2026-27 NBA Preview: Power rankings of the participating teams

There's an argument to be made that the previous season's champion should always be given the honour of topping power rankings to begin the following season.I love to argue, so I'll take that debate.Kudos to the New York Knicks for stunning the basketball world with an impressive run through the Eastern Conference playoffs and then a shocking upset over the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals.But, let's be honest: the Knicks were not the best team in the NBA last season. Their triumph in the Finals was equal parts tired opponent and retired coach.So, sorry Knicks, you start out at No. 3 this season, and even that is generous. By the way, season-opening Power Rankings are not a prediction of the eventual season outcome. I'm picking the 76ers to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy.Like the Indianapolis 500, where the car best equipped for the final laps doesn't always start on the pole, here's where I believe the league's 30 teams tip off the 2026-27 campaign.1. Oklahoma City ThunderLet's not forget they were one win away from being a heavy favorite in the Finals while playing without Jalen Williams. Sam Presti's meticulously constructed roster is designed for long-term success.2. San Antonio SpursWhen's Game 6? I'm still picking the Spurs.3. New York KnicksLeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Kawhi Leonard and Tyrese Haliburton are back. The road to the Eastern Conference finals is bumpier than ever.4. Philadelphia 76ersEnough with the concern over how many games LeBron James and Joel Embiid will play. Philly's depth (Dean Wade, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Anfernee Simons) is better than we can recall.5. Cleveland CavaliersLast year's Eastern runner-up lost out on LeBron, but the Cavs did stumble upon the vastly underrated Peyton Watson. Let's call that a push.6. Boston CelticsIf Paul George can stay healthy ... yeah, yeah, where have we heard that before?7. Detroit PistonsThey finished first in the East last year during the regular season, but there's something about the Jalen Duren situation that smells worse than Lake Erie.8. Houston RocketsMuch of the NBA's "new" look is actually an old look -- as in key players returning from injury. The Rockets get back one of the best (Fred VanVleet).9. Miami HeatImagine Wilt Chamberlain playing for Gregg Popovich. Giannis, meet Erik The Great.10. Minnesota TimberwolvesNow imagine Dillon Brooks teaming up with Draymond Green. That's a bit of what Minnesota has in new faces LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga. You bring the firecrackers, I'll bring the punk.11. Denver NuggetsNikola Jokic's pending opt-out makes him this year's Giannis ... and look what that did to the Bucks last season.12. Toronto RaptorsKawhi Leonard escaped the Clippers mess relatively unscathed, making it out of the country. The question now is: Will he be allowed back in?13. Indiana PacersWith the exception of Myles Turner, Caitlin Clark's favorite team has gotten the band back together from the crowd-pleasing 2024-25 tour that played its final show in Game 7 of the Finals.14. Los Angeles LakersLooking where to draw the line between contenders and when-does-baseball- season-start clubs? That said, maybe LA fans are in no hurry to talk baseball these days.15. Atlanta HawksEntering the first full season of the post-Trae Young era, Atlanta hopes Jalen Johnson can fill the star void.16. Charlotte HornetsSacrificing LaMelo Ball did not accomplish the goal of a Stephen Curry homecoming. That dream has died.17. Orlando MagicNikola Vucevic or Kristaps Porzingis? You make the call on today's greatest franchise destroyer.18. Portland Trail BlazersThey've gone all-in (Chauncey Billups pun intended) on Ja-Ja (Ja Morant/Deni Avdija). Now, if only they could convince A'ja Wilson to change leagues.19. Golden State WarriorsThe last time this franchise imported a powerful Michigan big man, Chris Webber tried to overthrow Don Nelson. Be forewarned, Steve Kerr.20. Phoenix SunsIf you love crashing the boards and forcing turnovers, this is your team. Either them or the Carolina Hurricanes.21. Dallas MavericksThis, Cooper Flagg, is why you didn't take Notre Dame's scholarship offer.22. Washington WizardsAnyone who thinks Anthony Davis and Trae Young will return the franchise to the glory days of Elvin Hayes and Phil Chenier is a reflecting fool.23. Utah JazzDarryn Peterson, Ace Bailey, Isaiah Collier, Keyonte George ... all with college eligibility remaining (George's depends on the NCAA's latest legal skirmish). Gotta believe this is Lane Kiffin's favorite team.24. Memphis GrizzliesThe Ja Morant-Jaren Jackson Jr. era didn't exactly match that of Michael Conley-Marc Gasol, but what's next could be a whole lot uglier. Good luck, Cam Boozer.25. Los Angeles Clippers.Poor Tyronn Lue. You telling me old pal LeBron couldn't get him a job in Philly as a coach's-challenge advisor or, at the very least, a caddie?26. Chicago BullsThey were the only team with serious money to spend in the offseason and the best they could do was Norman Powell. Seriously, the NBA thinks it has made progress on the tanking epidemic?27. New Orleans PelicansWhich team will finish the most spots ahead of their initial Power Ranking? That's easy. The one that acquires Zion Williamson.28. Milwaukee BucksPublic perception says they belong down here. Maybe lower. My perception says: Take a look around. This year's basement is littered with losers who'll enjoy beating up on each other.29. Brooklyn NetsYes, they avoid the distinction of being No. 30. Their first win of the season. It might be a while before they get a second.30. Sacramento KingsPopular exchange this winter ... Kings diehard: There's a purple light in the sky; we must have won. Former Kings diehard: That's Hurricane Fisher, you idiot. Take cover!

