Asani's last-gasp strike sinks Al Shamal

Jasir Asani’s stoppage time strike earned Esteghlal a 1-0 win over Al Shamal in their AFC Champions League Elite match in Basra on Tuesday.The victory meant the Iran club rebounded in style from last week’s defeat to Shabab Al Ahli while there was disappointment for Qatar’s Al Shamal, who had gone into the tie buoyant after defeating Al Hilal last week.Al Shamal made just one change from the starting lineup that had stunned Al Hilal 3-1, while Esteghlal opted for two changes following their 2-0 defeat to Shabab Al Ahli.Saman Fallah warmed the gloves of Al Shamal goalkeeper Babacar Seck from distance in the sixth minute while at the other end, Habib Far Abbasi pulled off a fine save to tip Baghdad Bounedjah’s curling effort over the bar.The Algerian forward was within shooting range again three minutes later when Mohamed Ben Romdhane laid the ball nicely at the top of the box but Bounedjah’s effort went straight at Abbasi.The Esteghlal goalkeeper continued to frustrate Al Shamal, denying Bounedjah again from inside the box following a swift counter-attack.The Iranian side threatened in the closing stages, with Jaloliddin Masharipov floating a fine cross to Saleh Hardani, whose volley narrowly went wide of the left post.Esteghlal started the second half aggressively and almost broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, with the move starting with Amirmohammad Razzaghinia dispossessing Riyad Mahrez in his own half.The midfielder then embarked on a swift sprint, exchanging passes with Saeid Saharkhizan, who laid the ball for Jasir Assani who relayed it to Razzaghinia whose shot was denied by a diving Babacar Seck.Seck kept his side in the game when he saved Esmaeil Gholizadeh’s close range shot moments later, before a deflected clearance by Federico Bais in the 75th minute redirected the ball back to Asani, but Seck pulled off another fine save to foil the Albanian.Asani made amends in the second minute of stoppage time after Mohammadhossein Eslami threaded a neat pass to the forward to slot the ball past a sprawling Seck.There was more woe for Al Shamal as Youssouf Sabaly was sent off after receiving his second yellow card two minutes later as Esteghal stayed in sight of the Round of 16.

Sadd sweep aside 10-man Shamal to go top of QSL

Al Sadd stormed to the top of the Qatar Stars League with a commanding 4-1 victory over 10-man Al Shamal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Friday, keeping them firmly in their bid for a fourth consecutive title.The defending champions took full advantage of their numerical superiority after the break, scoring three goals to seal a convincing win and move one point clear of Al Rayyan, who face Al Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday.Giovani Henrique gave Sadd an early lead in the 11th minute before Al Shamal suffered a major setback when Mohamed Ben Romdhane was sent off for violent conduct in the 45th minute. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Shamal managed to draw level in first-half stoppage time through Riyad Mahrez, who converted a penalty to give his side renewed hope.However, Sadd took control after the interval. Mohamed Camara restored the champions' lead in the 62nd minute before Qatar international Akram Afif extended their advantage six minutes later. Former Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino completed the scoring in the 80th minute to seal Sadd's sixth victory in eight league matches.The result lifted Sadd to 18 points, one ahead of second-placed Rayyan, who have a game in hand. Al Duhail are third with 15 points, while Arabi occupy fourth place on 12 points ahead of their meeting with the league leaders.Sadd entered the match looking to build on their 4-0 victory over Al Shahaniya last week after suffering two successive league defeats. They had also earned their first point in the AFC Champions League Elite with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia's Al Qadsiah.Shamal, meanwhile, were hoping to carry their impressive 3-1 victory over Saudi giants Al Hilal in the continental competition into the domestic league. However, the defeat left David Prats' side on nine points in eighth place after a fourth consecutive league match without a win. **media[511255]**Earlier, Al Gharafa beat Qatar SC 2-0 at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, with Yacine Brahimi scoring twice in the closing stages.After a goalless first half, the Algerian midfielder broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with a long-range effort following a pass from Dame Traore. He sealed the victory in the 88th minute, dribbling past Nasir Peer Baksh inside the box before beating the goalkeeper.The win took Al Gharafa to seventh place with nine points, while Qatar SC remained on six after suffering their fourth defeat of the season.At Al Khor Stadium, Al Ahli edged Al Shahania 2-1 to claim their third league victory and move to 11 points. Ghanem al-Minhali put Al Ahli ahead in the 57th minute with a powerful strike from inside the box. Al Shahania appeared to have rescued a point when Abdoulaye Traore equalised in the 85th minute, but their hopes were dashed two minutes later.Driss Fettouhi restored Al Ahli's lead in the 87th minute, turning in a floating assist from Benjamin Bourigeaud to secure all three points. The victory was Al Ahli's first under returning head coach Nebojsa Jovovic, who previously coached the club from 2019 to 2023.The eighth round continues On Saturday, with leaders Al Sadd now watching closely as Rayyan seek to reclaim top spot against Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium. Al Sailiya face Lusail, while Al Duhail take on Al Wakrah in the other fixtures. Saturday's fixtures: Al Sailiya vs Lusail at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium | 5:15pm; Al Arabi vs Al Rayyan at Al Thumama Stadium | 7:30pm; Al Duhail vs Al Wakrah at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium | 7:30pm

