Van Aert wins Vuelta stage 13, Mas retains red jersey

Belgian Wout van Aert won his first Vuelta a Espana stage of the year when the Visma-Lease a Bike rider beat Valentin Paret-Peintre in a two-man race to the finish line in stage 13 on Friday.Points classification leader Van Aert launched a decisive attack with about four kilometres to go, with Paret-Peintre on his wheel. Soudal Quick-Step's Paret-Peintre tried to move ahead in the last 200 metres but Van Aert pushed past the Frenchman to claim victory.Red jersey holder Enric Mas did not challenge for the stage and spent most of the 192.8-km ride from Almunecar to Loja in the peloton. He finished three minutes later with the bunch, retaining a lead of one minute and 45 seconds over Primoz Roglic, who remained second overall."It was, I think, a very difficult stage to control... we kept attacking and the final attack worked," said the 31-year-old Van Aert, a three-time cyclo-cross world champion, who won the Tour de France points classification in 2022.The medium-mountainous stage, one of the longest in the race, saw attacks from the start. RIDERS JOSTLE FOR POSITIONSAs riders jostled for position, Gregor Muehlberger, who was ninth overall, crashed during a climb. The Austrian Decathlon CMA CGM rider, who has been setting the pace for teammate Felix Gall's pursuit of the red jersey, got back up and continued but was later forced to abandon the race.About an hour into the stage, a large group broke away from the peloton, and Van Aert was part of it from the start.The Belgian looked to pull ahead with just over 20 km remaining but Vincenzo Albanese helped to keep the green jersey holder in check.Van Aert waited for his opportunity and clinched victory with another attack near the end."It was close enough to the finish to be worth it and with Valentin I had a nice companion... it was nice to battle to the line together," Van Aert added.Van Aert's teammate and three-time stage winner Matthew Brennan reached the finish line 24 seconds later to claim third place.A mountainous 152.7-km ride from Jaen to Sierra de la Pandera will test the riders on Saturday.

Briton Brennan triumphs in Vuelta stage 11, Mas retains red

Briton Matthew Brennan prevailed in a chaotic sprint for the finish line in stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday, as the 21-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider claimed his third stage win in his maiden Grand Tour.Brennan, who also won the second and fourth stages, beat Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) in a photo finish in Lorca.Red jersey holder Enric Mas (Movistar) retained his overall lead, remaining a minute and 18 seconds ahead of four-times winner Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) as nearly the entire peloton crossed the finish line together after the 153.8-km ride from Cartagena.Points classification leader Wout van Aert expertly led teammate Brennan to the front after the final turn and he overtook Coquard and crossed the finish line with his hand raised in victory."We took the initiative again today... it was fantastic work in the last 10 km to keep us in the right place," said Brennan, who won Britain's National Under-23 Championships last year. 'A TEAM FULL OF MASSIVE CHAMPIONS'"I'm with a team full of massive champions... I'm thankful that they go full gas for me."UAE Team Emirates-XRG, whose leader Tadej Pogacar withdrew from the race after a crash in stage eight, could have lost another rider when Kevin Vermaerke went down in a crash with Hamish McKenzie (Jayco AlUla).American Vermaerke got back up, however, and carried on as the peloton shut down all the early attacks, reaching speeds of nearly 46 km per hour going into the last 10 kilometres of the mostly flat stage.The peloton was together amid a frantic battle to stay ahead in the final kilometre, but the Visma-Lease a Bike riders successfully collaborated to set up Brennan's dash to the finish line.The race returns to the mountains on Thursday with a 166.6-km ride from Vera to Calar Alto.

Vingegaard makes his move, conquers Blockhaus to win Giro stage seven

Pre-race favourite Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) proved his Giro d'Italia credentials by going alone to conquer the Blockhaus summit finish and win stage seven on Friday in his ‌first telling move of the race to move second overall.Dane Vingegaard, making his Giro ‌debut, went for broke with just over 5 km ‌to the top, with Austrian ‌Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) looking ‌impressive as the only rider to get close, coming in 13 seconds behind the winner and now third in the GC."Today is a big day for me, it's my first Giro stage win, so it's a nice day," Vingegaard said. "Felix is a very strong rider, so we knew he'd be up there close. He's a big rival and so he is a guy we have to worry about."Australian Jai Hindley, who triumphed at Blockhaus in 2022 before going on to win that year's Giro, finished third on the longest stage of this ‌year's race, 244 km from Formia ending with the 13.6 km steep climb to the line.Overall leader, Portugal's Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious), put in a brave ride, coming home less than three minutes after Vingegaard to hold onto the pink jersey, with the Dane three minutes and 17 seconds behind.Vingegaard, aiming to become the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours, began the day 15th in the general classification, over six minutes down on Eulalio, and the first summit finish was always going to be a target for the Dane.An early five-man ‌breakaway, including sprint specialist ‌Jonathan Milan, was allowed to build a significant gap over the peloton, and the Italian was caught with 80 km left, his job done having taken maximum points at the intermediate sprint.With 60 km to go, the gap to the front was six minutes but the reduced bunch upped the pace and were less than three minutes behind when the leaders hit the start of the final climb.Two riders, Nickolas Zukowsky and Jardi Christiaan van der Lee, tried to stay away but resistance was futile as Visma-Lease a Bike pushed their way up in support of Vingegaard.Giulio Pellizzari was the only one to keep pace when Vingegaard went in front but the Italian was soon dropped and it was Gall who powered to the finish.Gall is 17 seconds behind Vingegaard overall and could prove to be the ‌Dane's biggest danger.Saturday's stage eight is a 156-km ride from Chieti to Fermo.
