Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji said Thursday that Lebanon's objective in the negotiations is to secure a full Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Lebanese territory.Speaking at a conference hosted by the French Senate under the title "Solidarity with Lebanon: Local Authorities at the Heart of the Franco-Lebanese Partnership,” Raji said the negotiations aim to gradually extend the authority of the Lebanese Armed Forces across the entire country, including the south. He stressed that no country can fully establish its institutions and sovereignty while part of its territory remains under occupation.He stated that the occupation weakens state institutions, fuels tensions, delays political and security stability, and prevents the state from exercising full authority over its territory. He added that lasting stability can only be achieved when the state has the sole legitimate authority to use force.Raji said that no state can enjoy full sovereignty while foreign military forces remain on its territory, nor can it achieve full sovereignty unless its legitimate institutions alone exercise public authority and hold the exclusive right to use force.He also called on France to expand its partnership with Lebanon beyond expressions of solidarity by supporting efforts to strengthen state institutions, reinforce stability, and enable the state to fully exercise its authority and responsibilities.Lebanon and the Israeli entity recently held a sixth round of negotiations at the US Embassy in Rome to discuss arrangements for implementing the agreement signed in Washington last June. 

His Excellency Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces Lieutenant General (Pilot) Jassim bin Mohammed al-Mannai participated in the Supreme Military Committee Meeting of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, held in the Kingdom of Bahrain.The meeting discussed ways to strengthen existing cooperation among GCC member states, addressed the latest regional security developments, and explored means of enhancing defence cooperation and joint coordination in light of current circumstances.The meeting was also attended by a number of senior commanders from the Qatar Armed Forces. 

Qatar expressed deep concern over the findings of the United Nations Secretary-General’s report on children and armed conflict, which indicated that violations committed against children in conflict zones have reached unprecedented levels, including killing and maiming, attacks on schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian access.  This came in a statement delivered by Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, during the UN Security Council open debate on children and armed conflict on “Reasserting international legal protections for children in armed conflict: strengthening the protection of education and the prevention of grave violations”, held at United Nations headquarters in New York.  She stressed that Qatar strongly condemns the grave violations committed against children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory by the Israeli occupation, including the widespread use of explosive weapons in populated areas and the ongoing violations in the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in high numbers of children killed and maimed, as well as attacks on schools and hospitals documented in the UN Secretary-General’s report.  HE Sheikha Alya also expressed Qatar’s deep concern regarding the report’s findings on the significant increase in attacks carried out by Israeli settlers and the resulting grave violations against Palestinian children.  She praised the pivotal role played by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict in protecting children in conflict areas, reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to continuing its support and strengthening its fruitful strategic partnership with the office.  HE Sheikha Alya noted that Qatar hosts the Analysis and Outreach Hub of the Office of the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, which continues to play a vital role in supporting international efforts aimed at protecting children affected by armed conflicts, and affirmed that Qatar places the promotion and protection of children’s right to education, particularly in conflict-affected countries, among its key priorities.  She noted that this is clearly reflected in the leading role played by Her Highness the Chairperson of Education Above All Foundation Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, pointing out that Her Highness is among the most influential and prominent figures supporting and protecting quality education at the international level, while the foundation’s initiatives have made a tangible and significant difference in the lives of millions of children around the world.  HE Sheikha Alya also noted Qatar’s anticipation of marking this year the seventh anniversary of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, which was established through a resolution submitted by Qatar to the United Nations General Assembly.  She added that Doha will host an international event on September 9 on “Can Education Survive Attack The Resilience of Human Communities”, aimed at strengthening international efforts to protect education from attacks in conflict areas.

Qatar's Candidate Training Center has graduated the 15th cohort of its Military Science Diploma program for university graduates during a ceremony held under the patronage of HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al-Thani.The event was attended by HE Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces, Lt Gen (Pilot) Jassim bin Mohammed Al Mannai, along with senior military officials.The nine-month program provided candidates with military training, field exercises, awareness lectures and joint exercises with various armed forces units, aimed at developing their combat and leadership capabilities.At the conclusion of the ceremony, HE the Chief of Staff presented graduation certificates to the participants.Among those attending were Major General (Pilot) Salem Abdullah Al Dosari, Deputy Chief of Staff for Education; Major General (Engineer/Air) Adel Hassan Fakhro, Chief of the Education Authority; Brigadier General (Dr.) Mohammed Abdullah Al Henzab, Commander of the Candidate Training Center, and a number of senior officers from the Qatar Armed Forces.

