A former Thai MP Monday shot dead a local government official in broad daylight over a financial dispute before being arrested and confessing to journalists at the police station.The attack took place outside a government building in Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok, just days after a school shooting in the same region that raised questions over gun control in Thailand.Flanked by police officers following his arrest, former MP Chalong Riewrang told reporters he had tried to talk to local official Thongchai Yenprasert about money. "I followed him to his car and hit his car's window, saying I want to talk. He said he will not talk, so I pulled my gun," Chalong admitted, handcuff-free and smoking a cigarette. "I did not aim to shoot, but his driver pulled a gun and pointed it at me so I fired."Thongchai, who was chairman of the Nonthaburi local government administration, later died of his wounds, according to a hospital director, Sakon Sukprom. He was hit in the neck and lost a lot of blood, the director said. Thongchai's driver was also shot, wounded in his right arm, but he successfully underwent surgery, Sakon said.Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters that no one in Thailand except on-duty officials was legally allowed to carry a gun in public, noting the last gun-carry licences were issued three years ago and were only valid for one year. Anutin said authorities will pursue "full legal action" against Chalong, a former member of the prime minister's party. "No matter who he is, he is now a murderer," Anutin said.Chalong had confessed to being the sole shooter during the incident, but "both sides had guns", regional police commander Wattana Yeechin told reporters earlier. A firearm was found in Thongchai's vehicle but had not been used, while CCTV footage showed only Chalong firing his weapon from close range, he added.Wattana said the dispute was over several million baht (tens of thousands of dollars). "It was a private issue. According to his confession, it was about money that the... chairman borrowed from him for several years, and he asked for the return of the money several times," he said.Nonthaburi governor Chestha Mosikarat earlier told reporters the suspect and victim were "friends for a long time" and the incident likely stemmed from a misunderstanding.Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the region, with around 10mn firearms estimated to be in circulation -- roughly one for every seven inhabitants.On Friday, a 14-year-old boy shot dead the grandparents who raised him in Nonthaburi before killing six others at his school and then turning the gun on himself. Officials have since promised stricter gun laws, but previous pledges have failed to prevent repeated shootings. 

The Israeli occupation forces arrested 50 Palestinians, most of them former prisoners, during a large-scale campaign of arrests and field investigations in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.In a statement on Thursday, the Palestinian Prisoners Club said that the arrest campaign has continued since dawn today, with arrests and field investigations concentrated in the Ramallah, while the rest of the arrests were distributed across Hebron, Tubas, Tulkarm, Nablus, Jenin, and Jerusalem.The club added that the arrests were accompanied by widespread raids and abuse, attacks against the detainees and their families, as well as widespread acts of sabotage and destruction in the homes of Palestinians.The club pointed out that the occupation has adopted a number of policies in the various areas it raids, and the key to these policies is the systematic field investigation that has affected dozens of families in all governorates.The number of arrests during 2025 reached more than 7,000 in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, in addition to the field investigations that affected thousands, while about 21,000 arrests were recorded since Oct. 7, 2023, without including arrests from Gaza, which are estimated to be in the thousands.

The Israeli occupation forces launched on Sunday a campaign of arrests and raids targeting 13 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. According to the Palestinian News Agency WAFA, the occupation forces arrested seven Palestinians, including a child, from the city of Hebron, and arrested three people from west Salfit, a child and a Palestinian citizen from northwest Ramallah, and another from Balata refugee camp, after raiding and searching their homes. In a related development, Israeli occupation forces closed the iron gate they had installed at the entrance to the village of Atara, north of Ramallah, this morning. This arrest campaign comes as part of the escalating policy pursued by the Israeli occupation in the West Bank, which aims to terrorize Palestinians, restrict their movement, and persecute activists and freed prisoners.

Palestinian civilians in several areas of the occupied West Bank were subjected to injuries, arrests, and assaults carried out by Israeli occupation forces and colonists, in a continuation of systematic measures that deepen the suffering of Palestinians through severe restrictions and relentless control over their daily life. In a statement, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that a 12-year-old child was injured after being run over by an Israeli military vehicle in the city of Jericho and was transferred to hospital for treatment. In Beitunia, west of Ramallah, Israeli occupation forces detained three Palestinians during a raid, according to Palestinian security sources. The same sources added that colonists brutally assaulted another child in the Ein Jariot area near Beitunia, causing him to lose consciousness before he was taken to hospital. Meanwhile, in occupied Jerusalem, Israeli occupation forces stormed the town of Kafr Aqab, north of the city, firing tear gas canisters. No injuries were reported, according to local sources. The West Bank continues to witness heightened tensions due to Israeli settlement expansion and military violations. The situation has escalated sharply since the occupation launched its assault on the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
