North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles in two rounds Wednesday, South Korea's military said, after reporting an "unidentified projectile" was launched from the Pyongyang area the previous day.South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has sought to repair ties with the North since taking office last year.On Monday Seoul expressed regret over civilian drone incursions into the North in January, with Lee calling it "irresponsible" and noting that government officials had been involved in the operation.But analysts said the launches, North Korea's fourth and fifth known ballistic missile tests this year, signalled its latest rebuff of Seoul's peace overtures.The South Korean military said early Wednesday it had detected "an unidentified projectile" launched from the area of the North's capital a day earlier.About an hour later, the military said it had also detected "multiple unidentified ballistic missiles" fired on Wednesday morning from North Korea's Wonsan area toward the East Sea, the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.In separate statements, the military said they were short-range ballistic missiles that were fired at around 8:50 am (2350 GMT Tuesday) and flew around 240 kilometres (149 miles).Another — also short-range and ballistic — was launched at around 2:20 pm, flying over 700 kilometres, it said.The Japan Coast Guard also said an "object suspected to be a ballistic missile has been launched from North Korea", urging ships to "remain vigilant".Seoul's Office of National Security at the presidential Blue House held an emergency meeting, asking Pyongyang to immediately stop provocations.After Lee's expression of regret over the drones on Monday, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called it "wise behaviour"."Our government appreciated it as very fortunate and wise behaviour for its own sake," Kim Yo Jong said.But on Tuesday, a senior North Korean official described the South as "the enemy state most hostile" to Pyongyang, reviving a label previously used by Kim Jong-un.Jang Kum-chol, first vice-minister of Pyongyang's foreign ministry, said South Korean media reports that described Kim Yo-jong's comments as an "exceptional friendly response" were "nonsense".Such an interpretation was nothing more than "hope-filled dream reading" by "world-startling fools", he said in a statement carried by Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency.The launches were Pyongyang's message to Seoul that its anti-South stance remains firm despite Seoul's repeated overtures, said Lim Eul-chul, an expert on North Korea at Kyungnam University.Later Wednesday, Pyongyang's state media said China's top diplomat Wang Yi would visit the North on a two-day trip starting Thursday.His visit comes ahead of an expected summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next month.Speculation is mounting over a potential meeting between Trump and Pyongyang's leader Kim at around the same time.Trump, who has repeatedly criticised Seoul's level of support for his war in Iran, has recently boasted of his ties with Kim."South Korea didn't help us" during the Middle East war, Trump said earlier this week."We've got 45,000 soldiers in South Korea to protect (them) from Kim Jong-un, who I get along with very well. He said very nice things about me."The US actually has around 28,500 troops in South Korea.Trump met Kim three times in his first term, but his comment in October that he was "100 percent" open to meeting Kim again have gone unanswered. 

The Saudi Ministry of Defence announced Monday the interception and destruction of five drones.Spokesperson of the Saudi Ministry of Defence, Major General Staff Turki Al Maliki, stated that the five drones were intercepted and destroyed in the past few hours.Earlier today, the Saudi Ministry of Defence announced the detection and interception of five ballistic missiles targeting the Eastern Province.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the ground test of an upgraded rocket engine, state media reported Sunday, marking another key step in its weapons programme.Defence experts believe North Korea is planning to use its solid-fuel rocket engines for launching intercontinental ballistic missiles.The engines enable faster missile launches as they require little preparation before ignition.The latest test was "part of the national defence development plan in the period of the new five-year plan", Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, without elaborating on the date or location of the test.It was the first officially confirmed high-thrust solid-fuel engine test since September last year, when state media said an engine generated a maximum thrust of 1,971 kilonewtons.KCNA reported the recent test had achieved a higher thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons.The development demonstrates North Korea's "resolve to acquire missiles capable of hitting targets around the globe", Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, told AFP."Given the increased maximum thrust, this indicates its intention to possess ICBMs with global strike range, as well as the ability to overwhelm missile defence systems," he added.Photos released by KCNA showed leader Kim Jong-un inspecting what appeared to be part of the engine, flanked by officials.Another image showed flames erupting from a ground-mounted engine, illuminating the surrounding test site in orange light.Kim said that North Korea's defence capabilities had entered "a significant phase of change" in building up its strategic forces.The North has already demonstrated it has mastered the engine technology needed to launch a missile capable of reaching the US mainland with a lower-thrust engine, said Lee Ho-ryung of the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses."They have already passed that mark," she said.The question is no longer whether a missile could reach the US, but whether it could carry multiple warheads, she said.A multi-warhead missile can strike multiple targets with a single launch while overwhelming defence systems through simultaneous, dispersed reentry vehicles."A multi-warhead missile needs higher thrust power because of its heavier weight," she said."In order for the North to show it can launch a multi-warhead ICBM, it needs a test launch to prove its mastery of such technology."Pyongyang last test-fired an ICBM in October 2024.Kim also visited a special forces training base, according to a separate KCNA report, inspecting drills in which photos showed soldiers wielding weapons, including an axe and a sledgehammer.The demonstration "showed the physical and technical ability they have prepared to be a match for a hundred combatants with iron fists", KCNA said. 

