Mbappe headlines Zidane's France squad, Pagis gets call-up

Kylian Mbappe headlined the France squad named Friday by coach Zinedine Zidane for their Nations League matches against Italy and Turkey after picking up an injury on international duty in September, while Pablo Pagis was handed a debut call-up.Real Madrid superstar Mbappe, the France captain, scored the winner in Zidane's first match in charge of Les Bleus away to Turkey on September 25, but suffered a knee injury in the same game that ruled him out of the team's three remaining fixtures of the last international window.Without him, France won twice against Belgium, in Brussels and then at home, and drew in between against Italy.Mbappe has since returned to action for his club, scoring eight times in seven matches between La Liga and the Champions League.France are without Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele and Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul for this month's double-header, so Marcus Thuram of Inter Milan is recalled to an attack which will also feature Pagis for the first time.The 23-year-old Pagis, who plays chiefly as an attacking midfielder, is rewarded for his impressive form this season since joining Paris FC -- who are fourth in Ligue 1 -- from Lorient.Pagis is the son of Mickael Pagis, the former Marseille player who at one time appeared for the France beach soccer team coached by Eric Cantona.Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid returns in midfield in place of Manu Kone after missing the last international window, while Manchester United's Leny Yoro and Chelsea's Malo Gusto replace Jules Kounde of Barcelona and Maxence Lacroix of Chelsea in the defence.Zidane's side play Italy in Milan next Thursday, November 12, and then take on Turkey in Bordeaux three days later in their final group-stage fixtures.They are top of Nations League Group A1 with 10 points from four outings, three ahead of Italy.The top two teams in the group will advance to the quarter-finals next March. France squadGoalkeepers: Mike Maignan (AC Milan/ITA), Robin Risser (Lens), Guillaume Restes (Toulouse)Defenders: Andy Diouf (Inter Milan/ITA), Malo Gusto (Chelsea/ENG), Jeremy Jacquet (Liverpool/ENG), Ibrahima Konate (Real Madrid/ESP), Pierre Kalulu (Juventus/ITA), Adrien Truffert (Bournemouth/ENG), Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich/GER), Leny Yoro (Manchester United/ENG)Midfielders: Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid/ESP), Rayan Cherki (Manchester City/ENG), Lucas Da Cunha (Como/ITA), Adrien Rabiot (AC Milan/ITA), Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid/ESP), Warren Zaire-Emery (Paris Saint-Germain)Forwards: Bradley Barcola (Liverpool/ENG), Desire Doue (Paris Saint-Germain), Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid/ESP), Michael Olise (Bayern Munich/GER), Pablo Pagis (Paris FC), Marcus Thuram (Inter Milan/ITA)

Zidane begins France reign unbeaten and brimming with optimism

Belgium’s new boss Van Bommel relishing clash with Zidane

Belgium coach Mark van Bommel is relishing the opportunity to pit his wits against Zinedine Zidane but is disappointed that Kylian Mbappe will be missing when they host France in the Nations League on Monday.Van Bommel got off to a dream start in his first game in charge of Belgium with a 2-0 away win over Italy in their Group A1 game on Friday and said he wants his side to keep up the attacking approach they showed in Rome."I started (my coaching tenure) last Monday by emphasising intensity and willingness to work," he told a press conference on Sunday."The idea has to remain the same. Of course, you have to take the quality of the opponent into account, but that does not change our style of play."If you are beaten in a situation, that's not a problem. As long as everyone knows what they have to do."It will also be a second game in charge for Zidane, whose France debut on Friday was a 1-0 win in Turkey where goalscorer Mbappe was injured."It is special to coach against someone like that," Van Bommel said."He was an exceptional footballer and I played against him once, with Barca (Barcelona) against Real Madrid. If a dribbling move is named after you, then you must have done pretty well. As a coach too, of course. He is a good coach, that's clear. 'IT'S A SHAME THAT MBAPPE ISN'T THERE'"I think it's a shame that Mbappe isn't there, because you always want to have the best footballers playing against you. I don't know exactly what injury he has, but I would have liked him to be there," the Belgium coach added.The France captain has since returned to Real Madrid, who said he had suffered a hyperextension of the left knee.On the eve of his debut as Belgium coach, former Dutch international Van Bommel watched his son Ruben debut for the Netherlands and set up a dramatic last-gasp equaliser against Germany in Amsterdam on Thursday."As a father, you see your son make his debut for the Netherlands, that is already something special," Van Bommel told reporters."We happened to be watching on the phone with a large part of the coaching staff, and then he provides an assist like that. It's fantastic. I would have liked to have been in the stadium. We then also beat Italy. It was two wonderful days."

