The Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel and Badminton Federation has announced a new partnership with Doha Bank Group, under which the Bank will become the title sponsor of the Qatar Ladies Open (WTA 1000) beginning in 2027.The partnership aligns with the Federation's commitment to expanding cooperation with leading national institutions, supporting efforts to develop the tournament and strengthen its status as one of the premier tennis events hosted by the State of Qatar.Speaking at a press conference today, HE President of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel and Badminton Federation Nasser bin Ghanim Al Khelaifi underscored the importance of the new partnership with Doha Bank, saying it represents a significant addition to the tournament and reflects confidence in its standing as a prestigious event on the global Women's Tennis Association (WTA) calendar.He added that the agreement reflects Doha Bank Group's active community role through its support for sports and a range of events in Qatar.Al Khelaifi expressed confidence that the collaboration would contribute to the tournament's continued success and showcase Qatar's prominent position as a host and organizer of major sporting events.For his part, HE Doha Bank Group CEO Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Fahad bin Faisal Al-Thani expressed his pride in strengthening their partnership with the Qatar Tennis Federation through Doha Bank Group's sponsorship of the Qatar Ladies Open tournament, one of the most prominent events on the global tennis calendar.He added that the partnership reinforces the Bank's commitment to supporting Qatar's sports sector and helping consolidate the country's status as a global destination for major sporting championships and events, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.The Doha Bank Group CEO added that the Bank is proud to have the prestigious tournament bear its name, reflecting its ambition to build high-quality, sustainable partnerships and support Qatar's growing presence on the international sports stage.The Qatar Ladies Open tennis tournament is the longest-running event of its kind in the region. Its inaugural edition was held in 2001, when Swiss star Martina Hingis claimed the first title. Czech player Karolina Muchova won the 2026 edition after defeating Canada's Victoria Mboko in the final, securing the Golden Falcon trophy and her first WTA 1000-level title.The 2027 edition of the Qatar Ladies Open tournament is scheduled to take place from February 8 to 14.

Credible budget policy is needed more than ever, says Bailey

Governments need to redouble efforts to restore confidence in their public finances, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said on Thursday, as global bond markets come under pressure from high borrowing and rising inflation linked to the Iran war. On a day when British government borrowing costs hit their highest in decades, part of a global bond selloff that has especially hammered France, Bailey said budget policies needed to be seen as credible to rein in investors’ demands for higher returns. “Whatever the stance of fiscal policy is, it must be credible and directed at stability, and be seen to be such by markets. A continued commitment to the policy stance can then help to control the emergence of risk premia,” he said. “Such commitments are needed more than ever,” Bailey, who normally avoids touching on fiscal policy, added in his speech at a conference in Istanbul organised by Turkiye’s central bank. His comments come less than three weeks before finance minister John Healey delivers his first budget which is expected to be constrained by the rise in borrowing costs triggered by the conflict in the Gulf. Bailey said the recent sharp moves in financial markets were “some way from normal” but they were not at the point of being stressed or reflecting illiquidity and overall the economy had been resilient to the energy price shock. Bailey also said central banks had to remain focused on their job of bringing down inflation, echoing comments made earlier by BoE Chief Economist Huw Pill who noted too the backdrop of the financial market upheaval. Bailey has so far voted with the majority of his fellow BoE policymakers to keep borrowing costs on hold, unlike their counterparts at the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve who have responded to the Iran war’s impact on energy prices by raising rates. In his speech, Bailey repeated his view that evidence of any pass-through of higher energy prices to wider inflation in Britain remained “quite subdued” but “it’s early days, and the longer the pattern of higher energy prices persists, the more difficult this situation becomes.”

Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB) has continued its collaboration with Injaz Qatar, marking the third year of the ‘Life Skills Programme’ for preparatory school students in Qatar.The programme will continue to support Grade 7 and Grade 9 students, while also introducing Grade 8 students to practical financial concepts and digital banking through QIB Junior.  The initiative builds on the successful implementation of the programme during the 2025/26 academic year. QIB and INJAZ Qatar reached 25,084 Grade 7 and Grade 9 students across 77 preparatory schools, including 72 public schools and five private schools following the Ministry of Education and Higher Education curriculum. A total of 190 teachers delivered the programmes during the year.  During the previous academic year, an estimated 12,570 Grade 8 students participated in an interactive fintech activity developed with QIB’s support using a demonstration of QIB Junior.  As part of the continued collaboration, Grade 7 students will participate in ‘It’s My Business’, a programme designed to develop entrepreneurial thinking by helping students understand key entrepreneurial characteristics and apply them to developing their own business ideas. Grade 9 students will continue to participate in ‘It’s My Future’, which equips them with practical knowledge to prepare for the world of work, including career planning, personal branding, and the development of soft and technical skills.  Mashaal Abdulaziz al-Derham, assistant general manager, head of Corporate Communications & Quality Assurance at QIB, said: “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Injaz Qatar and build on the positive impact achieved over the past two years.  “By supporting Grade 7-9 students and extending their learning experience, we equip the younger generation with practical life, entrepreneurial and financial skills that will help them make informed decisions and confidently prepare for their future. This initiative reflects QIB’s commitment to youth development and to supporting the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030.”  Emad al-Khaja, CEO of Injaz Qatar, said: “We are delighted to continue our successful collaboration with QIB and build on the positive results achieved during the previous two years. QIB’s continued support enables us to provide students with engaging learning experiences that connect education with entrepreneurship, career readiness and financial awareness. Together, we remain committed to equipping young people in Qatar with the skills and knowledge they need to confidently navigate their future.”  The collaboration forms part of the three-year programme launched by QIB and Injaz Qatar under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Since its launch, the initiative has focused on bridging classroom education with practical skills that prepare students for their academic, professional and financial futures.

BoJ may signal underlying inflation has hit 2% goal

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) may signal this month that underlying inflation has roughly hit its 2% target, three sources familiar with its thinking said, highlighting its readiness to raise interest rates again in the coming months.Any such announcement would largely be symbolic, but it would reinforce dominant market expectations of a December hike and signal the BoJ's readiness to keep raising interest rates in short intervals.The central bank has begun stressing the need to anchor underlying inflation around its target in judging the pace and timing of further interest rate increases.Having just raised rates in September, many in the central bank are cautious about delivering another hike this month and prefer to gauge more data on how past rate increases have affected domestic financial conditions, the sources said.A recent slew of data, such as Tokyo consumer inflation and the central bank's quarterly "tankan" business survey, are likely heightening the BoJ's conviction that underlying inflation has roughly reached its 2% target, the sources said.But the tankan also showed corporate inflation moving sideways and not heightening in a way that requires an immediate policy response, the sources said, taking pressure off the BoJ to deliver a back-to-back rate hike this month."Inflation expectations remain elevated but not flaring up," suggesting that while inflation risks remain, they are not heightening sharply, one of the sources said, a view echoed by another source."All in all, prices are moving in line with the BoJ's projections," suggesting that underlying inflation was now roughly around its target, a third source said. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly.The BoJ raised its key rate to a 31-year high last month, with Governor Kazuo Ueda signalling the central bank has entered a phase focused on preventing underlying inflation from overshooting its target, raising the prospect of tighter policy.The hike followed one in June, leading markets to project the BoJ raising rates at roughly once every quarter.While a renewed slide in the yen could pile pressure on the BoJ to hike rates again in October, receding prospects of a US rate increase this month have taken some pressure off the BoJ to do so, analysts say.Still, the BoJ remains focused on forestalling inflationary risks with another near-term rate hike. In raising rates in September, the governor said underlying inflation, which is the broad, demand-driven price trend that strips away one-off factors, was quite close to 2%.A summary of opinions at the September meeting also showed some members saying underlying inflation was quite close to 2% or would reach that level "in no time."Along with continued rises in wholesale and consumer inflation, steady wage gains and a renewed rise in crude oil prices have heightened prospects for underlying inflation to durably move around the BoJ's target, the sources said.The BoJ will likely point to such factors in signalling that underlying inflation has roughly hit its target in a quarterly report due after its next policy meeting on October 29-30, they said.In the current report released in July, the BoJ said it expects underlying inflation to reach levels consistent with its 2% target sometime between October and March 2028.

