UNRWA shelters in Gaza overwhelmed as 75,000 displaced people seek refuge

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said that approximately 75,000 displaced people in the Gaza Strip are currently sheltering in more than 100 of its facilities, despite most of them being damaged by Israeli bombardment and overcrowded. In a post on its X platform, UNRWA said humanitarian conditions in these shelters have become extremely dire, with acute shortages of water, food, and basic supplies. It also warned of a deteriorating health situation and the spread of diseases due to overcrowding and poor sanitation.UNRWA affirmed that its teams continue to operate despite limited resources to provide urgent assistance to the displaced, calling on the international community to take immediate action to ensure the protection of civilians and improve the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. It also noted that 90% of Gaza's population suffers from malnutrition.Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, UNRWA has faced the biggest humanitarian crisis in its history, as its schools and health facilities have turned into temporary shelters housing hundreds of thousands of displaced people, amid widespread destruction and the collapse of basic services.

After two years of genocide and scorched-earth policies, a devastated Gaza longs for peace

After two years of a war marked by genocide, starvation, displacement, and relentless bombardment, Gaza now looks toward peace after the war turned it into a ghost city—its infrastructure destroyed, its devastated economy crippled, its population drastically reduced, and its trade, industry, environment, and public health all under threat. This means that the besieged Gaza Strip no longer exists as it did before Oct. 7, 2023, the date when the brutal Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip began, which today marks its second year and tomorrow enters its third. With unparalleled brutality and savagery, Israel committed horrific crimes and genocide in the Palestinian territory, using its entire arsenal of lethal weapons for killing, destruction, and genocide through indiscriminate bombing, suffocating siege, repeated incursions, and systematic destruction of various parts of the Strip—from north to south and east to west. The Strip has endured continuous suffering, losing countless martyrs relentlessly for over 730 days, in what has become the longest and bloodiest war in the history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and possibly in the history of the entire world. The conflict has transformed from a military battle into a humanitarian and geopolitical turmoil that is reshaping the entire region. Reports reveal indescribable human suffering and massive destruction affecting every aspect of life in the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for more than 18 years. This is the result of a scorched-earth policy implemented by Israeli occupation forces, blatantly disregarding all recognized international and humanitarian values, charters and principles applicable during times of war. Official and international reports state that most cities and refugee camps in the Strip have turned into ghost towns, emptied of their residents who were forcibly displaced and pushed toward the southern part of the Strip. The area has been described as a disaster zone, with scenes of destruction stretching from the eastern border with the Israeli entity to the Mediterranean Sea. Almost nothing remains intact—homes lie in ruins, buildings have collapsed, schools are destroyed, and mosques, universities, and institutions have been leveled to the ground.According to documented reports and testimonies, the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe that has struck the Strip defies description. Tens of thousands have been martyred, hundreds of thousands wounded, and more than two million people live in tattered tents or the rubble of their homes. Meanwhile, famine is expanding, food security teeters on the brink of collapse, clean water is extremely scarce, and diseases are widespread. Hospitals are nearly incapacitated due to severe shortages of medicines and medical equipment, putting patients' and the injured's lives at constant risk. Gaza has become the largest open-air theater of suffering in the 21st century.According to the Government Media Office in Gaza, approximately 90% of the Strip has been destroyed after two years of war. Thirty-eight hospitals across the Strip have been either destroyed or rendered non-functional, while the occupation army has taken control of about 80% of the Strip's area through invasions, displacement, and continuous bombardment. The office reported that since the start of the war, the occupation army has dropped more than 200,000 tons of explosives on Gaza. Additionally, 95% of the Strip's schools have been partially or completely damaged as a result of the bombing. The Government Media Office also indicated that 67,160 Palestinians have been martyred, the majority of them children and women, and 169,679 others have been injured. The office further stated that 2,700 families have been completely wiped out and erased from the civil registry, and more than 460 people have died from hunger and malnutrition amid the ongoing siege and shortage of humanitarian supplies. It also clarified that 244 government headquarters and 292 sports and educational facilities have been destroyed, in addition to widespread damage to municipal services. Thousands of commercial establishments, banks, currency exchange shops, and central markets have also been affected. Preliminary estimates of losses across 15 economic sectors amount to $70 billion, reflecting direct impact only and excluding indirect effects caused by halted production, brain drain, and reduced commercial capacity.Housing sector losses alone are estimated at nearly $28 billion due to the complete or partial destruction of approximately 268,000 housing units, alongside widespread displacement and loss of property. Regarding electricity and energy facilities, direct losses are estimated at around $1.4 billion.According to the United Nations, the volume of rubble is estimated at more than 61 million tons, 15% of which is contaminated with toxic materials. The organization states that over 1.5 million people are in urgent need of emergency shelter amid severe food shortages and an almost complete absence of medical services, especially as organizations like the International Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders have been forced to suspend their operations due to the intensity of the brutal Israeli bombing.

