India clung on to beat England by seven runs in a thrilling T20 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai Thursday, despite Jacob Bethell’s superb 105 that put Harry Brook’s side within a whisker of pulling off a record chase. After Sanju Samson’s scintillating 89 laid the platform for India to pile up a massive 253-7, England finished agonisingly short on 246-7 after a brilliant effort masterminded by Bethell. Phil Salt (5), Brook (7) and Jos Buttler (25) fell early to leave England 64-3. But Bethell, aided by partnerships of 77 with Will Jacks (35) and 50 with Sam Curran (18), kept England in the hunt. The left-hander hit seven sixes and eight fours in his 48-ball thrash before his run out in the final over finally allowed India to celebrate in front of 35,000 jubilant fans in Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium. India will face New Zealand in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad as they attempt to become the first team to retain the trophy and the first to win it on home soil. “It’s an unbelievable feeling, going to Ahmedabad for the final, a special feeling for the boys,” said India captain Suryakumar Yadav, who paid tribute to England. “They were always in the game, always in the chase. I was very nervous, I’m glad someone didn’t check my heart rate,” he said, before looking forward to the final. “In India, going for the title, there will be pressure, there will be nerves but the boys will be excited as well,” Suryakumar added. England captain Brook praised the way his side went about attacking a daunting target. “All of our lads should be really proud of the way we played tonight and throughout this competition,” said Brook. The hosts, having been asked to bat by Brook, earlier flayed England’s attack to all parts of the ground, hitting 19 sixes and 18 fours. Samson, who scored 97 not out in the previous match against the West Indies, signalled his intent with a four and six off Jofra Archer’s first over. But he was given a life on 15 when Brook dropped a simple chance at mid-off off Archer. It proved a costly mistake as, helped by some ill-disciplined bowling, Samson raced to his half-century off 26 balls with a huge six as Liam Dawson’s first over was pummelled for 19 runs.“I’ll hold my hands up and say that I made a big mistake there, dropping Samson,” said Brook. “As the old saying goes, catches win matches. At the end of the day, it cost us.” Ishan Kishan put on 97 from 48 balls with Samson for the second wicket before the left-hander holed out to Jacks off Adil Rashid in the 10th over to make it 117-2. Samson powered on until Jacks returned to have him caught by Salt in the deep in the 14th over at which point India were 160-3. “It feels really great,” said Samson after being named player of the match. “I kind of knew that I got some form going from the last game, so I thought I need to continue. Even 250 looked chaseable here and England played really well. All credit goes to how they batted and we really had a great semi-final.” Shivam Dube continued the onslaught with 43 off 25 balls with four sixes before being run out by Brook’s direct hit. Hardik Pandya hit 27 off 12 balls late on and Tilak Varma 21 off seven to take India past the 250 mark. Jacks was the pick of the England bowlers with 2-40 but the wayward Archer was plundered, taking 1-61 off his four overs. BRIEF SCORES: India 253 for 7 (Samson 89, Dube 43, Jacks 2-40) beat England 246 for 7 (Bethell 105, Jacks 35, Pandya 2-38) by seven runs.

India Monday hailed Sanju Samson as a “game-changer” after the opener’s batting masterclass in Kolkata took the defending champions into the T20 World Cup semi-finals. Samson’s unbeaten 97 led India’s chase of 196 against the West Indies in the last Super Eights match to set up a semi-final against England in Mumbai on Thursday. Samson paced his innings to perfection and had more than a billion India fans erupting in joy on Sunday night when he hit Romario Shepherd for a six and four to complete the chase at Eden Gardens. “Handling the final overs well in both innings gave us the edge,” India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar wrote on X. “Sanju Samson’s calm presence at the crease was wonderful to watch. That kind of presence lifts a side. Brilliant effort from everyone. On to the semi-finals!” Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif said: “Sanju Samson the man for India in a do-or-die game. Focus is never on him but he proves to be the game-changer.” The 31-year-old Samson has been in and out of the Indian team and played just one group match against Namibia in the absence of opener Abhishek Sharma. India brought back Samson in their Super Eights match against Zimbabwe to break up the all left-handed opening partnership of Abhishek and Ishan Kishan. India’s media were lavish in their praise for Samson, who saved India from a humiliating early tournament exit on home soil. “Superman Sanju rescues India,” blazed the Times of India. India coach Gautam Gambhir called Samson “world-class”. “We all know how good a player Sanju is and it was all about backing him,” Gambhir told reporters. “Today was a day where he probably showed his true potential.” Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh also hailed Samson, saying it has made all of us proud. He also highlighted India’s ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah’s crucial breakthroughs. In an X post, Harbhajan Singh wrote, “Today @IamSanjuSamson has made all of us proud. Critical breakthroughs by @Jaspritbumrah93 also helped Team India. Congratulations #MenInBlue for the wonderful win. Our hearts stopped several times throughout the match, but all is well that ends well. Happy for #TeamIndia. Best wishes for the ultimate one.” Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan termed Samson’s gritty 97* as the best innings of his career and highlighted his maturity throughout the innings. “The best innings of his career, considering the match situation. The maturity he showed throughout was outstanding. A top-class, match-winning knock from Sanju Samson,” Irfan Pathan wrote in an X post. Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan heaped praises on Samson’s masterclass fifty, saying he stepped up when it mattered most. “@IamSanjuSamson stepped up when it mattered most. Highest score by an Indian in a T20 WC run chase, brilliant effort with the bat, supported by @IamShivamDube’s cameo, and the bowlers led by @Jaspritbumrah93 doing the hard work early. Semi-finals, here we come,” Dhawan wrote in an X post. Former Indian star Suresh Raina hailed India’s clinical performance and labelled Samson’s innings as ‘pure dominance’. “Well played, boys! Clinical performance, unstoppable spirit, and a true champion’s mindset on display. One step closer to glory - let’s bring it home! Pure dominance from @IamSanjuSamson,” Raina wrote in an X post. West Indies veteran seamer Ian Bishop also lauded Samson’s innings, “Respect the name: Sanju Samson!!!” he said according to a report in sports.ndtv.com. Samson, who made his debut in 2015, has played just 60 Twenty20 matches for India since. “I always say, good things happen to good people who wait, who have a lot of patience,” said India captain Suryakumar Yadav. South Africa face New Zealand in the first semi-final tomorrow in Kolkata. The final is in Ahmedabad on Sunday. 

Sanju Samson’s sparkling unbeaten 97 kept alive India’s dream of retaining the T20 World Cup at home as they knocked out the West Indies with a five-wicket win in Kolkata Sunday to set up a semi-final against England. Samson hit 12 fours and four sixes in his superb 50-ball knock in the winner-takes-all final Super Eights match to thrill a capacity 67,000 fans at a pulsating Eden Gardens. After the West Indies smacked an impressive 70 off the last five overs to score 195-4 after being asked to bat, India lost two early wickets but were always up with the required rate. Samson, opening for the second match in succession in this World Cup, led the way. When India slipped to 41-2 Samson was joined by captain Suryakumar Yadav (18) and the pair added 58 for the third wicket. Tilak Varma was next to join Samson and scored 27 off 15 before departing in the 15th over with the score 141-4 and India still needing 55. Samson stood firm and though Hardik Pandya fell for 17 India reached the target with four balls to spare to spark celebrations and fireworks. “It means the whole world to me,” Samson said. “Right from the day I started playing, started dreaming to play for the country, I think this is the day I was waiting for.” Samson said he learned the art of finishing matches “from the greats like Virat Kohli, from Rohit Sharma.” Suryakumar said: “Obviously it’s a great feeling. The way we played, it was a do-or-die game and the boys showed character.” When asked about Samson’s innings, he said: “See I always say good things happen to good people who wait, who have a lot of patience. All his hard work ,what he has been doing behind the doors when he hasn’t been playing, he has got the fruits for it at the perfect stage.” Jason Holder and Rovman Powell earlier put on an unbroken stand of 76 for the fifth wicket to help the West Indies set the defending champions a target of 196 to stay alive. The West Indies sprang a surprise at the top of the order, promoting Test captain Roston Chase to open alongside T20 skipper Shai Hope. That enabled them to bring in an extra spinner, Akeal Hosein, with regular opener Brandon King left out. In their defeat to South Africa last week the West Indies slumped to 83-7 but the new-look opening partnership was more assured. Spinner Varun Chakravarthy got the first breakthrough, bowling Hope for a sluggish 32. Shimron Hetmyer raced to 27 off 12 balls before falling to the faintest of edges off Jasprit Bumrah to make it 102-2. After Chase fell for 40 and Sherfane Rutherford followed, Powell and Holder launched their brutal late assault. Powell finished on 34 not out from 19 balls with two sixes and three fours while Holder was unbeaten on 37 off 22 balls with three sixes and two fours. “Maybe a few short, especially on a chasing ground such as this,” said a disappointed Hope. “Probably could have gone a bit more at the end. Probably could have got more at the start as well,” he added. It could have been better for India but they dropped three regulation catches in a sloppy fielding display, including Chase when he had made just 15. South Africa, the only unbeaten side in the tournament, beat Zimbabwe by five wickets earlier Sunday and will face New Zealand in Kolkata in the first semi-final on Wednesday.The final is in Ahmedabad next Sunday. BRIEF SCORESIndia 199 for 5 (Samson 97*, Tilak 27, Holder 2-38) beat West Indies 195 for 4 (Chase 40, Holder 37*, Bumrah 2-36) by five wickets
