Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim al-Budaiwi delivered a sharp rebuke of Iranian attacks in the Middle East on Wednesday, telling the UN Security Council that the latest wave of ballistic missile and drone strikes has endangered civilian infrastructure across GCC states and Jordan and demanded a firmer international response.The briefing marked the first time a GCC secretary-general addressed the council, underscoring the bloc’s growing role in shaping the regional security agenda.Al-Budaiwi said the strikes had hit airports, oil installations, ports and residential areas, calling them a “flagrant violation” of sovereignty and international law. He argued that attacks on civilians and civilian assets cannot be justified under any circumstances, and said GCC states retain their right to self-defence under the UN Charter.The secretary-general welcomed Security Council Resolution 2817, adopted on 11 March, which condemned the Iranian attacks and demanded their immediate cessation. He urged full implementation of the text to ensure accountability, warning that the council must not allow repeated violations to become normalised.Al-Budaiwi also broadened the warning beyond the region, saying instability in the Gulf has direct consequences for maritime routes, energy supplies and global trade. Security Council reporting on the April agenda noted that the GCC has pressed the council to act on attacks that threaten navigation and the flow of oil, gas, fertilisers and petrochemicals worldwide.Qatar featured prominently in the wider GCC message to the United Nations. On March 12, Qatar’s permanent representative, HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, joined a GCC media stand at the UN backing the draft resolution condemning Iranian attacks and reaffirming Qatar’s right to respond in self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.That message echoed Doha’s continuing diplomatic profile in regional crises. The GCC has also publicly backed Qatar’s mediation efforts on Gaza, including coordination with Egypt and the United States to secure a ceasefire and facilitate aid deliveries.Al-Budaiwi used the council session to cast GCC-UN co-operation as a “new beginning,” highlighting nearly five decades of engagement on peace, security and development. He praised Saudi Arabia’s leadership on the Palestinian file, reaffirmed support for Yemen’s political process under UN auspices, and called for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and Syria’s reconstruction.He said GCC states contributed more than $14bn in humanitarian assistance between 2020 and 2025, and warned that any disruption in the Arabian Gulf immediately reverberates through global markets. “We stand at a crossroads,” he said, framing the choice as one between collective security and the rule of force. 

Qatar has strongly condemned attempts to target Turkiye with a ballistic missile and an airport in Azerbaijan using Iranian drones. In a statement Thursday, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incidents as a "dangerous escalation" and a "blatant violation of state sovereignty", warning that they threaten regional security and stability.  The ministry said the attacks were part of a series of "reckless" actions by Iran, adding that Iran's continued opening of new fronts and expansion of tensions with neighbouring countries represents a serious risk to the stability of the region.  Qatar called on Iran to immediately stop "irresponsible policies that undermine regional security", advising it to prioritise the interests of the region's people and adhere to the principles of good neighbourliness and international law.  The statement also reaffirmed Qatar's full solidarity with Turkiye and Azerbaijan, and its support for measures taken by both countries to safeguard their sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

A ballistic missile launched from Iran and heading towards Turkish airspace via Iraq and Syria was destroyed by Nato air defence systems, Turkish officials said Wednesday.The defence ministry said it had been "engaged and neutralised by Nato air-and-missile defence assets deployed in the eastern Mediterranean".It did not specify the missile's intended target. Iran has been hitting sites across the region in retaliation after the US and Israel launched strikes against it on Saturday.A Turkish official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the missile had been "aimed at a base in Greek Cyprus but veered off course".Officials said fragments that fell in the Dortyol district in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border, had been identified as pieces of the interceptor used to neutralise "the threat in the air".No casualties were reported.The incident drew condemnation from Nato."Nato stands firmly with all allies, including Turkiye, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region," Nato spokeswoman Allison Hart said, using Turkiye's official name."Our deterrence and defence posture remains strong across all domains, including when it comes to air and missile defence."Ankara summoned the Iranian ambassador to convey its "reaction and concerns" over the incident while Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned Tehran against steps that could widen the conflict, a diplomatic source said.Fidan told his Iranian counterpart in a phone call that "any steps that could lead to the spread of conflict should be avoided", the source added.In an evening address, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkiye was "taking all the necessary precautions" in consultation with its Nato allies and was issuing "warnings in the clearest terms to prevent similar incidents from happening again"."If we, as a nation, want to live in peace and tranquility... we must constantly increase our deterrent capabilities. In these difficult times... we are leaving absolutely nothing to chance regarding the security of our borders and airspace," he said.Turkiye, a majority Nato member, shares a 500-kilometre border with Iran.Erdogan has described the US-Israeli strikes on Iran which sparked the conflict as "illegal" and Fidan also criticised Iran's retaliatory strikes against Gulf nations and beyond, saying it was the "wrong strategy"."The underlying strategy seems to be: 'If I am going to sink, I will take the region down with me'," Fidan said in an interview late Tuesday.Analysts said the trajectory of the Iranian missile and its destruction by Nato systems further raised the stakes for a widening regional war, even if there was no clear evidence Iran intended to strike Turkey."Turkiye will not want to become embroiled in the US-Israel attack on Iran, which it has criticised, but if Iran launches more missiles clearly aimed at targets on Turkish territory, Ankara will consider its own direct retaliation," said Hamish Kinnear of risk-intelligence firm Verisk Maplecroft.The defence ministry said: "Any steps necessary to defend our territory and airspace will be taken decisively and without hesitation.""We reserve the right to respond to any hostile actions directed at our country," it added.
