Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar finished with 10 wickets as India thrashed Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test in Galle on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.Playing only his second Test, Suthar impressed with his line and length to ensure India a memorable win in their 600th Test match.Suthar, 24, took four wickets in the first innings and kept up the onslaught to take 6-55, helping bowl out the hosts for 206 shortly after lunch on the final day.Set a target of 372, Sri Lanka's batters failed to apply themselves other than Sonal Dinusha, who top-scored in both innings.India captain Shubman Gill called the victory "very satisfying"."We were in a comfortable position but were not sure if the match would go on (because of weather), but the team responded well," he said.Gill praised Suthar and the batsmen for their effort on a wicket that was not easy to score runs off."He has been bowling magnificently. Looks like a very promising guy and someone who can play for India for a long time," he said.India claimed two wickets in the morning session after Sri Lanka resumed on 84-4 and then quickly ran through the tail.Captain Dhananjaya de Silva (59) and first-innings centurion Dinusha tried to fight back, batting for over two hours to add 95 runs for the fifth wicket. 'It was not easy'De Silva, dismissed off a no-ball early in his innings, looked set to make the most of the reprieve, posting his 20th half-century.But his knock ended after he attempted a sweep shot off Ravindra Jadeja and was caught at short fine leg by Suthar."It was not easy (batting fourth," said De Silva."They won the toss, got the runs on the board, and with our batting, we lost wickets and it went downhill from there."Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella posted a half-century in the first innings but couldn't make an impact in the second.Dickwella fell for 10 when he attempted to hit Prasidh Krishna over the slips but ended up edging one to the wicketkeeper.Suthar triggered a late-order collapse with a triple-wicket maiden after lunch and then in his next over claimed the last wicket of Keshara Nuwantha as Sri Lanka folded 36 minutes after lunch.The last four wickets fell for seven runs with Suthar claiming all four.The 25-year-old Dinusha (84) put up a solid effort despite little support from his teammates.Playing his fourth Test, he showcased maturity beyond his age, taking on India's spinners with nimble footwork.He was dismissed when Dhruv Jurel at leg slip took a bat-pad catch. He faced 128 deliveries during his defiant knock and hit eight fours and one six."We believed that we could draw the game even at lunch," said Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten."Our instruction to the lower order batters was to bat as long as they could. We just needed one big partnership but once Dinusha was dismissed, it all fell off quickly."Apart from Suthar, the other stand out performer for India was batter Devdutt Padikkal, who posted 167 and 44 in the game, having come in as a late injury replacement."The wicket had its natural wear and tear but it was a good Test wicket," Padikkal said."Turned a lot more from the third day onwards. In the end it was all about who came out on top with their skill-set."The teams head to Colombo for the second Test starting on Sunday. BRIEF SCORES: India 462 (Padikkal 167, Rahul 82, Jayasuriya 4-109) and 193 (Pant 66, Asitha 4-31, Jayasuriya 3-43) beat Sri Lanka 284 (Dinusha 100, Dickwella 80, Suthar 4-76, Jadeja 3-57) and 206 (Dinusha 84, Dhananjaya 59, Suthar 6-55) by 165 runs. 

India's Manav Suthar returned a match haul of seven wickets on debut as India hammered Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs on Monday, their biggest victory in a Test.India forced the visitors to follow on and spinners Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav then shared seven wickets between them as Afghanistan were bowled out for 112 on the third day of the one-off Test in New Chandigarh.Suthar, a left-arm spinner, set up India's win after taking 6-33 as Afghanistan were dismissed for 152 in response to India's first innings total of 564-8 declared.India's record win in the five-day format surpasses their hammering of the West Indies by an innings and 272 runs in Rajkot in 2018.India's batters shined in their only innings as Skipper Shubman Gill, who top-scored with 126, and opener KL Rahul (100) stood out."A complete win, ticked all the boxes so very happy," Gill said.Kuldeep, a left-arm wrist spinner, took two wickets in two balls to wrap up Afghanistan's second innings after the injured Sharafuddin Ashraf did not come out to bat.Off-spinner Sundar reduced Afghanistan to 98-5 at tea, and Afghanistan's batting folded early in the final session to be bowled out in 35.5 overs.The Afghan openers started steadily before fast bowler Mohammed Siraj trapped Abdul Malik in front for eight.Kuldeep then broke through Rahmanullah Gurbaz's resistance on 24, and Sundar dismissed Rahmat Shah for 13.Sundar struck again to remove captain Hashmatullah Shahidi for five. Wickets kept falling, with Suthar taking his seventh wicket of the match when he trapped Afsar Zazai lbw for eight.Suthar was named player of the match and on learnings from his dream debut, said, "keep being patient, stick to your plans and keep hitting the right areas consistently".Kuldeep dismissed debutant Nangeyalia Kharote and then Mohammad Saleem for a duck as 14 wickets fell on the day. 