His Excellency the President of Asian Athletics Association Dahlan Jaman Al Hamad stressed the importance of implementing the Athletics for Talented Students Program in schools, describing it as an important step toward identifying athletic talent at an early age and developing their abilities in accordance with scientific and technical principles, which would contribute to preparing a new generation of athletes capable of representing the Asian continent and achieving success in the future.In a special interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), His Excellency said the program focuses on identifying and nurturing athletics talent in schools, given the importance of the sport and its connection to many fundamental skills that underpin other sports. He noted that implementing the program would broaden the base of athletics participants and help uncover more promising talents.Al Hamad also revealed that the Asian Athletics Association has adopted specialized programs to educate and train school staff and prepare them practically to implement the talent program. He explained that the primary objective is to support talented children, cultivate their passion for athletics, and develop their abilities through technical and scientific support, thereby paving the way for the emergence of new champions in the future.He added that the Asian Athletics Association believes that talent and champions can be discovered in all parts of the continent whenever they are provided with appropriate support and nurturing. Accordingly, the Association is working to train coaches to identify talent, while encouraging children to participate in various athletics events and develop their abilities.The President of the Asian Athletics Association explained that dividing the continent into five regions would enhance opportunities to implement the program in a larger number of countries. He highlighted the role of national federations in promoting the program, as well as the enthusiasm shown by several federations to implement it.In this regard, he pointed to the welcome extended by the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the program and its readiness to implement it in the coming period, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, and the Timor-Leste Athletics Federation.Al Hamad affirmed that the Asian continent is rich in human resources and athletic talent, and that discovering and developing more of these talents depends on providing appropriate programs and continuously preparing qualified personnel capable of nurturing them.In a related context, the President of the Asian Athletics Association attributed the outstanding performances of the continent’s male and female athletes at the World Athletics Championships and Diamond League Meetings to the ongoing efforts of national federations to prepare athletes according to scientific principles, with the aim of improving their performance and achieving more successes and medals.He added that the Asian Athletics Association monitors the activities of national federations and tracks results and records achieved at various competitions. He affirmed that the Association will continue supporting federations across the five regions in hosting and participating in championships, raising the technical level of male and female athletes, and further developing athletics across the continent.He noted that the Association has introduced a number of competitions for different age groups and disciplines, including the Asian U23 Championships, which was recently held in China, as well as field-event championships covering disciplines such as throwing and jumping. These competitions achieved success during 2026, alongside a number of other championships included in the Association’s calendar for the upcoming season. 

FIFA announced imposing sanctions against several players involved in the violence that followed the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, which ended with Argentina losing to Spain 1-0.  In a statement, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee revealed that it had suspended Argentine players Leandro Paredes for 10 international matches and fined him USD 90,000, Nahuel Molina for seven matches and fined him USD 90,000, Thiago Almada for one match and fined him USD 30,000, and team administrator Roberto Ayala for three matches and fined him USD 30,000. Spanish player Pablo Martin Paes Gavira, known as "Gavi," was also suspended for one match and fined USD 30,000.  The Argentine Football Association was also fined USD 321,000 for violating FIFA's disciplinary rules regarding the use of a sporting event for unsportsmanlike conduct, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by its fans. However, the association announced it would appeal the suspensions and fines.  The chaos erupted when Leandro Paredes grabbed Spanish player Gavi by the neck and pulled him to the ground while holding his shirt, sparking a brawl between players of the two teams.

