Vaibhav Sooryavanshi "can't just walk straight into the team", India captain Shreyas Iyer said Wednesday, after calls for the teenage sensation to be unleashed for the T20 series against New Zealand starting in Christchurch this week.The 15-year-old Sooryavanshi made his international debut for India in July but has been used sparingly against top opponents despite his glittering Indian Premier League form.India landed in New Zealand on Tuesday, two days before they begin their 40-day tour including five T20s, five one-day internationals and two Test matches.It marks 100 years of sporting ties between the two nations."He has many more years ahead to get opportunities," Iyer said when asked about the teenager's role in the squad."It's not as if he can just walk straight into the team right now because our openers have been scoring consistently and also won us the World Cup."Sooryavanshi has taken the cricketing world by storm after making his IPL debut aged 14 years and 23 days in 2025.Nine days later he scored his first IPL century.In eight T20 internationals Sooryavanshi is averaging just over 30 at a strike rate of 186, below his IPL average of 44 and strike rate of nearly 229.Since July Sooryavanshi's rivals for India's opening spot, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, have averaged 25 and 30 respectively, at strike rates of 172 and 200.Iyer said Sooryavanshi would learn plenty from the tour, with or without game time."Look at it this way: coming overseas like this will give him a fair idea of how the game plays on these particular wickets, so next time when he comes he will be very well prepared for these conditions."New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said he was aware of Sooryavanshi's talents from playing in the IPL but pointed to the power of India's whole lineup."I think he has a huge part to play for India, whether it's in this series or in the future," Santner said."If he does get a crack guys have found it quite hard to stop him, but we've got some plans for him."Santner said conditions would be seam friendly in the opening match at Hagley Oval.India would have to get used to some unfamiliar conditions as they start the series, he said."Temperature-wise, you know, we've always when we've gone to India, it's hot, it's humid," Santner said."Here tomorrow night could be the flip side for India, could be a little bit cold, maybe windy, some cold hands."New Zealand are without Will O'Rourke, Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes for the T20 series but will be able to lean on the power hitting of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert at the top of the order.India recalled seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar after a four-year absence while Jasprit Bumrah was rested as part of workload management after he played a key part in the team's recent Asian Games gold medal in Japan. 

New Zealand have done their homework on India prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and expect their home conditions will challenge the 15-year-old sensation in the Twenty20 series starting on Thursday, paceman Jacob Duffy said. Sooryavanshi has lit up world cricket with his power-hitting, breaking a string of records in the Indian Premier League before becoming India's youngest international in the men's game with his debut in the T20 series in England in July. After a slow start against England, the teenage opener became the youngest player to score a half-century in men's international cricket when he clobbered an 18-ball fifty against Zimbabwe. He recently won an Asian Games gold medal in Japan as India swept to the T20 cricket title in Aichi-Nagoya. Duffy said New Zealand had been studying the left-hander in the buildup to the five-match series, which starts at Christchurch's Hagley Oval. "First of all, he's an incredible talent. Obviously, he's taken the IPL by storm and what's amazing, he strikes it so hard but he does it so consistently," Duffy told reporters on Tuesday. "He's striking at 250 (strike-rate) every game and he's not missing out very often. So that's incredible in itself. "I think he played in England, so conditions will be a little bit different for him, so that's obviously one thing for him to be challenged with. "We've certainly had a good scouting session on him and got our plans as to what we want to do to him." India fans will be eager to see what Sooryavanshi can do in New Zealand, where the pitches tend to be seam-friendly. Duffy said he had spoken to Hagley Oval's head groundsman about what to expect from the wicket, hoping that it will not be a batter's paradise like some subcontinent pitches. "He's from Invercargill, so he's promised me a little bit of bounce," said Duffy, who was born in Lumsden, a small town near the South Island city. "As long as it's not Hyderabad, I'm happy." The T20 series is the first part of India's tour, with one-day matches and a two-Test series to follow. Otago bowler Duffy has had a big year, claiming the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal as New Zealand's top player in 2025 and making the final of this year's T20 World Cup in India before winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He made his Test debut last year at the age of 31 but missed the mid-year tour of England and the one-off test against Ireland to be home with his wife for the birth of their first child. The absence from the Test setup has made him doubly keen to tear into India with the red ball ahead of a four-Test tour of Australia. "I've played four Tests in my life. I get up for any Test. There's something special about them," he said. 

