Reigning champions Celtic returned to the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win away to Motherwell on Sunday.Celtic's victory at Fir Park sent them two points ahead of Rangers after their Glasgow rivals won 3-1 at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday."We maybe just needed to get back to basics, the things that make the club tick and the team go strong," veteran boss Martin O'Neill, 74, told Sky Sports."All of those particular things I thought were in evidence."Fir Park was the scene for a dramatic late win that helped Celtic claim last season's title but this campaign has been far from plain sailing.Sunday's success came after a fractious three-week international break that saw club owner Dermot Desmond subjected to a tennis-ball protest by irate fans at St Andrews golf course last weekend, as well as uncertainty over the future of O'Neill."When you've lost a couple of big matches, you have to look inwards and see what you can improve on," said O'Neill."Of course, in some of the matches, there was a lot we could improve on."I think essentially it was back to what makes us strong. Pressing and the ability to play the ball when we had it."Camilo Duran's early goal helped improve the mood among the Hoops' faithful before Celtic doubled their lead through Benjamin Nygren in the 58th minute as they made it seven wins in eight league matches this term.Nevertheless, banners and chants criticising Desmond were seen and heard at Motherwell. But it was home fans who were seen leaving Fir Park early as their uninspiring side suffered a fourth successive defeat. In Sunday's other Premiership match, St Johnstone climbed into the top six with a 1-0 win away to Aberdeen.Josh Fowler's successful early penalty was the visitors' lone shot on target but a sound defensive effort enabled St Johnstone to leave Pittodrie with all three points.