Four martyred, 10 injured as Israeli Forces intensify bombardment in Gaza

Four Palestinian citizens were martyred on Thursday in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip as the Israeli occupation forces escalated the aggression on Gaza City, intensifying the aerial and artillery bombardment and detonating booby-trapped robots to destroy homes and force citizens to leave the city. The Palestinian news agency (WAFA) said that four citizens were martyred, and ten others were injured when Israeli aircraft bombed a house in the Block 7 area of Al-Bureij refugee camp, central Gaza Strip. The occupation forces carried out operations to destroy infrastructure and demolish residential buildings south and north of Gaza City, forcing citizens to flee to the southern part of the Strip, WAFA said. This escalation in Gaza City and its neighborhoods comes amid the continued disruption of internet and landline services in Gaza and North Gaza governorates due to the ongoing aggression and the targeting of key network routes, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. The ongoing aggression on Gaza City has resulted in the forced displacement of more than 40,000 people over the past two days, according to the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric. Medical sources announced last night that 99 citizens were martyred in massacres committed by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, including 77 martyrs in the northern Gaza Strip. Since Oct. 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation has committed genocidal crimes in the Gaza Strip, killing 65,062 and injuring 165,697 wounded, most of them children and women. A famine has also claimed the lives of 432 Palestinians, including 146 children.

53 killed in Gaza amid bombardment

Israel controls 40% of Gaza City, a military spokesperson said Thursday, as its bombardment forced more Palestinians from their homes there, while thousands of residents defied Israeli orders to leave, remaining behind in the ruins in the path of Israel's latest advance.Gaza health authorities said Israeli fire across the enclave had killed at least 53 people Thursday, mostly in Gaza City, where Israeli forces have advanced through the outer suburbs and are now a few kilometres (miles) from the city centre."We continue to damage Hamas' infrastructure. Today we hold 40% of the territory of Gaza City," Israeli military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin told a news conference, naming the Zeitoun and Sheikh Radwan neighbourhoods. "The operation will continue to expand and intensify in the coming days.""We will continue everywhere," he said, adding that the mission will only end when Israel's remaining hostages are returned and Hamas' rule ends.Defrin confirmed that army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir told cabinet ministers that without a day-after plan, they would have to impose military rule in Gaza. Far-right members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have been pushing for Israel to impose military rule in Gaza and establish settlements there, which Netanyahu has so far ruled out.Israel launched the offensive in Gaza City on August 10. The campaign has prompted international criticism because of the humanitarian crisis in the area and has provoked unusual levels of concern within Israel, including accounts of tension over strategy between some military commanders and political leaders."This time, I am not leaving my house. I want to die here. It doesn't matter if we move out or stay. Tens of thousands of those who left their homes were killed by Israel too, so why bother?" Um Nader, a mother of five from Gaza City, told Reuters via text message.Residents said Israel bombarded Gaza City's Zeitoun, Sabra, Tuffah, and Shejaia districts from ground and air. Tanks pushed into the eastern part of the Sheikh Radwan district northwest of the city centre, destroying houses and causing fires in tent encampments. In a heavy bombardment in the Tuffah neighbourhood, medics said five houses were damaged by Israeli strikes that killed eight people and wounded dozens more."The Israeli occupation targeted a gathering of civilians and several homes in the Mashahra area of the Tuffah neighbourhood a fire belt that completely destroyed four buildings," said Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson of the territory's civil emergency service."Even if the Israeli occupation issues warnings, there are no places that can accommodate the civilians; there are no alternate places for the people to go to."Displacement could further endanger the most vulnerable, including many children suffering from malnutrition, said Amjad al-Shawa, head of the Palestinian NGOs Network, an umbrella group of Palestinian NGOs that coordinates with the UN and international humanitarian agencies."This is going to be the most dangerous displacement since the war started," said Shawa. "People's refusal to leave despite the bombardment and the killing is a sign that they have lost faith."Palestinian and UN officials say nowhere is safe in Gaza, including areas Israel designates humanitarian zones.Health officials in Gaza say 370 people, including 131 children, have died of malnutrition and starvation caused by acute food shortages, mostly in recent weeks. Israel says it is taking measures to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza, including increasing aid into the enclave.Prospects for a ceasefire and a deal to release the remaining 48 hostages, 20 of whom are thought to still be alive, appear dim.Two Democratic US senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley told reporters after a week-long trip to assess the situation in Gaza and the West Bank: "Based on our conversations and our observations, we came away with the inexplicable conclusion that the Netanyahu government is engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Gaza and slow-motion ethnic cleansing in the West Bank."
