Kohli hits 93 as India edge New Zealand in ODI opener

Virat Kohli hit 93 to help India chase down 301 in a tense four-wicket win over New Zealand in the first one-day international Sunday.The in-form Kohli struck his 77th ODI half-century but missed out on a ton as India slipped from 234-2 to 242-5 before they reached their target with six balls to spare in Vadodara.Skipper Shubman Gill made 56 in a 118-run second wicket stand with Kohli, who shared another strong partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who made 49.Late cameos by Harshit Rana (29) and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, who made an unbeaten 29 including the winning six, secured an Indian lead in the three-match series 1-0.New Zealand pace spearhead Kyle Jamieson stood out with figures of 4-41.Kohli led the chase as he went past Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (28,016 runs) to become the second leading run-scorer in international cricket, behind fellow Indian Sachin Tendulkar (34,357).The 37-year-old Kohli only plays the ODI format after he and fellow stalwart Rohit Sharma, 38, retired from T20 and Test cricket.Rohit started strongly in his brisk 26 before he fell to New Zealand Jamieson.The packed crowd welcomed Kohli with a huge roar as the star batter joined Gill at the crease to take the attack to the opposition.He was ably supported by Gill, who has returned from an injury and a snub by the selectors from the T20 World Cup squad.Gill started slowly before he gained pace to raise his 16th ODI fifty but soon fell to rookie leg-spinner Adithya Ashok.Kohli was denied a ton by Jamieson, who got the batter caught out at extra cover. The former captain walked back to a standing ovation.Jamieson dismissed Ravindra Jadeja, for four, in the same over and in the next bowled Iyer to raise New Zealand's hopes of a turnaround.India's troubles increased with injury to Washington Sundar, who suffered a reported side strain while bowling his off-spin and came out to bat at number eight.Earlier, New Zealand posted 300-8 after Daryl Mitchell hit 84 to defy the Indian bowlers after the hosts elected to field first.Openers Devon Conway, who made 56, and Henry Nicholls (62) put on 117 but New Zealand suffered from a lack of major partnerships after their big opening stand.Pace bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Rana and Praisdh Krishna took two wickets each.The second match is on Wednesday in Rajkot.The series will be followed by five T20s ahead of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka between February 7 and March 8.

India's Gill calls it 'destiny' after shock T20 World Cup snub

Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill Saturday said he respected the Indian selectors' shock decision to drop him from the squad for the T20 World Cup on home soil, calling it "destiny".The 26-year-old will lead the one-day team in three matches against New Zealand starting today in Vadodara before many of India's players head into a five-match T20 series.Indian selectors surprisingly axed the batsman from the T20 squad after he scored only 291 runs in his past 15 matches in the game's shortest format at an average of 24.25."Firstly, it is my belief that in my life, I am where I am supposed to be. Whatever is written in my destiny, I will have it," Gill told reporters."As a player I want to win games for my team, but having said that, I respect the selectors' decision. I wish the T20 team the very best. I hope that they win the World Cup."India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, are the defending champions in the T20 World Cup which takes place in India and Sri Lanka between February 7 and March 8.Before that, India will play 50-over matches against New Zealand with the spotlight on stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.Kohli and Rohit play only the ODI format since retiring from T20s, following the World Cup triumph in Barbados in 2024, and Test cricket.Gill said the presence of the two greats was invaluable for any captain."Definitely when you have these two people in your team, it makes your life a lot easier," said Gill."And whenever you are in a tough situation, they have been in those kind of situations and conditions many times in their life, so you can always go to them and see how they are thinking or what they would do."And that piece of information is very valuable for any captain."The 37-year-old Kohli and Rohit, 38, have been in top batting form in international and domestic cricket, scoring centuries and runs to turn back the clock.Meanwhile, New Zealand's ODI captain Michael Bracewell is keen to make the most of the Indian conditions ahead of the T20 World Cup."It's always fun coming over and playing here," said Bracewell, a left-hand batter and off-spinner."A month before the T20 World Cup, getting used to these conditions. You won't be in the same venue but in general, getting used to the nature of the surfaces that they have."Bracewell said he will name the playing XI at the toss but confirmed fast bowler Kristian Clarke will make his international debut in the ODI opener.

Shubman Gill (centre) will lead India in a Test series on home soil for the first tomorrow when a two-match kicks off against the West Indies.

India favourites for Tests against West Indies

Shubman Gill’s India will be heavy favourites when they play a home two-Test series starting Thursday against a West Indies side struggling with injuries and a pale shadow of the team that once dominated cricket. The Caribbean team have endured years of decline and their T20 team registered a new low this week with a series defeat to non-Test playing nation Nepal. In the longest format the West Indies were swept 3-0 at home by Australia this year and were bowled out for 27 in the third match - the second-lowest score in Test history. The debacle prompted West Indies cricket boss Kishore Shallow to call for an emergency meeting involving past greats.West Indies, led by Roston Chase, have been forced into late changes after injuries ruled out pace bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph ahead of the first Test in Ahmedabad. They have been replaced by the uncapped pair of seamer Johann Layne and left-arm quick Jediah Blades, who has only played white-ball cricket for the West Indies.Jayden Seales is the only pace bowler in an inexperienced attack who has played more than 10 Tests. In contrast, India are full of confidence after securing a thrilling 2-2 draw in their five-Test series in England which ended in August. The series was Gill’s first as captain and the first without greats Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have all retired. The tour was a personal triumph for the new skipper, who scored 754 runs, the most ever by an Indian batsman in a series in England.Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will make a quick turnaround from playing in the T20 Asia Cup, where he took two wickets in Sunday’s final win in Dubai over Pakistan.Bumrah’s workload is being managed carefully after an injury in Australia earlier this year.He was rested for two of the five Tests in England, where fellow quick Mohammed Siraj was the leading bowler with 23 wickets. For the West Indies, Chase is joined in the spin bowling department by Jomel Warrican and Khary Pierre, who is set for a long-awaited Test debut.“I always want to do more... hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard,” said Pierre, 34, after a domestic season where he claimed 41 wickets.“I leave everything on the cricket field - blood, sweat, tears - and that was my trademark this season and it paid off.”The second and final Test will be played in New Delhi from October 10-14.SQUADSIndia (from): Shubman Gill (capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, Axar Patel, N.
