Reigning champion Tadej Pogacar won the third stage of the Tour de France on Monday to snatch the "special" leader's yellow jersey from rival Jonas Vingegaard.The world champion and Vingegaard are dead level on time but Pogacar took over the race lead by virtue of his better finishing positions in the opening three stages.It was Pogacar's 22nd Tour stage victory and his 10th in the Pyrenees.The 27-year-old Slovenian finished two seconds ahead of the Dane and also earned four more bonus seconds than Vingegaard to wipe out his six-second deficit from the start of the day."Of course, to take the yellow jersey is the dream for any cyclist of any age," said Pogacar."For me it's, I don't know which time already, but every time I can get it again on my shoulders, it feels really special."Former Giro d'Italia winner Richard Carapaz came past French teenage prodigy Paul Seixas to take third in the same time as Vingegaard at the end of a 196km stage which started in Granollers, Spain and finished in Les Angles in the French Pyrenees. PLEA FROM ORGANIZERSDespite a plea from organisers for fans to stay away because of raging wildfires just 70 kilometres away from the finish, there were plenty of people by the side of the roads in France.Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel was eighth at 4sec and remains third overall but fell to 23sec off the lead.Sunday's stage two winner Isaac Del Toro is fourth overall at 24sec after finishing eighth, with Spaniard Juan Ayuso (27sec) and Seixas (48sec) rounding out the top six.After Pogacar let his UAE Team Emirates team-mate Del Toro take the victory on Sunday's finish on the Montjuic hill in Barcelona, this time it was the Mexican who led out his team leader for a decisive sprint to the line.Pogacar left no doubt that he had his eyes on both the stage victory and the yellow jersey with a dominant win."It's because of Isaac today (that) I got some extra power in the final," said Pogacar."He committed more than 100 percent in the final climb and all the team actually."In the middle of the stage we decided that it's possible to go for the stage win and I'm really, really happy that we started the Tour like this."NO SCRAPS FOR ANYONEOn a day which looked ideally suited to a breakaway, UAE left no scraps for anyone else, leading to some complaints from other teams and commentators that they were killing the spectacle with their domination.UAE sporting director Mauro Gianetti said the stage was too tough for a breakaway to stay away."It was an unfavourable route (for the breakaway) because it was very demanding, there was more than 4,000-metres of elevation gain," said the Italian."I'm sorry... we're doing our job."An 18-man breakaway finally formed after 70km and stretched out a maximum lead of three minutes.At that point, UAE took over the pace-setting."Tadej said he feels good and then Florian (Vermeersch) just started to pull," said UAE's Austrian rider Felix Grossschartner. 'BREAKAWAY DIDN'T COOPERATE'"I think the breakaway didn't cooperate so well... so we could decrease the gap quite a lot there."I think this was really a main factor that we finally decided to go for the stage."UAE had reduced the gap by half by the time the break reached the 9.3km-long first-category Col de Toses climb, just over halfway through the stage.The break thinned out to a six-man group by the top and then with 34km left, French pair Alex Baudin and Nicolas Prodhomme set off alone.Prodhomme lasted only another eight kilometres and Baudin, who had done enough to claim the polkadot 'King of the Mountains' jersey, was caught 12km from home.UAE controlled the race until the final short climb to Les Angles, and Pogacar did the rest.It was a miserable day for Belgian sprinter Arnaud De Lie, though, as he pulled out of the Tour.He had been suffering since the opening stage on Saturday and when it became clear that he was not going to make Monday's time limit, he decided to abandon the race.  

