 champions and Wijnaldum eventually struck.The visitors had made a positive start with Babacar Seck shovelling Dion Lopy’s early strike from outside the area to partial safety, forcing Musaab Khidir to knock the ball out for a corner while the Al Shamal goalkeeper gathered Ahmed Al Ghamdi’s weak shot soon after.It was the home side that went closest to opening the scoring in the 16th minute when Mohamed Ben Romdhane received possession inside the penalty area from Alex Collado, quickly turning to unleash a rising right-foot shot that clipped the top of the crossbar.Al Shamal hit the frame of the goal again with 12 minutes remaining in the half, Baghdad Bounedjah’s crossing from the right towards the near post from where Wesley Said threw himself at a header that thumped against the woodwork.Steve Bergwijn tested Seck from distance two minutes from the end of the half with a low shot that the Al Shamal goalkeeper was fortunate to push to safety after miss-timing his intervention.Al Shamal’s Callado was denied by Predrag Rajkovic eight minutes after the restart when the Spanish midfielder cut back onto his right foot to shoot towards goal but, by the 63rd minute,Georgin the home side had gone ahead.Bounedjah shuttled possession to Ben Romdhane and, after surging into the penalty area, the Al Shamal captain received a return pass that set him up to fire the ball beyond Rajkovic.Wijnaldum and Bergwijn both went close to pulling Al Ittihad level while Ben Romdhane had the ball in the Al Ittihad net again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.But Wijnaldum calmly stroked in the equaliser from just inside the penalty area in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Bergiwjn’s cutback from the left side to salvage a point for Jens Wissing’s side. 

Al Sadd will begin their AFC Champions League Elite 2026/27 campaign against Esteghlal FC of Iran on Monday, with the Qatar champions aiming to make a strong start to their bid for continental glory.The 2011 champions stunned Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in the last 16 of last season's competition before suffering a penalty shootout heartbreak against Japan's Vissel Kobe in the quarter-finals. Al Sadd will be confident of extending their positive record against Esteghlal, having won twice and drawn three times in their last five meetings with the Iranian side.Esteghlal are returning to the competition after last appearing in the 2024/25 edition. The Iranian club will be determined to improve on their previous campaign, when they failed to score in six of their 10 matches.Al Sadd coach Razvan Lucescu said his team were ready for the challenge and aware of the strength of their opponents. “This is a new and different championship from the local league. Esteghlal is a strong team and has good players,” the Romanian said at the pre-match press conference. “We must focus from the beginning of the match to come out with a positive result, and we must do our utmost to achieve that.”The coach said Al Sadd would need to maintain complete concentration, adding that while some players had remained in Doha through injury, those in the squad in Basra were fully prepared. “We have a tough match ahead of us against Esteghlal, and we must focus on each game as it comes, and I will give my best to achieve what we are striving for,” Lucescu said. Al Shamal face tough Al Ittihad testAl Shamal could hardly have been handed a tougher opponent for their AFC Champions League Elite debut, with the Qatari side facing two-time champions Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia at Al Bayt Stadium on Monday.Al Shamal will become the ninth Qatari club to compete in the AFC Champions League Elite, while a victory would make them only the third team from Qatar to win their opening continental match. The North side head into their historic debut in good form, having started their Qatar Stars League campaign with two wins and two draws.Al Ittihad, meanwhile, will be eager to challenge for the continental title after missing out last season and believe they have the quality to overcome Al Shamal. Monday's match will be the first meeting between the two clubs, although Al Ittihad have won their last two matches against Qatari opposition.Al Shamal coach David Prats said his team were ready for the challenge and relishing the opportunity to make their continental debut against one of Asia's leading clubs. “The first appearance in the Asian Championship is a wonderful feeling, especially since we will be playing our first match against a great team with a history in the tournament, which is Al Ittihad Saudi,” the Spanish coach said.“We will face one of the best teams in Asia, Al Ittihad, and our preparations for the match went as they should, like any other match. The most important thing is to show good character and identity, and we will try as much as possible to focus and play strongly and show that we are highly competitive.”Prats acknowledged the strength of the Saudi side, particularly in attack, while noting the changes they have made, including the appointment of a new coach. “We know that Al Ittihad is one of the strongest teams in Asia, and they have made many changes, the biggest of which is the coach, and we also know their attacking strength,” he said.The Al Shamal coach said he hoped to use the pressure of the occasion as motivation for his players. “I want to turn the pressure into a positive force for the team. We want to compete and try to win. Our goal is to play, enjoy ourselves, and demonstrate the strength and identity of the North team in any competition we participate in,” Prats said. 

