Hubert Hurkacz capped his injury comeback and earned United Cup redemption as he inspired Poland to a first title with a 2-1 victory in the final against Switzerland in Sydney Sunday.Switzerland took a shock early lead when Belinda Bencic stunned world number two Iga Swiatek 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the opening singles of the mixed teams event.Playing his first tournament in seven months following knee surgery, 28-year-old Hurkacz withstood a Stan Wawrinka fightback to prevail 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and send it to a deciding doubles.Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski then completed a famous victory by beating Bencic and Jakub Paul 6-4, 6-3 to erase the heartbreak of Poland losing in the final in 2024 and 2025."Finally, we made it! Third time lucky!" Swiatek said during the trophy ceremony."I really felt it was a team effort this year."Hubi, what a comeback after so many months. You played amazing. You inspired us all with determination."Our doubles team, wow! You just beat everyone. It was amazing."Hurkacz fired 18 aces against the 40-year-old Wawrinka to erase two heartbreaking near misses in the last two United Cup finals.In 2024, Hurkacz squandered two championship points before falling to Germany's Alexander Zverev. The USA's Taylor Fritz denied him in a third-set tie-break last year."He's definitely an inspiration," Hurkacz said of Wawrinka, who is playing his final season on tour before retirement."I was growing up watching him play, compete and win so much. Obviously his game style is really powerful."The shots that he can pull off sometimes, you can really admire them even when you are on the other side of the net."Bencic won 12 of the final 15 games against a shell-shocked Swiatek, earning her second victory over the world number two."To be honest, I felt I was in the match from the very first point," said Bencic, who won all five of her singles matches in the tournament."I thought I was going great and I was 0-3 down. I was 'OK, what do I have to do?'"I think I just tried to keep the level and just wait for some chances."With the title on the line, Zielinski partnered Kawa to victory over the Swiss pair who had been unbeaten in the tournament, scuppering Bencic's attempt at a perfect 10-0 record in singles and doubles."This moment is so bittersweet," Bencic said, adding Switzerland had nothing to be disappointed about."We can be so proud of ourselves and we really deserve to celebrate this. It was truly one of the best weeks of my life." 

Poland exacted revenge for their loss to the United States in last year's final, beating the defending champions in their last-four tie at the United Cup to set up a title clash with Switzerland, who beat ‌Belgium in their semi-final Saturday.Hubert Hurkacz stunned world number nine Taylor Fritz in ‌the men's singles to give Poland ‍the lead, before Coco Gauff beat Iga Swiatek to level the tie. But Poland prevailed in the mixed doubles decider, where ⁠Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski beat Gauff ⁠and Christian Harrison.Hurkacz, ranked 83rd in the world, avenged his loss to Fritz in last year's final ‍in a 7-6(1) 7-6(2) win, after taking the lead in both tiebreaks with well-placed backhand passing shots to beat his second top-10 ranked opponent this week."Definitely pleasantly surprised... in seven months, (this is) my first tournament. So coming back from such a long period the first time in my life, you never know what to expect," said Hurkacz, who also beatworld number three Alexander Zverev on Monday when he returned from an injury layoff.World number four Gauff got the U.S. back in the ‌game, beating Swiatek 6-4 6-2, as the American's powerful shots forced the world number two to stay near the baseline and make mistakes with her backhand returns.Gauff, however, could not complete her team's comeback, as Kawa and Zielinski ‍won 7-6(5) 7-6(3) in the mixed ⁠doubles, ensuring Poland's progress ‌to Sunday's final."I'm so proud of our team... I gave everything that I had. It means a lot, it's a great victory for us," Kawa said. BENCIC STEERS SWITZERLAND TO VICTORYBelinda Bencic led Switzerland to their first United Cup final, beating Elise Mertens in the singles before returning alongside Jakub Paul to clinch a doubles win.In the deciding mixed doubles match, the Swiss duo claimed a 6-3 0-6 10-5 win over Mertens and Zizou Bergs in an hour and 17 minutes.Bencic and Paul coasted through the first set but won a total of just 12 points in the second set as the match