Ukraine’s allies gathered in Paris Monday to ramp up support for Kyiv, particularly in air defence, and increase pressure on Russia to end the war, which is well into its fifth year. Representatives of the 37 coalition members, including Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived at Les Invalides in the French capital for the summit of the Coalition of the Willing, launched by France and the United Kingdom to provide military support to Ukraine after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The coalition is expected to announce the first joint exercises of the Multinational Force for Ukraine, to demonstrate its readiness to deploy once the fighting has ended, military sources said. Leaders are also expected to focus on co-operation on air and missile defence with Ukraine, whose air defences have come under strain from repeated Russian ballistic missile strikes in recent weeks. The meeting is “to make sure that the commitment is still there from all nations”, Sweden’s top military commander Michael Claesson told journalists. Before the summit, nine European countries and Ukraine announced the formation of a coalition to develop “purely defensive” anti-ballistic capabilities for Europe, citing a growing threat from such missiles. “We do this not against any people, but in defence of our own,” said the joint declaration by Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. “We are stepping up our support for Ukraine. Strengthening its defences, increasing the pressure on Russia and building the security guarantees of tomorrow,” added French President Emmanuel Macron on X with a photo of assembled attendees. The meetings come the day before France’s national public holiday Bastille Day, which includes a military parade that this year will highlight support for Ukraine. During the traditional speech delivered to the armed forces before Bastille Day, Macron said Europe was “in the process of becoming a power” ready to “defend itself”. “The message we send to the world is this: Yes, peace is our goal. Yes, we cherish freedom and the rule of law. And yes, we stand ready to fight to defend them. Always, and at the cost of blood if necessary,” Macron said. Macron in his speech also called for more European defence industry partnerships, despite France and Germany last month abandoning a joint fighter jet programme. ‘Coalition of warmongers’Moscow Monday dismissed the summit as a gathering of leaders who “do not want peace”. “This is a coalition of warmongers,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. The summit comes at a “powerful moment of renewed transatlantic convergence and unity”, but also of “more favourable developments on the ground” for Kyiv, the Elysee said. 

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) said its air defence systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones launched from Iran on Friday, as regional tensions continued to escalate. In a statement carried by the Emirates News Agency, the UAE Ministry of Defence said the latest attack resulted in three people sustaining moderate injuries. The ministry added that the country's air defences had intercepted 551 ballistic missiles, 29 cruise missiles and 2,263 drones since the beginning of the Iranian attacks on the UAE. According to the statement, the total number of injuries linked to the attacks has now risen to 230, including Emirati nationals as well as Arab and foreign residents. The UAE armed forces said they remained on "full alert" and were prepared to respond to any threats targeting the country’s security and stability. The ministry stressed that the military would respond firmly to any attempt to undermine national security, while ensuring the protection of the country's sovereignty, strategic interests and critical capabilities 

