Lamine Yamal's return sparked Spain's World Cup into life as the European champions ran riot to beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta.Making his first start in two months after a hamstring injury, Yamal ended La Roja's long wait for a World Cup goal just 10 minutes in. Mikel Oyarzabal then struck twice to put Luis de la Fuente's men 3-0 up inside 24 minutes.De la Fuente's careful management of Yamal's minutes continued as the Barcelona superstar was replaced at half-time before Hassan al-Tambakti's own goal rounded off the scoring."We had to recover good feelings, correct a few things from the last game, but we need to keep improving if we want to achieve our target of getting to the final on July 19," said De la Fuente.Victory propels Spain to the top of Group H ahead of Uruguay's meeting with Cape Verde later. Billed as one of the pre-tournament favourites, Spain got off to a slow start in a 0-0 draw against debutants Cape Verde.A pedestrian performance despite dominating possession only highlighted the importance of Yamal to their quest to be world champions for a second time. De la Fuente also warned his players had been "stung" by the criticism they faced following their opening result and they responded emphatically.Yamal's return was one of four changes in total with Pedro Porro, Dani Olmo and Alex Baena also coming into the starting line-up. After over 2,500 passes and 50 attempts at goal since their last World Cup goal, Spain finally found the net and fittingly Yamal made the breakthrough.Oyarzabal found space in behind the Saudi defence and his low cross picked out the 18-year-old to slot in at the back post. The Saudis held Uruguay 1-1 in their opening game but there was little evidence that the billions splashed to raise the level of their domestic league has aided the national team.Coach Georgios Donis looked particularly irked that two of Spain's goals came from corners. Oyarzabal pounced on Aymeric Laporte's flick-on to give the 2010 winners the breathing space they craved. Just three minutes later, the Real Sociedad forward volleyed home from Olmo's header for his 14th international goal in his last 13 caps.Oyarzabal was inches away from a first-half hat-trick when his audacious effort with the outside of his foot from a narrow angle came back off the crossbar. But with the job done by half-time, De la Fuente could afford the luxury of replacing Yamal and Oyarzabal at the break."Had we had a different result, he (Yamal) would've played for longer but given the result and that the match was under control, we considered his contribution was enough for us to have him in the next game," added De la Fuente.The changes did not disrupt the waves of Spanish attack towards the Saudi goal, but the fourth also came via a corner. Cucurella was afforded acres of space to shoot and although his effort was repelled by Mohammed al-Owais, the rebound deflected in off the unfortunate Tambakti.To round off an ideal afternoon for De la Fuente on his 65th birthday, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino were afforded valuable minutes off the bench in the second period as they too get up to match speed after lengthy absences due to injury.By contrast, the pressure is now on Donis to deliver in Saudi Arabia's final group game against Cape Verde in Houston. Victory will likely take the Arabian Falcons into the knockout stages for the first time since the World Cup was last in the United States 32 years ago.Spain travel to Guadalajara next for the final group game against two-time winners Uruguay on Friday. 

 Spanish national team star Lamine Yamal admitted he had been "afraid" of missing the World Cup because of the hamstring injury he is still recovering from.The 18-year-old suffered the injury as he scored a penalty for Barcelona against Celta Vigo on April 22. "Internally I was praying it was nothing, that it was just cramp or something like that, because the World Cup was very close and I knew that a hamstring injury is never a short-term thing," said the winger to the Spanish football federation's own media outlet."I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn't serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup."Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is hopeful he will have him available for La Roja's opening game at the World Cup against Cape Verde on June 15.On Sunday, the player warmed up with his team-mates in Spain's first training session before heading to work in the gym. "It's also true that it helps knowing you're going to play a World Cup, so mentally it's like you haven't played a single game all season, and I'm really eager to make my debut (at the tournament)," he added.Yamal, who starred as Spain won Euro 2024 in Germany, said the World Cup is the "biggest thing" in football and he has dreamt "a thousand times" about lifting the trophy.If Yamal does not make the first match he is expected to play some part against Saudi Arabia in the second on June 21, and Uruguay on June 27 in the other Group H fixtures.

Lamine Yamal set up two goals and scored another as Barcelona took a significant step towards defending their La Liga title with a 4-1 derby win over Espanyol Saturday. Ferran Torres netted twice with Yamal and Marcus Rashford finding the net late on as the Catalans moved nine points clear of second-placed rivals Real Madrid. Los Blancos drew 1-1 against Girona on Friday and with seven games remaining, one of which is a Clasico at Camp Nou in May, Hansi Flick’s side have a commanding lead. Barca face Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League quarter-finals, aiming to fight back from a 2-0 first-leg defeat, but the coach still picked a strong side against Espanyol. Midfielder Pedri Gonzalez and 18-year-old winger Yamal played the full match as Flick tried not to let the second leg disrupt the team’s league campaign. After a strong start to the season Espanyol were beaten at home by Barca in the first game of 2026 and have failed to win a match since. They offered little resistance as Hansi Flick’s side cruised into a two-goal lead. Yamal created both goals for Torres, whipping in a corner which the Spain international nodded home for his first goal since January. Although some wondered if Flick would rest Yamal for Tuesday’s visit to face Atletico, the teenager is always keen to play and Barca fans adore watching him. Yamal’s assist for the second was sumptuous, playing Torres through with the outside of his boot and the striker’s shot trickled past Marko Dmitrovic and into the net. Espanyol came close when Tyrhys Dolan’s chipped effort clipped the top of the crossbar but they were mainly pinned back in their own territory. Yamal curled a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar and Dmitrovic made a good double save to keep Fermin Lopez and Eric Garcia at bay. Barcelona thought they had extended their lead early in the second half when Torres stabbed home Garcia’s goal-bound header but it was ruled out for a tight offside against the defender. Espanyol pulled one back through Pol Lozano immediately afterwards with a rasping effort after Barca struggled to clear the ball. Substitute Rashford could have got a third for Barca but the England international seemed to lack confidence as he delayed his shot before firing straight at Dmitrovic. The winger missed several chances against Atletico in the first leg of the Champions League tie, but by the end he found the net and will look to make further amends at the Metropolitano. Yamal notched the third in the 87th minute by charging down a loose ball, which rebounded beyond Dmitrovic, leaving him with a tap-in. Two minutes later Rashford hooked home the fourth with a volley from Frenkie de Jong’s cross, with the Dutch midfielder on as a substitute for his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in February. 

