Qatar Foundation (QF) and the University of Granada have announced the winners of the second cycle of the Radwa Ashour Award -- a prestigious accolade recognizing exceptional contributions to Arabic literature. The recipients of this year's award showcase the creativity and depth of contemporary writing in two categories: '40 and Under' and 'Over 40'.The winners of the second cycle of the award are: Aya Mansour from Iraq, honoured in the '40 and Under' category for her work 'Women of the Long River' which is a project built on the oral memory of women concerning the war on Iraq and its occupation, while in the 'Over 40' category, the award was given to Gerges Shokry from Egypt for his work 'About a Poet from Troy' noted for the rewriting of the epic of Troy through a series of poetic texts that adopt a different perspective, embodied in "an unknown, historically marginalized Trojan poet," so as to offer "the wisdom of the vanquished" against the Greek victor's narrative, steeped in hubris.These winners reflect the award's commitment to supporting and celebrating diverse voices within the Arabic literary landscape.Reflecting on his win, Gerges Shokry said: "Winning an award that bears the name of the writer Radwa Ashour is a source of joy. It is not just an award given to a writer, but a prize tied to the production of a creative work, which sets it apart from other awards. Winning the prize for a project a writer proposes also pushes them to complete it with greater enthusiasm - when the committee selected the project 'A Poet from Troy' from among many submitted projects, I became determined to finish it. Likewise, the residency in Granada, with all the city's history in the Arab imagination, will surely be a source of inspiration."Speaking about her experience, writer Aya Mansour said: "My project is dedicated to the stories and testimonies of Iraqi women who lived through decades of war, sanctions, violence, and profound social transformations. This award offers a genuine opportunity for these stories to move beyond the boundaries of private memory and enter the public sphere. I am also convinced that this award will give the book the opportunity to reach new readers and open a broader conversation about what women lived through and the lasting impact those years have had on their lives."Vice-Rector for Outreach, Heritage and Institutional Relations at the University of Granada Margarita Sanchez Romero said: "The Radwa Ashour Award is vital in connecting contemporary Arabic literature with a global audience from the heart of Andalusia. It celebrates the work of writers who embody the spirit of heritage and innovation that Radwa Ashour herself championed, reviving the region's historic role as a bridge between cultures."Project Expert at Qatar Foundation Vice Chairperson's Office Fatima Mohamed Moussa said: "The Radwa Ashour Award exemplifies our commitment to nurturing exceptional literary talent. Recognizing these writers is vital to enhancing the appreciation of Arabic literature on a global scale."The award is part of a partnership between Qatar Foundation and the University of Granada. Through this collaboration, the two institutions are working to strengthen academic and cultural co-operation through initiatives related to the Arabic language and Andalusian heritage. The Radwa Ashour Award is intended to do more than honour individual writers. It seeks to sustain a living literary conversation across borders and provide recipients with the necessary time and environment in Granada to advance their work. Composed of writers, critics, and scholars with extensive engagement in Arab letters, the award's jury is dedicated to recognizing works that embody these principles.The award was launched in 2024 in tribute to the legacy of the late Egyptian novelist, literary critic, and academic Radwa Ashour, commemorating her outstanding contributions to literature. The inaugural edition concluded with the award being jointly given to Lebanese novelist Mohammad Tarazi and and Egyptian writer Nora Nagi.

