New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso on Monday said Morgan Rogers was "a great signing" who would make the club more competitive and expected the England midfielder to "link really well" with Cole Palmer.The versatile Rogers was signed from Aston Villa last week for £117mn ($157mn), a record for a British player.Alonso said he was "delighted" to lure the 23-year-old to Stamford Bridge ahead of his first match in charge, a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday."It's a great signing. I think that in that position, we needed an important player, and I'm sure that there were not many more better options than Morgan," the Spaniard told reporters."So we are delighted. It means a lot for everyone."The swoop is a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season and missed out on Europe.Alonso will have to find a way to accommodate Rogers, Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and another close-season signing, Geovany Quenda, into his attacking midfield positions."I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well," Alonso said on how Morgan could fit in alongside Palmer. The pair are close friends who have similar playing styles."You need to have a good mix, good stability players, and players that can play with more freedom," Alonso added."And if we get that balance right, and we get those special players in the right positions, with good control, I think that we will be more competitive with the ball and against the ball."Chelsea had reportedly been chasing Rogers for two years and beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions refused to match the eye-watering fee demanded by Villa.His transfer surpassed the previous record fee for a British player set by Manchester City when they signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million earlier this month."I think that one of his best qualities is that he's flexible," Alonso said of Rogers, who is not on their pre-season trip to Australia after helping England to finish third at the World Cup."I think that he can play in that pocket position, close to the striker, close to the turn, but he's played as well on the right. But I think more coming from the left."We (will) play him where he feels he is enjoying his game, that he feels his flow. I'm sure that he will have good connections with the other players that he can have around him."So if we get those connections right, those little associations between them that they look for each other and they connect well, I think that it will be a great step forward in the quality of our game."Chelsea will also play fellow London club Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in Sydney, before flying to Hong Kong for a match against Juventus on August 5.

Stan Wawrinka announced Friday he will throw a farewell party for fans on December 19 in Geneva with former tennis stars Roger Federer and Andy Murray on the card of the "One last backhand" event.The 41-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion said on Instagram that after more than 20 years on tour, it was time for him to hang up his racquet."Before leaving, I wanted to organise one last evening to thank you and say goodbye," said Wawrinka who has fallen out of the top-100."I'm lucky to be able to count on my friends, with whom I've shared so many great moments over the years. Andy Murray, Gael Monfils, and Roger Federer will be there," he said.The Swiss player won 16 titles during his career -- including the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. He reached a career-high world number three ranking in 2014.Wawrinka is preparing to play in his final Wimbledon starting next week thanks to a wildcard granted by organisers of the tournament where he reached the quarter-finals twice. 

Roger Federer will return to the U.S. Open this year for an exhibition match, ‌seven years after his last ​appearance at ‌the Grand Slam in 2019, ‌the event ⁠organizers ‌said on Monday.Federer, ‌who is the only player to ⁠win five consecutive U.S. Open titles, will headline an event titled "Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York” on August 25. The 44-year-old won 20 Grand Slam titles - ​the first man to reach that milestone - and claimed 103 career titles before ‌retiring in 2022. ⁠The Swiss ​brought the curtain down after ​24 years on the tour at the Laver Cup in London.He will be joined by 2003 U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick, as well as Andre Agassi and John McEnroe."The US Open has always been one of the ‌most special tournaments ‌for me,” Federer ⁠said in a statement."So many unforgettable ⁠moments ⁠of my career happened in New York, and Arthur Ashe Stadium is a place that means a great deal to me. I’ve missed being part ​of that atmosphere and feeling the incredible energy that the fans bring every year."Federer is also set to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, with the ceremony scheduled for August in Newport, ‌Rhode Island. 

Al Sadd's Akram Afif, Al Rayyan’s Mahmoud Abunada and Al Rayyan's Roger Guedes with their trophies at the QFA Awards ceremony held at Raffles Hotel Doha Monday. Afif won the Best Player award for the sixth time. Abunada won the Best Goalkeeper award while Guedes clinched the Mansour Muftah Award for being the top scorer (21 goals) in the 2025-26 season. 

Al Rayyan booked their place in the final of the Gulf Champions League for Clubs after defeating Kuwait’s Al Qadsia 2-0 at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in the semi-final Sunday. Goals from Roger Guedes in the 17th minute and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the 50th sealed a deserved victory as Al Rayyan produced a controlled and confident performance to advance to the title decider. Al Rayyan asserted their dominance early through high pressing and sustained attacking pressure, opening the scoring when Abdulaziz Hatem delivered a precise pass to Guedes, who drove into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot into the net. The home side continued to threaten and created several chances, but the first half ended with Al Rayyan holding a narrow one-goal advantage. After the break, Al Rayyan maintained their momentum and doubled their lead from a corner taken by Khalid Ali. The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper and Mitrovic reacted quickest to finish from close range in the 50th minute. Al Rayyan then managed the game effectively, preserving their lead for the remainder of the match to secure progression to the final. They will now face Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab, who advanced to the final after defeating Iraq’s Zakho SC 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time in the other semi-final at Khalifa International Stadium. 

Al Rayyan made a perfect start to their Gulf Club Champions League campaign with a resounding 5-0 victory over Yemen’s Tadamon Hadramaut in their opening match at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium Wednesday.Brazilian forward Roger Guedes set the tone with a brace in the first half, scoring in the 17th and 28th minutes. The third goal came early in the second half when Yemeni defender Ayoub Tlili turned a cross into his own net (49th minute). Rodrigo Moreno (68th minute) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (90+6th minute) added further strikes to complete the rout.The home side dominated from the outset, pressing high and creating chances with sustained attacking pressure. Guedes broke the deadlock after a corner slipped past the defence, before doubling his tally with a thunderous strike from outside the box.After the restart, Tlili’s own goal widened the gap, and Moreno converted from a Mitrovic cross to make it four. Mitrovic then capped the night in stoppage time with a powerful header off a Wesley delivery.The emphatic win secured Al Rayyan’s first three points and a direct passage to the semi-finals of the competition. Al Rayyan midfielder Jassim Jaber hailed the team’s performance, calling the victory an “important motivation” for the squad moving forward.“We performed well and pressed from the start with the goal of winning, and that’s what we achieved,” Jaber said. “I thank the players for their great effort.
