Doha Design District (DDD) has announced four winners of its Public Art Open Call initiative, showcasing their works and providing an opportunity for the winning projects to be developed into installations across Msheireb Downtown.The winning projects are: ‘Whispering Leaves’ by Guillaume Rousere and Maryam Faraj AlSuwaidi (France & Qatar, based in Qatar); ‘Gravity Drops Along a Surface’ by Maryam Aljomairi and Latifa Alkhayat-Maraj, Architecture and Design Practice (Bahrain, based in Bahrain); ‘Desert in Motion’ by Dana Anas Karuvattil, architect (India, based in Qatar) and ‘Fanayeen’ by Amanda and Joe Bou Abboud, Boo Design Studio (Lebanon & Qatar, based in Qatar).The four winning teams will move into development and installation of their projects across Msheireb Downtown in the days to come.**media[478605]**The winning designs were determined through a two-stage evaluation that combined an independent jury assessment with an open public vote, ensuring that both expert judgement and community sentiment shaped the outcome. The winners were announced at a special programme where the works of all 20 finalists were displayed.Speaking at the event, Dana Kazic, director of Doha Design District announced the winners, explaining the selection process and how the jury and the public voting decided the winners.“There were over 220 submissions from 53 countries. 20 finalists were selected from this global pool of more than 220 submissions and the finalists represented 14 nationalities.  Out of the 20 finalist, four winning projects were selected based on jury assessment and public voting.“We have been overwhelmed by the response and by the creativity of the projects submitted. The Public Art Open Call is a clear reflection of Doha Design District’s role in shaping the public realm, and of its power to invite the public to take part in designing their own cities and neighbourhoods. This is part of our broader mission to elevate design and to give creators the opportunity to emerge and express their passion,” she added.The four winning teams will now move into development, working to realise their installations across Msheireb Downtown Doha and transforming the district, piece by piece, into an open-air stage for contemporary artistic expression.The winners were determined by a distinguished jury, bringing together some of the region’s most respected voices in design, culture and urban development, with representation from Msheireb Properties, Qatar Museums and Qatar Creates alongside a public vote that invited the community to help shape the future of the city’s art and landscaping.The jury committee commented:  “All of the shortlisted projects were creative and authentic, which made for a genuinely difficult selection process. The four winning designs were chosen against clearly defined criteria, and we congratulate the winners and look forward to seeing their projects realised. Our message to every artist who took part is simple: keep your passion alive and continue your creative journey, because it is through voices like yours that the design of our public spaces is shaped. We thank all applicants for their effort, time and dedication.”Prior to announcing the winners, there was a panel discussion on space and place and how placemaking has evolved over the years. The panel included Sheikha Reem al-Thani, Deputy CEO, Exhibitions, Public Art, and Rubaiya, Qatar Museums; Dr Hameda Yousef Janahi, assistant professor, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Qatar University; and Dr Samie Kayani, sustainable urbanism specialist at Earthna, Qatar Foundation, and the session was moderated by Abdulrahman al-Mana, city and regional planner at the Ministry of Municipality.

HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani received a telephone call from Prime Minister of the sisterly Republic of Sudan Dr. Kamil El Tayeb Idris.  The Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan offered his condolences on the death of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, may Allah have mercy on him.The two sides also discussed bilateral cooperation and the means to enhance it, in addition to discussing several issues of joint interest. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Thursday from Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who offered condolences on the passing of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, praying to Almighty Allah to grant him His boundless mercy and admit him into His vast Paradise.For his part, HH the Amir expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the UAE Vice President for his heartfelt fraternal sentiments. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani received a phone call from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Abbas Araghchi.During the call, the latest developments in the military escalation between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran over the past two days were reviewed. HE Prime Minister expressed the State of Qatar's condemnation and rejection of the attacks that targeted commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz despite the atmosphere of calm and the efforts made to reduce escalation in the region. His Excellency stressed that such actions would undermine trust, threaten international maritime security, and harm efforts to consolidate regional security and stability. His Excellency also stressed the need for all parties to commit to dialogue and diplomacy, and to implement what was agreed upon within the framework of the memorandum of understanding, in order to contribute to maintaining the security of the region, preserving the gains that have been achieved, and enhancing regional stability. During the call, HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated the State of Qatar’s support for all efforts aimed at containing the escalation and reaching a comprehensive agreement that contributes to consolidating security and stability and achieving sustainable peace in the region.

 His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received a phone call today  from US President Donald Trump.The two sides discussed the latest updates in the Middle East in light of ongoing political and security developments as well as regional and international efforts aimed at de-escalation and promoting stability.HH the Amir stressed the importance of prioritising political and diplomatic solutions and dialogue between all parties in order to strengthen regional security and stability and prevent further escalation.The call also addressed the importance of continuing dialogue to resolve current issues with an emphasis on safeguarding maritime navigation, ensuring the security of strategic waterways, and maintaining the smooth flow of global supply and energy chains. 

HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Friday from Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.During the call, the two sides discussed the strong fraternal relations between the two countries and ways to further enhance and develop them in a manner that serves mutual interests and the aspirations of the two peoples.They also addressed the latest regional and international developments, particularly efforts aimed at strengthening security and stability in the region, and exchanged views on a number of issues of mutual concern.Both sides stressed the importance of continued coordination and consultation on various issues in a way that supports regional and international peace and security. 

Doha Design District has launched a Public Art Open Call inviting creatives to propose innovative artworks for public spaces. The initiative aims to integrate art into the urban environment, strengthen the district’s identity, and enhance visitor experience. It focuses on placemaking, cultural expression (including Qatari identity), public engagement, and collaboration, while emphasising sustainable, long-lasting artworks. Director of Doha Design District Dana Kazic said: “Public art plays a transformative role in shaping how people experience and connect with a place. Through this open call, we invite creatives to contribute to Doha Design District’s evolving identity, while reinforcing our commitment to supporting artistic innovation and positioning Doha as a vibrant, globally connected cultural hub. We invite artists to be part of this initiative and contribute to our mission to transform our downtown into a dynamic artistic neighbourhood, while showcasing their creativity to the wider community.” Doha Design District is accepting submissions until May 14 for its Public Art Open Call. The competition is open to a wide range of participants, including designers, artists, architects, collectives, and community groups, with students and emerging professionals eligible if supported by a mentor. Proposals can include sculptures, installations, murals, and community-focused projects, and must be submitted digitally (in English or Arabic) via the official website with a concept description, visuals, and applicant details. Multiple entries are allowed. Submissions will be judged on originality, cultural relevance, public engagement, sustainability, and feasibility. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani Saturday received a telephone call from Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi. During the call, the two sides discussed efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, and emphasised the continuation of negotiations between US and Iran.The prime minister reiterated Qatar's support for all efforts aimed at reducing tensions and achieving peaceful solutions that enhance security and stability in the region.He also stressed the need for concerted efforts to spare the peoples of the region the consequences of escalation and the importance of continued coordination with brotherly and friendly countries to overcome differences through diplomatic means.

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani Saturday received a phone call from Angola's Minister of External Relations Tete Antonio.During the call, they discussed ways to advance bilateral co-operation between the two countries, as well as to promote a peaceful solution pathway between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda.HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Qatar's unyielding position, calling for conflicts to be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means, and for the respect of international law principles to strengthen stability, global peace, and security.
