Lazio moved level on points with Inter Milan at the top of Serie A with a 3-1 win over Monza as pursuers Roma and AC Milan were both held.Ten-man Roma could not keep pace as Donyell Malen's red card overshadowed a 0-0 stalemate in Como to sit two points behind with leaders in third. AC Milan were held 1-1 at Sassuolo to leave them four points adrift of the leaders in fourth.Under Gennaro Gattuso, who has bounced back after his failure at the helm of the Italian national side who missed out on the 2026 World Cup, Lazio continued their strong start to the season.Still unbeaten, the Roman outfit secured a fifth victory in six matches to pull level on 16 points with Inter Milan, who beat Parma 3-0 at the San Siro on Saturday.Their run comes despite ongoing fan protests against owner Claudio Lotito that have left Lazio's home matches sparsely attended amid a stadium boycott.Nuno Tavares gave Lazio a third-minute lead and Gustav Isaksen doubled it midway through the first half. Monza had Lorenzo Lucchesi sent off on 35 minutes for hauling down Tijjani Noslin as he broke through on goal, but the 16th-placed visitors rattled Lazio after the break, pulling a goal back and coming close to equalising before conceding a third goal in the closing stages.Ruben Amorim's Milan maintained their unbeaten start but drew for the third time in their last four league games. Matteo Gabbia went off injured early on with the breakthrough not coming until the 63rd minute when Luka Modric slipped in Adrien Rabiot to fire home a powerful finish.Sassuolo responded immediately as Mike Maignan was forced into a double save, and the Rossoneri's lead lasted just five minutes before substitute Cas Odenthal turned in the equaliser in a crowded box from a corner.Roma continued their unbeaten start against Como but could only pick up a point in the first goalless draw of the Serie A season. The dismissal of league top scorer Malen for a dangerous tackle early in the second half forced Roma to scale back their ambitions after a bright start.Neither team could find the breakthrough in a clash between two sides widely regarded as dark horses for the title.Roma had the better of the first half as Lorenzo Pellegrini, making his first league start in six months, curled a shot off the post after Paulo Dybala's weak finish failed to trouble Jean Butez.But Malen's reckless lunge eight minutes into the second half proved costly as the Roma striker, who has scored six league goals this season, was shown a straight red card.Como were unable to find a way past Pierluigi Gollini as the Roma goalkeeper kept a clean sheet on his first league appearance for more than two years following an injury to first-choice Mile Svilar.Both sides are in Champions League action on Wednesday, when Roma host Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico and Como travel to Feyenoord. Bologna picked up their first win of the season by beating Lecce 2-1.

Italian defender Franco Baresi, the captain of AC Milan in the 1980s and 1990s when they won three European Cups and six Italian league titles, has died at the age of 66, the club announced on Friday."Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the Club's DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is," AC Milan, of which Baresi became honorary vice-president in 2020, wrote on X."We must be strong and gather every bit of energy, even at this saddest of times."We lost Franco only a few months after his last public appearance in a packed San Siro, at the Milan Winter Olympics opening ceremony, an event on the world stage he helped make unforgettable."In memory of Franco, we stand united, knowing he'll guide and push us throughout our Rossoneri journey. Forever. Because Baresi is forever."A World Cup winner with Italy in 1982 and a finalist at the 1994 World Cup, Baresi is regarded as one of the greatest sweepers in football history.AC Milan did not specify the cause of Baresi's death. He had undergone surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule."It will take me a little time to get all my strength back," he said shortly afterwards.Born in Lombardy in May 1960, Baresi joined AC Milan's youth teams in 1974, before moving up to the first team in 1978 ahead of his 18th birthday.He then became a starter at 18 and captain at 22, noticed for his technique, anticipation and tackling skills, as well as his notable leadership qualities.Baresi went on to form, alongside Paolo Maldini, Mauro Tassotti and Alessandro Costacurta, a defence feared by every striker in Europe.He retired in 1997 after 719 matches with the Rossoneri, a record surpassed only by Maldini."Today I feel the same thing as to when for one reason or another you were unable to be on the pitch with us," said Maldini."How are we going to cope without our captain?" 'Greatest of defenders'Gianluigi Buffon, Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning goalkeeper, said his Serie A debut for Parma had stayed with him."November 19, 1995, I made my debut in Serie A against Milan," he wrote."I was 17... to be on the pitch against such a champion was an unbelievable experience."In addition to his red and black club jersey, Baresi wore the blue of the Nazionale 81 times.But after a World Cup title from the bench in 1982, he did not make the trip to Mexico in 1986 following a disagreement with the national coach.Penalty shootouts, in the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup and then in the final in 1994, shattered his hopes of another triumph.A Diego Maradona-led Argentina were their nemesis in the 1990 semi-final, but the late Argentinian superstar had paid him the greatest tribute when his club Napoli beat Milan 3-0 in a Serie A game the year before.He asked for Baresi's shirt and donned it in a post-match interview."He is the greatest of defenders. It is a memory I will keep for the rest of my life," he said.Baresi performed various roles for Milan in his retirement, the only time he spent away from them was a brief spell as technical director of English club Fulham."Ultimately, it was only a month: before the end of August, I was already back in Milan," he told Gazzetta dello Sport in 2025."I realised it wasn't the place for me, and in the end, I didn't even start working. The umbilical cord with Milan was never broken."However, he was never a man to feature in the gossip pages preferring to spend time abroad for the Milan Foundation which he found educational and rewarding."With Fondazione Milan, I witnessed poverty in Kenya and Morocco," he told Gazzetta."In Lebanon, I played football in the street with children. These are emotions that have completed me." 

AC Milan announced they had sacked coach Massimiliano Allegri and a host of senior club management after missing out on next season's Champions League.The 19-time Serie A winners lost 2-1 at home to Cagliari on Sunday in the final game of the league game season denying them a return to European football's leading competition.Allegri, 58, was appointed last May, returning to the northern club 11 years following his first tenure ended, after they also failed to qualify for the Champions League. Former striker and now RedBird advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic keeps his position despite being heavily criticised by the seven-time European Cup winners' fans."After the disappointment of last year, the mandate ownership set for the club was to return to the Champions League and to establish a foundation for winning consistently at the top of Serie A," AC Milan's owners RedBird capital said."It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations. Effective immediately, we are parting ways with CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, head coach Massimiliano Allegri and technical director Geoffrey Moncada."We thank each one for their hard work and dedication to AC Milan during their respective tenures. Further announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course - with the goal to be ready and well prepared for the next season," they added.Milan finished one point below Como in the fourth and final Champions League spot after the loss to lowly Cagliari and Cesc Fabregas' side's win at Cremonese. They had started the day in third.They spent more than half of the season in the top two of the table before an end of season slump which included three losses, a draw and just one win. After the Cagliari shock former Juve boss Allegri had said nothing about his future at the San Siro."For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto," RedBird said. "The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night's disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure," they added.Milan will start the new Serie A season on the weekend of August 22-23 and will also feature in the second-tier Europa League. Red Bird will now look for a fifth man in charge since they took over the club in 2024.Italian media have linked Antonio Conte, who has just left Napoli and Atalanta's Raffaele Palladino, with the Milan job.