PSV Eindhoven came from a goal down to draw 1-1 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk and snap a woeful record in their opening matches of Champions League campaigns on Thursday.The Dutch club had lost their Matchday 1 fixtures in their last five Champions League appearances and trailed at halftime before Sergino Dest ensured a point.In the other early kickoff on Thursday, Roma also drew 1-1 away at Fenerbahce. Action was continuing later with Bayern Munich and Manchester United both getting their group-stage campaigns under way.Right near the end of a cagey first half Shakhtar stunned the hosts when Gleiker Mendoza cut in from wide and sent a stunning low shot beyond the dive of Matej Kovar.PSV responded immediately after the break as the ball was fed across the area to Dest who calmly found the bottom corner with an inch-perfect shot.PSV could not find a way to record their first Matchday 1 victory since 2015, but at least they have started the campaign with a point as they seek to make up for last year's disappointing 28th position in the group phase.Roma took the lead in Istanbul in the 39th minute when Donyell Malen rolled a pass to Bryan Cristante who beat Ederson with a bouncing finish.It was Cristante's first goal in the Champions League proper, 15 years since making his debut in the competition as a 16-year-old for Milan.Fenerbahce, back in the Champions League after an 18-year absence, rallied though and equalised three minutes after halftime when Mason Greenwood slipped a pass through to Archie Brown who clipped a finish over Mile Svilar.Roma were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute when Karem Akturkoglu was penalised for a foul on Paulo Dybala but a VAR check ruled that the challenge had taken place outside the area.Both sides went for the victory in a high-intensity second half and Fenerbahce came closest late on when Nathan Ake headed against the Roma crossbar.

Raphinha continued his superb goalscoring form with a brace as Barcelona demolished Feyenoord 5-1 to begin their Champions League campaign in perfect fashion.Karim Adeyemi curled home brilliantly from long range in between Raphinha's strikes and Lamine Yamal bent in a free-kick as Hansi Flick's team made light work of their Dutch visitors. After Sem Steijn pulled one back, Barca substitute Gabriel Jesus netted a fifth, the forward's first goal since joining from Arsenal this summer.The Catalan giants, who last won the competition in 2015, have triumphed in all five of their matches across all competitions this season – and scored five goals in four of them.Winger Raphinha has been playing up front after Barca sold Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, and has rapidly taken to his new position, plundering eight goals in five games."Playing in front of our fans we always have to show perfect football, or nearly perfect, and with the support of the fans it's a lot easier," Barca captain Raphinha said. "I think we were very good, from the start of the game, controlling the game and with the chances we had we were able to score and it gives us a lot of confidence."The Brazil international said that despite the club's excellent start, there was still a long way to go. "In a season as long as this, there are many ups and downs," added Raphinha. "Starting the season like this obviously gives us a lot of confidence and we have to continue like this. We have to hope the downs are as small as possible."Flick made five changes to the team that thrashed Valencia on Sunday in La Liga, although he maintained star attackers Yamal and Raphinha, as well as new arrival Rodri in his line-up.After days of baking weather in Barcelona, a storm broke ahead of the game, lashing rain down on the Camp Nou pitch and sending supporters scurrying for shelter. By the time it stopped pouring early in the first half, Barcelona were already ahead.Raphinha netted the opener after three minutes. The Brazilian was razor sharp to break into the box and cut inside, sending two defenders sliding the wrong way on the slick turf, before slotting home.Adeyemi, in for Anthony Gordon, doubled Barcelona's lead with a superb strike from outside the area, bent beyond Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst. Anis Hadj Moussa threatened for Feyenoord at the other end but Joan Garcia pushed out his shot at the near post.Barca kept generating openings and defender Joao Cancelo came close to adding a third when he skinned Givairo Read and crashed a shot against the outside of the post. Raphinha netted again before the hour mark for Barca's third, running on to Pedri's perfect through-ball and slotting home.The Dutch side thought they had pulled one back straight away when Nacho Ferri slotted home but it was disallowed after a VAR review for offside in the build-up. Yamal