Colombia's Supreme Court on Friday suspended a lower court's decision to ban hard-right presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella from campaigning with national symbols, including his own slogan.De la Espriella, who will face leftist Senator Ivan Cepeda in a June 21 runoff, has campaigned on a pledge to crack down on crime and get tough on the country's myriad armed groups.One court had blocked the wealthy 47-year-old lawyer from using the national football jersey for political gain.Another had prohibited his use of a characteristic military salute, the national flag, his slogan "firm for the homeland" and party name "defenders of the homeland" throughout his campaign, deeming all of them national symbols.But on Friday, the Supreme Court ordered that the second ban be "suspended with immediate effect" while it reviews an appeal filed by the right-wing candidate.De la Espriella had already stated his intention to defy both rulings."They basically want to ban our entire campaign," he posted on X earlier this week.A Bogota judge on Thursday revoked the first ruling related to the jersey, citing an alleged "lack of clarity."Cepeda had accused his hard-right rival of "stealing" and appropriating the garment, just as Brazil's former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro did with his country's kit.Colombia is enduring the worst wave of violence it has seen this decade.While Cepeda wants to pursue dialogue with armed groups, De la Espriella favors a tough crackdown instead. 

Australia will raise defence spending to 3.0% of GDP by 2033 as armed conflicts flare worldwide, Defence Minister Richard Marles said Thursday.The new commitment follows pressure from US President Donald Trump's administration for Canberra to boost military expenditure as a share of total annual economic output."International norms that once constrained the use of force and military coercion continue to erode," Marles said in a speech in Canberra, outlining a boost to spending on missile defence, drones and guided weapon stockpiles."More countries are engaged in conflict today than at any time since the end of World War II, and this is occurring across every region of the world."Australia's defence spending had previously been forecast to rise to 2.3% of GDP by 2033.But the country will spend an additional AU$53bn ($38bn) over the next decade when compared to its 2024 defence strategy, Marles said.In the shorter term, spending would climb by an extra AU$14bn over four years.To reach the 3.0% figure, Australia changed how it calculates the defence budget to match a Nato definition that includes factors such as military pensions and defence intelligence.Marles said Thursday this allowed better comparisons with other countries and put Australia ahead of comparable European and Asian nations with a defence spend this year of 2.8%.But the new spending still falls short of the 3.5% of GDP that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth demanded Australia shell out last year.Wary of China's navy build-up, US ally Australia has reshaped its defence force in recent years to focus on its missile strike capability and deterring an adversary from its northern approaches.It has also embarked on its largest-ever military spending project to build nuclear-powered submarines next decade under the AUKUS agreement with the US and the UK.Marles emphasised Australia would focus in 2026 on building greater military self-reliance but was not jettisoning its US security alliance, which he said remained "fundamental"."There is no effective balance of power in the Indo-Pacific absent the continued presence of the US," he said.Spending to build a missile defence system will accelerate — up to AU$30bn over the next decade.Another AU$36bn will be spent to build guided missiles locally.Australia's vast coastline and small population have also spurred a focus on developing large autonomous submarines and fighter jets, dubbed the Ghost Shark and Ghost Bat.This week, Canberra said it would boost spending on drones by up to AU$5bn in response to shifts in warfare tactics in the Middle East and Ukraine.Under the AUKUS agreement, the US will sell Australia two nuclear-powered submarines from 2032.Australia and Britain will then build a new class of submarine in the 2040s.Critics have alleged the deal does not guarantee that Australia will ever receive the submarines.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani performed the funeral prayer for the martyrs of the nation who passed away while performing their national duty after a Qatar Armed Forces helicopter crash in the country's territorial waters. The prayer was held after Maghrib prayer at Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque in Doha Sunday.Also performing the prayer were His Highness the Personal Representative of the Amir Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani; His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Thani; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Thani; His Excellency Sheikh Jassim bin Khalifa al-Thani; and His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani.It was also attended by His Excellency Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim; a number of Their Excellencies the Sheikhs and Ministers; Turkish ambassador Dr Mustafa Goksu; senior officers and members of the Qatar Armed Forces and the Qatari-Turkish joint forces; and a large number of citizens and residents.HH the Amir participated alongside the families of the martyrs in the funeral procession, and offered his condolences to the martyrs' relatives, seeking Allah's mercy upon the martyrs, to grant them paradise, and to inspire their families with patience and solace.Earlier, the Ministry of Defence disclosed that a military helicopter crashed following a technical malfunction during routine duty, resulting in the martyrdom of all seven personnel on board.The ministry announced in a statement on X that the crash occurred early Sunday, with search and rescue operations launched immediately to locate the crew and passengers. As operations concluded, the seventh and final missing victim, Captain (Pilot) Saeed Nasser Smeikh, a member of the Qatar Armed Forces, was confirmed martyred, bringing the total number of those lost to seven.The six others confirmed martyred earlier were Captain (Pilot) Mubarak Salem Daway al-Marri, Sergeant Fahd Hadi Ghanem al- Khayarin, and Corporal Mohammed Maher Mohammed of the Qatar Armed Forces, as well as Major (Air Defence) Sinan Tastekin, a member of the Qatar-Turkiye Joint Forces, along with civilian collaborators Suleiman Cemra Kahraman and Ismail Anas Can, both Turkish nationals.The Ministry of Interior, in a separate statement posted on its official X account, also confirmed that all bodies had been recovered as search and rescue operations concluded. Specialised teams had conducted intensive operations throughout the day to locate the final missing person.Both ministries extended their deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the families of the martyrs, praying that Almighty God grants them His vast mercy, and gives their families and loved ones patience and solace.  

