French superstar Kylian Mbappe says the knee injury that kept him sidelined for almost two months is "behind him" and there had never been a concern he would miss this year's World Cup.The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker admitted he had not been at his best mentally during the 54-day absence – the longest of his career. "There was a lot of frustration, anger and anxiety," the French captain said.Mbappe, who along with the French squad flew to the United States for friendlies against Brazil on Thursday and then Colombia Sunday, came on as a substitute for a few minutes in last week's Champions League last-16 match at Manchester City.He also played over 25 minutes for Real – for whom he is top scorer this campaign with 38 goals in 34 appearances – in the 3-2 derby win over Atletico on Sunday. "It is behind me," he said of the injury. "I put myself under a regime where I wanted to return gently but with a hunger to play. I hope I am going to be able to play during the international break and make a difference."The France captain – a World Cup winner in 2018 and runner-up in 2022 – said he had been annoyed by the rumour mill suggesting his injury was more serious than it actually was. He had avoided undergoing surgery after scans he had in Paris at the beginning of March revealed he would not require an intervention. "Lots of people gave their own diagnosis, I heard many false things," said Mbappe, who was appearing at an event of an insurance company he invested in in Paris on Monday.Mbappe said there had never been a doubt about the injury preventing him from playing at what will be his third World Cup finals in June. "No, that was never a topic of discussion," he said. "At worst I could have had a partial rupture (of the ligament) which would have ruled me out till April. There was never a debate about the World Cup or the climax to the season with Real Madrid."In spite of the sprain and the resulting pain the former PSG star played part of January and February, admitting he and Real "had tried to manage it as best as possible". "One has to look at the positive, today, I have no pain and we are still in the hunt for trophies, that is what is most important," he said. "We will have time afterwards to assess how it was handled. I am not going to go into the details, I will say I was not at my best in handling this period, I was not the happiest of players but I am delighted that is behind me now. All (the pain) is gone."Mbappe said he was looking forward to pitting his wits against the Brazilians, who are managed by Carlo Ancelotti, who coached the Frenchman in his first season at Real. "It might be a friendly but when you play Brazil, the greatest footballing nation with five World Cup wins, it is unbelievable to play against them," he said."It is a team who could win the World Cup, it is good to compare how we are at the moment with them. Even if we cannot take a lot of learnings out of this get together, we can nevertheless take some. One thing is for sure we are not going there for a holiday, we are going there as a step in our preparations for the World Cup." 

Ronald Araujo's header helped Barcelona extend their lead on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga to seven points with a tight 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano Sunday.Alvaro Arbeloa's Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid, fourth, later on in a derby clash.Araujo nodded home Joao Cancelo's corner after 24 minutes to secure the three points at Camp Nou but goalkeeper Joan Garcia's superb display played just as big a part in their victory."We knew how important it was to get this win before the international break, we did it, but it's true we suffered more than we would have liked," Garcia told DAZN."They knew how to cause us damage and we weren't at the level we have been with the ball above all."We knew we had to win and what the other teams do is not up to us."Hansi Flick's side were caught snoozing in the opening stages but Garcia made a fine save to deny Carlos Martin from close range.Called up by Luis de la Fuente to the Spanish national team for the first time ahead of March's upcoming friendlies, Garcia made several excellent saves to keep Rayo at bay, with the Madrid side dominant in the second half.At the other end, Raphinha was guilty of profligate finishing on numerous occasions. The winger scuffed wide after picking Pathe Ciss's pocket and charging through on goal.A few minutes later Ciss appeared to bring down teenage star Lamine Yamal in the area but the Barcelona player's appeals were ignored by the referee.Yamal's superb cross, with the outside of his boot, created another fine chance for Raphinha but the Brazilian's mis-hit effort was tipped over by Augusto Batalla.The champions took the lead through Araujo's header from Joao Cancelo's corner midway through the first half.Araujo has not featured much since taking a mental health break late last year, but came on as a substitute in Barca's 7-2 Champions League rout of Newcastle in midweek.With Eric Garcia rested following a muscle overload, Flick started the Uruguayan at right-back and was rewarded with what proved to be the winner."I feel very good, physically well, it's important that I can help the team," said Araujo."I'm in a good rhythm, working hard to be able to support where I have to, I'm always ready to help the team."Barca cling onThe Catalans came close to a second after the interval but Yamal dragged a low