bagged Barca's fourth, direct from a free-kick which crept through the wall, his first such strike for the club.Feyenoord sent on Shaqueel van Persie, the 19-year-old son of former Dutch international Robin van Persie, to try and salvage some pride.Steijn eventually pulled one back for the visitors when he escaped Jules Kounde and Goncalo Borges picked him out with a dangerous low cross to the back post.It was the only blot on Barca's copy book on an otherwise strong start to their league phase, rounded off by Jesus's glancing header from Yamal's cross for the fifth. Demirovic hits hat-trick in Stuttgart's winMeanwhile, Ermedin Demirovic struck ​a 12-minute first-half ‌hat-trick to give VfB Stuttgart a ‌3-1 ⁠victory over ‌Viking Stavanger.In Stuttgart, Demirovic opened ‌the scoring after ‌20 minutes with ⁠a touch at the near post, but ⁠Viking, making their ⁠first appearance in the Champions League group phase, were level two minutes later when Zlatko Tripic finished a swift counter-attack with his left foot.Demirovic quickly re-established the lead in the ​26th minute and then completed the hat-trick with a hooked volley six minutes later. 

Aston Villa finally ended their goal drought as they kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 win against Club Brugge.Unai Emery's side have made a dismal start in the Premier League after a turbulent close-season marred by the departures of many of their Europa League-winning stars.They are goalless in the top flight and had mustered just one shot on target in their first three matches. But Villa's opening game of the league phase in Europe's elite club competition provided a welcome tonic as they won for the first time this term.In torrential rain at the Jan Breydel Stadium, John McGinn put Villa ahead in the early stages with his team's first goal this season. Hugo Vetlesen equalised soon afterwards, but Emiliano Buendia restored the visitors' lead before Nicolas Jackson's first goal for Villa increased their advantage on the stroke of half-time.Nicolo Tresoldi's penalty after the interval set up a tense finale, but Villa held firm. Villa can now turn their focus to securing a first top-flight win against Nottingham Forest this weekend before resuming their Champions League fixtures against Fenerbahce in October.Villa won the Europa League last season to end their 30-year trophy drought, but the team that made history by beating Freiburg in Istanbul has been ripped apart in a matter of months.Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa were all sold in a summer of upheaval. The rebuild, sparked by Villa's need to stay within football's financial regulations, is a major test for Emery and this was the first sign that he can find a solution.Villa thrashed Brugge in the Champions League last 16 in 2025 and once again they proved too strong for the Belgian club.After three weeks of frustration, Villa scored their first goal of the season in the 11th minute. Pau Torres was the catalyst with an incisive run and pass that picked out McGinn, who curled a fine finish past Yann Sommer.George Hemmings nearly doubled Villa's lead moments later, but Sommer was equal to the 19-year-old's effort. Hemmings squandered another chance when he scuffed wide with the goal at his mercy.Brugge took advantage of those misses to level in the 18th minute. Teed up by Jan Virgili's dynamic burst, Vetlesen punished Villa's hesitant defending as he lashed a clinical strike past Zion Suzuki into the bottom corner.But Villa were clicking in attack at last and they regained the lead three minutes later. It was a move of ruthless efficiency as Joao Gomes picked out Buendia and his unerring strike gave Sommer no chance.With both sides pouring forward with abandon, Jackson bagged Villa's third in the 43rd minute. Jackson was much-maligned during his disappointing spell at Chelsea, but the £65mn ($88mn) signing showed impressive composure to hold off two Brugge defenders and evade Sommer before slotting into the empty net.Aaron Wan-Bissaka gifted Brugge a lifeline in the 61st minute when he handled Joaquin Seys's cross, conceding a penalty that Tresoldi stroked past Suzuki. Villa were under seige as Brugge pushed for an equaliser.They narrowly avoided blowing the lead when Tresoldi's header was fumbled onto the post by Suzuki. Tresoldi should have levelled in stoppage-time, but the striker's header was straight at Suzuki as Emery breathed a sigh of relief. Marin fires AEK to victoryAEK Athens also ⁠made a winning start, beating Austrian side LASK 1-0 in Greece thanks to Romanian midfielder Razvan Marin's curling free kick midway through the first half.Marin provided the decisive moment for AEK in the 21st minute, curling a free kick from ​outside the penalty area on the left-hand side into the top corner beyond the goalkeeper's reach. 