Isaac Del Toro eyed double Mexican delight after claiming a Tour de France stage victory on Sunday on his Grand Boucle debut.The 22-year-old led home his team leader Tadej Pogacar for a UAE Team Emirates one-two on the Tour's 169km second stage from Tarragona to Barcelona.Now, all Mexican eyes will be turned to the World Cup last-16 clash in Mexico City between the co-hosts and England.All eyes except Del Toro's, though, as the match is due to kick-off at 2:00am Spanish time."I think I'm not allowed (to watch the game)," said Del Toro, who became the first Mexican Tour stage winner since Raul Alcala in 1990."I would love to see the match but I don't have the energy today to wake up (at 2:00am)."I'm too tired. Today was full gas but I just wish (them) the best of luck, they are doing a crazy good job and everybody is going like 200 percent effort so I hope we take this home. 'IT WILL BE A HARD MATCH'"I know it will be a very hard match but we will see in the morning what the score is."Del Toro also admitted that a Mexican win at the World Cup would top his own Tour success."I think everybody will be pleased about myself," he said."But all the people know football in Mexico and they watch and it's part of the culture."So, I think for satisfaction, they will be a little bit happier because they understand 100 per cent what's going on and what it means for Mexico."It would be one of the best things for the country to win both today (at the Tour) and also after (in the football)."Del Toro paid tribute to Pogacar, who let his teammate take the stage two victory on the short steep final Montjuic climb when he looked to have the legs to be able to push on and win himself."We are quite proud to have one friend like this in the team," said the Mexican, whose stage victory helped him take the lead in the green points jersey and young rider standings."I appreciate a lot his time and how much he wants to perform with us, to be with us, and to help us to be better."Thanks to him the sport changed a little bit and also he is pushing everybody to be better."I know he doesn't realise these kind of things because it's hard, but I'm super proud to be near to one human being like this."It's super nice and you can learn always something about him."'I WILL JUST ENJOY IT'Race leader Jonas Vingegaard came home in fourth, just behind Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, in the same time as the winner.But the bonus seconds claimed by the top three meant that the Dane's lead in the yellow jersey competition was cut to six seconds to four-time winner Pogacar, with Evenepoel now at 15sec and Del Toro at 16sec.With another 19 stages still to go, Vingegaard admitted that his team would not be too disappointed to give up the yellow jersey at some point and let another outfit control the pace in subsequent stages."As I said yesterday and today, I enjoy every single day in the yellow jersey," said the 29-year-old, who had not worn it since his second overall victory in 2023 before claiming it in Saturday's team time-trial."Of course, at one moment, it might be a good thing (to give it up), but for now, I will just enjoy it," added the reigning Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana champion.Young French starlet Paul Seixas was a relieved man to reach the finish after he was almost hit by a driver as he chased back to the peloton following a puncture."I almost hit a car who didn't look in his rear view mirror," said the 19-year-old Tour debutant, who was riding back through the team cars alongside Decathlon CMA CGM team-mate Aurelien Paret-Peintre."I really was very scared with Aurelien, it really was very dangerous."He did manage to rejoin the peloton and finished an impressive ninth, three seconds back from Del Toro, to move up to sixth overall at 42sec from Vingegaard.  

Isaac del Toro overcame a mechanical issue and a long wait to change his bike before launching a late attack to win the second ‌stage of the Tour de France on Sunday, becoming only the second ​Mexican to claim a stage at ‌the race after Raul Alcala more than three decades ago.Del Toro's ‌teammate and defending ⁠champion Tadej Pogacar finished ‌second, cutting Jonas Vingegaard's overall lead ‌to six seconds."It means really everything," said Del Toro after his second Grand Tour stage ⁠win. "As I said before, I'm very privileged. Plenty of confidence by the whole team. I cannot believe I just did it. It's just insane. You cannot believe how it feels now for me, especially for the country."We made a plan for Tadej, I did it but then the gap was bigger and I just went with the flow to the finish line."Slovenian Pogacar crossed the finish line with Del ​Toro and lifted the 22-year-old in the air as the UAE Team Emirates-XRG colleagues celebrated the victory.With about 60km left on the hilly ride from Tarragona to Barcelona, Del Toro suffered a mechanical ‌problem. A miscommunication with his ⁠team on the radio ​left him sitting by the road, waiting for a replacement bike.But Del ​Toro needed little more than 10km to make up for lost time when he got going again and played a central role in his team's strategy during the three laps up Cote de Chateau de Montjuic at the end of the stage.POGACAR AND TEAMMATES DOMINATE THE FINISHBrandon McNulty set the pace for Pogacar during the first climb as two-time winner Vingegaard remained behind his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Victor Campenaerts.Pogacar and three teammates led the way during the second lap of the hill, but Vingegaard's teammate Matteo Jorgenson made a late push to become the ‌second rider to the top behind ‌McNulty.As the race entered the final ⁠10km, Vingegaard positioned himself behind Jorgenson, with four-time champion Pogacar following the Dane closely, ⁠along with others.When Jorgenson fell back ⁠during the final climb, Adam Yates led out Pogacar for the final attack, before Del Toro surprised his rivals with his launch for the finish line."It was not an easy day, I think this circuit is not my favourite terrain so I think I can be pretty happy with keeping the yellow jersey. They did a super job so they really ​deserved the victory today," Vingegaard said.Del Toro said he was happy to get the win for Mexico on the same day that the country's soccer team play in the World Cup round of 16."We have these 11 guys ripping it in the football, they're doing amazing and to be at the same level here in France at the hardest race is like a dream," he added.The French portion of Monday's stage three, a ride from Spain's Granollers to Les Angles in France, will be closed to fans ‌due to risks posed ​by a forest fire raging in the region, officials said on Sunday. 