Knicks face tall task in NBA championship repeat bid

Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks say they're starting from scratch as they aim for an elusive NBA championship repeat with the San Antonio Spurs spearheading a host of rivals as the 2026 season tips off on Tuesday."We just have to find a way to turn the page and move on," NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Brunson said as the Knicks began their preparations in September three months after ending the storied franchise's 53-year title drought with an epic defeat of San Antonio.The Knicks return their starting five, but a sour note has already been sounded in the pre-season as star center Karl-Anthony Towns said he was "extremely disappointed" by the Knicks' public announcement that they were pausing contract extension talks with him and Josh Hart.Additionally, no team has won back-to-back titles since the Golden State Warriors in 2018, and Victor Wembanyama's Spurs are just one of the clubs tipped to keep it that way.The Oklahoma City Thunder, led by two-time reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, are eager to reassert themselves after the Spurs ended their title repeat bid in the Western Conference finals.Closer to home in the Eastern Conference the Knicks will contend with a retooled Philadelphia 76ers squad now featuring all-time leading scorer LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, who earned Finals MVP honors with the Boston Celtics in 2024.Four-time champion James, still a force at 41, agreed to slash his salary in his quest for a fifth ring.Along with Brown he'll team with former MVP big man Joel Embiid, All-NBA point guard Tyrese Maxey and 21-year-old phenom VJ Edgecombe.The 76ers will be out to make an early statement when they take on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, part of a three-game opening day slate.The Miami Heat have also added star power in the shape of two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo, who led Milwaukee to the crown in 2021, arrived from the Bucks in a blockbuster trade and could form a lethal partnership with Bam Adebayo -- who poured in 83 points in one game last season.But nowhere are the expectations higher than in San Antonio. The Knicks were still celebrating their Finals victory when Wembanyama started counting the days to the 2027 championship series.San Antonio used the disappointment of their 2013 Finals loss to Miami to fuel their run to the 2014 title, and Wembanyama says the current Spurs squad is determined to bounce back in the same way. SPURS EYE SUMMIT"We're fighting for the top spot of the mountain," says the towering French center, who reached his first NBA Finals in only his third season.At just 22 Wembanyama is a bona fide star. He was the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year and finished third in MVP voting. An abundance of other talented players at coach Mitch Johnson's disposal includes Dylan Harper, who emerged as a consistent threat at the rim in the playoffs after being limited by injuries in the regular season.The annual pre-season survey of league general managers saw the Spurs tipped to take it all.Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder expect to have something to say about that.Oklahoma City took the Spurs to seven games in last season's Western Conference finals despite the injury struggles of key offensive contributors Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell during the series.With Williams and Mitchell healthy the Thunder are poised to maintain their offensive efficiency while All-Star big man Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein return to anchor the league's best defense.The Minnesota Timberwolves, who reached the Western Conference finals in 2024 and 2025, are counting on the arrival of LaMelo Ball to team with Anthony Edwards to ramp up their challenge to the Spurs and Thunder.In Los Angeles, Slovenian star Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves spearhead the new-look Lakers, aiming to forge a new identity after the departure of James in free agency.