Another UEFA Champions League season gets going this week with the beginning of the league phase as Paris Saint-Germain bid to join the tiny band of clubs to have won the competition three years running.PSG successfully defended their title last season when they beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, retaining the trophy they won for the first time in their history 12 months earlier.Luis Enrique's side have already secured their status as one of the competition's greatest teams by winning it back-to-back, something only Real Madrid had previously achieved since the inception of the modern Champions League in 1992.Winning three in a row would be on another level entirely. Real did exactly that under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018, The only other teams to manage such a feat are Ajax (1971-73) and Bayern Munich (1974-76), while Madrid also won the first five editions of the European Cup from 1956 to 1960."Our objectives are clear. I want to win important trophies and there are none more important than the Champions League," said Enrique, who also led Barcelona to glory in 2015.The back-to-back titles for the French giants have coincided with the introduction of the new Champions League format, with 36 teams in the league phase now playing eight games against eight different opponents. The Parisians struggled in the league phase in each of the last two campaigns, finishing outside the top eight and having to come through the additional play-off round to make the last 16.Tough draws were partly responsible for that, and PSG will face some familiar opponents this time in Manchester City, Barcelona and Aston Villa. With each passing year, the prospect of a team other than one of Europe's super clubs winning the Champions League seems more remote. Arsenal to take next step?The Premier League's financial strength means all of its representatives can be expected to feature prominently, with Arsenal chief among them. Over the last three years, the Gunners have lost in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and then the final. There is therefore a logical next step for Mikel Arteta's side,Arsenal topped the league phase last season with a perfect record. They have a tough start this time away to Napoli. There are five English clubs involved, with Manchester City and Liverpool joined by the returning Manchester United and Villa.Bayern Munich are formidable, while Jose Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid charged with the task of leading them back to continental glory. Barcelona are itching to get their hands on the trophy again. It is hard to see beyond one of those clubs, although Inter Milan could have a say and Atletico Madrid will be desperate to reach a final to be held in their stadium.The only club outside Spain, England, Germany, Italy and France to have won the Champions League in the last 30 years remains Mourinho's Porto in 2004. Plenty of new names will add freshness to the competition, including Como, who finished fourth in Serie A last season under Cesc Fabregas to qualify at the expense of AC Milan and Juventus.Viking Stavanger are in the Champions League proper for the first time after winning a first Norwegian title in 34 years. Sabah start with a trip to Old Trafford after winning a first Azerbaijani title and coming through four qualifying ties.Their manager, Valdas Dambrauskas, got into coaching with the money he made appearing on the Lithuanian version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. "Since I was 12, when I realised I will not be a professional player, I knew I wanted to be a football coach," he said. "I cannot guess what would have happened without this game, but I believe I would have found a way to achieve my dream."Sabah might not qualify for the next stage – although compatriots Qarabag did that last season – but just being in the league phase is worth almost 20mn euros ($23.2mn) at a minimum, significant sums for clubs from lesser leagues.The Champions League winners pocket around 90mn euros in prize money, before adding millions more, notably from television 2 it is understood PSG earned around 150mn euros for each of their last two victories. 

The reigning T20 world champions India will play Japan for the first time in an international match when the teams meet at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi on September 22, the two cricket boards said on Friday. The T20 fixture will mark the first time Japan will face a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in men's cricket. "To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association," JCA Chief Executive Naoki Miyaji said in a statement. Japan became an Affiliate Member of the ICC in 1989 before gaining Associate status in 2005. "The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan," BCCI Honorary Secretary, Mr Devajit Saikia, said.