India coach Gautam Gambhir said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chance to break into the side after he left the 15-year-old prodigy on the sidelines of their three-match Twenty20 series sweep against Afghanistan.Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson opened for India in the series, with Abhishek scoring the third-fastest century in T20 internationals in Thursday's 127-run victory in New Delhi.Sooryavanshi, who was the highest scorer in this year's Indian Premier League, made his international debut against England in July but the top-order batter failed to make an impact as the hosts dominated India in the T20 series.He scored two fifties against Zimbabwe in Harare later that month but has not played for India since."Whether you’re a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old, when you have to wait for your opportunity you have to wait for your opportunity," Gambhir told reporters after the match."We know the kind of talent he has and what he can do, but someone who has been performing for the last two to three years will always be ahead of someone who has just entered the team."Sooryavanshi will travel to Nagoya for India's Asian Games campaign, with a one-off T20 against hosts Japan set for Tuesday before the Asiad quarter-final on September 28."Whenever he gets his run, he will get a longer run as well ... we want competition and talent in the dressing room," Gambhir added.

Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's rise has intensified the battle for places in India's line-up but Sanju Samson, competing with the batting prodigy for the opener's slot, says he relishes the challenge.The 31-year-old hit an attacking 57 to lead India to a series-clinching win over Afghanistan in the second T20 international in New Delhi on Tuesday after being picked in the team ahead of Sooryavanshi.Fast-tracked into the senior team after a stellar IPL season, 15-year-old Sooryavanshi became the youngest cricketer to represent India when he played against England at Manchester in a T20 international in July.The left-hander was also India's highest scorer with 151 runs in the team's 3-0 sweep against hosts Zimbabwe in July.But in the first two matches against Afghanistan, India opted for Samson to partner another swashbuckling opener, Abhishek Sharma.Samson scored 10 in the opener but responded with a 22-ball blitz in the second match as India chased down their target of 160 with seven wickets and 31 balls to spare."We may be competitors to the outside world, but we are a team and we are playing for a country and we want to win the game first," Samson told reporters after the victory. BE READY FOR OWN OPPORTUNITY"We just have to be ready for our own opportunity. We can't sulk that, 'Oh, I didn't get (the chance), or why did they give it to him?' Those kind of mindsets don't work here," he said."It is a very challenging place to be in... I know how hard these decisions are (for the management) when everyone has been performing really well."Samson made his T20 debut in 2015 but was not always the first choice of selectors due to his patchy batting form on the international stage.But he came of age during the T20 World Cup in India in March despite being benched at the start of the tournament.He impressed with the bat in the semi-final and final with attacking half-centuries as India defended their crown.Samson said he switches off his internet to screen out external noise over selection choices."I try to turn off the Wi-Fi," he told reporters."But sometimes the Wi-Fi comes back on and I see the comments of the senior players."At first, it feels bad. I am not a machine. We are not robots that it wouldn't affect us at all. It definitely matters, and you kind of get a bit affected."India have an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match Afghanistan series, with the final match on Thursday. 

Cricketers at this month's Asian Games in Japan will have better accommodation than athletes from many other sports, the head of Japanese cricket said Wednesday, after concerns were raised about a lack of five-star hotels for players.A Sri Lankan official said this week that some of Asia's top teams had raised doubts over facilities and accommodation at the Games, which are taking place in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from September 19.Cricket is a minor sport in Japan and games will be played at a new purpose-built ground with reports of tents serving as dressing rooms and distant washroom facilities.There is no dedicated athletes' village at the Games, with organisers instead relying on cabins in a cruise ship, rooms in temporary wooden containers and hotels.Organisers said last week that accommodation was already stretched to the limit after the number of Asian Games athletes ballooned to 17,000.By comparison there were around 11,000 at the 2024 Paris Olympics.The cricket tournament is being run by the Asian Games organising committee in collaboration with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).Naoki Alex Miyaji, the CEO of the Japan Cricket Association, told AFP that the two bodies had been discussing accommodation options "for a long time"."The participating teams in cricket are being offered hotel accommodation," Miyaji said on Wednesday."Many other sports are being accommodated in much more limited facilities such as a cruise ship or container hotels." Matches will be played at Korogi Sports ParkMatches will be played at Korogi Sports Park, a converted baseball field that is a 40-minute train ride away from central Nagoya.Media reports in India said the country's cricket board was unhappy with arrangements and might send a second-string squad after originally naming 15 players led by Shreyas Iyer and including 15-year-old rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.Miyaji said that Japanese organisers "only had 17 months to prepare and had to start from scratch" for cricket at the Games.He said they had been working "to ensure that the best facilities are provided within the limited timeline and facility restrictions"."Despite being temporary, the facilities will provide as comfortable a space as possible for the players and officials," he said.Miyaji said the pitch, which is being prepared by the curator of the 35,000-capacity Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka, would be of a high standard."From what I have seen, the playing surface and field will be the best seen in cricket's inclusion in the Asian Games," he added.
