Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou soared out to a record-equalling fourth European long jump title in Birmingham on Tuesday, but Italian Marcell Jacobs was unable to claim a third 100m gold.Tentoglou, the double Olympic champion, came under pressure from Swiss athlete Simon Ehammer, but produced a winning 8.44m on his fourth attempt.Tentoglou emulated Germany's Heike Drechsler who won four successive European women's long jump titles between 1986 and 1998."This was one of the hardest finals I have ever done," said Tentoglou. "I am good in all conditions but this wind was so hard on us long jumpers."Ehammer is a very strong guy and he was kind of OK with it. But for the other jumpers and me, it was incredibly difficult."Tentoglou added: "I had to try so hard for this 8.44m jump. It is nothing for me usually but today it was so hard to do. This is one of my most precious victories because it is also a complex season for me. This is the start of winning golds again."Like Tentoglou, Jacobs is a proven championship performer.But the Tokyo Olympic gold medallist and firm favourite for the blue riband event fell short in his quest to win a third title and equal a feat only achieved by Ukrainian Valeriy Borzov (1969, 1971, 1974) and Britain's Linford Christie (1986, 1990, 1994).The 31-year-old Italian suffered a terrible start and seemed to pull up halfway through the race before continuing to the finish line in a jog. He then walked off with a slight limp."I think my injury is serious because I felt something before the start when I tried the blocks," said Jacobs."Something pulled on my adductor so I know it was serious. In the blocks I tried to push at the limit but at 50m I felt something pull seriously."Now I will try to understand how serious this is and we will see about the rest of the season. I cannot control everything and this is a part of the sport."'Total domination'With Jacobs out of contention, Jamaican-born Glave sealed victory in 10.09 seconds in a British 1-2 as world indoor 60m champion Jeremiah Azu claimed silver in 10.16sec.Glave's victory came hot on the heels of Amy Hunt winning the women's 100m on Monday."It is domination. Total domination," said Glave.Where Jacobs faltered, Nadia Battocletti remained resolute, the Italian striking with 200 metres to run to comfortably defend her 5,000m title in 15:37.84."It was a little crazy, we touched each other a lot during the race as it was very tactical," Battocletti said."I waited a little before going to push for the lead.When I was ahead, I was determined not to let go of the lead."It is the latest accolade for Battocletti, who has gone on a medal spree since completing a 5,000/10,000m Euro double in Rome two years ago.Since then, she has won two successive European cross country titles, European 10km road gold, Olympic and world 10,000m silver, world 5000m bronze and world indoor 3000m gold.Spain's Marta García took silver in 15:39.98, with another Italian, Micol Majori, rounding out the podium.Dutchwoman Nadine Visser claimed a thrilling victory in the 100m hurdles, edging Poland's Pia Skrzyszowska in a photo finish in 12.67sec.A tight finish across the field saw France's Laetitia Bapte grab bronze ahead of Switzerland's reigning world champion Ditaji Kambundji.Hungary's Olympic silver medallist Bence Halasz broke the Polish stranglehold on the European men's hammer throw, managing a world-leading 84.25m for victory.It was Halasz's first gold after seven previous near-misses on the global stage.Germany's Merlin Hummel claimed silver with 81.30m, Ukraine's Mykhaylo Kokhan taking bronze (79.49). 

Greek long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou kept his bid for a fourth European title on track at the opening day of the 2026 athletics championships in Birmingham on Monday.Double Olympic champion Tentoglou sailed into the final of the men's long jump with an effort of 8.26m at the Alexander Stadium that secured automatic qualification."Tomorrow I want to jump 8.50m, 8.60m and win," said the 28-year-old Greek."I'm good, so I should be able to. I have defended so many titles, so I don't feel the pressure, I feel excited."Italian Francesco Ettore Inzoli, with a wind-assisted 8.34m, and Serbian Luka Boskovic (8.33) led the way into Tuesday's final.The world outdoor and indoor champion from 2025, Italy's Mattia Furlani, missed out on qualification with one effort of 7.73m on his comeback from injury.Like Tentoglou, Poland's Wojciech Nowicki is also a serial European gold medallist, having won the last three men's hammer throw titles, in Berlin in 2018, Munich in 2022 and Rome two years ago.But Nowicki, Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021 and who also has five world medals to his name (two silver, three bronze), missed out on qualification for Tuesday's final.He managed a best of 74.49m, which saw him finish 13th, 73cm off the 12th and final qualifier spot.Nowicki's teammate Pawel Fajdek, the five-time world gold medallist who also won an European title in 2016, will ensure Polish interest in an event the country has dominated in recent times.Czech Volodymyr Myslyvcuk (79.61m) and Hungary's Bence Halasz (79.58) led the qualifiers, the only two athletes comfortably beyond the automatic qualification standard of 78.00m.The Netherlands' Jessica Schilder looked comfortable in qualifying for the women's shot put, the final of which will be held later Monday.The two-time defending champion comes to Birmingham in fine form, having made history at the Shanghai Diamond League when she threw 21.09m to not only break the Diamond League record, but also became just the third woman in the world to break 21 metres since the turn of the millennium.Schilder, seeking to become just the second woman to win the event three or more times, will face stiff competition from Germany's Yemisi Mabry, formerly Ogunleye.Olympic champion Mabry topped qualifying with a best of 19.25m, while Schilder progressed with a first-round effort of 19.00m."I'm really not a huge fan of qualifying sessions in the morning if I'm completely honest. I really don't like it," said Schilder."The first step was to get through qualifying and that's done, so now it's about focusing on tonight."Max Burgin and Ben Pattison delighted the British crowd by qualifying for the semi-finals of the men's 800m.France's Yanis Meziane ran the fastest heat, in 1min 45.10sec, but teammate and defending champion Gabriel Tual only just snuck in.Tual, the sixth?fastest man and the second?fastest European in the two-lap race, was the 13th and final qualifier in 1:46.33.The evening session at the 18,000-capacity Alexander Stadium features five finals.Golds will be up for grabs for both men and women in the shot put, while Amy Hunt will be vying for a British victory in the women's 100m.Jakob Ingebrigtsen is gunning for a seventh European title in the men's 5,000m, while there are also bragging rights to claim in the mixed 4x400m relay.
