Serena and Venus Williams electrified Arthur Ashe Stadium but fell to Chan Hao-ching and Maya Joint in three thrilling sets in their return to the US Open women's doubles on Friday.The superstar sisters, whose 14 Grand Slam doubles titles include two US Opens, rallied from a break down in the third set and led the deciding 10-point tiebreaker 5-0 but fell 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (10/7). Venus, 46, and Serena, 44, hadn't played Grand Slam doubles since the 2022 US Open and last won a title together at Roland Garros in 2018.They showed flashes of their brilliant best, Serena proving particularly dangerous patrolling the net but struggling with her serve.After recovering from losing the first set to level the match in the second-set tiebreaker.They belted no fewer than 20 winners in the set, holding serve throughout and leveled the match when Joint smacked an overhead long to roars from the crowd.Chan and Joint regrouped to seize a 4-2 lead in the third. The sisters rallied, but get to the finish line as Taiwan's Chan and Joint fought back superbly to clinch the victory.For Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion considered by many to be tennis's greatest women's player, it was her first return to the courts of Flushing Meadows since then.The 44-year-old had returned to major singles play as a Wimbledon wild card four years after "evolving away" from the game. At the All-England club she lost to Joint in a Centre Court clash that captured the imagination of both diehard and casual tennis fans. Even that experience didn't prepare Joint for the atmosphere on the cavernous Ashe Stadium. The sisters received a thunderous ovation when they took court, all business in understated white outfits. Every blistering volley and overhead smash from the Americans received raucous cheers, and when they sprinted to the lead in the decisive 10-point tiebreaker the noise was deafening "The atmosphere was surreal," Joint said. "Being able to play aginst such legends of the game is super special."bb/rcw

Venus Williams is relishing the "very special" opportunity to reunite with her sister Serena in the Wimbledon doubles.A decade on from winning the last of their six Wimbledon doubles titles together, the American siblings will be back on court at the All England Club next week.After receiving a wild card following Serena's sensational return from four years in retirement, the pair will take on Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the first round."It's very special indeed. We have had quite a history here and it's nice to be back in 2026, so ready to go," Venus told reporters on Saturday.Venus, 46, plays only intermittently on the WTA Tour in the twilight of her career, while Serena, 44, is taking tentative steps in her unexpected comeback.It seemed they had played together for the last time when Serena retired following the 2022 US Open, saying she was "evolving away" from tennis.But, motivated by a desire to play in front of her two young daughters, Serena is back on the circuit, playing doubles at Queen's Club with Victoria Mboko and Karolina Muchova in the Berlin Open.She will also play singles at Wimbledon for the first time since her US Open farewell. 'EXCITED WE'RE PLAYING TOGETHER'"I'm excited we're playing together and I can't wait until we hit the courts," Venus said."As soon as she wanted to play doubles and we were playing doubles, that's how it works."Venus won five Wimbledon singles titles between 2000 and 2008, while Serena has lifted the trophy seven times at the All England Club.Serena will take on Australian world number 53 Maya Joint in the first round as she bids for a 24th Grand Slam singles title and first since the 2017 Australian Open.Doubts remain about how well Serena will be able to compete in singles after so long away from the top level.Asked about Serena's current performance, Venus defiantly said: "Can you walk over to the courts and watch her play? That's probably your best bet."There is no doubt that she has nothing to prove, at all."  

Seven-time major singles champion Venus Williams said Sunday she's still driven to play good tennis - and "it gives you great legs" - as she prepares for an Australian Open tilt at age 45.Williams will become the oldest woman to play in the main draw at the season-opening Grand Slam after accepting a wildcard, five years after she last competed in Melbourne.The American said she was unaware of the record she was poised to break, adding she didn't have the same intense approach to achieving milestones as in her prime.However, her drive to succeed on court remained."I think one of my goals is to be joyful and just embrace being uncomfortable because that's the things champions can do," she said."I definitely don't wake up and come halfway across the world -- or more than halfway -- to not be feeling the fire."And, well, tennis burns a lot of calories. It gives you great legs. I figure if I want to stay fit, I've got to keep playing."A five-time Wimbledon champion, Williams was an Australian Open singles finalist in 2003 and 2017 and won the doubles title four times alongside sister Serena.Williams' last tournament was the US Open in August, not long after returning from a 16-month break.She will play warmup events in Auckland next week and Hobart ahead of the January 18-February 1 Australian Open and hoped she can shake rust out of her system."It's interesting because I have so much experience, but I've probably played the least amount as any other player in this draw," Williams told reporters in Auckland."So I have a lot to pull out but I also have to come out of the gates playing quickly."The good news is that, you know, tennis matches are long and you have a chance to figure things out."Her first opponent in Auckland on Monday will be Polish fifth seed and world No.54 Magda Linette.