Qatar has expressed its condolences to the government of Kuwait and its people, on the death of two members of its armed forces while performing their national duties.In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) affirmed Qatar's full solidarity with Kuwait in this tragic loss and its support for all measures taken by Kuwait to preserve its sovereignty and security.  

Chad's government said Monday it was closing the border with Sudan until further notice, following clashes between Chadian soldiers and armed groups involved in the civil war across the frontier."This decision follows repeated incursions and violations committed by the forces involved in the conflict in Sudan on Chadian territory," Communications Minister Mahamat Gassim Cherif said in a statement, adding that he wanted to halt "any risk of the conflict spreading" to his country.Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been fighting government troops for almost three years in a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people.It has forced 11mn people to flee their homes, triggering what the UN says is one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.The paramilitaries have conducted several operations near the Chad border and at least nine Chadian soldiers have been killed in separate incidents since December.The RSF last year consolidated its hold over Sudan's western Darfur region, leaving only enclaves outside its control.It advanced on the frontier again on Saturday, claiming to have captured the border town of Al-Tina before army-allied militias said they had repelled the attack.Many of the town's residents have already fled to Tine on the Chadian side, where tens of thousands of Sudanese have sought safety since the war broke out.Monday's statement said Chad "reserves the right to retaliate against any aggression or violation of the inviolability of its territory and its borders"."Cross-border movements of goods and people are suspended," the text said, adding that "exceptional exemptions" for humanitarian reasons would still be possible. 

Chairman of the Jordanian Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Yousef Ahmed Al Huneiti, on Wednesday held talks with a delegation from the US National Defense University, headed by retired Admiral Kurt Tidd, who is visiting the capital, Amman.The discussions explored ways to enhance cooperation in training and strategic education, in addition to a number of issues of mutual interest.During the meeting, the Jordanian Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff underscored the importance of exchanging expertise and knowledge in military and academic fields. He highlighted the Jordan Armed Forces' commitment to drawing on leading international experiences in strategic planning, crisis management, and national security, in a manner that strengthens the capabilities of its personnel and their ability to address various challenges. 

The Qatar Armed Forces have concluded the Cross-Country Running Championship held at Al Bidda Park in Doha.The event featured participation from 14 teams representing various units of the Qatar Armed Forces, along with teams from the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), the General Directorate of Passports, and the Police College.In the under‑40 category, the Police Academy team secured first place.The Qatar Amiri Air Force team claimed first place in the 40‑to‑50 age group, while the Lekhwiya team took first place in the over‑50 category.At the conclusion of the tournament, Military Sports Federation president Major-General Youssef Dasmal al-Kuwari presented the medals, crowned the winners, and honoured the participant with the highest turnout in the championship.