effort across the face of goal.Inigo Perez's Rayo took control and started generating dangerous chances as they searched for an equaliser.Joan Garcia denied Alvaro Garcia and then produced a spectacular save to push away Unai Lopez's header.Pacha Espino should have pulled the visitors level but, after beating Barca's high defensive line and staying onside, curled over the bar.Garcia pushed away a Jorge de Frutos drive before six minutes of stoppage time were added but Barca clung on to triumph."This is why we bought him," said Flick. "I know how important he is and how (important) his performance today was."The Barca coach had lots of praise for Rayo coach Perez after his team's impressive display."We didn't play our best game but we have to say Rayo played a fantastic game, congrats -- Inigo made a fantastic job," added Flick."His team played really great football, a great style, it's really amazing to see this and I'm really happy for him."Perez's side are 14th and fighting to stay clear of the relegation zone while also playing in the UEFA Conference League."The second half was perfect but we lacked the goal," Perez. "(Joan Garcia) appeared in the key moments when we might have been able to draw."Later on, Alaves produced a sensational comeback from three goals down to beat Celta Vigo 4-3. Quique Sanchez Flores's team climbed to 16th, three points above the relegation zone.Ferran Jutgla struck either side of Hugo Alvarez's goal as Celta, sixth, racked up a seemingly comfortable lead.However, Toni Martinez pulled one back before the interval to spark Alaves's comeback.Angel Perez added another before Martinez scored again to level and Abde Rebbach cut in from the left and fired home to claim a memorable victory for the visitors. 

Harry Kane said Bayern Munich had nothing to fear in taking on Real Madrid after setting up a quarter-final clash with the European giants by beating Atalanta on Wednesday. Kane, who sat on the bench in the first leg, scored twice as Bayern won 4-1 on Wednesday, wrapping up a 10-2 aggregate victory to book a date with the 15-time European Cup winners. “We don’t fear anyone,” the England captain said of the Real match-up. “We know it’ll be tough, but with the confidence from this game and the season so far, we just need to keep doing what we’re doing.” Kane’s brace brought his career total to 50 goals in 66 Champions League games. This season, he has 47 goals in 39 games in all competitions -- more than he has ever scored for a club in a single season. Nine points clear in the Bundesliga with eight games to play, Bayern have lost just two of 41 games in all competitions this season. In his first season in Germany, Kane lost over two legs in the semi-finals against Real, who beat Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley. Kane, who wore the captain’s armband at Bayern for the first time in the Champions League, suggested his side had learned from the defeat and knew how to take on Real. “Whenever you play Real Madrid in the Champions League, you have to expect a tough opposition, you have to be ready for a fight,” Kane said. “You have to be ready to try and play in a certain way, and we’ll be ready for that.” Bayern have not beaten the Spanish giants since the semi-finals of the 2011-12 competition. “Both clubs are giant,” Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said. “Who’s the best right now isn’t important -- the history of both clubs is huge It’ll be very special. Honestly speaking, with Madrid, when the level goes higher, then they get better. That’s why I’m expecting an absolute top game. It’ll be good for the fans – the neutral fans as well – but at the end we want to win.”

France captain Kylian Mbappe was in Paris Monday for treatment on a knee injury but no surgery is planned, the Real Madrid superstar's entourage said.Mbappe was "in Paris accompanied by members of the Real Madrid medical staff," the striker's camp said in a statement. "In agreement with the club, he is undergoing further tests on his knee," it continued, "with the aim of optimising his follow-up care and preparing for his comeback. No surgical intervention is being planned at the moment."Mbappe has been struggling with an injury to the external ligament of his left knee since the end of 2025 and missed last week's Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica due to "persistent pain" in training, sources close to the player said.His entourage insisted there was no disagreement regarding the treatment required by the player between his club and the French national team, who will be desperate to have Mbappe fully fit for the upcoming World Cup."It was a bit of a consensus between everyone (Mbappe, the coach and the doctors), and we think the best thing is that he stops, that he recovers and comes back at 100 percent," Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said late last week. "It's not going to be a question of days, it will be a bit longer, but I can't say how long, hopefully not too long."It remains to be seen if Mbappe, who has scored 38 goals in 33 appearances for his club this season, will be able to play in the Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City, the first leg of which is scheduled for March 11 with the return on March 17.France have two friendly matches lined up in the United States at the end of the month, against Brazil in Boston on March 26 and Colombia in Washington three days later. Their first World Cup game is on June 16 against Senegal. 

