India said yesterday it would be “a challenge” to face a “quality” Pakistan team in Colombo after Islamabad U-turned and decided to play the blockbuster T20 World Cup clash. The Pakistan government late Monday ended a week-long stand-off by rescinding its order for the cricket team to boycott the February 15 match. “It’s great that the game is back on, we kind of never changed the preparation,” said India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. India will face a second Group A match against Namibia tomorrow in New Delhi before flying to Sri Lanka. It means a quick turnaround for Sunday’s match, the biggest and most lucrative clash in world cricket. “It’s going to be a challenge going to Colombo where Pakistan have been for the last two weeks,” added Ten Doeschate. “We are delighted to have another chance to play against a quality side in the first phase of the tournament. “We are fully focused on just bringing our best game to that fixture.” Pakistan’s decision to go ahead with the match was hailed yesterday as an outbreak of “good sense” and “good for cricket”. A frantic weekend of negotiations saw International Cricket Council (ICC) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chiefs fly to Lahore on Sunday for talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The governments of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka both wrote to the Islamabad government on Monday urging it to change its stance and allow the game to go ahead. After “multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15”, the Islamabad government said on its official X account late Monday night. The decision had been taken with the aim of “protecting the spirit of cricket”, it added. Former India cricketer Madan Lal told AFP yesterday that it was “good for cricket”. “We want strong teams to play so that the charm of the World Cup is not lost,” he added. Sri Lanka, who will host the match which generates multi-millions of dollars in advertising, broadcast rights, sponsorship and tourism, also praised the decision. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in a social media post, thanked Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for “ensuring the game we all love goes on”. Veteran Indian journalist Pradeep Magazine told AFP “good sense has prevailed on all sides”. Financial considerations would have been taken into account, he added. “Everyone realised that losing the revenue from an India-Pakistan match would have been a loss-loss situation for all ICC member nations.” The 20-team tournament has been overshadowed by an acrimonious political build-up. Bangladesh, who refused to play in India citing security concerns, were replaced by Scotland. As a protest, the Pakistan government ordered the team not to face co-hosts India in the Group A fixture. Pakistan, who edged out Netherlands in the tournament opener on Saturday, would have conceded two points if they had forfeited the match. Pakistan will play all their T20 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka as part of an International Cricket Council deal that ensures the two nations only meet on neutral territory. India captain Suryakumar Yadav said on Friday before their opening win against the USA that his team would travel to Colombo for the clash, whether the game was on or not. “We haven’t said no to playing them,” Suryakumar said. “Our flights are booked and we are going to Colombo.”

Qatar will face Ireland in an international friendly at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on May 28 as part of Al Annabi’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico in June and July. Qatar have been drawn in Group B alongside Canada, Switzerland and one European playoff winner. In the latest FIFA rankings released in January, Qatar are ranked 56th, while Ireland sit 59th. The two sides have met twice before during the European qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Their first meeting in Debrecen, Hungary, in March 2021 ended in a 1-1 draw, while the return fixture in Dublin saw Ireland claim a 4-0 victory. As part of their ongoing preparations, Al Annabi will also play friendlies against Argentina and Serbia during an international Qatar Football Festival in Doha from March 26 to 31, which will feature six World Cup-qualified teams. The Aviva Stadium, a multi-purpose venue with a capacity of 51,700, is the official home of the Ireland national team.

