Qatar University moves research closer to market with four technology licensing deals

Qatar University (QU) is taking research closer to the marketplace at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, unveiling six live demonstrations and licensing four technologies developed by its researchers for applications in marine science and healthcare.The agreements mark a step towards turning university research into commercially viable products, with innovations ranging from artificial reefs designed to help increase fish populations in the Gulf to new healthcare materials and rapid disease detection tools.Speaking to Gulf Times at MWC26 Doha, Prof Aiman Erbad, vice-president for Research and Innovation at QU, said the university was using the international technology event to showcase its research capabilities and strengthen links between academia and industry."This is our second year of participating in this excellent event. This event is a regional platform to present research in AI, telecommunications infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud and edge computing. So this is our platform to show the world what we have," he said.QU is participating with six live demonstrations and six granted intellectual property (IP) rights that are being developed and prepared for commercialisation.A major highlight of its participation is the signing of licensing agreements covering four technologies developed by university researchers. Two of the technologies are related to marine science and were developed at the university's Centre for Environmental Sciences.Erbad said the research had already reached a stage where it could be applied beyond the university, with a company licensing the intellectual property to develop artificial reefs to support marine ecosystems."The centre developed technologies that are now used regionally through this company that is licensing this IP with us to build artificial reefs that will help grow the fish population in the Gulf," he said.The initiative highlights the potential of university research to support environmental sustainability while developing solutions tailored to the region's marine environment.The other two technologies being licensed are related to healthcare and were developed by researchers at Qatar University's College of Health Sciences.One involves developing a material for skin-related applications, which Erbad described as similar to cosmetics, while the other is a rapid detection tool for certain diseases."We have really deep technology that we are licensing to these start-ups, and we are with them working to ensure that these technologies go to the real world, benefit humanity, benefit the region, and bring some funding to the researcher, company and to Qatar University," he said.Beyond the technology demonstrations, the university is also using MWC26 Doha to launch its entrepreneurship, innovation and technology transfer framework, bringing together four entities within the institution to strengthen the journey from research to commercial application.The framework is designed to support researchers and entrepreneurs at different stages, whether through licensing agreements with established companies or by helping turn research into start-ups.Erbad said the university is also hosting an entrepreneurship clinic in collaboration with its College of Business, where students present their start-up ideas alongside researchers showcasing their technologies.The initiative aims to strengthen connections between academic research, business expertise, and potential investors, giving emerging entrepreneurs opportunities to develop their ideas into viable ventures.He noted that the licensing arrangements involved both smaller start-ups and larger companies seeking to benefit from technologies developed at the university.
