HE Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Vice Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, participated in the Women in Basketball Forum, hosted by FIBA, in the German capital Berlin on Friday, bringing together leading figures, decision-makers and representatives from the sports, media and business sectors. Al-Buenain took part in a panel discussion titled “Beyond the Game: Building a Legacy for the Next Generation,” which explored future opportunities for basketball, ways to expand opportunities for women and girls in sport, and the role Qatar’s hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 can play in supporting the development of the game and creating a sustainable legacy in Qatar and across the region. During the session, al-Buenain stressed that hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 represents an opportunity that goes beyond staging a major global sporting event, contributing to the growth of the game, encouraging future generations to take up basketball and broadening participation in Qatar and across the region. He said: “Qatar 2027 is not about proving that Qatar can host another major sporting event; Qatar has already demonstrated that, repeatedly, over the past two decades. The real opportunity now is to show what happens when world-class infrastructure, experience and innovation come together, and stay together, long enough to become a lasting, mainstream legacy for basketball, for this region, and for the next generation.” He also stressed that the true measure of the tournament’s success goes beyond the event itself to what it leaves behind once the final buzzer sounds. He highlighted the importance of building on Qatar’s world-class infrastructure, experience and capabilities, and leveraging the hosting of the tournament to support the long-term development of basketball, broaden opportunities for participation, and establish a lasting legacy for the game in Qatar, across the region and for future generations. The Women in Basketball Forum explores the opportunities shaping the future of women’s basketball through a series of sessions and discussions addressing key drivers of growth across the sports ecosystem, including investment, leadership, media, fan engagement and commercial innovation, while highlighting the growing role of women’s basketball in shaping the future of sport.

Chinese teenage basketball player Zhang Ziyu stands 223cm (7ft 4in) and towers over opponents at the Women's World Cup -- but off the court she's "just a little girl".That was the assessment of the giant 19-year-old by team-mate Han Xu after China's 74-70 overtime win over the Czech Republic on Sunday in Germany.The teenage centre scored three points in just over 10 minutes on court against a physical Czech side, having been more of a threat against reigning champions the United States in a 94-61 loss to start the tournament.After that defeat, USA superstar Caitlin Clark had warm words for Zhang, saying: "I've never played against a woman of that size and she obviously presented some challenges for us."I think she's a wonderful player and you see how young she is."You can tell she's still growing and learning how to play and how to leverage her advantage, which is her size."There's not much you can do to stop her when she gets it really close to the basket."Zhang's height is listed at 223cm on the website of world governing body FIBA, making her already taller than NBA great Shaquille O'Neal, and even in a sport where height matters, she stands out in women's basketball. ZHANG MIGHT BE DESTINED FOR WNBAZhang might be destined for the WNBA, but Clark and Han warned against placing too many expectations on the teenager."In life she's just a little girl," said Han, who top-scored for China with 22 points against the Czechs."I always want to give her good energy... she can finish to the rim and protect the paint."I think she is a great player and we just keep thinking (about) how to use her better and hope she can be more aggressive."The official website for the Women's Basketball World Cup describes Zhang as "epically tall", noting she first came to international prominence when she was crowned MVP at the U18 Women's Asia Cup two years ago.Footage and images of Zhang looming over her opponents have gone viral online, but Clark said there was more to her than just that."She's still a very young player, but to be this young and to be in a World Cup and to go up against the top players is only going to help her continue to grow," said Clark."So I think if she continues to develop, then there's definitely a place for her." 

England paceman Jofra Archer believes he is now in a "good place" after a succession of career-threatening injuries but said there had been some benefits from lengthy spells on the sidelines.Barbados-born Archer arrived in the UK in 2015 and four years later he was the spearhead of England's attack in their dramatic World Cup final triumph at Lord's, as well as starring in the 2019 Ashes.But he started to develop an elbow problem later that year, with England captain Joe Root widely criticised for over-bowling the Sussex quick in New Zealand.Elbow and back injuries sidelined Archer from Test duty for more than four years, from February 2021 to July 2025.But the 31-year-old, who plays in all international formats, said there were some positives from his enforced absences."The time when I was injured, I really got away from cricket," he told the BBC on Monday. "It's all been a blur. I didn't realise how long the time out was, either."I got to spend some time at home (in Barbados), because, moving over (to the UK), I never really got more than a couple of weeks. To spend a month here and there, it was really nice."He added: "I'd be lying if I didn't say I had a good time away from everything. Now, everything is really nice. My body is in a good place, the team is in a good place and everyone is in a good place. I just want to play cricket."Archer is aiming to help England complete a 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan at Edgbaston this week after featuring in crushing wins over the tourists in the first two Tests, at Headingley and Lord's.The express bowler has been part of an impressive pace attack also featuring Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson that has started to draw comparisons with the celebrated "Fab Four" of Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff, who helped England win the 2005 Ashes. 