Austin Smotherman survived a back-nine double bogey, birdied three of the last five holes and won his maiden PGA Tour title at the Bank of Utah Championship on Sunday in Ivins, Utah.Smotherman entered with a one-stroke lead over Doug Ghim and shot a 3-under- par 68 to go 26-under 258 for the week, a new scoring record at the three- year-old tournament. He defeated Ghim by two shots after the latter posted a final-round 69 at Black Desert Resort."It didn't have to be pretty," an ebullient Smotherman said. "I got some nice bounces. Made some poor swings, but this game doesn't have to be perfect."Smotherman, 32, earned a two-year PGA Tour exemption and entry into the PGA Championship and The Players Championship. He's also projected to rise to No. 51 in the FedEx Cup Fall points standings. Players who finish Nos. 51-60 in the fall standings receive invitations to the first two signature events of 2027.Playing from an awkward lie, Smotherman failed to escape a bunker on his third shot at the par-4 13th hole, and his fourth shot left him 10 feet for bogey, which he could not convert. His three-shot lead shrank to one when he finished the hole.But he bounced back to birdie the short par-4 14th, and after going birdie- bogey at Nos. 16 and 17, he and Ghim arrived at the par-5 finishing hole with Smotherman ahead by two.Ghim had an eagle look in the form of a 31-foot chip that could tie Smotherman for the lead. But Smotherman went first and lagged a 70-foot eagle putt to less than 2 feet from the hole to set up an easy tap-in, and Ghim's chip narrowly missed the cup. SMOTHERNMAN TRUSTED HIMSELFSmotherman said he trusted himself on the 18th to play more conservatively and go for the fat of the green, even though lag putting had been his "nemesis.""A lot of good shots, those drives coming down the stretch as well, just piping it down the middle of the fairway, being committed," he said.Ghim, who was also angling for his first PGA Tour victory and the perks that would come with, gave his playing partner a hearty congratulations on the 18th green.He was asked how fun the battle was for him."Absolutely. It's what we play for, it's what we practice for," Ghim said. "Obviously the money and the points are great, but as a little kid trying to win a PGA Tour event, just a chance to do that is a dream come true. ..."Today was Austin's day. I did everything that I could, and hopefully I'll learn from some of the mistakes and be a little bit more comfortable next time. But always grateful."David Ford (64) and Trace Crowe (66) tied for third at 23 under. Kevin Streelman (67) and Ben James (67) tied for fifth at 22 under.Amateur Kihei Akina, a sophomore at BYU, finished a strong tournament with back-to-back rounds of 65 on the weekend. He finished alone in ninth at 20 under."I'd say go back to my roots from here in Utah, even though I'm from Hawaii, but I went to high school here and now I'm obviously in college here in Utah," Akina said. "I hopefully can set an example for some of the Utah junior golfers out there. I've definitely seen that Utah junior golf is making their way up right now, so it's really cool to see that."

Global factory activity boosted by AI spending boom

Factory activity across Europe and Asia expanded last month as demand, partly boosted by the global AI spending boom, remained strong even as the energy price shock from the Iran war kept inflation elevated, surveys showed on Thursday.Rising inflation pressures across the globe have pushed several central banks, including the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank, to start hiking interest rates, with more increases expected. This has contributed to a sharp selloff in bond markets, pushing up borrowing costs for firms already hit by increased production costs.However, surveys show that, for now, many factories are reaping the benefit of a surge in demand for their products.S&P Global's Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 52.9 in September from 52.7 in August, its highest level since May 2022, partly due to stronger demand for artificial intelligence-related goods.Growth was broad-based across the bloc, with the Netherlands leading the expansion. Germany, the region's largest economy, recorded solid growth while expansion was modest in France, Italy and Spain."The PMIs continue to paint a stronger picture of euro zone industry than the latest data. The sustained strength in surveys points to building underlying momentum over Q3 and to improved industrial support for growth," said Iain Simmons, economist at Oxford Economics."The strength was concentrated in demand for capital goods, specifically AI and defence equipment, while consumer goods demand fell amid price pressure... However, faster cost and selling-price expectations will weigh on the outlook, so we expect the sector’s contribution to be stronger but uneven in Q3," Simmons said.In Asia, manufacturing in major exporters Japan, Republic of Korea and Taiwan also improved last month, benefiting from AI optimism.Korea, in particular, saw factory activity grow in September at the biggest margin in 4 months, as export demand grew at the fastest pace in 15-1/2 years.Taiwan, a key player in the AI field, saw its PMI hit 56.7 in September, up from 54.7 in August. The 50-level divides expansion from contraction."Both new orders and production growth hit the highest for around five-and-a-half years, with anecdotal evidence often linking the expansions to the combined strength of the semiconductor and automotive sectors," said Usamah Bhatti, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, about Korea.On Wednesday, surveys showed that China's factory activity also expanded last month as easing weather disruptions allowed factories to resume operations.Japan's S&P Global PMI declined in September to its weakest in six months as output and new orders slowed, although new export orders rose for a ninth straight month due to robust demand from Asia and improved sales to the US.Still, cost pressures remained elevated with firms continuing to raise selling prices at one of the sharpest rates since late 2022, the Japanese survey showed.India's manufacturing sector expanded at the fastest pace in seven months, reviving hiring and lifting business confidence.Factory activity for other Asian economies was patchy. While Indonesia and Vietnam saw activity expand, the Philippines and Malaysia contracted, surveys showed.
