India's cricket board on Tuesday named Smriti Mandhana as the new captain of the women's team after Harmanpreet Kaur resigned from the job earlier in the day.The 37-year-old Kaur, who recently led India to an Asian Games gold medal in Japan, had captained the team to their first women's global title at last year's ODI World Cup.Mandhana, 30, has been the backbone of India's batting in recent years and played a key part in the Asian Games victory, including a stellar 45-ball 79 in the final against Sri Lanka."To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour," Mandhana said in a statement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)."Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply."Mandhana, a swashbuckling left-handed opener, has played nine Tests, 120 ODIs and 179 T20s for India since her debut in the white-ball format in 2013."The BCCI has full confidence in Smriti and I am sure she will approach this role with the same commitment and professionalism that she has shown throughout her career," BCCI president Mithun Manhas said.Earlier Kaur stepped down from the role through a social media post on Tuesday morning."This is not an easy decision," Kaur wrote."It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life," she said."I have given everything I had to this team and to Indian women's cricket -- my blood, my sweat, my time, and many times, a part of my own game and personal ambitions."However, Kaur indicated she would continue to play."Captaincy ends. The journey continues," she said.Kaur's role as leader was first questioned after India's second successive group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup in June.Her leadership also came up for discussion at a review meeting held by the BCCI on Monday, local media reports said.Kaur led India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is. 

Smriti Mandhana became the highest run-scorer in women's T20 international cricket on Sunday as India crushed Bangladesh by 114 runs in the Asian Games semi-finals with fellow opener Shafali Verma hitting her maiden hundred. Mandhana scored 37 off 19 balls with five fours and two sixes in her side's 195-4 in 20 overs at the Korogi Athletic Park ground in Nagoya.In the process she went past New Zealand all-rounder Suzie Bates's 4,758 runs at the top of the all-time list to stand on 4,788 runs from 171 innings. Verma was the star on the day for India, scoring 100 not out off 49 balls with three fours and nine sixes -- her maiden T20 international century.Verma reached her hundred off the final ball of the 20 overs, and was clearly emotional as she took off her helmet and raised her bat in celebration towards her applauding teammates on the boundary. India then skittled Bangladesh for 81 in 15.4 overs.India will meet Sri Lanka in Tuesday's final after they earlier chased down Pakistan's 177-4 with more than two overs to spare. Sri Lanka raced to 178-2 off 17.5 overs largely thanks to captain Chamari Athapaththu's sparkling unbeaten 83 off 50 balls, laced with six sixes and seven fours.Pakistan will play Bangladesh for the bronze medal, also on Tuesday.

India's batting superstar Smriti Mandhana has become the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket after smashing a record-breaking 124 off 64 balls in the Women's Asia Cup in Dubai.Mandhana overtook former India skipper Mithali Raj, who had been the top international scorer with 10,868 international runs, during her match-winning innings against Hong Kong on Thursday.It also sealed India's place in the semi-finals of the T20 tournament.The 30-year-old also became the leading century-maker in women's international cricket, with 18 hundreds across formats, overtaking Australia's Meg Lanning and South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt, who have 17 each."It's just the start," the India vice-captain said after the game.Mandhana has two centuries each in Tests and T20Is, and 14 in one-day internationals."Until I was batting, I didn't know what record, because I didn't know what's the exact runs," Mandhana said, according to Indian sports outlet Sportstar."A very good day for Indian cricket, I would say," she added.She also heaped praise on Mithali Raj as a "legend and a role model".Mandhana's knock featured 14 fours and seven sixes as India piled up 193-5 before bowling out Hong Kong for 56 to secure a 137-run victory.