Former India captain Suryakumar Yadav said he was disappointed at being dropped from the national T20 side months after leading India to a successful defence of their men's T20 World Cup title. The 35-year-old took charge in 2024, guiding India to 42 wins in 50 completed T20 internationals and helping them become the first team to retain the men's T20 World Cup crown. The final victory over New Zealand in March was his last T20 appearance for India and he was replaced as captain by Shreyas Iyer. "The guy they've picked, I have played a lot of cricket with him. I know he's a good player, good human being, good captain also," Suryakumar said on Aakash Chopra's YouTube show. "So, I didn't resent the decision but was disappointed because we didn't lose a series for two years, won Asia Cup, T20 World Cup - you want the same thing to go forward. When everything is going well, then why the change?" India lost their first T20 series to Ireland in June and were thrashed 4-0 by England under Iyer, with a 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe their lone series win since lifting the World Cup. Suryakumar scored only 242 runs in nine World Cup matches at an average of 30.25 after struggling in the lead-up to the tournament. He managed only 270 runs for Mumbai Indians in this year's Indian Premier League. "For one-and-a-half months I kept thinking, how can this happen? How is it possible? We just won the World Cup. Yes, IPL wasn't as good as how I wanted," he said. India are due to play three one-day internationals and five T20 matches against West Indies from September 27, with the squad yet to be announced.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes and several Argentina team-mates have received bans and fines for their part in clashes with Spain players at the World Cup final, FIFA said on Friday. In the strongest punishment handed down by world football's governing body, Paredes was banned for 10 international games and fined $90,000.He grabbed Eric Garcia by the throat and wrestled Spain's Gavi to the ground while holding his substitute's bib, which led to an escalation in the incidents on the field after the final that Spain won 1-0 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.Paredes' teammate Nahuel Molina received a seven-match ban and must also pay a fine of $90,000, while Thiago Almada was suspended for one match and fined $30,000. Roberto Ayala, a member of Argentina's coaching team, was given a three-match suspension and a fine of $30,000.Gavi was banned for a match and also fined $30,000 for his role in the fracas that erupted after holders Argentina were defeated thanks to Ferran Torres' goal in extra time.Argentina have also been ordered to play their next two home matches with capacity reduced to 50 percent, though one match of that sanction is suspended.Additionally, the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 for breaches of FIFA's disciplinary code relating to using a sports event for making demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by its supporters.After Lionel Messi's Argentina beat England 2-1 in a tense World Cup semi-final, several Argentina players held up a banner saying: "The Falklands are Argentine". Argentine forces invaded the British overseas territory in the southwest Atlantic Ocean in 1982, which resulted in then-British prime minister Margaret Thatcher sending a naval task force to reclaim them.The resulting conflict, which lasted for 74 days from April to June 1982, led to the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen. Three people from the islands also died. The AFA said it would appeal the suspensions and fines. The AFA said in a statement it would "request from FIFA the grounds for the rulings that are subject to review in order to file appeals before the Appeals Committee".FIFA had appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents after the final whistle.

