Midfielder Cristian Volpato, who played for Australia at the World Cup, allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped for speeding twice in Sydney, according to multiple media reports.Volpato, 22, is a dual citizen of Italy and Australia who switched allegiances to the Socceroos just before this year's World Cup. He first was stopped for speeding at approximately 11:05 p.m. local time on Thursday on the Anzac Bridge in Sydney, per a statement by the New South Wales (NSW) police.A roadside breath test on Volpato came back negative, and he was issued an infringement notice for driving more than 20km/h (12.4 mph) over the speed limit.Just over two hours later, Volpato was stopped again on the same bridge, with the police allegedly clocking him at 50km (30 miles) an hour over the designated speed limit.In the second incident, another roadside breath test allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine, with a secondary sample of oral fluid taken for further analysis.Volpato also was given a second infringement notice for excess speed and had his international driver's license suspended for six months, per the NSW police. INQUIRIES WILL CONTINUEThe NSW police said their inquiries will continue."Football Australia is aware of allegations involving one of our players," the Australian soccer federation said in a statement. "We have been in contact with the player and continue to monitor the matter and support the player throughout this process."Volpato was born in Camperdown, New South Wales, Australia.Having played for Italy's junior national teams since 2022, Volpato changed his national eligibility to Australia in May before the 2026 FIFA World Cup teams were revealed. Per FIFA rules, the switch was legal because Volpato never played a competitive match for Italy's senior team.Volpato had four shots in three appearances for the Socceroos in this year's World Cup.Australia was competing in their sixth straight World Cup. After reaching the Round of 16 in 2022 for the second time in their history, Australia were eliminated on penalties by Egypt in the round of 32 this time around. 

England cricket legend Andrew Flintoff was named Tuesday as head coach of the Sydney Thunder, the Big Bash League team said, hailing it as their "most significant off-field acquisition in club history".The 48-year-old has signed a two-year deal for what will be his first overseas coaching role, following weeks of speculation.Former England captain Flintoff starred for his country across all three formats and was last year linked with taking over from Brendon McCullum as England's head coach.The charismatic former all-rounder has cut his teeth in coaching with the second-string England Lions, as well as the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.In 2022 the popular Flintoff was left with severe facial and rib injuries after a car crash while filming for the hit BBC television programme Top Gear.The Big Bash League is Australia's premier Twenty20 competition. 'CAN'T WAIT TO GET STARTED'"I can't wait to get over there and get started," he said in a statement released by the team."I'm looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, you look at the players, you look at the support, and I think there's something really big to build on."The Thunder squad is led by former Australia opener David Warner and also includes Sam Konstas, the 20-year-old once seen as Warner's successor at Test level.They finished bottom of the table last time out, and Flintoff replaces Trevor Bayliss, who departed the role in February after six seasons at the helm."I want our players to connect with the people that come and see us. I want them to enjoy playing cricket," said Flintoff, who had a stint in the BBL as a player over a decade ago."However, all that is underpinned by hard work... I want them to play with passion and leave everything out there on the field."I'm excited to come over, get involved and coach this team. I'm here to do the best job I possibly can for the team and everybody that comes out and supports us," he said.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone smashed the long-standing United States women's 400 metre record to surge into the final at the World Athletics Championships. The 26-year-old American, who is the world record holder at the 400m hurdles but has chosen to run the flat race in Tokyo, blazed through her semi-final in 48.29sec.That was almost half a second faster than Sanya Richards-Ross's previous US record of 48.70, which had stood since 2006. McLaughlin-Levrone will be the red-hot favourite to capture her first 400m world title in tomorrow's final and said she was "honoured" to better Richards-Ross's national mark."Definitely wasn't expecting that time but it just shows the fitness is there," she said. "Excited for the finals and grateful to have taken down a record by an amazing woman."McLaughlin-Levrone was one of the stars when Tokyo hosted the Covid-delayed Olympic Games in 2021. She set a world record of 51.46sec when winning 400m hurdles gold in one of the stand-out performances of those Games. She was also part of the US 4x400m relay squad that took gold.She said she still had gas left in the tank after her semi-final performance and was taken aback when she looked at her time on the scoreboard. "I wasn't expecting that but it's not surprising because I know the work's been put in," she said. "It's really just about executing and I'm grateful that it showed me that it's there."McLaughlin-Levrone was joined in the semi-finals by Paris Olympics champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, who went through in a time of 49.82. Paris Games silver medallist Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain also qualified along with Poland's Natalia Bukowiecka and Jamaica's Nickisha Pryce.Britain's Amber Anning, who qualified with a second-quickest time of 49.38, said McLaughlin-Levrone would be the woman to beat in the final. "I think she wanted to put herself into a good position going into that final," said Anning. "I just tried to stay with her as much as possible but still execute my race."