New Zealand’s openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen rewrote ‌the Twenty20 World Cup record books Tuesday, pummelling the ‌United Arab Emirates’ bowling attack ‍in a stunning 10-wicket victory in Chennai. The duo chased down UAE’s competitive target of 174 with more than four overs to spare, their unbeaten partnership of 175 eclipsing the record for the highest stand for any ‍wicket at the men’s T20 World Cup. “I didn’t know that. Not much of a stats guy, but we’ll take it,” Seifert said after picking up his second player of the match award. Seifert finished unbeaten on 89 and Allen 84 as New Zealand romped home in just 15.2 overs to top Group D with a display of power-hitting that left the UAE bowlers ‌shell-shocked. New Zealand raced to 78-0 in the opening powerplay, with Seifert and Allen dispatching the ball to all corners of the ground. Although spinner Haider Ali managed to stem the flow ‍with just eight runs from his first two ‌overs, fast bowlers Muhammad Rohid and Junaid Siddique had no such luck as the openers attacked them when they bowled length deliveries. Seifert reached his half-century in 23 balls – his second fifty of the tournament after his 65 against Afghanistan – and Allen matched him stride for stride as the pair guided New Zealand to the finish line. The demolition job was completed in emphatic fashion when Seifert smashed a six down the ground. Earlier, UAE captain Muhammad Waseem had given his team hope with an unbeaten 66 after winning the toss. Despite losing opener Aryansh Sharma ​early when he skied a short ‌Jacob Duffy delivery to long leg, Waseem and Alishan Sharafu rebuilt with a 107-run partnership off 77 balls. The pair scored runs to all ‍corners of the ground, especially behind the wicket when they used the bowlers’ pace to clear the infield and find the boundary. “Red soil tends to play a lot better. They played some good shots, I’m not going to lie. They used the pace nicely,” New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner said. Sharafu made 55 before falling to ​a spectacular boundary catch, where Mark Chapman leapt into the air and caught the ball but as he fell over the boundary he quickly tossed it into the hands of Glenn Phillips. Waseem reached his fifty in 37 balls and Phillips conceded 27 runs in the 18th over, but New Zealand stemmed the flow of runs with three wickets at the death to restrict UAE to 173-6. “We were short 15-20 runs. We need to step up as a bowling team,” Waseem said. “We did not execute our plan well, we need to do that in the upcoming games.” BRIEF SCORESNew Zealand 175 for 0 (Seifert 89*, Allen 84*) beat United Arab Emirates 173 for 6 (Waseem 66, Sharafu 55, Henry 2-37) by ten wickets 

Pakistan has agreed to play India in the Twenty20 cricket World Cup match scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka ‌on Sunday, Pakistan’s government said Monday, reversing ‌its decision to boycott ‍the game citing geopolitical tensions.The Pakistani government last week directed its team to boycott the Group A contest to show solidarity with Bangladesh, who were replaced in the tournament ‍by Scotland after their refusal to tour India over safety concerns.“In view of the outcomes achieved in multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its ‌scheduled fixture in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” the government said in a post on X.The Bangladesh Cricket Board Monday urged ‍Pakistan to reverse their decision to boycott ‌the match. Pakistan also received communications from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other member nations urging it to help in securing a resolution to the impasse, the government said in the statement.Pakistan, who are scheduled to play all their matches in Sri Lanka, would have forfeited two points if they had withdrawn from the match and also dealt a serious blow to the tournament since an India-Pakistan clash remains cricket’s greatest blockbuster. Indian captain Suryakumar ​Yadav said last week that ‌his team would travel to Colombo as planned, regardless of Pakistan’s decision on the fixture. New Delhi’s ties with ‍both Islamabad and Dhaka have deteriorated in recent months, with political strains increasingly spilling into cricket. India engaged in its worst conflict with Pakistan in decades in May. Ties with Bangladesh soured after then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to Delhi in 2024 after ​violent protests against her government. Bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan has long been suspended but an arrangement is in place enabling them to play at a neutral venue when either hosts a global tournament. India, the world’s top-ranked T20 team, are aiming to become the first side to successfully defend the title and the first hosts to win the tournament.‘All the pressure’ on Pakistan against USA in second WC clashUSA leg-spinner Mohammad Mohsin said Monday that “the pressure will be on Pakistan” when the teams lock horns in the T20 World Cup again, two years after the Americans inflicted a shock defeat on the former champions.But Pakistan quick bowler Salman Mirza insisted the stunning super over defeat in Dallas in the 2024 T20 World Cup would be firmly “in the past” when the two clash in Colombo Tuesday.The USA team gave tournament favourites India a big scare in their opening match in Mumbai, reducing them to 77-6 at one point, with Mohsin taking a wicket on his T20 World Cup debut, before losing by 29 runs. They are confident they can repeat their stunning upset of two years ago in the Group A encounter.“The pressure of losing the last game will be on Pakistan,” said Mohsin. Born and brought up playing cricket in Pakistan, Mohsin migrated to the US five years ago and warned the USA were a better team now than two years ago.“I have played with most of the players in this Pakistan team, so I have given my input to the team and we are a more skilled and confident team.”Mirza was confident the last defeat will not prey on the Pakistan players’ minds.“Winning and losing are part of the game, it happens in cricket,” Mirza said. “The defeat against the USA is now past and behind us.”Mirza admitted the smaller teams were dangerous opponents.“Until now all the matches are close and no team is small or big in this format,” said Mirza, who took 3-24 against the Netherlands. Pakistan may bring back experienced batsman Fakhar Zaman to replace Babar Azam who has been criticised for slow scoring.