Mahrez inspires Shamal to historic win over Hilal

Riyad Mahrez starred for Al Shamal with a sparkling show as the tournament debutants registered a historic 3-1 win against Saudi giants Al Hilal in the AFC Champions League Elite match at Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday.The victory was the first for the Qatari side after draws in their earlier two matches as they moved up to sixth in the West standings on five points, one behind Al Hilal. Al Hilal, meanwhile, lost in the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite for the first time since the tournament was revamped.There were uncertainties for Al Hilal at the start of the match as head coach Simone Inzaghi’s decision to keep Kalidou Koulibaly, Ollie Watkins and Yassine Bounou on the bench gave Al Shamal the invitation to go on the attack.It took the home side only eight minutes to slice Al Hilal wide open with incisive passing from their own half that saw Riyad Mahrez relay the ball to Ben Romdhane, who then set up Wesley Said for a low strike that beat Mohammed al-Owais.Al Hilal looked to respond but had to wait till the 31st minute for the equaliser, Kader Meite held off his marker to release the ball to Salem al-Dawsari, who then sent Theo Hernandez surging up the left flank before arriving into the box to tap in the left-back’s return pass.Al Shamal missed a great chance to go back in front shortly after when Baghdad Bounedjah lifted the ball over al-Owais but Ali Lajami got the slightest of touches to disrupt Mahrez’s follow-up header which hit the post.Al Shamal made a blistering start to the second half and restored their lead within three minutes. Tiago Silva flicked a pass to Mahrez on the right and the Algerian wizard picked out Bounedjah at the near post to steer the ball home from close range.It got even better for the home side with Mahrez, a two-time AFC Champions League Elite winner with Al Ahli Saudi FC, swinging in a pinpoint free-kick to Romdhane at the back post to guide the ball past Al Owais.Inzaghi sent on Koulibaly, Watkins and Nasser al-Dawsari as the Italian tactician looked to rescue the tie but the best Al Hilal could muster was a Yusuf Akcicek shot that was straight at Babacar Seck as the four-time Asian champions succumbed to their first defeat in the League Stage.