Air defence systems were activated in parts of Tehran Thursday amid reports of hostile aerial activity, Iranian state media said in the first such reports since a ceasefire began.The IRNA state news agency said the "sound of air defence firing" was heard in western Tehran, while the Mehr news agency reported that the systems were activated in several parts of the capital to counter "hostile targets", without elaborating furtherIran flaunted its tightened grip over the Strait of Hormuz Thursday with video of its commandos storming ‌a huge cargo ship, after the collapse of peace talks that Washington had hoped would open the world's most important shipping ​corridor.Iranian state television broadcast footage overnight of masked ‌troops pulling up in a grey speedboat alongside the MSC Francesca, climbing a rope ladder to a shell door ‌in the hull and jumping through ⁠brandishing rifles.The footage, presented with an ‌action-movie-style soundtrack and no commentary, also included views of another ship, ‌the Epaminondas. Iran said it had captured both on Wednesday, accusing them of trying to cross the strait without permits.Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel was waiting for a "green light" from the U.S. to resume the war, saying that if it did, it would begin by targeting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and "return Iran to a dark age"."This ​time the attack will be different and deadly, delivering devastating blows in the most sensitive places," he said in a statement released by his office.With the attacks on hold, attention has shifted to the shipping lanes off the coast of Iran.Tehran says it will not consider opening the Strait of Hormuz, ‌normally the route for a fifth of global ⁠oil and liquefied natural gas, until ​the US lifts its blockade of Iran's shipping, which Washington imposed during the ceasefire and Tehran calls a violation of that ​truce.In a social media post, U.S. President Donald Trump said it was Washington that was in "total control" of the strait, which he described as "'Sealed up Tight,' until such time as Iran is able to make a DEAL!!!".Trump and his military officials have said Iran's navy is "at the bottom of the sea," but Tehran's speedboats show that it can still wreak havoc on shipping.Washington, which has been confronting Iranian ships in international waters to enforce its blockade, said it had boarded another tanker, the Majestic, in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, an apparent reference to a supertanker last reported off the coast of Sri Lanka carrying 2mn barrels of crude.US forces have redirected 33 vessels since the blockade began, the military said Thursday.Iran's judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei said the merchant vessels Iran had seized had "faced the law", while Iranian speedboats and marine drones were sheltering in sea caves off an island keeping the US Navy from approaching.The vice speaker of ‌Iran's parliament, Hamidreza Hajibabaei, said the first revenue from a ‌toll Iran was now collecting from ships using the strait ⁠had been transferred to the central bank. He gave no further details about who had paid it or how much.Pakistan, which hosted talks this month and had been preparing for a second round before it was called off on Tuesday, was ​still in touch with both sides, a Pakistani government source said. Iranian officials were still declining to commit to attend over the U.S. blockade, the source added. 

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced today that Italy will send air defenses to support Gulf states currently under attack from Iran.In a statement, Meloni said, "Italy, like the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, intends to send aid to the Gulf countries".She said the support comes not just because "they are friendly nations but because there are tens of thousands of Italians there", along with "around 2,000 Italian soldiers that must be protect."Meloni revealed that authorizations ​are in place for the United States to use its bases in Italy for operations that do not include bombing, noting that any change to this would require the approval of the government and parliament.

The Ministry of Defence has disclosed the full scale of its military response since the start of Iranian aggression, confirming that its air defence systems have successfully intercepted the vast majority of aerial and missile attacks launched against the country.In a comprehensive tally, the military confirmed the interception of two SU-24 fighter jets, three cruise missiles, 98 out of 101 ballistic missiles, and 24 out of 39 drones. Among the intercepted threats were two ballistic missiles that targeted several areas within Qatar, both of which were neutralised before reaching Qatari territory. The ministry stressed that the threat was identified and engaged immediately upon detection, in line with pre-approved operational plans."Qatar Armed Forces possess full capabilities and resources to safeguard and defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and to respond firmly to any external threat," the ministry said.Separately, Qatar's International Media Office moved to rebuff a Bloomberg report suggesting that the Qatar Armed Forces' inventory of Patriot interceptor missiles had been depleted, calling the claim flatly false.In a pointed statement, the Office said the Patriot stockpile "has not been depleted and remains well-stocked," adding that the Armed Forces "remain at full readiness to protect all citizens, residents, and visitors for as long as necessary." The Office called the publication of such claims without official verification "deeply irresponsible, especially during this fast-moving and highly sensitive period," and said it was reviewing legal options to have the misinformation corrected.On the domestic security front, the Ministry of Interior has been issuing a steady stream of directives urging the public to remain indoors and leave their homes only when absolutely necessary, keeping away from windows and exposed areas. Residents are being told to follow instructions exclusively from official sources and to avoid spreading unverified information.Security agencies, the Ministry of Interior confirmed, are conducting continuous field operations through an integrated command system in close coordination with all relevant authorities, maintaining the highest levels of readiness as the situation continues to evolve. 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday he discussed his country's air defence needs with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb after recent Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Zelenskiy, who is due to meet Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, also said it was important that the U.S. president had managed to stop the war in Gaza. "Of course, the right steps by America could also work to end Russia's war against Ukraine. We have a vision for this," Zelenskiy said, adding that he and Stubb were "coordinating" their positions.
