Frances Tiafoe left Arthur Ashe Stadium court to a standing ovation on Friday, but he won't be coming back on Sunday.The 28-year-old Washington native fell in four sets to compatriot Ben Shelton in a blockbuster US Open semi-final, coming up empty in his third trip to the last four in the last five years. "You never want to be too confident you can get back to it, but I feel pretty confident I can get back to it, for sure," "Big Foe" said."I'm just happy with how I've been doing and how I've been showing up every week. "I had a little blip, just having a little wrist thing. Outside of that, I've been showing up every week, which is something I really wanted to do and something I was happy about doing."Despite the disappointment, Tiafoe leaves Flushing Meadows in a much better state of mind than he was in after a third-round loss last year."I was doing my interview here last year, and it was really, really bad how I felt where I was at," he said. "It's hard, man. I'm upset, but I'm at the same time so proud of myself of where I've been." Tiafoe won the ATP grass court title in Halle this year and reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters in the run-up to the Open.But he said he just didn't have the firepower he needed against Shelton. "Even though I've won a lot of matches, still something that's lacking for me is my serve percentage-wise. I was working way too hard on my serve, and he was serving 82%. "It' kind of hard. Especially lefties, moving around, spins, kicks, sliders, big ones. Obviously he can get it up there when he's really juicing out."For me, I'm grinding, grinding, grinding in service games, and he was trying to break. I think that was the biggest thing."It's something to work on as he plots a way to give himself more chances on the game's biggest stages. "Ultimately I want to do the thing, man. I want to be a Grand Slam champion one day ... just get back to the drawing board and keep working."

Frances Tiafoe has higher hopes for himself in his latest U.S. Open run, after a nerve-testing five-set comeback on Tuesday to reach the semi-final for a third time and underscore his mettle at the year's final major.The 11th seed has provided treasured memories for the home fans in New York, from his dragon-slaying defeat of Rafa Nadal en route to the 2022 semi-final, to his blockbuster win over compatriot Ben Shelton two years ago.But the Cincinnati runner-up this year is ready to write a new chapter this time around, after a roller-coaster comeback performance against Alex Michelsen over five sets."I'm just a different person in general. Those two runs (to the semi-finals) were great, something I will cherish forever, but I'm not that person who I was when I made one in 2022 and when I made one in '24. I'm not that person. I'm excited to see what this me does," said Tiafoe, who plays Shelton who beat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz."I have higher hopes for myself. So yeah, it's great. The tournament is still going. There's a lot more tennis to be played, a lot more sets to be played, and a lot more physical things to be done. We're going to enjoy this, but we got to keep going."Tiafoe advances with the ever-present American men's major drought looming over him, with U.S. fans having seen their hopes lifted - and then dashed - many times over the 23 years since Andy Roddick last lifted the trophy in New York."I mean, the women's side, they've been killing it for so long. It's not something new," said Tiafoe, giving a wide smile as he rattled off a list of achievements from his female counterparts."But the guys, we've been doing pretty well. Someone is always going deep in majors... I mean, hopefully we can do the thing, and that's ultimately try to do the thing after two weeks. That's like the next big step." 

American world number 26 Frances Tiafoe has claimed the ATP tournament in Halle, a traditional Wimbledon warm-up event, after a dominant win over countryman Taylor Fritz on Sunday.Tiafoe cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 win over the world number nine on the back of his booming serve, dropping just seven points on his own serve throughout the match.The 28-year-old American won in one hour and seven minutes to claim the fourth title of his career, his first since 2023 and first at the ATP 500 level. Wimbledon begins on June 29.The unseeded Tiafoe beat three top 10 players - French Open finalist and world number 10 Flavio Cobolli, world number four Felix Auger Aliassime and now the ninth-ranked Fritz -- to win the tournament.Tiafoe had not beaten Fritz since 2016, a run of seven straight defeats including the 2024 US Open final.The defeat continued a disappointing week for the 28-year-old Fritz.The grass court specialist had never lost a final on the surface in his career but has now lost two in a week, after going down to fellow American Ben Shelton in the final of the Stuttgart ATP tournament last Sunday.Fritz made the final after coming from a set down to beat freshly minted French Open champion Alexander Zverev in three sets on Saturday.Tiafoe qualified for the showpiece after a comfortable win over German Daniel Altmaier in straight sets, losing just four games.