The Shura Council convened its weekly routine session in Tamim bin Hamad Hall at the council's headquarters Monday. The session was chaired by His Excellency Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim. As the session began, the council expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli assault that has been targeting the State of Qatar's territory with ballistic missiles and drones since last Saturday.It considered this assault a blatant violation of national sovereignty and a menacing escalation that undermines the security and stability of the region, runs contrary to the principles of good neighbourliness, and contravenes the international rules-based order and the UN Charter. The council commended the efforts undertaken by the Ministries of Defence, Interior, and Foreign Affairs, as well as the nation's authoritative agencies in dealing with the consequences of this attack. It praised the efficiency and high level of combat readiness of the Qatari Armed Forces, and the capability they demonstrated in intercepting a sheer number of repeated missile waves, reflecting a strong degree of professionalism and vigilance in safeguarding the country's security and territorial integrity.Qatar has been undertaking a constructive and responsible role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the international community and has always been committed to sparing the region from escalation risks, moved by its enduring belief in the settlement of conflicts with peaceful means and strengthening regional stability, the council pointed out.The council reiterated its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and the return to the negotiation path to protect the region's security and the interests of its peoples, underlining that the renewed Iranian assault and its violation of the State of Qatar's sovereignty do not reflect good intentions and run contrary to the principles of good neighbourliness.In addition, the council expressed its strong condemnation of the attacks on a number of regional neighbours, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the Republic of Lebanon.The council confirmed its full solidarity with those nations, as well as its backing of everything that would reinforce their security and stability and safeguard their sovereignty and territorial integrity. The council urged the public to adhere to the security and safety measures; to comply with all instructions and guidelines issued by the relevant authorities; and to collect information from official sources, thereby helping promote societal awareness and support the national efforts aimed at protecting the nation's security and stability.Thereupon, HE Secretary-General of the Shura Council, Nayef bin Mohammed al-Mahmoud, read out the session's agenda. The council then discussed the agenda items and took appropriate decisions thereon. It also adopted the minutes of the previous session. 

Ukrainian and Russian officials wrapped up a “productive” first day of new US-brokered talks in Abu Dhabi, Kyiv’s lead ‌negotiator said Wednesday, as fighting in Europe’s biggest conflict since World War Two ‌raged on. The two-day trilateral meetings come after ‍Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had exploited a US-backed energy truce last week to stockpile munitions, attacking Ukraine with a record number of ballistic missiles on Tuesday. “The work was substantive and productive, focused on concrete steps and practical solutions,” Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, ‍wrote on X.Shortly after the talks began, Russian forces struck a crowded market in eastern Ukraine with cluster munitions, killing at least seven people and wounding 15, the Donetsk region’s Governor Vadym Filashkin said. Umerov said he would prepare a report for Zelensky, and talks were expected to continue on Thursday, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. Photographs released earlier in the day by the United Arab Emirates’ foreign ministry showed the three delegations sitting around a U-shaped table, with US officials seated at the centre, ‌including special envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Trump’s administration has pushed both Kyiv and Moscow to find a compromise to end the four-year-old war, but the two sides remain far ‍apart on key points despite several rounds of talks with US ‌officials. The most sensitive issues are Moscow’s demands that Kyiv give up land it still controls and the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, which sits in a Russian-occupied area. Moscow wants Kyiv to pull its troops out of all of the Donetsk region, including a belt of heavily fortified cities regarded as one of Ukraine’s strongest defences, as a precondition for any deal. Ukraine said the conflict should be frozen along the current front line and has rejected any unilateral pullback of its forces. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Russian troops would keep fighting until Kyiv made “decisions” that could bring the war to an end. Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukraine’s national territory, including Crimea and parts of the eastern Donbas region seized before the 2022 invasion. Analysts say Russia ​has gained about 1.5% of Ukrainian territory since ‌early 2024. “Russia is not winning its war against Ukraine,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told online media outlet Liga on Tuesday. He argued that Moscow was paying a heavy price in termsof ‍battlefield casualties and economic harm for small territorial advances. Polls show that the majority of Ukrainians oppose a deal that hands Moscow more land. Kyiv residents told Reuters on Wednesday they were sceptical that the new round of talks would bring any major breakthroughs. “Let’s hope that it will change (something), of course. But I don’t believe it will change anything now,” Serhii, 38, a taxi driver, told Reuters. “We will not give in, and ​they will not give in either.” The first round of talks was held in the UAE last month, marking the first direct public negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed their ties during a video call on Wednesday held in the run-up to the fourth anniversary of Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
