Ancelotti hails Vinicius as Brazil march on at World Cup

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti hailed Vinicius Junior as "one of the best players in the world" after the Real Madrid forward continued his excellent World Cup form with a brace in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Scotland.Vinicius scored twice in the first half in Miami, including a header, to set Brazil on their way to a victory which allowed them to progress to the last 32 as winners of Group C."I had no doubts about how he would be coming into this World Cup," said Ancelotti of the 25-year-old, who has four goals in three games at this year's tournament."For him it is an honour to play for the national team. He is playing well and he even scored a header, which is very rare for him."I knew all about what Vini could do. He is one of the best players in the world," added Ancelotti, who managed the forward for four years at Real Madrid.Vinicius scored in Brazil’s opening 1-1 draw with Morocco and then also netted in the 3-0 defeat of Haiti.He is level with France's Kylian Mbappe and Norway's Erling Haaland in the golden boot race, with that trio all one behind Lionel Messi. He is the first Brazilian to score in all three group matches at a World Cup since Ronaldo and Rivaldo both achieved the feat in 2002.The only other Brazilian players to find the net in all three group games are Jairzinho, in 1970, and Romario in 1994 - that is illustrious company to keep, and Brazil went on to lift the trophy every time one of their players did that in the past."I always say I am not that bothered about numbers. I am not used to scoring so many goals, but the coach has moved me into a position to which I have adapted well, and now I am scoring and helping the team," Vinicius told Brazilian broadcaster CazeTV.Vinicius, who came second in the Ballon d'Or in 2024, netted 22 goals in 53 games in all competitions for Real last season."Hopefully I can keep going to the final. I am very happy with the work being done by the team. If everyone is playing well, the ball will arrive in attacking areas and we will have chances to score goals," he added. 'The passion of a kid'Matheus Cunha got Brazil's other goal against Scotland, before the Manchester United player was replaced by Neymar for his first appearance for his country since October 2023."He deserved to come on. He has worked hard and trained hard to recover fitness. He has done it very professionally," Ancelotti said of Brazil's all-time top scorer."He has the quality to help the team at this World Cup and he played well in the few minutes he was on."He needs no motivation to play for Brazil, none of the players do. He is 34 but he has the same passion for playing football as a kid."Brazil now go to Houston for a last-32 tie next Monday against the runners-up in Group F -- either the Netherlands, Japan or Sweden."Compared to the first game we are making fewer errors, playing with more rhythm, and we are more clinical up front," added Ancelotti."In the two games since Morocco we have left a good impression. The objective was to finish first, and now we just need to keep working and getting better for the next game."Now we are really playing as a team, and that was of the aim. We are not perfect; we have things to improve on."But I am very happy because we have got better already and we are solid now. It's really important to be solid in the knockout rounds."

Vinicius apologises for storming off in Real's Clasico victory over Barcelona

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr issued a public apology after his angry reaction to being substituted during Sunday's heated 2-1 El Clasico victory over Barcelona had him storm straight to the changing rooms. The Brazilian was withdrawn in the 71st minute and replaced by compatriot Rodrygo, despite having played a key part in the winning goal and running Barcelona's right back Jules Kounde ragged during the fiery encounter.Vinicius made his displeasure known to manager Xabi Alonso before heading directly to the dressing room, casting a shadow over what should have been a celebratory moment as Real ended a four-game losing streak against their bitter rivals. While Vinicius revealed he had personally apologised to his teammates and club president Florentino Perez, notably absent from his statement was any mention of Alonso. "Today I want to apologise to all Real Madrid fans for my reaction when I was substituted in El Clasico," Vinicius said via his social media accounts. "As I have already done in person during today's training session, I also want to apologise again to my teammates, the club and the president."The 25-year-old attributed his outburst to his competitive drive, explaining: "Sometimes my passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team. My competitive nature stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents."Vinicius has had a testy relationship with Alonso since he took over as manager in May. Alonso has substituted him in most games this season even though Vinicius has been linking up well with forward Kylian Mbappe. But even after storming off the pitch, his part in a testy match was not over. He reemerged just before the final whistle after Pedri was sent off and a fight broke out between the teams. He had to be shepherded away from the scene as he argued with Barca players.Real have 27 points at the top of the La Liga standings, five ahead of Barcelona in second.

Mbappe and Vinicius shine as Real Madrid dispatch Levante

Real Madrid maintained their flawless start to the season with a swashbuckling 4-1 victory over Levante on Tuesday, as Vinicius Jr orchestrated the first-half demolition before Kylian Mbappe's second-half brace sealed a comprehensive win.The result keeps Real Madrid comfortably atop the standings on 18 points after six matches, stretching their lead to five points over reigning champions Barcelona, who have a game in hand ahead of Thursday's clash at Real Oviedo. Levante languish in 16th place on four points. It was a particularly satisfying night for Vinicius Jr, who was under scrutiny after a mixed start under new manager Xabi Alonso. Before Tuesday, he was yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Real Madrid at the start of the season and started on the bench on two occasions. But he produced an excellent performance against Levante and was rewarded by playing the full game and finished the match wearing the captain's armband. Vinicius Jr set the tone with a moment of brilliance in the 28th minute, unleashing a strike from the right side of the box using the outside of his right boot that went in just inside the far post. The Brazilian turned provider 11 minutes later, threading Franco Mastantuono through down the right channel in a lightning-fast counter-attack. The youngster burst into the box and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner from close range to double Madrid's advantage.Real could have entered the break with an even more commanding lead had it not been for Levante's Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, who produced crucial saves to deny efforts from Vinicius, Federico Valverde and Mbappe in the opening 45 minutes.Levante briefly threatened a comeback when Ivan Romero's 54th-minute effort deflected off Dean Huijsen and lobbed over the wrong-footed Thibaut Courtois, allowing Etta Eyong to head home the loose ball at the far post. However, Mbappe restored Madrid's two-goal cushion nine minutes later, converting from the penalty spot with a cheeky chip down the middle after Levante captain Unai Elgezabal fouled him in the box, as Ryan dived helplessly to his left. The French forward completed his brace three minutes later, collecting Arda Guler's long pass through the middle before rounding the goalkeeper and tapping into an empty net. Real Madrid face a stern test away at city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday, while Levante play Getafe in the Spanish capital on the same day."Vinicius has played a decisive and very important role tonight," coach Alonso told a press conference. "We are in a phase of growth, of construction. We are in the beginning of the season and there is still a long way to go. We are still building a solid foundation to be competitive in the Champions League, LaLiga and the Copa del Rey."I see the players feeling energised and connected, which is important. There are still things to improve, things we can do better, but we are on the right track."