Ten-man Spurs rescue draw at Man Utd, Arsenal survive Leeds scare

Ten-man Tottenham salvaged a 1-1 against fellow strugglers Manchester United thanks to Dominic Solanke's last-gasp leveller, while Arsenal got back on track as the champions survived a scare to beat Leeds 2-1 on Saturday.In a clash dubbed 'El Sackicko' given the scrutiny on both managers, Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 73rd minute at Old Trafford. Mbeumo punished sloppy Tottenham marking to fire home from an acute angle after Matheus Cunha's pass picked him out in the penalty area.Tottenham looked doomed when Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting United defender Luke Shaw in a brawl five minutes after United's opener. But Solanke came to Tottenham's rescue in the final moments when he evaded United defender Lisandro Martinez to head in Sandro Tonali's cross.It was a dramatic finale to a scrappy encounter in keeping with the problems gripping two underachieving teams. Tottenham sit third bottom of the table and remain winless after losing three of their first six league games.United are languishing in 12th place with only one league so far this season. Roberto De Zerbi saved Tottenham from relegation on the final day of last term after taking charge late in the campaign.But despite spending over £300mn ($429mn) on new signings in the close-season, his men look no better this season. United were more conservative in the transfer market as they looked to build on last season's impressive third-place finish.That decision looks to have backfired as Carrick struggles to get the best out of an inconsistent squad. After a shock 3-0 defeat at Brighton before the three-week international break, Arsenal were in danger of a second successive loss when they fell behind at the Emirates Stadium.James Justin fired Leeds ahead in the 55th minute after Arsenal failed to clear Gabriel Gudmundsson's cross. But Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori found the cure when he converted Ben White's header from close-range in the 62nd minute.Arsenal showcased their strength in depth as substitute Bruno Guimaraes drilled the winner from the edge of the area just six minutes after coming on. Guimaraes' first goal at the Emirates since his close-season move from Newcastle made it five wins from six league matches for the Gunners.The north London club sit in second place behind crisis-hit Manchester City on goal difference. City travel to Liverpool on Sunday for their first match since being found guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules."We weren't pleased against Brighton and today was an opportunity to put that right. We certainly reacted in the manner we expected," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said.At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's blistering start paved the way for a 5-1 rout of Bournemouth as the Blues won for the first time in four league matches. Jordan Henderson gave Xabi Alonso's team the perfect start when the veteran midfielder curled home after just 68 seconds to claim his first goal for Chelsea.The Blues struck again in the third minute as Morgan Rogers's drive deflected into the net off Bournemouth defender Antonio Silva. Chelsea were on target just one minute after the interval through Joao Pedro's clinical finish from Pedro Neto's pass.Evanilson got one back for Bournemouth in the 51st minute, deflecting in Moises Caicedo's miscued clearance as Chelsea's run without a league clean sheet extended to 22 matches. But Joao Pedro put the result beyond doubt, poking in from close-range in the 67th minute for his fifth goal this season.England midfielder Henderson, 36, bagged his second in the 70th minute with a fierce free-kick, taking free-scoring Chelsea to 23 goals in just eight games in all competitions this term."We signed him for everything and if he is able to score two beauties like today we are more than happy for him," Alonso said. Aston Villa's troubled start continued with a disappointing 2-2 home draw against fourth-placed Brentford. Ipswich beat winless Fulham 2-1 at Portman Road, while ten-man Brighton won 2-0 at Sunderland to cement their hold on third place.