went into a tiebreak.The Swiss pair did well to shake off their collapse and refocus, taking five points in a row to give ​themselves a 9-4 lead and then crossing ‌the finish line when Bergs netted a return."It's easy to find the energy with this team. It's just great to play with Belinda. ⁠I mean, just hats off to her ‍to play almost three hours and then come out again for the doubles," Paul said.The tie was played in gruelling conditions as temperatures hovered around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).Earlier, Bergs needed an energy-sapping two-and-a-half hours on court to beat Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-7(4) 6-3. Bergs took the first set with ease but was pushed hard in the second as the Swiss captain rallied to level the match.Bergs found himself down ​40-0 on Wawrinka’s serve at 4-3 in the third set, but the Belgian clawed his way back and claimed a decisive break.In the tie's first match, Bencic kept alive her undefeated run at the tournament as she beat Elise Mertens 6-3 4-6 7-6(0) and put Switzerland in front.Bencic, a former Olympic gold medallist, has won all four singles and all four mixed doubles matches during the United Cup."It feels like 170 kilos fell off my shoulders - I was so stressed; I really wanted to do well, and today I felt so much pressure to not let my team down," Bencic said."I ⁠was really focused on myself, on breathing, and I'm super happy that I stayed tough in the important moments." 

World number four Coco Gauff suffered her first-ever defeat at the United Cup Monday when she was stunned by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 6-7 (3/7), 6-0 in a blow to her Australian Open preparations. But after Taylor Fritz won to level the tie for the United States, Gauff made amends with Christian Harrison in the mixed doubles, beating Ivonne Cavalle-Reimers and Inigo Cervantes 7-6 (7/5), 6-0 to seal a quarter-final spot. Gauff had won all six of her previous United Cup singles matches for the USA and had a 3-0 record in mixed doubles. It was the first win over a top-five player for Bouzas Maneiro. “I know Coco and she’s a fighter,” the 42nd-ranked Bouzas Maneiro said in Perth. “She’s there all the time in the match, so I knew that I had to be there. Even if you are 3-0 or 4-0 up, you have to be ready.” World number four Fritz, who is battling a knee problem, needed more than three hours to beat Jaume Munar 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 7-6 (8/6). “I was getting exhausted late in the second set, I had to unload five or six shots just to win a single point,” said Fritz, who saved a match point in the third set tiebreak. “I started feeling my knee towards the end but it didn’t get any worse. It was not bad enough to stop me from playing through.” Bold win for HurkaczIn Sydney, Germany’s world number three Alexander Zverev was also on the end of a shock United Cup result, beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who had not played since June because of knee surgery. “It’s been a while since I’ve been competing. Seven months I’ve been going through difficult times with the team and it was very challenging,” Hurkacz said. “We went through a long period of time not competing and not knowing when we would be able to be back on court again. “I was just trying to cherish and enjoy every moment here on the court today.” Former world number six Hurkacz has tumbled to 83rd in the rankings but faced just one break point in his 83-minute victory. “I was serving quite well. I was finding nice spots, so that’s definitely a nice feeling to really have good rhythm on the serve,” Hurkacz said. “Just so pleased with the performance and just also so much fun to see the fans again.” Swiatek fights backIga Swiatek closed out the tie for Poland defeating Eva Lys in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 fightback. Earlier the Czech Republic knocked out Norway with a 3-0 win in Sydney. Greece swept to an unassailable 2-0 lead over Britain as Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Billy Harris 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) and Maria Sakkari beat Emma Raducanu for the first time, stopped the 2021 US Open champion 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. ‘Fed up with losing’“I got fed up with losing tight matches like this,” two-time Grand Slam finalist Tsitsipas said of his victory. “I used all of my power to make sure it did not happen again. “I’ve not played such a high-quality match in a long time.” The Australian Open starts on January 18.