England's bid to strengthen their grip on the first Test against Pakistan was halted by bad weather as rain delayed the scheduled 1000 GMT start of the second day's play at Headingley on Thursday. The hosts were well-placed at 112-2, 59 runs behind, after skittling out Pakistan for just 171 in their first innings on Wednesday. This is England's first Test match since the international retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and the sacking of fellow Bazball architect Brendon McCullum as their red-ball coach. Joe Root, at the start of his second stint as full-time England captain, was 37 not out, with Jordan Cox -- replacing the injured Jacob Bethell at number three -- unbeaten on 23. England's strong position was mainly down to pacemen Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue, who shared all 10 Pakistan wickets between them after Root won the toss in the first of this three-match series. Recalled seamer Robinson became the first man to take a wicket with the first ball of a Test series in England on his way to an impressive return of 5-51 in 18 overs that included four of Pakistan's top five batsmen. No bowler who has played Test cricket for England has taken more Test wickets at a better average than Robinson (88 at 21.25). Tongue finished with 5-46 as Pakistan, missing injured captain Babar Azam, collapsed with only Abdullah Shafique (61) and Imam-ul-Haq (42) offering much resistance while sharing a third-wicket partnership of 91. England have won just two of their last 10 Tests, while it is 30 years since Pakistan last won a Test series in England. 

The General Assembly of Al Rayyan Club today elected HE Sheikh Al-Qaqa'a bin Hamad Al-Thani as club president until 2030, with Ali Salem Afifa elected vice president.The election took place during the ordinary General Assembly meeting, which was held with the required quorum and attended by representatives of the Ministry of Sports and Youth and active club members.The General Assembly discussed the Board of Directors' report on sporting activities for the 2025-2026 season. Members praised the club's success in football, including winning the Gulf Champions League title for the first time in its history, as well as its achievements in other sports. The General Assembly also approved the minutes of the previous meeting and endorsed the sporting activities plan for the upcoming season.Al Rayyan finished last season in third place in the Qatar Stars League (Doha Bank Stars League), qualifying for the AFC Champions League Two.The club will begin its new season against Lusail Club on Thursday in the opening round of the league. Al Rayyan will also compete in Group C of the AFC Champions League Two alongside Saudi Arabia's Al Taawoun, Jordan's Al Faisaly, and Oman's Al Nahda.

As part of the State of Qatar's preparations to host the FIVB Volleyball Men's U-17 World Championship from Aug. 19-29, 2026, the organizing committee convened a coordination meeting to follow up on the latest updates regarding these preparations.The meeting, held virtually, was chaired by President of the Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) Ali Ghanem Al Kuwari, with members of the supervising committees in attendance.The meeting took stock of several matters pertaining to the organizational, technical, media and logistical preparations to ensure all committees remain focused ahead of the launch.As such, Al Kuwari hailed the tremendous efforts of the committee members and tournament workers, emphasizing the importance of constant cooperation in the spirit of teamwork and exerting utmost efforts to ensure a successful global championship in an image that aligns with the State of Qatar's stature and capability of hosting and organizing major global sporting tournaments.He urged all workers to steadfastly continue their collaboration throughout the upcoming phase so as to help achieve the intended goals of this tournament and showcase a superb experience to teams, participating delegations, guests and spectators. 