Shamal target winning return as Lusail seek to bounce back

Fifth placed Al Shamal will look to return to winning ways when they take on ninth placed Lusail in the Qatar Stars League at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium on Saturday.Al Shamal coach David Prats expects a tough test against a Lusail side he rates highly, but the Spaniard is determined to secure three points and get his team back on track in the league.“We are expecting a tough match against a very good team that has outstanding players, plays in a distinctive way, and has an identity on the field,” Prats said at the pre-match press conference.“Lusail is one of the teams I like in the Qatari league this season because their performance model is very good, but all of that does not prevent us from going into the match with only one goal, which is to win and collect the three points in order to get back to winning ways.”Al Shamal are keen to put their recent league setback against Al Duhail behind them after suffering a difficult defeat. Prats, however, believes his team showed encouraging signs in their subsequent AFC Champions League campaign against Iran’s Tractor Sazi.“We are very excited about the opportunity to return to winning ways, especially after the difficult moments we experienced in our last league match against Al Duhail,” he said.“We succeeded in getting back on track after the Al Duhail match in the league, by facing Tractor of Iran in the AFC Champions League, during which we performed very well, and what we want is to continue in the same direction.”Lusail, meanwhile, will be eager to respond after their 1-0 defeat to Al Shahania in the previous round. Coach Emanuel Mesquita said his players had prepared well for the encounter and were determined to claim maximum points.“We are preparing for the upcoming Al Shamal match with high focus, and we have a strong desire to secure the three points and build on the continuous work the players have been putting in during training and matches,” Mesquita said.“We have worked well this week, focusing on the technical and tactical aspects we need for this encounter. The players have shown great commitment during training sessions, and they are fully prepared to face Al Shamal in the next round.”Mesquita acknowledged the quality of their opponents and anticipated a closely contested match, with Lusail aiming to deliver a strong performance and improve their position in the standings.“The North is an organized team with outstanding players, and we expect a tough and difficult match for both teams. Our goal is to deliver a good performance on the field and come out with a positive result that strengthens our position in the standings,” he said.Meanwhile, bottom-placed Al Sailiya will seek their first points of the season when they face Qatar SC on Saturday.Al Sailiya have lost all five of their matches and sit 12th in the standings without a point. Coach Mirghani al-Zein said the team needed to unite and rebuild confidence after a difficult run of results.He stressed that the priority was to lift the players' spirits, address their frustration and restore the focus required to turn their season around.Al-Zein expects a challenging encounter against Qatar SC, adding that their recent results do not reflect the true strength of the opposition.Qatar SC coach Rashid al-Kubaisi, for his part, is targeting victory and the three points. He expressed confidence in his players' ability to deliver, while acknowledging that the team had faced difficult circumstances in recent weeks.

Mahrez joins Qatar's Al Shamal as a free agent

Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has joined Al Shamal on a free transfer after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, the Qatar Stars League club announced on Wednesday.The 35-year-old, who announced his international retirement following this year's World Cup, departed Jeddah-based club Al Ahli after a decorated three-year stint. "His left foot made history and our ambition is writing the next chapter. Riyad Mahrez in Al Shamal colours," the Qatari club posted on X.He joined Al Shamal’s training sessions as David Prats’ side prepare for their upcoming domestic and continental commitments, including the AFC Champions League. Mahrez signed his contract in the presence of Al Shamal football department head Meshaal Al Ali after arriving in Doha last week to complete the move.Al Shamal are fifth in the Stars League standings with eight points from five games. They finished runners-up last season and are seeking to strengthen their squad following a cruciate ligament injury to Morocco international Mohamed Rabie Hrimat.Mahrez made his professional breakthrough at French side Le Havre before he joined Leicester City in 2014, where he became a central figure in the English club's fairytale Premier League triumph in 2016.The 2016 African Footballer of the Year later featured for Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League before moving to Al Ahli. Mahrez helped Al Ahli clinch back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles in 2025 and 2026.The winger, who was born in France, played a key role in Algeria's successful campaign to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and helped the team reach the last 32 at this year's World Cup. He scored 40 times in 119 international appearances.