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said he would defend teenage star Lamine Yamal against criticism for his occasional "emotional" outbursts, ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid.The 18-year-old winger did not celebrate Barca's late winner in the 2-1 victory at Atletico in La Liga on Saturday that took the Catalans seven points clear at the top of the table.Yamal was visibly irritated, with Spanish media reporting it was because a member of the Barcelona coaching staff admonished him from the sidelines for shooting when he could have passed.The Spain international has also shown his anger at being substituted by Flick in the past, and the coach said he would back Yamal regardless."What we have to see is that Lamine is 18 years old and for me he's an unbelievable player, you can see it when you watch the game again - what he's doing is unbelievable," Flick told reporters Tuesday."But he's only 18, sometimes he's angry when I substitute him. He had a situation, where he dribbled past four or five players and then shot and missed."Sometimes he's frustrated he didn't score this goal and he's like that, he's emotional, and this is good. I will always support him."Flick admitted Yamal's shows of disapproval on the sideline sometimes create headlines that are not ideal for the team."He's a fantastic player, on the right (path), we will help him to develop," the German coach said."Not everything that he's doing is good as it creates this noise around our team. I know everyone is looking to him because he's a fantastic player but we also have to see that he's 18 years old."Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I said to him, no problem you can do it and I will always protect you. This is what I want for him, show everyone one the pitch how good he is and he will be one of the best, maybe the best player in the future."'Fantastic' RashfordYamal shone last season as he helped Barca to the Champions League semi-finals, as close as they have come to the trophy since winning it in 2015.Flick said the quarter-final tie against Diego Simeone's Atletico would be tricky to navigate, starting at Camp Nou on Wednesday in the first leg."Atleti is a tough team, they have the right attitude, a lot of intensity, fast players, fantastic players on the pitch," said Flick."On Saturday they rested many players but the quality was very high. they love to defend, they know how to defend in a deep block, it's not so easy to score two goals at Atletico. It's always tough."There will be a lot of emotions in this game because it's two legs, we try to give our best to get a good result tomorrow."Marcus Rashford is in line to start on the left flank in place of injured winger Raphinha.The England international, on loan from Manchester United, scored against Atletico on Saturday.Flick said he still needed to improve on his defensive work rate but acknowledged Rashford was doing well, although he has not said if he wants the club to execute the purchase option they have for the forward."(Pressing) is also a part of our game which is very important, not just with the ball (where) everyone knows he's fantastic," said Flick."(Dribbling) one on one he's doing really good, but to defend is also part of our game and part of football."But he's doing good, he's adapted a lot, and we need him... to help his team-mate on the flank." 

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal will be driven to greater heights after being beaten to the Ballon d'Or by Ousmane Dembele, the club's coach Hansi Flick said.The 18-year-old winger finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain attacker Dembele at the glitzy gala in Paris on Monday in the battle to be crowned the world's best player, but won the Kopa Trophy for best young player. "I spoke with him yesterday, and I think he sees it (in the) right (way), so it's for him also motivation for the next years," Flick told a news conference."Dembele, he deserved it also, it's a vote and a lot of things can happen and I think he accepted this in a good way, and he's motivated to show it this season. Maybe next season he also will be an option for the Ballon d'Or, but I really appreciate that a lot of players from our team are in this situation, and it's great for our team. It shows a lot how your last season was, and this is also our goal for this season."Yamal starred as Barcelona won a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The winger is set to miss Thursday's clash at Real Oviedo with a groin issue as the champions try to keep pace with La Liga leaders Real Madrid, who beat Levante on Tuesday to move five points clear of Barca.Last season the Catalans struggled in games without the teenager but they thrashed Valencia and Getafe without him in their previous two games. "I'm really happy, I never think about which player we are missing, I only focus on the team we have," said Flick. "Which players are the options for being in the starting XI... I'm happy with my team. It makes no difference, every starting XI can win matches. It's not a big problem."Midfielder Gavi is out for the next four to five months after undergoing knee surgery on Tuesday. The 21-year-old missed nearly a year after a knee ligament tear in November 2023. "We have to take care of him, we have to go step by step, because he is 21 years old and he has a huge career in the next 10 to 15 years," said Flick."He's a player with a big, big heart, he's a player with a lot of emotion, he's a player who lives... I wouldn't say dies, for this club, but he's like this and I'm really happy to have him on my team.