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said his team’s 2-1 win against Benfica on Wednesday to reach the Champions League last 16 was a victory for “everyone who is against racism”. The Frenchman was referring to the first leg of the play-off tie, which Madrid won 1-0 last week, which was marred by alleged racial abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. “We didn’t play our best match of the season, that’s for sure. But I think there are things more important than this match, and more important than football,” Tchouameni told reporters. Vinicius scored Madrid’s second goal at the Santiago Bernabeu and Tchouameni said the result was a “victory for everyone who is against racism”. Prestianni was provisionally suspended by UEFA for the game while the incident is under investigation and Benfica had an appeal against his ban rejected earlier Wednesday. “The dance continues,” wrote Vinicius on social media afterwards, along with a photo of a big banner hung at the Bernabeu reading “no to racism”. Real Madrid said they had thrown out one of their own supporters before the game for performing a Nazi salute. “This (club) member was identified by the club’s security staff moments after appearing on the (television) broadcast and was immediately expelled from the Santiago Bernabeu stadium,” said Madrid in a statement. “Real Madrid condemns this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society.” Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said he was happy when Vinicius found the net. “(I reacted) with joy obviously, for the great goal he scored, and because it was him, he deserves it,” said Arbeloa. “Without (Kylian) Mbappe I think it’s even more important and I am very happy for him.” Before the game Arbeloa said French superstar Mbappe would spent some time out as he recovers from a knee problem. “After yesterday’s session, we talked with the doctors, I spoke with him, and we felt the best thing was for him to stop, to recover 100 percent, and to come back in top shape, confident and without any discomfort for everything that’s coming, which is obviously very important,” Arbeloa told reporters after the match. Asked if it was discomfort or an injury, he added: “I think we can call it an injury, but it seems, and I hope, that it’s not a very serious injury, nothing major, and that he’ll be able to come back in a few days or weeks.”

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa called on European football governing body UEFA to make their fight against racism into more than just a slogan after the alleged abuse of star Vinicius Junior.UEFA provisionally suspended Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni for today's Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid after Vinicius accused him of racial abuse in the first leg last week. If UEFA find Prestianni, who argued with the Brazilian while holding his shirt over his mouth, abused Vinicius at the end of their investigation into the incident he will be suspended for a minimum of 10 matches."We have a great opportunity to mark a turning point in the fight against racism," Arbeloa told reporters. "UEFA, which has always been and has led this fight against racism, now has the chance not to leave it at just a slogan, at just a nice banner before matches, and I hope that they seize this opportunity."Vinicius scored a brilliant goal in the first leg, enabling Real Madrid to claim a 1-0 victory, before the alleged abuse led to the game being stopped for around 10 minutes. Arbeloa said he believed Vinicius will thrive on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu as the record 15-time champions bid to reach the last 16."Vinicius Junior has always shown a lot of bravery and a lot of character," said Arbeloa. "That is always his response, it always has been and I think it always will be. He is a fighter and I'm sure tomorrow he will go out to fight and have a great game, and keep showing he's one of the best players on the planet."Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois backed the 25-year-old winger, despite Prestianni and Benfica insisting there was no racial abuse. "(Benfica) are going to believe what their player says and we are 100 percent behind Vini, because Vini has fought thousands of battles on the pitch with defenders, there have been lots of clashes with players and he has never said something like this (happened)," Courtois told reporters."As (Prestianni) covered his mouth with his shirt, we can never know, and I think in the end Benfica will defend their player. There's not much more we can do and then it's up to UEFA and the institutions to decide what they want to decide."The Belgian stopper said he disagreed with Benfica coach Jose Mourinho's words after the game, with the veteran Portuguese manager attacking Vinicius for what he deemed a disrespectful celebration. "At the end of the day Mourinho is Mourinho. As a coach you're always, I think, going to defend your club and what your player has told you," said Courtois. "The only thing that disappoints me a bit is using Vini's celebration, I don't think Vini did anything wrong there... I don't think we can justify alleged racism because of a celebration."Vinicius has been abused by opposition supporters on numerous occasions since arriving at Real Madrid. Video footage showed some Benfica fans making monkey gestures at the attacker last week. "I think we have to be less stupid as a society," added Courtois.Benfica have appealed against Prestianni's provisional one match ban to try and make him available to face Madrid. "Prestianni is being labelled a racist person, and I can assure you he is anything but racist," Benfica president Rui Costa told reporters.The 20-year-old Argentine travelled to Madrid with his team-mates in case Benfica win their appeal. "UEFA has the decision in their hands, it made a decision, the club appealed, and we, as coaches, obviously have to prepare for every scenario, and that's one of them," said Joao Tralhao, one of Mourinho's assistants.Former Real Madrid coach Mourinho will not be able to lead his team from the dug-out back at the Santiago Bernabeu because he was sent off for protesting towards the end of the first leg."Obviously he is our leader, and a leader is always missed, his presence is always missed," added Tralhao, standing in for the Portuguese veteran. "(However) even though Jose Mourinho cannot be in the technical area, he is with us."

