University of Doha for Science and Technology and Alfardan Exchange, launch the “FinTech Stars” Competition. The competition aims to support innovation and entrepreneurship and encourage students to develop practical solutions that contribute to advancing the fintech sector in Qatar. This initiative supports young national talent and strengthens their contribution to shaping the future of the digital financial sector, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy, and Qatar Central Bank’s FinTech Strategy 2024–2030. The initiative also aligns with the vision of the Qatar Financial Centre to transform Doha into a leading global financial and commercial hub, while supporting development and economic diversity through a world-class business, legal, and regulatory environment. The launch event was held at the University of Doha for Science and Technology, in the presence of representatives from the University, and Alfardan Exchange. The competition targets students enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking and Financial Technology and provides them with an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge through practical projects that reflect the latest digital trends in the fintech sector. The competition begins with students forming teams, with each team given two months to prepare and develop its fintech project. Final projects are scheduled to be submitted on 7 November 2026, ahead of presentations to a specialized evaluation committee comprising representatives from the University of Doha for Science and Technology, Qatar Financial Centre, Alfardan Corporation and the Tariqi Program, Alfardan Exchange, along with a number of specialized parties from the fintech sector, on 18 November 2026. The winning teams will be announced during the competition’s closing ceremony, scheduled for 25 November 2026. The first-place team will receive a cash prize of QAR 50,000, the second-place team QAR 30,000, and the third-place team QAR 15,000, presented by Alfardan Exchange.  Dr. Vincent Mangematin, Dean of the College of Business at the University of Doha for Science and Technology, said: “Hosting the FinTech Stars Competition at the University of Doha for Science and Technology reflects our commitment to providing an applied learning environment that responds to the rapid evolution of the financial technology sector. Initiatives such as this strengthen the connection between academic knowledge and industry practice, while equipping our students with the capabilities to contribute to the development of an innovative and competitive financial sector. As Qatar advances its digital transformation and knowledge-based economy, UDST remains committed to preparing work ready talent that can contribute meaningfully to these national priorities.”  Mr. Bashar Al Waqfi, CEO of Alfardan Exchange, said: “We are proud to launch the FinTech Stars Competition in partnership with the University of Doha for Science and Technology, as it represents a practical step toward empowering the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs in Qatar. Through this initiative, we aim to provide a platform that enables students to develop their ideas and transform them into applicable solutions, supporting the digital transformation of the financial sector and reinforcing the State of Qatar’s position as a leading hub for fintech.” The “FinTech Stars” Competition is expected to contribute to developing students’ practical skills and enabling them to present innovative ideas that support the advancement of digital financial services, further strengthening Qatar’s position as a leading regional fintech hub.

High school students from Qatar and abroad aspiring to pursue careers in medicine were given a glimpse of the profession and campus life through the Medical Minds Online Program (MMOP), a summer initiative organised by Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q). In its second edition, the week-long virtual event brought together 84 students from 50 local, regional, and international high schools. The event is one of WCM-Q's Summer Enrichment Programs, tailored to familiarize pre-college students with the field of medicine and science through interactive sessions conducted by WCM-Q faculty and staff.The program offered by WCM-Q's office of student outreach and educational development provides a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and challenges in the medical field. It targets students who have shown academic excellence in the sciences and mathematics, possess a good foundation in biological sciences and the English language, and have an interest in pursuing a career in medicine.The participants were students entering grades 10, 11, and 12 in the 2026-2027 academic year, and came from various schools across Qatar, while international students joined the sessions from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Oman, Morocco, Kazakhstan, India, Pakistan, Korea, the UK, Canada, and the US. Simulating the WCM-Q student learning experience, participants took part in a variety of live online sessions and self-paced modules covering medical humanities, surgery, anatomy, biology, physics, and careers in medicine. The students received guidance on research skills essential for academic success, building a professional identity in medicine, and the WCM-Q application and admissions process. They were also introduced to Canvas, a learning management system used in educational institutions.Noha Saleh, director of premedical administration, student outreach, and educational development, said: "The MMOP demonstrates our commitment to inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. By providing the students with an authentic introduction to medical education at WCM-Q, we help them better understand the academic journey, the skills required, and the opportunities available in the medical field.” For his part, assistant professor of education in medicine, associate dean for foundation, student outreach Dr Rachid Bendriss said: "Our goal was to give the students a practical preview of what it means to study medicine. We hope this experience empowers them to make informed decisions not only as they pursue their academic and career aspirations.” The closing ceremony was held both virtually and in person, providing students in Qatar with the opportunity to visit WCM-Q. All the students were awarded a certificate of completion.

