Lebanese President Gen. Joseph Aoun stressed that extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is the primary choice to safeguard stability and strengthen the nation's role and military.Speaking before a Lebanese parliamentary delegation that clamors for this extension, Aoun stressed that having UNIFIL in the south is significant for numerous factors, highlighting that the mission would help reinforce stability for residents in villages and towns in lockstep with the military.Countenancing this extension as a primary option, Aoun added that should this extension never happen, the second option would be pursuing a model that ensures the continued presence of international forces in the south within the required legal framework.What matters most is to have coordination between the military and those forces, Aoun underlined, suggesting that this would support stability and enable the forces to carry out the missions UNIFIL has been vested with.Aoun further noted that Israel repudiates the presence of UNIFIL forces and has been pressing in this direction for a year.He noted that Lebanon has been calling for their deployment to make a breakthrough that ensures the constant international presence in the south, whether through an extension or alternative international forces, to preserve stability and boost the state and military role in this respect. 

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced the death of one peacekeeper and the serious injury of another following a projectile explosion at one of its positions near Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon."We do ​not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation ⁠to determine all of the circumstances", UNIFIL said in a statement.UNIFIL reiterated its call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that could endanger peacekeepers.UNIFIL emphasized that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.
