Four people were killed in a helicopter crash Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, including three Colombian tourists from the same family, the country’s consul told AFP.  The helicopter went down in Tijuca National Park, a mountainside forest, which has very dense vegetation.  Firefighters confirmed the pilot and three women “burned to death” and released images showing the smoking remains of the aircraft on a steep, hard-to-reach hillside.  Diana Paez, the Consul General of Colombia in Rio de Janeiro, told AFP the three women were part of a family group who had traveled to the Brazilian city to celebrate a girl’s 15th birthday.  The group of six had split up because the helicopter could only take three passengers.  The birthday girl’s grandmother, aunt and cousin died in the crash, and she was supposed to take a second flight later on, with her father and his partner, Paez said.  The consulate provided support to Brazilian authorities in identifying the victims, a difficult task because of the condition of the bodies.  The aircraft went down near Vista Chinesa, a replica of a Chinese pagoda known for its high-altitude vantage point, with its views of Rio from the heart of the forest.  The monument appeared in the 2011 animated film “Rio.”  In June, two helicopters collided over Rio and left six people dead, including American singer Oliver Tree and Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim.  Helicopter rides are a popular attraction for tourists who want to see Rio de Janeiro’s famed sights and the natural splendor of the seaside metropolis.  Rio’s mayor Eduardo Cavaliere posted to X that he has asked Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency to immediately step up monitoring to ensure the safety of helicopter flights.

A US government map of Africa mislabeled every country during a State Department presentation at a global conference taking place in Brazil this week, causing a stir among attendees who took screenshots and posted them online.Reuters viewed a video of the presentation given at the Aids 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, which shows the errant map displayed halfway during a presentation about the US State Department’s new health agreements.A Reuters analysis found the image of the map included in the presentation contained an artificial intelligence watermark that signals it was made with OpenAI tools.The company said it was investigating the report.The State Department said it took “full responsibility” for the confusion caused and that the map had been produced by a team member who hastily changed the slide deck before the event.The map showed Nigeria, where the US currently has several hundred troops deployed, as landlocked in the Sahara Desert.Mozambique, which is in southeastern Africa, was relocated to the Horn of Africa, while Ivory Coast in West Africa was placed on the other side of the continent.Screenshots of the map first appeared in a Substack post by Aids expert Emily Bass and were widely shared on LinkedIn, with one post garnering some 40,000 views.“Whoever created and approved this slide did not know where countries in Africa are and did not care to check their work,” wrote Matt Petit, who focuses on AI and geopolitics at the Atlantic Council, in the post.In a statement, the State Department said: “We take full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation it caused for attendees, including our African partners.”The speaker at the conference was Jeff Graham, the top US health envoy who oversees an initiative known as the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, or PEPFAR.He did not reply to requests for comment.The State Department said the discussions at the conference were “substantive and constructive” despite the map and that it remains committed to fighting Aids with real results.The Trump administration’s decision last year to pause funding pending a review disrupted aid programmes worldwide but PEPFAR’s core work such as the provision of life-saving drugs has largely resumed.The US is scaling back other areas of its spending including on prevention and surveillance, and plans to fully phase out the programme in South Africa.

A fire ​at the velodrome ‌in Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Park ‌was ⁠brought under ‌control early Wednesday, with no risk of it spreading to ⁠other parts of the complex and no injuries reported, fire officials said.Fire crews were called to the scene at 4:17am (0717 GMT), and around 80 firefighters and 20 fire trucks tackled the blaze, the ​state's military fire department said in a statement, adding that no one was hurt.The velodrome was built ‌for the 2016 ⁠Rio Olympics ​and is administered by the city government. ​It houses the Olympic Museum, which features exhibits and historical artifacts from the Games, including the Olympic torch and medals.Firefighters were battling the blaze both inside and outside the building and working to protect artifacts at the Olympic Museum that were at risk, Lieutenant Colonel Fabio ‌Contreiras said in ‌an interview with ⁠CNN Brasil.Forensic experts were assessing the extent ⁠of the damage ⁠after the blaze reached the canvas ceiling of the velodrome and spread, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere told journalists."The velodrome and the Olympic Museum were barely affected by the ​fire," he said.The velodrome is Brazil's largest and most prominent track cycling center, and serves as a training base for the national weightlifting and cycling teams.In 2017, its roof was struck by two fires, causing minor damage. 

At least 18 suspects and several police officers were killed Tuesday during a massive anti-drug raid in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian authorities said."So far, we have 56 arrests and 18 criminals neutralized," Rio State Governor Claudio Castro told a press conference.He described the operation, which involved 2,500 officers and targeted a suspected drug-trafficking ring at a favela in Rio, as the "largest in the history" of the state.