Qatar's Candidate Training Center has graduated the 15th cohort of its Military Science Diploma program for university graduates during a ceremony held under the patronage of HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al-Thani.The event was attended by HE Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces, Lt Gen (Pilot) Jassim bin Mohammed Al Mannai, along with senior military officials.The nine-month program provided candidates with military training, field exercises, awareness lectures and joint exercises with various armed forces units, aimed at developing their combat and leadership capabilities.At the conclusion of the ceremony, HE the Chief of Staff presented graduation certificates to the participants.Among those attending were Major General (Pilot) Salem Abdullah Al Dosari, Deputy Chief of Staff for Education; Major General (Engineer/Air) Adel Hassan Fakhro, Chief of the Education Authority; Brigadier General (Dr.) Mohammed Abdullah Al Henzab, Commander of the Candidate Training Center, and a number of senior officers from the Qatar Armed Forces.

A Science Café session in Msheireb brought experts, institutions and families together to bridge awareness gaps on autism and learning disabilities, emphasising practical inclusion and shared responsibility across Qatar’s community. Experts and stakeholders gathered at Bin Jelmood House Monday for the second Science Café session of 2026, focusing on neurodevelopmental conditions and the importance of collaboration in building a more inclusive society. The session, titled “Different Abilities, Shared Futures: Disability and Success,” was organised by Msheireb Museums in partnership with Sidra Medicine. It explored autism and learning disabilities through scientific research, education, technology and mental health perspectives. Speaking on the sidelines, Dr Mohamed Tolefat, Director of Clinical and Rehabilitation Services at Shafallah Centre for Persons with Disabilities, highlighted the importance of such platforms in connecting institutions with families and the wider public. “We take care of persons with disabilities from early childhood and early intervention until 21 years old,” he said, noting that services span “different severity and intensity” levels, including autism spectrum disorders. Dr Tolefat stressed that one of the centre’s strengths lies in its integrated model. “All the services are under one umbrella... physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, special education, psychologists and psychiatry, all in one place,” he explained. However, beyond service provision, he underlined the critical role of awareness and collaboration. “We do have awareness programmes throughout the year... for corporations, schools and even tourism areas like hotels,” he said, adding that parents are also supported through direct training and communication channels. Events such as the Science Café, he noted, play a vital role in strengthening these efforts. “We do interact not only with parents but with all the different entities that take care for autism in Qatar... we bridge the gaps and act as a complement to others like Sidra, HMC and the Ministry of Education.” He emphasised that the value of such gatherings lies in shared learning. “It is important for everyone to come together to bridge the gap between themselves and try to learn from each other,” he said. Dr Tolefat added that participants benefit most from practical engagement. “They interact not only theoretically but practically... and come up with inclusive ideas for activities between autism and other children and people in society.” The session forms part of ongoing efforts in Qatar to promote inclusion, encourage dialogue and ensure that awareness translates into meaningful, everyday practices across communities. 

Big names from the worlds of film, technology, music and sports gathered on Saturday in Santa Monica, California for the Breakthrough Prizes, popularly known as the “Oscars of Science.” The awards, co-founded by philanthropists and tech entrepreneurs, recognise the research achievements of leading scientists around the world in three broad categories: Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics and Mathematics. “These are some of the most heroic and inspiring people we get in the world,” actor Edward Norton told AFP. According to the American History X star, it was important to turn out and “to highlight what this kind of work contributes to all of us.” “The US has the most anti-science administration in US history,” the actor said. “It’s always important, but if it was ever especially important, the moment is now.” In the last year, the Trump administration has slashed funding for science, halting projects and devastating workforces. Rock climber Alex Honnold agreed with Norton, adding that he hoped the fluctuations “of the political climate... are short-term compared to the long-term effort required to make these kind of gains in human knowledge.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the collaboration between his company’s artificial intelligence technology and some of the award-winning scientists “is moving things faster and faster, and letting them discover new things and bring them to the world faster than they could before.” “Change this fast is really disorienting. So there will be a lot of big questions that we’ll have to sort through as a society,” Altman told AFP. The Breakthrough Foundation was started by Google co-founder Sergey Brin; Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan; science patrons Julia and Yuri Milner; and Anne Wojcicki, CEO of 23andMe. Six prizes worth $3mn each were presented at the 12th edition of the awards. French mathematician Frank Merle was honoured for his work on nonlinear equations describing the behaviour of waves, fluids and other systems. Merle told AFP the funding is “essential” for science. “Science is one of the foundations of our civilisation,” he said. Hollywood A-listers Ben Affleck, Lily Collins, Robert Downey Jr., Gigi Hadid, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts and her husband, Billy Crudup, also attended the event, alongside public figures like Bill Gates and Paris Hilton. 