Jonas Vingegaard said on Saturday pulling on the yellow jersey at the Tour de France gave him closure after a horror crash two years ago almost ended his life.Vingegaard darted up the final climb on the 19.6km opening team time-trial at the Tour in Barcelona to give his Visma-Lease a Bike team the stage victory and himself the overall lead at the Grand Boucle.Two years ago he thought he was going to die after a crashing heavily on a rapid descent at the Tour of the Basque Country.He spent two weeks recovering in hospital from a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and blood in his lung tissue."It's been a few hard years for me for obvious reasons," the emotional 29-year-old Dane told reporters."I've been at times struggling in the last few years and now I feel like I can close this chapter in the book."Of course, it will always be a part of my book, laying there on the ground believing that I'm going to die. '...A BIT EMOTIONAL'"And then coming from that to this point is also for me a bit emotional."To be honest, when you're there on the ground, you don't even think about cycling. I just thought about trying to survive."So to be able to now get the yellow jersey again is a dream coming true, for sure," he added, seemingly close to tears.Vingegaard had not worn the yellow jersey since his second of back-to-back Tour victories in 2023.He made a remarkable recovery from his April 2024 crash to take part in the Tour just three months later, although he was clearly far from his best. WELL BEATENAlthough he was second to arch rival Tadej Pogacar in 2024 and 2025 -- as he had been on his Tour debut in 2021 -- he was well beaten in both of those.This was the first stage since 2023 in which Vingegaard had actually gained time on the Slovenian world champion and four-time Tour winner.But for Vingegaard, just wearing the jersey again was what mattered most."I'm extremely happy and proud of it," he said."It's just something that being back in the yellow jersey is for me the most important here."I'm just extremely happy. It's something I dreamed of for the last three years."'I NEED TO CHILL OUT'As for Pogacar, 27, he was satisfied with UAE Team Emirates' performance in the time-trial, with his burst up the final climb helping them finish third on the stage.The reigning champion is third in the overall standings, just 12 seconds behind Vingegaard.Ahead of Sunday's 169km second stage from Tarragona to Barcelona his main concern was to get some rest.Sunday's stage finishes with three circuits up the same Montjuic hill that provided the finale to the opening stage, on which Pogacar was fastest up the last climb.That earned him the climbers' polkadot jersey."First I need to decompress from today, chill out a little bit, it's not much time left to chill out until bedtime," he said."For tomorrow, it's quite a tricky stage, but it's for puncheurs and it's going to be really hectic in the final."Also before the final it's really complicated sometimes and we need to take care tomorrow and we'll see what we can do in the final." 