Ten-man Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-1 in Sydney

Brazil striker Richarlison scored a 90th-minute winner and club record signing Sandro Tonali got his first goal as 10-man Tottenham beat London rivals Chelsea 2-1 in a feisty pre-season friendly in Sydney on Saturday.Both sides fielded strong line-ups and Spurs struck first on 19 minutes through Tonali's deflected strike before Estevao levelled the scores barely two minutes later.Tottenham defender Kevin Danso was given a straight red card just three minutes after coming off the bench at the break for bringing down Joao Pedro, with Chelsea dominating proceedings in the second half.But in front of 80,363 fans at Stadium Australia, they failed to capitalise and Spurs stunned them with a late winner.The loss means new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will head to Hong Kong for a clash with Juventus on Wednesday on the back of his first defeat, following a 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers last week.The Spaniard has overseen a string of high-profile signings since being appointed, headlined by Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as he bids to rejuvenate the club after their disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season.Spurs, who fared even worse, coming 17th to narrowly miss relegation, have also been on a spending spree with Matheus Fernandes arriving from West Ham and Tonali from Newcastle.They fly home after a 2-0 win over Auckland FC and 1-1 draw with Sydney FC.Most of Chelsea's close-season signings have yet to link up with the squad, including Rogers.But right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta, got his first minutes while Cole Palmer and Estevao started after a slew of youngsters were used against Western Sydney Wanderers.Tottenham midfielder Fernandes, who missed the Sydney game with "fatigue in his calf muscle", was again absent, as was James Maddison with a "small problem". But Tonali made his maiden start along with fellow new recruit Andy Robertson.After a cagey start, tempers flared when Conor Gallagher hacked down Chelsea's Dario Essugo in the 10th minute with players pushing and shoving each other. Gallagher was shown a yellow card and Essugo continued.Spurs broke the deadlock after a nice break down the right from Manor Solomon, who fed Tonali on the edge of the box with his shot taking a deflection.But it was a short-lived lead as Estevao headed home at the far post after Romeo Lavia broke free from midfield and they went to the break at 1-1 with Spurs having the better half.Danso's brain-fade allowed Chelsea to dominate the second-half with Estevao rattling the crossbar among a slew of chances.But, in a worry for Alonso, they failed to make the most of the extra man and Spurs stole their thunder when Richarlison side-footed home at the death.

The New York Knicks, fueled by a sensational 45 points from Jalen Brunson, rallied again to beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 and win their first NBA title in 53 years on Saturday.The Knicks won the best-of-seven championship series 4-1, denying Victor Wembanyama and his young Spurs teammates on their home floor to lift the trophy for the first time since 1973.The Knicks, who recovered from 29 points down in game four to produce the biggest comeback in Finals history, erased a double-digit deficit to win for the fourth time in the series.They trailed by 16 in the second quarter and were down by 10 early in the fourth, but Brunson wouldn't let them lose."I've got no words," Brunson said after setting a Knicks record for points in a Finals game, surpassing Willis Reed's 38 in game three of the team's 1970 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers."I don't know what I'm feeling," added Brunson, who was named Finals Most Valuable Player. "I'm in awe. Whenever someone counts us out, we find a way to come back and do something about it."French star Wembanyama scored 19 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked five shots and rookie Dylan Harper scored 25 points off the bench for San Antonio.But once again the Spurs team that vanquished the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals were unable to hold off the crafty and determined Knicks.The win marked the final chapter of a dramatic playoff run which had captivated New York, with tens of thousands of long-suffering fans packing neighborhood watch parties throughout the Big Apple as the team inched towards a first title in more than half a century.Within moments of clinching victory on Saturday, the Empire State Building was lit up in the Knicks' signature orange and blue colors, as raucous celebrations erupted outside the team's Madison Square Garden home.There was a boisterous blue and orange-clad contingent cheering them on at the Spurs' Frost Bank Center as well, where the celebrities on the sidelines included not only longtime Knicks fans but also Britain's Prince Harry, who sat with NBA commissioner Adam Silver.Mikal Bridges scored 14 points and Josh Hart added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks. Karl-Anthony Towns scored just two points before fouling out in the fourth quarter but pulled down 10 rebounds and came up with three steals and a blocked shot.Fouled on a three-pointer, Brunson made all three free-throws to put the Knicks up 86-85 with 3:40 left to play.It was their first lead since the opening minutes and they wouldn't trail again. Game four hero OG Anunoby drove for a dunk that made it 88-85 and after the Spurs knotted it at 88-88 Brunson put New York back in front with a driving basket and the Knicks held on. 'We weren't ready'With their backs against the wall the Spurs were locked in defensively from the opening tip-off. Wembanyama set the tone, blocking three shots in the first quarter as the Spurs powered to a 23-13 lead, holding the Knicks to their fewest points in any quarter this post-season.Wembanyama tied a Finals record with five blocks in the first half and drilled a three-pointer that pushed the Spurs lead to 16 early in the second period.But the Knicks were heating up, cutting the deficit to three before Devin Vassell's fadeaway basket at the buzzer sent the Spurs into the interval with a 42-37 lead.San Antonio quickly rebuilt a double-digit lead, but Brunson and the gritty Knicks wouldn't let them get away."We weren't ready to win an NBA championship," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "The better team won. We did a lot of good things, and we didn't finish the job. That's what it is."
