Elena Rybakina ensured a rise to the world number one ranking for the first time in her career by defeating Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in Wednesday's US Open quarter-finals. The 27-year-old Kazakh star rallied to defeat China's Zheng 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 after two hours and 14 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, ensuring she will replace Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus atop next week's rankings."It's just a number right now," Rybakina said after the match. "Of course I'm in the semis. It's an amazing achievement (but) during the match I feel like I just need to focus on my game."Rybakina advanced to a Thursday semi-final against the later winner between fourth-ranked American Coco Gauff, twice a major champion, and Russian 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva, the fifth-ranked reigning French Open champion from Russia.In becoming the first Kazakh player to reach number one, Rybakina becomes the 30th woman to reach the world number one spot. "It's something for which you're going to be very proud when you finish at the end of the year," Rybakina said. "No matter how long you're going to stay it's an achievement and I feel very proud."Rybakina, who had been 0-6 in prior US Open matches after dropping the first set, seeks her third Grand Slam title after winning at Wimbledon in 2022 and at this year's Australian Open. "It's tough to find words. It was a difficult match... I didn't start that well, I was too much negative," said Rybakina, who had played all of her prior matches at night.  "It has been an early match. In my head I was complaining about the shadow ... I'm glad I pushed all the negative thoughts away. I just kept telling myself: 'Keep fighting'." Rybakina, the second seed, was among four women with a chance to leave Flushing Meadows as world number one, but her victory ended the top spot hopes of Sabalenka, Gauff and third-ranked American Jessica Pegula. Reigning Olympic champion Zheng, 23, missed out on her first US Open semi-final. She lost at the 2024 Australian Open in her only Grand Slam final appearance. "Maybe when she serve second serve, I could be more aggressive sometimes and make a bit less mistake in the return," Zheng said. "Today is just few points makes the difference."Rybakina, who has shown no sign of the foot injury that hindered her US Open preparations, improved to 5-1 all-time over Zheng with her third triumph of the year. Zheng, ranked 121 after missing about eight months due to elbow surgery, went through qualifying and won seven matches in New York, ensuring her a top-60 ranking next week."I got a lot of chances in the third set, but I didn't take them," Zheng said. "That was a bit pity for me to lose this match, but obviously I can take positive things from the US Open this year." Zheng grabbed the first break chances of the match in the eighth game and seized a 5-3 lead when Rybakina netted a forehand.The ninth game was a 14-minute fight with Zheng saving five break points, firing an ace, backhand winner down the line and service winner then taking the others on errant Rybakina backhand service returns.Zheng capitalized on her fourth set point when Rybakina sent a forehand service return long."It was very tough. I didn't start my best," Rybakina said. "I was struggling a little bit. We got into long rallies and I made mistakes. I was trying to be more aggressive because I feel like I wasn't pushing enough."Rybakina began the second set with back-to-back aces and held, then broke Zheng on a forehand winner for a 2-0 lead and saved a break point on a forehand winner in holding to a 4-1 advantage.Rybakina broke with a forehand winner to seize a 5-1 lead and held to force a third set. In the decider, Zheng saved a break point in the fifth game and Rybakina saved one in the eighth game as both players held to 4-4. Zheng surrendered a break with a double fault in the ninth game and Rybakina held for the victory.

Zheng Qinwen pulled off another US Open stunner Monday, beating Iga Swiatek to book a quarter final with Elena Rybakina as men's top seed Alexander Zverev advanced safely to the last eight.It was one more gritty comeback for Zheng, the Paris Olympics gold medallist and a former world number four now ranked 121st after struggling in the wake of elbow surgery last year.Zheng had won the last seven games, saving a match point, as she shocked Madison Keys in her previous match. After falling behind 5-0 in the first set against six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek she again reeled off seven straight games.She then broke Swiatek twice in the second set to clinch the win."I guess to come back from 0-5 (Saturday) is not lucky, that's all I can say," said Zheng, who had to come through qualifying to gain a main draw berth. Zheng, the first qualifier to beat Swiatek at a major, said it took her some time to settle in on the cavernous Ashe court, noting it's been "a long, long time" since she'd been scheduled on a main show court. "I just focus on point by point," Zheng said, adding that she was so focused on the rallies that she lost track of the score.Swiatek, who fell to Zheng in the gold medal match in Paris two years ago, left the Arthur Ashe Stadium in tears, although she later downplayed the upset."You can lose a set from any score, so nothing special about that," she said. Zheng is the first qualifier to reach the US Open women's quarter-finals since Emma Raducanu -- who went on to win the title -- in 2021.She'll next face world number two Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion who cruised past a hurting Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in just 66 minutes.Rybakina is not only chasing a third Grand Slam title. If she beats Zheng to reach the semi-finals she will seize the number one ranking from Aryna Sabalenka -- even if the Belarusian wins a third straight crown. "Of course I want it," Rybakina said. But, she added: "I try to approach the same, fight to the end my next match -- let's see what will happen."Fourth-seeded Coco Gauff reached the quarter-finals for the first time since she won the title in 2023, beating 18-year-old US compatriot Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4.Gauff next faces fifth-seeded French Open champion Mirra Andreeva, a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Anastasia Potapova. Zverev once again closed the action on Ashe, beating 21st-seeded Italian Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).The French Open champion has become a late-night fixture, playing into the small hours in his first three matches, including two five-setters.He was in control against Darderi, saving the lone break point he faced and cruising through the first two sets before Darderi stepped things up to force the third-set tiebreaker.Zverev wrapped it up quickly there, giving himself a match point with a forehand winner to the corner and finished up before midnight with an ace. Zverev will play Botic van de Zandschulp for a place in the semi-finals.The Dutch player saved a match point as he rallied from two sets down to beat France's Arthur Gea 3-6, 6-7 (0/7), 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in a match lasting five hours and 13 minutes.Van de Zandschulp is back in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2021, although he made waves in 2024 with a second-round upset of Carlos Alcaraz.Alexander Blockx's dream debut continued with a gritty 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo, which made the 21-year-old the first Belgian man to reach the US open last eight. Blockx, who started the year ranked outside the top 100, said he was "close to retiring" because of sharp pain in an injured rib in the first set.He next faces Karen Khachanov after the Russian beat 14th-seeded American Learner Tien 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 6-4.

Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen announced Thursday that she was withdrawing from the Australian Open later this month due to a lack of physical conditioning. The Chinese player is a former finalist at the year’s opening Grand Slam, losing to current world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-2 in 2024. Zheng underwent surgery on her elbow following a first round defeat at Wimbledon in July before returning to the WTA Tour in September. However, she pulled out in the third round of the China Open in Beijing after admitting that she had rushed her return to competitive action. “After careful evaluation by my team and following medical advice, unfortunately I will be withdrawing from the 2026 Australian Open,” Zheng wrote on Instagram. “Although my recovery is progressing well and my offseason has gone smoothly, to play a Grand Slam requires players to maintain an extreme competitive condition. “Currently, I have not yet reached my best condition that I have set for myself.” The Australian Open, which begins on January 18, was where Zheng recorded her first Grand Slam victory and also her best Grand Slam result, although last year shewas knocked out in the second round. The 23-year-old had a standout 2024, beating Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 to claim Olympic gold in Paris and also reaching the final of WTA Finals, losing to Coco Gauff in a deciding set tiebreak.