Mbappe injured as Zidane wins on France debut, Italy lose on Mancini return

Zinedine Zidane's debut as France coach was overshadowed by an injury to captain Kylian Mbappe in a 1-0 win away to Turkey on Friday, while Roberto Mancini's first game back in charge of Italy ended in a 2-0 defeat to Belgium. Zidane, the France legend and member of the team that won the World Cup in 1998, was taking charge of Les Bleus for the first time since being appointed in late July as the successor to Didier Deschamps. Mbappe gave his side the lead nine minutes into the second half in the UEFA Nations League Group A1 clash at the Kocaeli Stadium in Izmit, just over 100 kilometres outside Istanbul.But the Real Madrid superstar injured himself in the process of shooting, and looked to be in clear pain when he came off a few minutes later after initially attempting to carry on."It's not great. Unfortunately I think he's going to have to go home. We don't want to take any risks," Zidane told broadcaster TF1, suggesting that France's all-time record goal-scorer will play no part in the three Nations League matches still to come over the next 10 days. "He overextended his knee while shooting. It's not very encouraging."France held on for the win without their captain, while Turkey finished the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir was sent off late on for handling the ball outside his box as he raced out to deny Bradley Barcola. So it looks set to be without Mbappe that France will head to Brussels for their next game against Belgium on Monday.Belgium, playing their first match since losing to eventual winners Spain in the World Cup quarter-finals, spoiled Mancini's return to the Italian national team by beating their hosts at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.Mika Godts of Paris Saint-Germain ran through to give Belgium a 20th-minute lead, and substitute Dodi Lukebakio fired in from outside the box to double their advantage after the break. - Isak, Gyokeres strike for Sweden - "We need to think positively and not keep banging on all the time about what has happened in the past," Mancini said later when asked if Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup was still hanging over the nation. "In any case we can't change what happened now," added Mancini, who also said that boos by the home fans in the crowd of almost 50,000 were "normal" and "part of the game".Mancini was previously Italy coach between 2018 and 2023 and led them to victory at Euro 2020.Elsewhere on Friday, Shea Charles of Fulham scored the winner deep in stoppage time as Northern Ireland won 1-0 away to Georgia in Group B2.That was after PSG star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had a penalty saved for the home side. Danylo Sikan's goal gave Ukraine a 1-0 victory in Hungary in the same group, with the visitors holding on after having Oleksandr Nazarenko sent off late on.Robert Lewandowski captained Poland in their 0-0 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B4, while Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres both scored as Sweden beat Romania 2-1 in Stockholm in the same section. There were also wins for Armenia and Montenegro in League C.The Nations League action continues on Saturday with England hosting Spain, who are playing their first game since winning the World Cup in July.as/mw