* FIFA chief Infantino's senior adviser quits in protest* FIFA to proceed with consultation over stake sale* World governing body says it is not 'selling football'* FIFA says it will not create subsidiary without majority support* AFC backs UEFA, CONCACAF opposition to plan  A senior adviser to FIFA President Gianni Infantino quit on Friday in protest at plans to sell ‌a stake in the World Cup as European football threatened a boycott and regional confederations united in opposition to the proposal.Carlos Cordeiro ​resigned with immediate effect, calling the plan "a bad deal ‌for football".Cordeiro, who was appointed in 2021 by Infantino to help shape FIFA's future, said the body was "mortgaging football's future without ‌any compelling justification."It is a bad ⁠deal for FIFA's Member Associations, a ‌bad deal for football, and a bad deal for the long-term future ‌of the game," Cordeiro said in a statement.A former banker and ex-U.S. Soccer Federation vice president, Cordeiro added that he had no involvement in the proposal ⁠and opposed it "unequivocally".Meanwhile, FIFA's Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour said staff were "deceived" by Infantino, describing the proposal as a "project of one person"."Our mission ... is to serve football. Not to serve the personal interests of a person who, unfortunately, believes he embodies FIFA when he is supposed to be at its service," he wrote in a statement shared with the Associated Press.FIFA TO PROCEEDDespite the mounting opposition, Switzerland-based FIFA said "incorrect media reports" this week had disrupted its planned consultation process but that it would press on with putting the proposal in front of its 211 national football associations."We will proceed with this consultation process to ensure that each MA (Member Association) has the ability to express its vote based on facts," it said in a statement issued in ​the middle of the European night.FIFA has proposed creating a $20-billion subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to run the World Cup and its other events, with a stake of up to 20% to be offered to external investors.Thrive Eternal, a fund run by Thrive Capital, founded by Joshua Kushner, was expected to lead the proposed investor group, FIFA said. Joshua is ‌the brother of Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's ⁠son-in-law.Trump, however, said he did not ​speak with Infantino about FIFA offering stakes to external investors despite having a close relationship after the U.S. co-hosted the World ​Cup.British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who was critical of FIFA's plan when it was announced earlier this week, told reporters on Friday that Infantino was "the wrong man to lead the organisation".Infantino, 56, is up for re-election next year and North American football chief Victor Montagliani is reportedly looking to challenge him for the FIFA presidency.UEFA LEADS OPPOSITION TO FIFA PLANEuropean soccer's governing body, UEFA, has led the widespread opposition to the proposal, accusing FIFA of putting the sport's "soul" up for sale.On Thursday, UEFA's 55 member nations voted unanimously to boycott all FIFA tournaments, less than two weeks after Spain were crowned world champions.FIFA's next major event is the women's Under-20 World Cup in September. Hosts Poland said on Friday they had not received any information about the potential withdrawal of any team from the tournament."Nobody is selling football. This is not something FIFA would ever entertain," FIFA said in Friday's statement."Everyone has the right to express their opposition and to seek further clarification but no single entity can claim to represent all 211 MAs (Member Associations) ‌around the world."Each MA should be allowed to review the ‌proposal and have a say in shaping their own future. ⁠These are the democratic principles of FIFA."CONCACAF, the regional federation for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, rejected the proposal during a meeting on Thursday but ⁠the 41-member body did not follow UEFA with a boycott threat.The Asian ⁠Football Confederation, which has 47 members, issued a statement on Friday saying it "stands in solidarity" with UEFA and CONCACAF, but also stopped short of threatening a boycott.The AFC, which has not historically been as frequent or vehement a critic of FIFA as its European counterpart UEFA, questioned the viability of the proposal and raised doubts about FIFA's decision-making processes in a thinly veiled attack on Infantino.Stuart Dykes, the director of European and Institutional Affairs at Football Supporters Europe, said such decisions could not be taken behind closed doors by a small group of people."The national associations should be demanding proper governance, proper consultation, proper stakeholder involvement," Dykes told Reuters."Football ​is not for sale. It's a social good. Its value is created by the fans and the players ... That value is not for FIFA to extract in the interest of private investors."FIFA SAYS PROCESS IS A DEMOCRATIC ONEInfantino said in a letter to all member associations that they would receive $40 million each if they agreed to FIFA's proposal by September 19.On Friday, FIFA said it would not go ahead with the plan without the support of the majority of its member associations."These principles underpin the FFE proposal: unprecedented development funding, truly global ownership of the commercial opportunities of our sport, and full self-determination through a democratic process for all MAs," FIFA said.UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC combined have 143 associations, well over half of FIFA's 211 members.However, not all individual member nations would be certain to follow their federation's line.The Czech FA's President David Trunda told Sky Sports he could see the "positive impact of FIFA's intentions", but it has ‌since rejected the proposal while endorsing UEFA's ​stance.The Mexican Football Federation said it would study the proposal before deciding its position, despite CONCACAF's rejection.