Gharafa lose to Esteghlal as Shamal settle for draw against Tractor

Qatar’s Al Gharafa and Al Shamal endured contrasting fortunes in the AFC Champions League Elite on Monday. Gharafa suffered a 2-1 defeat to Iran’s Esteghlal at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, while Shamal were held to a goalless draw by Tractor in Muscat.Ferjani Sassi’s 48th-minute goal cancelled out a stunning strike by Jasir Asani in the first half before Hossein Goudarzi’s 60th-minute winner ensured Esteghlal finished with another three points.Both sides took their time to settle, with Esteghlal edging possession and Saman Fallah’s off-tangent header off a corner in the 12th minute their first look at goal.Another corner at the opposing end in the 21st minute gave the home side their chance to threaten, with Seydou Sano rising high in the box but nodding wide of the left post.There were no shots on target in the first half hour, but Asani made sure that the Iran Pro League side’s first strike in the 37th minute mattered when he came down the right and unleashed a spectacular 20-yard shot that dipped beyond Ahmad Kone’s fingertips and into the top left.Kone made a superb save from Saeid Saharkhizan four minutes into stoppage time while Habib Abbasi denied Al Gharafa’s first on-target attempts through Adam Ounas and Abdulrahman Faiz Al Rashidi to close the half.The Qatar outfit’s strong start to the second half paid off three minutes in when Sassi emerged from a pack of bodies inside the Esteghlal box to side-foot past Abbasi for the equaliser.Esteghlal, however, took advantage of slack goalkeeping by Kone in the 60th minute to regain the lead when Goudarzi was given too much space on the left and struck from range, his shot bouncing off the custodian’s palms and rolling into the bottom left.Saharkhizan saw his shot deflect off midfielder Ayoub Aloui in front of goal in the 79th minute while Abbasi made himself big to block Alaa Hasan’s point-blank effort five minutes later and Rustamjon Ashurnatov cleared off the line from Aloui to consign Al Gharafa to their second defeat.In Muscat, Tractor FC and Al Shamal SC played out a goalless draw. The stalemate sees Iran’s Tractor picking up their first point in the league Stage while Al Shamal settled for a second consecutive draw in their debut campaign.It was a cagey start with neither team able to gain a foothold on the game although Al Shamal enjoyed a lot more possession.In the 15th minute, there was a half-chance for the visitors when Ben Romdhane collected the ball on the left flank and tried to find Federico Bais in the box, only for Tractor goalkeeper Parsa Jafari to read the situation.As the first half progressed, Tractor started to get a grip on the game but their best effort was only a Shojae Khalilzadeh header in the 35th minute from Farshad Faraji’s long throw which bounced harmlessly into the grasp of Babacar Seck.The intensity improved after the interval as both teams went in search of the breakthrough.Yousouf Sabaly set up Bais for a rasping shot from outside the box in the 53rd minute which Jafari had to react fast to push over the bar.At the other end, Seck produced a brilliant double stop four minutes later, a strong right hand to parry Mohammd Naderi’s fierce drive before putting his body on the line to stop Danial Esmaelifar’s point-blank follow-up.Al Shamal had chances to snatch a late winner with Romdhane stopped by a superb Faraji sliding challenge, then Michael Termanini drove into the box only to drag his shot wide and in the end, both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Al Shamal, the runners-up last season will be keen to return to winning ways after being held 1-1 by Al Wakrah in their previous outing.

Algerian star Mahrez arrives in Qatar ahead of move to Al Shamal

Al Shamal have made a major statement of intent by bringing in Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, with the 35-year-old arriving in Doha on Monday to complete his move to the Qatar Stars League club.Mahrez is set to join Al Shamal on a free transfer and will undergo his medical at Aspetar on Tuesday before signing a contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the season.The move comes as Al Shamal look to build on their runners-up finish last season and mount a serious challenge for a maiden league title. The club are also seeking to strengthen their campaign in the AFC Champions League Elite.Former Manchester City winger is expected take the place of Morocco international Mohamed Rabie Hrimat, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Al Shamal’s second-round match against Al Gharafa.For Al Shamal, the arrival of a player with Mahrez’s experience represents a significant addition to their attacking options. The Algerian has won major honours in England and Saudi Arabia and brings more than a decade of top-level experience.Mahrez began his professional career with Quimper in 2009 before moving to Le Havre. His breakthrough came at Leicester City, where he became one of the leading figures in the club’s remarkable Premier League title triumph in 2016.He subsequently spent five seasons with Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles and helping Pep Guardiola’s side claim their first Champions League crown in 2023. Mahrez made 236 appearances for City, scoring 78 goals and providing 59 assists.In 2023, he moved to Saudi Arabia to join Al Ahli in a deal worth around $40m. During his time with the Jeddah club, he played 122 matches, scoring 37 goals and registering 50 assists, while also helping Al Ahli win the AFC Champions League Elite.Mahrez has been equally influential for Algeria. He has scored 40 goals in 199 international appearances and was part of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2019. He has also featured for Algeria at the 2014 and 2026 World Cups.