Tadej Pogacar begins his quest for history on Saturday as he bids to win a record fifth Tour de France.As has been the case in the previous five years, his main competition will come from Jonas Vingegaard, who beat the Slovenian in 2022 and 2023 but was second to the world champion in 2021, 2024 and last year.Yet the Tour will not be just about those two this year, as France dreams of ending its 41-year wait for a home winner at the Grande Boucle.Teenage prodigy Paul Seixas has dazzled throughout this year, and although no one expects him to actually win the Tour this year -- this will be his first Grand Tour -- he is surely a champion in the making.But over 21 stages -- starting with a team time-trial in Barcelona -- and 3,200 kilometres that will cross the Pyrenees into southwestern France before heading diagonally to the Vosges mountains in the northeast before dropping down to the Alps in the southeast and then finishing in the capital, Paris.It is hard to see past Pogacar, such has been his dominance in cycling in the last three seasons.He has had seven races this season, winning six of them and finishing second in the other one.He won his two stage races, wracking up 13 victories in 16 race days in 2026, never finishing below 12th in any stage."If he's able to stay on his bike... it looks as if he's got this one in the bag," former four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome told AFP.FEW WOULD DISAGREEPogacar insisted there are several rivals who could beat him, but victories over the 27-year-old UAE Team Emirates leader have become a rarity.Vingegaard, 29, described Pogacar as "probably the best rider who has ever been in a bunch".And the Dane is in the form of his life, bristling with confidence after completing the Grand Tour clean sweep in May -- a feat which Pogacar has not yet managed."I think I'm ready for this race and I'm really looking forward to it," said Vingegaard."It's been an amazing year for me so far, so I'm looking forward to hopefully continuing."PODIUM FIGHTOthers, say they are as good as resigned to battling it out for third place behind the two giants of Grand Tours.Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team-mates Remco Evenepoel, the Olympic champion, and Florian Lipowitz have each finished third in the last two years.They are joint team leaders, but also rivals for that final podium spot.Evenepoel insisted that there would be no in-fighting between the pair."Of course, we want to be on the podium, but whether it's him or myself, I think we need to do it in a good way without having this negative energy," he said."We both really want to do what we did already in the past, which is to be on the podium behind Tadej and Jonas."To do so, they are going to have to finish ahead of Seixas, who has comprehensively beaten both this season.Lipowitz was a distant second to Seixas at the Tour of the Basque Country in April, while Evenepoel finished well behind Pogacar and the Frenchman in third at the one-day Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic that same month.Some think that it is too soon for Seixas to be tackling the Tour as Decathlon CMA CGM team leader.NOT THE FRENCHMAN "The priority remains the general classification, to see how that goes," said the 19-year-old."Which position, I don't know yet, but I wouldn't take any risks for anything other than the overall standings."The third favourite for the Tour is Isaac Del Toro.The Mexican has won the UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alps this year, but he is Pogacar's team-mate and will be working for the Slovenian.If he was in any other team, Del Toro would be one of Pogacar's main rivals."It's a great dream that I have had since I was young," Del Toro, 22, said about riding in his first Tour."The truth is that I feel very privileged, very happy." 

Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar is looking forward to continuing his "spectacular" rivalry with Jonas Vingegaard when they meet again as the ‌main contenders in the Tour de France which ​begins on Saturday in ‌Barcelona."The competition between me and Jonas for the last ‌few years ⁠was spectacular," ‌Pogacar told a press conference ‌on Thursday."I think it will continue for a few more years, ⁠I hope. We push each other to new heights every year. So we will see how far we go this year."The two men are the finest Grand Tour riders of their generation and without a doubt among the best in the sport's history.Pogacar is chasing a record-equalling fifth ​Tour title, while Dane Vingegaard is bidding for a third victory following his triumphs in 2022 and 2023.UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider Pogacar, however, ‌does not consider Vingegaard his ⁠only opponent."I ​do not think that he is the only one ​who can come close. I think there are quite a few guys here who can aim for the victory," he said.France's Paul Seixas, Belgium's Remco Evenepoel and Germany's Florian Lipowitz are three podium contenders for the three-week race.Pogacar, who has won the last two editions, is inevitably the race favourite after his dominant start to the season. MODIFIED BUILD-UP TOWARDS TOURThe world champion has modified his build-up towards the Tour, ‌with only 16 days of ‌racing. His wins this ⁠season include a maiden Milan-San Remo title, a third Tour ⁠of Flanders, a fourth ⁠Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Strade Bianche and, more recently, the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse."Pretty good," Pogacar replied when asked about his current form. "Only 16 days of racing but the training kilometres are also counting. There has been a lot, so I ​think we are ready."The four-time Tour de France winner will be supported by a formidable team including Mexico's Isaac del Toro, winner of the recent Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, and Britain's Adam Yates, a third-place finisher in 2023."I think we have had a great team all these years. This year, I think it is about the same as last year," Pogacar said."It will not ‌be an ​easy race but we have a lot of tactics." 

Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar will chase a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title when the 2026 edition begins in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday, with Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard and France's Paul Seixas poised to provide the stiffest competition.Pogacar, who has won the last two editions, aims ‌to join greats Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain and Eddy Merckx on five Tour ​victories. The 27-year-old has never competed ‌less than this season before entering the Tour, in which he will take part ‌for the seventh time. ⁠He has a total of ‌13 stage or general classification wins in ‌16 days of racing, including a maiden Milan-San Remo title, a third Tour of Flanders, a fourth Liege-Bastogne-Liege ⁠and Strade Bianche and, more recently, the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse."The Tour de France is always the biggest challenge of the season and also the race that motivates us the most," Pogacar said. "Every year, you arrive at the start knowing that anything can happen over three weeks, and that’s what makes it so special.""I feel good, I’m looking forward to racing, and I know I’ll have a fantastic group of teammates and staff around me."VINGEGAARD AIMS FOR GIRO-TOUR DOUBLEThe world champion, who ​admitted struggling with knee issues during last year's race and considered withdrawing, will be supported by a formidable team including Mexico's Isaac del Toro, winner of the recent Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, and Britain's Adam Yates, a third-place finisher in 2023.Pogacar's ‌main rival will once again be Vingegaard. ⁠The Dane seems close ​to the form that allowed him to win the world's most prestigious cycling race ​in 2022 and 2023. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider has won all three of his 2026 outings: Paris-Nice, the Tour of Catalunya, and the Giro d'Italia, where he claimed five stage wins.Vingegaard will try to imitate Pogacar, who in 2024 became the eighth and latest rider to achieve the Giro-Tour double."That gave me a tremendous amount of confidence heading into the Tour de France," Vingegaard said. "It gave us a huge boost and reinforced the feeling that we can win the Tour.""A third Tour victory would be a dream come true. It has been three years since I last won the Tour, and ever since then it has remained one of my biggest goals." The Visma-Lease a Bike squad, ‌however, suffered a blow when Belgium's Wout ‌van Aert, winner of 10 Tour stages, ⁠was ruled out with an elbow injury.FRANCE'S BIGGEST HOME HOPE IN A GENERATIONFrance's newest cycling hope, Paul Seixas, ⁠could turn the race for the yellow ⁠jersey into a three-horse affair. The 19-year-old prodigy makes his Tour debut, giving France its biggest hope in a generation of a first home champion since Bernard Hinault in 1985. Seixas made a dazzling start to 2026, winning the Tour of the Basque Country and the Fleche Wallonne in April before being beaten only by Pogacar in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege.However, he had to quit the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes in early June after crashing heavily. He said he ​had been able to resume almost-normal training for the Tour de France, but added: "I’m not setting a more specific goal because I’m heading into the unknown - I’ve never competed in a race this long and demanding before. This is the race I’ve always dreamed of, and I realise how lucky I am to be able to compete in it so early in my career."If he can last three weeks, the Decathlon-CMA CGM rider could challenge for a podium finish along with Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe teammates Remco Evenepoel of Belgium and Florian Lipowitz of Germany, who respectively finished third in 2024 and 2025."The Tour is no longer won by an ‌exceptional rider alone, but by ​an exceptional team," says Zak Dempster, chief of sports at Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.The Tour's 3,320.7 km route features 53,950 metres of climbing across 21 stages. 