For journalist and writer Moza al-Ishaq, who received the Visit Qatar Outstanding Service Excellence Award and the Arab Union for Tourist Media Award for her book Creative Qatar Tourism, Qatar's rise as a leading tourism destination is reflected not only in visitor numbers but also in the way the country is increasingly portrayed by international media. She believes Qatar has successfully transformed its global image from an energy producer into a destination recognised for its achievements in tourism, culture and sports. "Qatar has built a unique international identity by balancing authenticity with modernity," al-Ishaq told Gulf Times. "The world's media now view the country as a model for using culture, sports and tourism to strengthen its global standing while preserving its national identity." According to al-Ishaq, this transformation is the result of a long-term national strategy rather than a single global event. While hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 marked a historic milestone, she says international media consistently recognised that the country's success stems from years of investment in infrastructure, education, culture and human capital, all aligned with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. Among the factors most frequently highlighted in international reports are Qatar's world-class infrastructure, including Hamad International Airport, Hamad Port, the Doha Metro and a growing portfolio of luxury hotels and resorts. Its strategic location, placing nearly 80% of the world's population within a six-hour flight, together with simplified visa procedures and world-class aviation connectivity, has further strengthened its appeal as an international destination. Al-Ishaq also points to the diversity of Qatar's tourism offering as a key advantage."Qatar is no longer seen simply as a stopover destination," she says. "It offers a complete experience that combines culture, sports, leisure, business and family tourism, making it attractive to visitors from around the world." The figures support that assessment. According to Qatar Tourism, as reported by Qatar News Agency, the country welcomed more than 1.13 million visitors during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting continued growth and rising international confidence in Qatar's tourism sector. Beyond the statistics, al-Ishaq believes Qatar has successfully employed culture as one of its most effective tools of soft power. Through sustained investment in museums, heritage sites, traditional souqs, and the arts, the country has promoted cultural dialogue while safeguarding its Arab identity. This balance between heritage and innovation, she notes, is frequently highlighted in international media coverage. Sport has been equally influential. International media continue to describe the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as a turning point that showcased not only Qatar's organisational excellence but also an Arab nation's capability to host the world's largest sporting event to the highest international standards. Looking ahead, al-Ishaq believes maintaining this momentum will require continued creativity and innovation. She calls for greater support for tourism entrepreneurs, stronger investment in the knowledge economy, wider recognition of the roles of writers and cultural figures, and more diverse visitor experiences. She also stresses the importance of empowering content creators and cultural ambassadors to communicate Qatar's story to global audiences. "Tourism today is about far more than promoting destinations; it is about telling a nation's story. Qatar has earned worldwide recognition and sustaining that success will depend on continuing to innovate while remaining true to its identity." Al-Ishaq concludes” "Maintaining this momentum requires continuous innovation in the tourism sector, diversifying the experiences Qatar offers to visitors, and further strengthening the knowledge economy. Writers, intellectuals and content creators also have a pivotal role to play in conveying Qatar's authentic story to the world by producing professional, creative content that reflects the country's cultural identity and achievements, extending far beyond simply covering events and activities."

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani honoured the winners of the seventh edition of the State Appreciation Award and the State Incentive Award for outstanding achievements in science, literature and the arts during a ceremony held at the Amiri Diwan Tuesday.  The winners of the State Appreciation Award were Hamad bin Mohsen al-Nuaimi in the field of poetry, Professor Dr Sheikha Asma Ali Jassim al-Thani in biomedical sciences, and Professor Dr Mustafa Aqeel Mahmoud in history.  The State Incentive Award went to Professor Dr Maryam Abdulrahman al-Nuaimi for literary criticism and rhetoric, Shamma Shaheen al-Kuwari for novel writing, Professor Dr Maryam Majid Sultan al-Falasi for education, Dr Yousef Mohammed Yousef al-Horr for civil engineering, Dr Noura Hamad Mohsen Fetais for computer science, Professor Dr Seham Yousif al-Qaradawi for chemistry, Dr Mashaal Nidham Abdulkarim al-Shafie for biomedical sciences, Professor Dr Jassim Abdullah Abbas al-Khayyat for marine sciences, Saad Abdulwahab al-Muhannadi for caricature art, and Professor Dr Ahmed Abdulrahman Hussein al-Emadi for physical education.  HH the Amir praised the winners for their distinguished contributions in their respective fields, commending their role in supporting the nation's development journey and enriching the cultural and intellectual landscape locally and internationally. He wished them continued success and further contributions in service of the nation.  The award recipients expressed their deep appreciation to HH the Amir for the honour, affirming that the awards would serve as a strong motivation to continue contributing to the country's progress and advancement.  The ceremony was attended by Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Khulaifi and Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Thani. 