Sadd stunned by Esteghlal as Shamal denied famous win by Ittihad

Al Sadd endured a disappointing start to their AFC Champions League Elite campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Esteghlal of Iran at Basra International Stadium in Iraq on Monday, while Al Shamal were denied a famous victory by a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad at Al Bayt Stadium.Jasir Asani capitalised on a defensive error to fire Esteghlal ahead in the ninth minute before Saeid Saharkhizan extended their lead two minutes after the break and Esmaeil Gholizadeh sealed the match five minutes into injury time.In a match largely dominated by the 19-time Qatar Stars League champions, Al Sadd side were let down by poor finishing, with only one shot on target and a goal overturned by VAR.Razvan Lucescu’s men made the stronger start but it was Esteghlal who struck the opening blow in the ninth minute when a wayward pass by Claudinho gifted the ball to Asani, who rounded defender Boualem Khoukhi and lashed the ball beyond Meshaal Barsham.The 2011 champions gradually regained their composure, with Roberto Firmino connecting to Hashim Ali’s cross and looping his header over the bar in the 19th minute. The Brazilian then set up Claudinho 10 minutes later but the striker fired just wide of the right post after weaving past the defence.The ever-threatening Firmino’s shot from the edge of the area in the 35th minute forced keeper Habib Abbasi into a diving save as Al Saad pushed forward in search of the equaliser only to be frustrated at the last.A counterattack by the nine-time IR Iran champions in the 42nd minute had Barsham twisting in mid-air to deny a powerful strike by Amir Mohammad Razzaghinia from the edge of the box before Firmino closed the action in the first half by heading wide of the left post.Saharkhizan gave Esteghlal the perfect start to the second half when he latched on to a through ball from Asani two minutes in, evaded a tackle from Paulo Otavio and drilled the ball through Barsham’s legs into the left corner.Al Saad thought they had reduced the scoreline in the 57th minute when Firmino struck from point-blank range but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a handball by Yusuf Abdurisag.Gholizadeh put the match beyond Al Saad’s reach five minutes into stoppage time when he picked up Mohammadhossein Eslami’s cross, snuck in between two defenders and booted the ball past Barsham. Wijnaldum breaks Shamal's heartsAl Shamal, meanwhile, looked set to mark their first appearance in the continental championship with a memorable victory after Baghdad Bounedjah put them ahead in the 63rd minute. However, Georginio Wijnaldum struck with virtually the last kick of the match to earn Al Ittihad a point.Al Shamal, who qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite for the first time with a runners-up finish in the QSL last season, had been forced to defend desperately in the dying moments against the 2004 and 2005 champions and Wijnaldum eventually struck.The visitors had made a positive start with Babacar Seck shovelling Dion Lopy’s early strike from outside the area to partial safety, forcing Musaab Khidir to knock the ball out for a corner while the Al Shamal goalkeeper gathered Ahmed Al Ghamdi’s weak shot soon after.It was the home side that went closest to opening the scoring in the 16th minute when Mohamed Ben Romdhane received possession inside the penalty area from Alex Collado, quickly turning to unleash a rising right-foot shot that clipped the top of the crossbar.Al Shamal hit the frame of the goal again with 12 minutes remaining in the half, Baghdad Bounedjah’s crossing from the right towards the near post from where Wesley Said threw himself at a header that thumped against the woodwork.Steve Bergwijn tested Seck from distance two minutes from the end of the half with a low shot that the Al Shamal goalkeeper was fortunate to push to safety after miss-timing his intervention.Al Shamal’s Callado was denied by Predrag Rajkovic eight minutes after the restart when the Spanish midfielder cut back onto his right foot to shoot towards goal but, by the 63rd minute,Georgin the home side had gone ahead.Bounedjah shuttled possession to Ben Romdhane and, after surging into the penalty area, the Al Shamal captain received a return pass that set him up to fire the ball beyond Rajkovic.Wijnaldum and Bergwijn both went close to pulling Al Ittihad level while Ben Romdhane had the ball in the Al Ittihad net again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.But Wijnaldum calmly stroked in the equaliser from just inside the penalty area in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Bergiwjn’s cutback from the left side to salvage a point for Jens Wissing’s side.