Tadej Pogacar took his third stage victory this week as the world champion sealed overall success in the Tour of Switzerland on Sunday after catching French climber Lenny Martinez 800 metres from the line.After a cat-and-mouse chase up the final climb to Villars-sur-Ollon at the end of a brutal 152km-long mountainous stage, the last of the race, Pogacar gradually ate into the Frenchman's 1min 30sec lead.For a while, it looked like it would be touch and go, but Pogacar picked up the pace in the last couple of kilometres and with one kilometre left, his success looked inevitable.Just 200m later, he sauntered past Martinez and came home to win by seven seconds."It was really good to test the legs, the lungs on the climb, it was a really nice climb for that," said the 27-year-old Slovenian.Martinez said he was disappointed and rued Pogacar's insatiable will to win."We tried but he was just too strong in the end," said the 22-year-old, who had been part of an initial 11-man breakaway that broke clear with about 140km to ride."Tadej wins a lot of races and he keeps wanting to keep winning, so it's difficult. I knew he wasn't going to let me win."It was Pogacar's first victory at the Tour of Switzerland -- in his first appearance -- and means that he has now won six of the seven most historic week-long stage races.Having also won the Tour of Romandie in his first participation earlier this season, the only one he has yet to win is the Tour of the Basque Country -- where he was third in 2021 and sixth two years earlier. POGACAR ON A MISSION?Pogacar has seemed on a mission this season to tick off the few remaining major races he had yet to win, claiming Milan-San Remo glory in March and then coming close to winning Paris-Roubaix in April, when he was pipped by Wout van Aert.He has been in ominous form this week, laying down a marker ahead of his bid for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France victory next month.His overall margin of victory ahead of Ecuador's Richard Carapaz, 6:32, was simply stunning and will leave new Giro d'Italia champion Jonas Vingegaard with much to ponder at the Grande Boucle.Pogacar has 13 wins from just 16 race days this year compared to seven from 36 for Vingegaard, who is himself in the form of his life having won all three of his races, triumphing at Paris-Nice and the Tour of Catalonia before the Giro.Dutchman Bart Lemmen finished third in the stage from the breakaway just over a minute and half behind Pogacar, while Carapaz held onto his second place overall as he came home seventh at 2min.Czech Mathias Vacek came home 12th to finish third overall with Norway's Tobias Foss fourth.  

Tadej Pogacar extended his Tour of Switzerland lead after sensationally pipping his one-day classics rival Mathieu van der Poel by just three tenths of a second in Saturday's individual time-trial. Starting last as the race leader, world champion Pogacar drilled his effort over the 23.7km route around Aarburg as hard as he could, right to the line, and it proved enough to deny Van der Poel a morale-boosting victory. "I felt great. I didn't know I was fighting for the win. I knew it was close," said Pogacar, who has won two of the first four stages and is the overwhelming favourite for Sunday's finale in the high mountains. "I was just trying to go all out to the finish and I'm really happy with the win. "It's a great race and I'm happy to take a second win and I'll go out for another one tomorrow." Pogacar now has 11 wins this season in just 15 race days. As for the overall picture at the mountainous Swiss tour, Pogacar gained more than a minute and a half on his nearest challenger, former Giro d'Italia winner Richard Carapaz, to extend his lead to 4min 22sec. Czech Mathias Vacek moved up a place to third overall with an impressive fourth-placed finish on the day and now sits just five seconds behind Carapaz in the overall standings. Young Italian Andrea Bagioli dropped a place in the overall standings to fourth at 4:46 after finishing 43rd in the race against the clock. Van der Poel had sat in the leader's chair for around an hour watching the final 50 riders come to the finish. It was not until the last half a dozen or so that his time came under threat as first Norwegian Tobias Foss finished six seconds slower and then Vacek came home just 10sec down. As Pogacar rolled through the red flag banner indicating he had one kilometre to go, it was clear that it was going to be close. But in true Pogacar style, the 27-year-old Slovenian gave it everything, leaving Van der Poel looking stunned, even managing a wry smile. Stage five on Sunday starts at Villars-sur-Ollon and sees the peloton climb the Col de la Croix twice in full and twice partially over the 150.7-kilometre route.