Novak Djokovic suffered from punishing heat and humidity on Saturday but made a match of it before falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Thiago Tirante in what could be the Serb's last appearance at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters. The second-round battle lasted for more than two and a half hours, and it proved too much for the 24-time Grand Slam champion who was playing his first match since he lost to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semi-finals more than a month ago. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev, the French Open champion who fell to Sinner in the Wimbledon final, was more fortunate, squeezing out an opening 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cameron Norrie in a match that took two hours and 45 minutes and ended at 2:15 am. Britain's Norrie has now lost all eight of his matches against the German, winner of the Cincinnati title five years ago who is hoping a return to Ohio will help him shake off an abrupt exit in Canada last week. Norrie had wrapped up the opening set before Zverev began to find his footing to level the match. Norrie saved six break points in a 12-minute game to begin the deciding set but was broken twice as Zverev advanced. "I needed to get a match rhythm," Zverev said. "The confidence was not there after Canada. "The first set was not great, but the other two were at a high level and I'm happy about that." Djokovic, who claimed the last of his three Cincinnati titles in 2023, claimed the opening set against Argentina's Tirante with little fuss.But the sweltering afternoon temperatures took a toll. "It was a combination of the heat and humidity, all those things," he said. "Everything involved makes it worse." Djokovic won a brutal 18-minute third game of the second, saving four break points over nine deuces. But he was bent over in distress between several points points and even dropped to his hands and knees after one particularly grueling exchange. Djokovic took a medical timeout after that game, with the physio and then a doctor coming on court to assist with assessments and ice towels.After Tirante took the second set both players cooled off in the locker room. Slightly revived, Djokovic set the pace again in the deciding set. But it all went wrong in the ninth game, when Djokovic saved three break points before getting it wrong on a drop shot to bring up a fourth break chance that his opponent converted. Tirante clinched the biggest win of his career in the next game as Djokovic again failed to land a drop shot on match point. The Serb, who must now try to regroup before the US Open starts on August 30, admitted he might have played his last match in Cincy. "It looks like I won't be back, unfortunately to play here," he said. Tirante called the win the best of his career. "I managed the nerves of playing a legend like Novak. It was all so much pressure." - 'Focused' Eala advances - In the WTA draw, Philippines sensation Alexandra Eala advanced to the third round 6-1, 3-0 as injured Elena-Gabriela Ruse quit their match during a weather delay. The Romanian had received treatment on her right ankle just before play was halted by a thunderstorm, Ruse pulling the plug during the delay. Eala, the emerging WTA star who captured her first WTA title in Washington this month, will next play ninth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova, who beat Turk Zeynep Sonmez 6-2, 6-3. "I was playing well and feeling really focused," Eala said. "I tried to stay in the zone. "A retirement is not the way you want to end a match," she added. "Injuries are not fun." Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska advanced 6-2, 6-2 over Spain's Cristina Bucsa. Wimbledon winner Linda Noskova followed suit with her 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Britain's Katie Boulter. There was heartbreak for Payton Stearns, who grew up just blocks from the tennis center. She lost 7-6 (9/7), 1-6, 7-5 to Dane Clara Tauson who played through back pain but rallied from 4-1 down in the final set to win.str/bb

Eritrean-born German Amanal Petros and Finland's Alisa Vainio won the men and women's marathons at the European championships in Birmingham on Sunday. Petros, the Olympic silver medallist, claimed victory in a championship record of 2hr 09min 11sec, beating by 40sec Belgian Koen Naert's previous best, set in Berlin in 2018. Italy's Pietro Riva, who took European silver in the half-marathon in Rome two years ago, claimed silver in 2:09.18, just 3sec ahead of Ethiopian-born Israeli Gashau Ayale. Vainio, who finished fifth at last year's world champs in Tokyo, clocked a dominant winning time of 2:22.26, her long solo effort beating by almost three minutes the previous championship record set by France's Christelle Daunay in Zurich in 2014. Hungary took silver through Lili Anna Vindics-Toth, in a personal best of 2:27:21, while Britain's Abbie Donnelly picked up bronze (2:27:33).  Britain topped the podium in the women's team event ahead of Italy and Spain. 

Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu on Sunday backed New Delhi to deliver a successful world championships, dismissing concerns over marauding monkeys and bothersome birds. The showpiece returns to India after 17 years when the action begins on Monday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. At the India Open in January at the same venue a monkey was spotted in the stands while bird droppings and debris from a nest disrupted play.This time monkey whisperers -- men who scare off rhesus macaques by imitating the calls of the larger langurs -- have been hired to keep the troublesome primates at bay. "I really appreciate their effort for doing it," Sindhu told reporters in response to a question on hiring a team of "monkey wallahs". "I have come yesterday and played today, we have had really really good sessions out there," said Sindhu, 31, an Olympic silver and bronze medallist."Everything is comfortable and everything is good, from the washrooms to the people out here. They have put in all the efforts to make this happen."The 2019 world champion said the efforts of the organisers have ensured "that this will be one of the greatest world championships"."Being an Indian I can proudly say that we are fortunate and happy to play here at the home ground." Sindhu arrives at the tournament in top form after winning the Japan Open last month, ending a two-year wait for a major title."Definitely, after winning the Japan Open that gave me a lot of boost and lot of confidence," said Sindhu. "Looking forward for the world championships to start and since it's happening in India, really excited."A long-time standard-bearer for Indian badminton, Sindhu said her motivation remained as strong as ever despite more than a decade playing at elite level. "The hunger towards the game hasn't changed. I know it is in me and I can still do it," she said.Sindhu is seeded ninth and faces Ireland's Sophia Noble in the first round.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Saturday announced that Spanish forward Ferran Torres is joining the club's squad, coming from FC Barcelona.In a statement, PSG noted that Torres has signed with the Club until 2031 and that he will wear the number 9 shirt.The former Manchester City player joined FC Barcelona in 2022, making 207 appearances for the club and scoring 65 goals.During his time at FC Barcelona, Torres won three LaLiga titles, as well as the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup twice.

The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most successful teams in NBA history, are being sold to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and investor Joshua Kushner in a deal valued at a reported $12.5bn. The sale announced on Wednesday would mark a record-breaking valuation for a North American sports franchise and comes only about a year after billionaire Mark Walter agreed to buy a controlling interest in the team in a then-record $10bn deal. Kushner is the brother of Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law. "As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world," Kushner and Iger said in a statement. "We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans and the city of Los Angeles." Walter's purchase, reported in June last year, ended the Buss family's 46-year reign over the NBA giants. The Lakers have won 17 NBA championships, second only to the Boston Celtics. The team has been home to some of the league's biggest superstars including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O'Neal and the late Kobe Bryant. LeBron James, the NBA's all-time scoring leader, just left the squad for the Philadelphia 76ers after spending eight years and winning one title with the Lakers. The team is now moving forward with a lineup spearheaded by 27-year-old Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic, who posted on X that he was eager to meet the Lakers' new owners. "I've gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise," Doncic said in his post. "I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together." The sale still requires approval from the NBA's board of governors. Jeanie Buss had continued to serve as the Lakers' governor after the club was sold to Walter in a deal that further expanded the sports portfolio of his TWG Global holding company. Walter also owns Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers and a stake in English Premier League club Chelsea. His acquisition of the Lakers had marked the end of an era in the NBA, whose modern popularity owes much to the franchise's 1980s heyday. However, Walter is currently under federal investigation for possible tax fraud involving his insurance businesses. "Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life - an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family," Walter said in a statement. Kushner, founder of the Thrive Capital investment firm, previously held a stake in the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies and will have to divest his current ownership stake in the league's Miami Heat. He had also been touted as a primary investor in FIFA President Gianni Infantino's now-abandoned plan to open the World Cup to private investment, which roiled global football in recent weeks. Iger stepped down as CEO of Disney in March, more than three years after beginning his second stint at the head of the entertainment giant, having been brought back to right the ship after what was viewed as a challenging few years for the company under Bob Chapek. The veteran businessman had originally helmed the parks-to-movies conglomerate between 2005 and 2020, overseeing an expansion that brought mega-franchises like "Star Wars" into the Disney stable, making himself one of Hollywood's most indispensable executives. The period saw a huge cash injection into theme parks, which remain a jewel in the company's crown, helping to push up the share price fivefold. He and his wife, Willow Bay, purchased a controlling interest in the National Women's Soccer League's Angel City FC in 2024. Lakers legend Magic Johnson, a former part-owner of the team and past president of basketball operations, welcomed the deal in an X post. "I want to congratulate my good friend Bob Iger and Josh Kushner on their purchase of the Los Angeles Lakers!" Johnson wrote. "Laker fans, you couldn't have two better owners. I've known Bob personally for over 40 years - he has always loved the Lakers and basketball and he will bring championships back to LA."