Qatar University (QU) has officially entered the space age with the successful launch of its first nanosatellite, QUbeSat1, a milestone that underscores the institution’s growing role in advancing space science, innovation, and hands-on education.The university said Wednesday that the launch represents the culmination of more than a decade of student-driven research and infrastructure development. The nanosatellite project began as a self-funded educational initiative in 2012, later receiving major backing from the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council (QRDI) between 2020 and 2025, along with financial and technical support from Es’hailSat for the manufacturing, testing, and launch phases completed through 2025 and 2026.Designed and built by a multidisciplinary team of Qatar University students, researchers, and academics, QUbeSat1 aims to give young engineers firsthand experience in spacecraft design, operation, and Earth observation. The satellite carries an imaging payload for capturing low-resolution photos of Earth, supported by an Attitude Determination and Control System for in-orbit stability and orientation.Dr Tamer Khattab, the project’s technical lead, said the nanosatellite initiative exemplifies the value of collaboration between students, faculty, and national partners. “This kind of project relies on rigorous planning and coordination,” he explained, adding that partnerships across Qatar have been key to its success.QU emphasised that the launch is only the beginning of a broader long-term effort to develop a series of future nanosatellites, with the goal of strengthening national skills in advanced technologies and contributing to Qatar’s growing space ecosystem.The university’s own ground station — the only academic facility of its kind in Qatar — will handle communications with QUbeSat1 as it undergoes its initial tests and begins imaging operations in orbit in the coming weeks.“This mission will not only expand Qatar’s scientific footprint in space,” Dr Khattab said, “but also build a new generation of homegrown innovators ready to propel the nation into the future.”

Students at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have launched the college’s very first student-led magazine.The Mawj Science Magazine was founded to provide a voice for the student body, foster a spirit of enquiry and scientific interest among students, and share news of groundbreaking innovation in biomedical science and education, a statement said.The inaugural edition of Mawj, which means 'wave' in Arabic, features dozens of articles written by WCM-Q students on a wide range of topics, including the mental health of medical professionals, paediatric epilepsy, how technological advances are redefining medical education, the link between gut-brain health and autism, student research projects investigating the effectiveness of traditional remedies, and accounts of student contributions to medical conferences, among other stories. The online magazine also features articles by WCM-Q faculty.Second-year medical student Ubaida al-Aani is the founder and editor-in-chief of Mawj. Student contributors Sama Ayoub, Noor Numan, Amani Benamor, Batoul Arabi, Sama al-Saffar, and Nisarga Natesha Kumuda penned articles for the launch edition.Faculty member Christine Gaskell, senior teaching specialist in pre-medical education and a PhD student, contributed an article on her research, which explores the biological nexus between obesity and cancer through lifestyle and microbiome pathways.Dr Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, hoped that Mawj will be a great success and provide an extremely valuable platform for collaboration among the thriving community of student researchers, supporting their ambitions to pursue excellence in medicine by continuously advancing the boundaries of research in clinical care, biomedical research and medical education. Mawj Science Magazine can be read at https://mawjmagazine.org/ 

Stars of Science, an initiative hosted at Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), a member of Qatar Foundation, is marking its 17th season, celebrating its evolution from a televised competition into a leading scientific and creative movement that is helping shape the region's innovation ecosystem.Since its launch in 2009, the initiative has supported the development of 55 innovative projects and partnered with hundreds of educational institutions, inspiring thousands of young people to pursue their ideas. Its alumni now play an active role in mentoring new participants, reinforcing the sustainability of the region's innovation cycle.To date, 175 graduates from 18 Arab countries have produced impactful innovations in health technology, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and education.The winner of Season 17, Dr. Laid Dardabou of Algeria, exemplifies the program's legacy. His innovation, ViDa -- a smartwatch system that estimates Vitamin D levels and helps prevent related mental health symptoms -- secured top public votes and earned the judges' praise for its integration of biotechnology and emotional well-being.