Tadej Pogacar soared away from his rivals Saturday on the final climb to win for the third time in four days on the Tour of Romandie. At the end of the mountainous ‘queen stage’ of the week-long race, Pogacar attacked twice on the 8.3km final climb the Jaunpass. The first time he went he shook off every other member of a group of more than 20 except second-placed Florian Lipowitz. But the Slovenian kicked again a kilometre from the top and dropped his German rival. After two sprint victories earlier in the six-day race, followed by a defeat at the finish on Friday by French sprinter Dorian Godon, the four-time Tour de France winner this time battled a headwind on the final descent and run to the line before raising his arms in solo victory. Facing the microphone once more as winner at the finish line, Pogacar dismissed the suggestion that his display again suggested hi rivals have no chance when he attacks. “I disagree,” said the World Champion, after praising his UAE team-mates. “The competitors today were really good, strong, and it was really hard to drop Florian. He was really strong,” said Pogacar. “He gave me really hard time keeping the gap the same all the time. It was definitely not easy. It was super hard, and hey, I’m happy with the performance today.” Lipowitz chased doggedly and, after Pogacar relaxed near the line, finished 14 seconds back. The German, who rides for Red Bull-Bora, said that Pogacar had known what he was doing when he attacked at the end of the final climb. “I’m not the fastest guy,” he said. “I like a steady pace, and I think he was right on the last kilometre when he tried to drop me and it worked for him quite well.” Lipowitz trails by 35 seconds, which gives him a chance of springing a surprise in Sunday’s final stage a hilly 178.2km ride from Lucens that ends with a long climb to finish at Leysin. “I’m super happy with today,” Lipowitz said. “One more day!” Pablo Castrillo a Spaniard from Movistar was a distant third at 1 minute 42 seconds. Lenny Martinez,a Frenchman with Bahrain Victorious, is third but trails Pogacar by 2 min 30sec. 

Tadej Pogacar continued to dominate the Tour de Romandie, winning a sprint finish to take the second full stage the day after winning the mountainous opener. Pogacar cracked a smile and held two fingers in the air to signal a second victory as he finished almost a bike length ahead of Frenchman Dorian Godon. After the last survivor of a four-man breakaway was caught, Florian Lipowitz launched the sprint but was chased down by Godon, but the Ineos rider had UAE team leader Pogacar on his wheel. The Slovenian world champion surged up the inside in the final 100 metres of a rolling 173.1 kilometre stage through Switzerland from Rue to Vucherens. New Zealander Finn Fisher-Black was third. “Some guys went too early and it was an advantage for me,” said Pogacar at the finish. “For me it was all under control and a super sprint for me.” Pogacar, who is competing in the Romandie for the first time, picked up 10 bonus seconds to increase his overall lead to 17 seconds over Lipowitz, a German who rides for Red Bull, with Frenchman Lenny Martinez of Bahrain Victorious third at 26 seconds. Today’s third stage, a 176.6km circuit starting and ending in Orbe, includes one second-category climb. 

World champion Tadej Pogacar stamped his authority on the Tour de Romandie by sprinting to victory Wednesday’s opening full stage. The 27-year-old, who is competing at Romandie for the first time, started the day in sixth place after Tuesday’s short 3.2km prologue won by Frenchman Dorian Godon. But he moved into the lead in the overall standings after beating German Florian Lipowitz into second, with France’s Lenny Martinez third at the end of the 171.2km ride through Switzerland’s French-speaking region. Incredibly, it was Pogacar’s fifth victory in just seven days of racing this year, having won four of five one-day classics before heading to Romandie - including three of the four Monuments so far this season. This victory came just three days after Pogacar triumphed for the fourth time at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, winning the 13th Monument of his glory-laden career. This is one of two week-long stage races the Slovenian is competing in as his build up to a bid for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title in July. In June he will race at the Tour de Suisse. He made his move halfway up the one major climb of the day, the 8.9km-long ascent to the village of Ovronnaz, with a tough average gradient of 9.8 percent. Only Bahrain Victorious rider Martinez was able to stay with Pogacar when he attacked, with still 38km to ride to the finish. Red Bull-Bora Hansgroher’s Lipowitz and Colombian Jefferson Cepeda climbed their way back up to the leading duo about two kilometres from the summit. Ceeda, though, then fell away and Norway’s Jorgen Nordhagen caught the trio at the front on the descent to the finish in the valley of Martigny. The four riders came to the line together, with UAE Team Emirates leader Pogacar easily distancing his rivals to win the sprint. Cepeda came home in a group of 13 riders 21 seconds back which included former Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana winner Primoz Roglic. Lipowitz moved into second overall at seven seconds, with Martinez third at 16sec and Nordhagen at 23sec. Today’s second stage is a lumpy 173.1km run from Rue to Vucherens which should suit breakaway specialists.