Zidane puts early stamp on France off the pitch before winning start

* Mbappe scores winner in 1-0 away victory over Turkey before apparent knee injury* Zidane first France coach to win first game in charge since Aime Jacquet in 1994* Belgium beat Italy 2-0 as managers Van Bommel and Mancini start new spells   Zinedine Zidane's first week in charge of France ended with a 1-0 Nations League win away to Turkey on Friday thanks to a second-half goal from Kylian Mbappe, but the clearest signs of change came before the match rather than during it.On the training ground and around the squad, Zidane quickly began putting his stamp on a team that had spent 14 years under Didier Deschamps, introducing his own routines, staff structure and tactical ideas while bringing a more hands-on approach.Twenty minutes before his first training session as France coach, Zidane walked onto the pitch at the Clairefontaine national football centre carrying his boots, smiling at the bank of journalists who were waiting for a glimpse of the new era.By the end of the session, the former France playmaker had provided a reminder of the technique that made him one of the finest players of his generation, effortlessly demonstrating drills before feeding passes to players for shooting practice.Zidane also chose the Michel Platini pitch, named after his fellow France great, for that opening session rather than the Pierre Pibarot field more commonly used in the Deschamps era.Initially standing back while goalkeeping coach Fabien Barthez joked with Jean Butez and Guillaume Restes and fired shots at them from close range, Zidane later joined assistant David Bettoni to demonstrate the technical exercises himself.Zidane then supplied passes for the shooting exercises, encouraging and congratulating his players as the hour-long session drew to a close."We were all fans of his when we were young, so it's a pleasure and I'm very happy to be able to learn from him," defender Dayot Upamecano said."We saw that he's still got it, so it's going to be difficult to reproduce what he can do."Defender Maxence Lacroix described training under 54-year-old Zidane as "a great source of pride", while goalkeeper Butez, earning his first call-up, said: "I imagine there couldn't be a better first selection than with a staff like this." PERFECT START FOR VAN BOMMELZidane also began reshaping the team away from the pitch, surrounding himself with a sizeable staff headed by long-time assistant Bettoni and former France team mate Barthez, while placing an emphasis on the history of the national side and links with younger age groups.On the field, France's first match under Zidane, the first France men's coach to win his first game in charge since Aime Jacquet in 1994, was more measured than revolutionary.They beat Turkey 1-0 away in Group A1, with Mbappe scoring the winner in the 54th minute before going off five minutes later with an apparent knee injury.Turkey finished with 10 men after keeper Ugurcan Cakir was sent off three minutes from time for handling the ball outside his area with a diving save.France controlled long spells and showed flashes of the attacking combinations Zidane had worked on during the week, but there was no dramatic tactical overhaul and the performance was built largely on organisation and patience.That left Zidane's early imprint clearest in the details surrounding the team: his presence on the training pitch, the tone of the sessions, changes to the daily routine and the structure he has begun putting around the squad.The first result was positive. The larger transformation, after just one week, remains a work in progress.There will be a lot more work to do for Roberto Mancini, whose second spell in charge of Italy began with a 2-0 home defeat by Belgium, also in Group A1.Mika Godts scored his first international goal after 20 minutes to give Mark van Bommel a winning start as Belgium coach, with Dodi Lukebakio putting the result beyond doubt with a curled shot in the 69th.Northern Ireland earned their first League B victory at the 11th attempt with a 1-0 win in Georgia, Pierce Charles saving Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's second-half penalty before his brother Shea struck in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

France legend Zinedine Zidane on Thursday admitted to feeling "immense emotion" as he prepared to take charge of Les Bleus for the first time in their UEFA Nations League clash with Turkey."I feel even more emotional than I did ahead of my first game as a player. Today I feel immense emotion at being able to be here in charge of France," Zidane said ahead of Friday's Group A1 game at the home of Kocaelispor in northern Turkey.The 54-year-old star of the France team that won the World Cup in 1998 was appointed in July to succeed his former international colleague Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after 14 years at the helm.Zidane was a superstar as a player and remains an icon in his home country, two decades after hanging up his boots. He has since enjoyed success as coach of Real Madrid and there is huge anticipation in France at his appointment."That is entirely logical," Zidane acknowledged. "But the protagonists are the players. I will stick to my job and try to put something in place with the players to get them winning games. That's what interests me."Zidane also revealed that captain Kylian Mbappe was back training normally again after struggling with illness earlier in the week.After the clash with Turkey, Zidane and France face Belgium in Brussels next Monday before a home double-header against Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France at the start of next month.Midfielder Adrien Rabiot believes having the spotlight on Zidane could benefit the players."We know how important he has been for French football. His aura means he takes up a lot of space and people expect a lot from him," said the AC Milan man."He is trying to stay out of the spotlight to allow the players to fully express themselves, and so that people talk as little as possible about him."That is obviously difficult but it's maybe a good thing because talking more about the coach than about certain players could allow them to be left a bit more in peace."

Being managed by Zidane for France is 'like a movie', says Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe says being managed by Zinedine Zidane for the French national team is "like something out of a movie". The pair will work together for the first time during this international break, as Zidane returns to management five years after leaving Real Madrid.Last week Mbappe referred to Zidane as "the player who most embodies the France team", noting that he left an indelible mark on French football. Mbappe is a key figure for the current generation of French footballers, having led Les Bleus to their second World Cup in 2018, and helping them back to the final in 2022. Zidane confirmed last week that Mbappe would continue as France captain.Speaking to Spanish paper AS, Mbappe explained that Zidane was present in his career from his formative years."Yes, years ago (he took me to Real Madrid's training ground)," said Mbappe. "He was the first, to pick me up and take me to Real Madrid, to the training complex. I was 13 or 14, it was ages ago.""And now he’s my national team coach. It’s like something out of a movie, but he's top-level."Zidane replaced his former France teammate Didier Deschamps after the World Cup, ending a 14-year spell in charge for the latter."It’s a new phase with a new coach," said Mbappe. "It’s going to be a new experience for everyone, since we’ve only ever had Deschamps. It will be a change for us, but I think everything will turn out very well."France face Turkey in the Nations League on Friday in Zidane's debut as France manager, before fixtures against Belgium and Italy.