Al Sadd's Akram Afif, Al Rayyan’s Mahmoud Abunada and Al Rayyan's Roger Guedes with their trophies at the QFA Awards ceremony held at Raffles Hotel Doha Monday. Afif won the Best Player award for the sixth time. Abunada won the Best Goalkeeper award while Guedes clinched the Mansour Muftah Award for being the top scorer (21 goals) in the 2025-26 season.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) announced that oboe player Mohammed Saleh has won the prestigious Bravo International Award. This achievement adds to his artistic repertoire and reflects the presence of Qatari musical talent on the global stage.The Bravo Award is given to honour outstanding achievements in the performing and musical arts. This success is an indication of the growing presence of artists from the region on the global classical scene and their role in promoting cultural exchange through music.The orchestra emphasised that this recognition highlights Mohammed Saleh's contributions to supporting the musical movement and strengthening orchestral traditions in the Gulf region, as well as his role in building bridges between different cultures through art.For his part, Mohammed Saleh expressed his pride in receiving this award, noting that this achievement is the fruit of continuous co-operation and support from his colleagues and the management of the QPO. He affirmed that individual successes are inseparable from collective work.He added that this recognition motivates him to continue developing his artistic performance and to work on inspiring and supporting young talents in the music field, thus contributing to the advancement of the artistic scene both locally and internationally.Saleh is considered one of the most prominent musicians in the orchestra, distinguished by his artistic style and his ability to perform diverse works that combine international classics with modern compositions, which has contributed to his widespread acclaim within international musical circles.

The founder of Esmaani, Hilal Said al-Dhuhli recently received the Akhlaquna Individual Contributions Award for the GCC category from Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation at an event held at the Education City in Doha. The initiative is an Omani volunteer effort and a pioneering programme aimed at empowering individuals who suffer from stuttering—a speech disorder characterised by repetition and interruptions in speech. Along with management of stuttering through specialised training, the programme is also raising awareness about the condition, which affects about 1% of the global population. Al-Dhuhli who leads the efforts at Esmaani said that it has been a long journey for him empowering the people affected by speech disorder. He advocates for a more inclusive society for those who suffer in their day-to-day life due to this impediment. At the award ceremony, al-Dhuhli had said: “We aim to empower people who stutter by offering training programmes that help them overcome speech challenges. We also work to raise awareness about their needs and the importance of their inclusion.” According to al-Dhuhli, the initiative was started early in 2020 with only three volunteering members and since then a large number of participants of various age groups have joined. “It is a transformative organisation dedicated to empowering people who stutter by fostering confidence, communication skills, and inclusive opportunities. We believe that every voice matters and through advocacy, education, and community support, we break down barriers to create a world where stuttering is not a limitation but a unique strength,” he explained. The initiative operates under the auspices of the Omani Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. According to the officials of the organisation, stuttering affects approximately 80mn people globally. “We aim to empower people and equip them to overcome communication barriers, integrate them into society and ensure that their voices are valued. Tutors involved in the initiative have received specialised training abroad such as Training of Trainers certification on stuttering management to provide high-quality programmes,” he noted. With the motto of ‘Empowering Voices, Transforming Lives ‘ the Esmaani initiative is Oman’s first dedicated platform for supporting individuals who stutter. “Our mission is to empower people to achieve their personal and professional goals, fostering confidence and fluency through innovative programmes and community engagement. At Esmani, we strive to create a world where every voice is valued,” Al-Dhuhli said. Through the flagship “Listen to Me” programme, school workshops, and public awareness campaigns, the programme aims to educate society, combat stigma, and provide a supportive network for individuals and their families. In addition to the Akhlaquna Award, the initiative has received significant recognition in the region, including recognition by the Oman Human Rights Commission in 2022. It also qualified for the Beirut Volunteers Award in 2024 and won the Youth Excellence Award in 2025.