'WE LEARNED A LOT""I think we learned a lot from this game because we don't get enough opportunities to play this format, but everybody knows that India is a tough team playing in their own conditions," said Shahidi. "Hopefully that we learn to play under pressure."It was Afghanistan's 13th Test outing since their bruising introduction to the five-day format when they lost to India by an innings and 262 runs inside two days in 2018.Afghanistan offered some resistance in the morning session, with Rahmat making 60 in the first innings.Rahmat reached his sixth Test half-century with a four as he and Ashraf put up some fight.Suthar, 23, broke the stand when he had Ashraf trapped lbw.He then bowled Rahmat for his fifth wicket, and trapped Mohammad Saleem lbw three balls later for a duck.Suthar is only the fifth Indian and the first since veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in 2011 to take six wickets in an innings on debut. BRIEF SCORES India 564 for 8 dec (Gill 126, Rahul 100, Saleem 6-140) beat Afghanistan 152 (Rahmat 60, Suthar 6-33, Prasidh 3-37) and 112 (Atal 42, Sundar 4-36, Kuldeep 3-30) by an innings and 300 runs 

Debutant spinner Manav Suthar took three wickets to dent Afghanistan's reply after India declared their innings on 564-8 in their one-off cricket Test on Sunday. Afghanistan were 113-5 at stumps on day two after Suthar had Afsar Zazai caught and bowled for three. Rahmat Shah was unbeaten on 43, with Afghanistan still trailing India by 451 runs at New Chandigarh. Afghanistan pace bowler Mohammad Saleem earlier took six wickets before India ended their first innings in the second session with Washington Sundar unbeaten on 52. A fourth-wicket stand of 169 between captain Shubman Gill, who made 126, and Rishabh Pant (81) was the highlight of the Indian innings after the hosts resumed on 368-3. Afghanistan started on a shaky note when left-arm spinner Suthar dismissed opener Abdul Malik for 16 with his fourth ball in Test cricket on the stroke of tea. "My focus was to bowl in the right areas and back my strengths," said the 23-year-old Suthar. "There was help from the surface, so my idea was to get the landing right." SUNDAR PRAISES SUTHAR His efforts drew praise from fellow spinner Sundar. "We as players who have been playing with him (in domestic cricket) know what he brings to the table and the amount of skills he has. It was a genuine treat to watch," Sundar said. Pace bowler Prasidh Krishna dismissed Sediqullah Atal for 17 before Suthar had Rahmanullah Gurbaz caught at second slip for 12. Shah then attempted to steady the innings with Hashmatullah Shahidi, who was trapped leg before by Krishna for 20. Saleem, 23, struck twice in the morning session and then dismissed Suthar for 28 after lunch to claim his first five-wicket haul in Tests. He consistently bowled at speeds above 140 km/h (86.9 mph) to impress in just his second Test. "What I enjoyed about him was his consistency today," Afghanistan coach Richard Pybus told reporters. "He was just fantastic and held his length." Left-hander Sundar and Mohammed Siraj went on the attack to boost India's total.  TWO SIXES IN ONE OVER Siraj hammered debutant left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote for a four and two sixes in one over before he was bowled by Saleem. Saleem earlier broke the stand between Gill and Pant when he had the Indian captain caught behind with a delivery that held its line. Wicketkeeper Pant added 31 runs to his overnight score and was eyeing a century when he was caught at long-off while attempting a big hit off Shahidi. Afghanistan made even harder work of it by repeatedly failing to review borderline decisions. Gill had added just five runs to his overnight score of 103 when he was struck on the pads by pace bowler Azmatullah Omarzai. Afghanistan did not ask for a review after Gill was given not out, but ball-tracking technology showed the delivery would have hit the leg stump. Pant, on 54, also survived the next ball despite ball-tracking showing that Omarzai had caught a faint edge, with Afghanistan again deciding against a review. BRIEF SCORES Afghanistan 113 for 5 (Rahmat 43*, Suthar 3-21, Prasidh 2-27) trail India 564 for 8 dec (Gill 126, Rahul 100, Saleem 6-140) by 451 runs