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho insisted he is capable of saying no to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez as he played down rumours of a return to the Spanish giants.Mourinho's Benfica host Real Madrid in a Champions League play-off round clash today, before the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week. The 63-year-old Portuguese coach, who led Madrid between 2010-2013, has a clause in his contract with Benfica which would allow him to depart the club, fuelling rumours Perez may turn to him again next season.Mourinho guided Benfica to a 4-2 victory over Alvaro Arbeloa's Real Madrid in the league phase of the Champions League in January, leading both teams to face each other again in the two-legged play-off round. "Can you say no? Yes," Mourinho told reporters when asked if he could reject an approach from the Madrid chief. "Yes you can."Mourinho admitted he has a "great friendship" with Perez and a permanent connection with Madrid, but said the break clause was agreed because of the Benfica presidential elections which were approaching in November 2025, a few weeks after he signed his contract. "I gave everything to Real Madrid, everything that I had, I did good things, I did bad things, but I gave absolutely everything and that's all," said Mourinho."When (someone) leaves a club with those type of feelings, I think a connection always exists... the fans think highly of me, and that is fantastic, but with this I don't want to encourage stories that don't exist... The only thing that exists is that I have another year on my contract with Benfica. It's a special contract because it was signed in an electoral period."Mourinho said the deal was signed to protect a hypothetical new president, although in the end Rui Costa was re-elected. "There is a clause that is very easy for both me and Benfica to break the contract, but the only thing that exists is the contract with Benfica, and there is nothing with Real Madrid," said Mourinho."I would very much like to eliminate Real Madrid (from the Champions League), but I would like Alvaro to win La Liga and for Alvaro to stay at Madrid for many years. I think he's a coach with a lot of capability and a boy who has Madrid within him, and with the personality to coach Madrid, which isn't something anyone can do."Mourinho said he expected a different game to the one his side dominated in Lisbon against Madrid in January, and highlighted the power of Arbeloa's side, record 15-time champions. "The Real Madrid I expect tomorrow is the Real Madrid who are number one favourites to win the Champions League," added Mourinho.Arbeloa said despite his good relationship with Mourinho he was determined to reach the last 16. "My objective is to eliminate Benfica, and after that he can win everything else, after that I wish him the best," explained Arbeloa.The coach would not reveal whether French superstar Kylian Mbappe was ready to start the game, after knee discomfort kept him on the bench last weekend in the win over Real Sociedad. "Kylian came with us, he will train and tomorrow you will see if he plays or doesn't," said Arbeloa.Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga said Los Blancos were out for revenge at the Estadio da Luz. "I think we have to change our mentality (from the league phase game), we're better on that front now, we have to attack and defend together," Camavinga told reporters. "We want to play a great game, because losing a game like that was tough for our fans... we want to win tomorrow with the spirit of revenge." 

Holders Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool are among the clubs battling for direct passage to the last 16 of the Champions League going into the final round of the league phase this week. Fifteen teams have already sealed their progress to the knockout rounds but a further 17 sides will be competing for the remaining places with all 18 games kicking off at the same time Wednesday. The top eight receive a bye into the last 16 while the next 16 teams enter Friday’s draw for the play-offs, although PSG demonstrated last season that is no obstacle to lifting the trophy. Here is a look at what’s at stake on matchday eight: Qualified for last 16Arsenal, with seven wins from seven, and Bayern Munich are the only two clubs already assured of a place in the last 16. The Gunners could become the first team to win all eight games since the league phase was introduced last season. They host Kairat Almaty, who are bottom of the table with just a single point. Bayern’s lone defeat in Europe came at Arsenal in November. Vincent Kompany’s side go to PSV Eindhoven in their final fixture. Knockout place guaranteedReal Madrid, record 15-time winners of the competition, will wrap up a last-16 berth with victory away to Jose Mourinho’s Benfica. Liverpool will join them if they beat Qarabag at Anfield, while Tottenham know victory at Eintracht Frankfurt will allow them to also bypass the play-offs despite their domestic struggles. Eight teams – those placed sixth to 13th – are locked on 13 points, with reigning champions PSG hosting Newcastle at the Parc des Princes. Chelsea currently occupy the final top-eight spot but face a tricky assignment at Napoli, coached by former Blues boss Antonio Conte. Barcelona and Manchester City are ninth and 11th respectively. They are poised to sneak into the top eight if any of the teams above them slip up. At least PSG or Newcastle, if not both, will drop points. Sporting Lisbon, Atletico Madrid and Atalanta are also in the mix, while Inter – who have lost three matches in a row – and Juventus sit on 12 points. All of those clubs will progress from the league phase regardless of Wednesday’s results. On course for knockoutsBorussia Dortmund are all but certain to advance alongside Galatasaray. Azerbaijan’s Qarabag are on track to reach the knockouts for the first time after a last-gasp win over Eintracht last week. Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco, PSV, Athletic Bilbao and Olympiacos round out the top 24 as it stands, but there are seven clubs beneath them who could force their way back into contention. Teams in dangerItalian champions Napoli are the most notable team at risk of missing out on the knockout phase. They are 25th – behind Olympiacos by virtue of fewer goals scored. FC Copenhagen also have eight points but head to Barcelona for their final match. Benfica and Ajax, both former European champions, must win to stand a chance of qualifying. The same is true for Club Brugge, Bodo/Glimt, Pafos and Union Saint-Gilloise. EliminatedDebutants Kairat and Villarreal have lost six of seven matches. Slavia Prague are also yet to win, while Eintracht sacked coach Dino Toppmoeller earlier this month after a poor run of results both in Germany and Europe. 

Real Madrid are aiming to seal direct passage to the Champions League last 16 at Benfica Wednesday, but standing in their way is their divisive former coach Jose Mourinho.The veteran Portuguese still has slim hopes of taking Benfica into the play-off round, needing victory and other results to go their way, but pride alone is enough of a reward as he takes on Alvaro Arbeloa's 15-time European champions.Mourinho never won the Champions League with Madrid, coaching the club between 2010 and 2013, a period in which rivals Barcelona had the upper hand both at home and on the continent.His opposite number at the Estadio da Luz is a former disciple of his in ex-Madrid defender Arbeloa, one of his most loyal foot soldiers during his reign. However, their strong prior relationship has not stopped the oft-antagonistic Mourinho from taking an apparent dig at him ahead of the match."For me, it's a surprise when coaches with no history get the opportunity to manage the most important clubs in the world," said Mourinho last week, interpreted as commentary on Arbeloa's appointment to replace Xabi Alonso earlier in January.Arbeloa had been coaching Madrid's reserve team, with Los Blancos his debut first team job. He responded with grace to Mourinho's words. "You all know what Mourinho means to me. If a coach like that speaks, especially him, I listen and analyse it," said the 43-year-old Spaniard.In his first press conference as Madrid coach, Arbeloa said he carries Mourinho "within him" and that it was an "honour and a privilege" to have worked under the Portuguese. Arbeloa said he would try to be himself rather than an imitation of the 63-year-old. "While it's true I am not afraid of failing, and have never been, I'm sure that if I tried to be Jose Mourinho, I would fail spectacularly," he explained.Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey at second-tier Albacete in Arbeloa's first match at the helm but have won the following three games, including a 6-1 demolition of Monaco. Sitting third in the league phase table, victory would ensure Madrid progressed to the last 16, avoiding the play-off round, and gaining second-leg home advantage.Madrid moved on after Mourinho but some of his hallmarks have returned, particularly in recent years as the club regularly rail against officiating in Spain. Mourinho's siege mentality has been embraced by club president Florentino Perez, and Arbeloa's appointment means some aspects of the Portuguese's game returning too.The now-Benfica boss advocated for a counter-attacking Madrid and Arbeloa says he would be foolish not to utilise that strategy. "I cannot go against what is natural for the players, the opposite -- I have to try and take advantage of it," said Arbeloa after Madrid beat Villarreal on Saturday.Mourinho, a rare coach admired by Perez, has only faced Real Madrid once since leaving the club in 2013. While coaching Manchester United in 2017 he fell to a 2-1 defeat by Madrid in the European Super Cup final in Macedonia.In the first few years after leaving Madrid he was occasionally linked with a return, although Perez never pulled the trigger on it, seemingly aware of the negative effects it could have. Mourinho stoked the rivalry between Madrid and Barcelona to unprecedented heights in the modern game, controversially poking then Barca assistant Tito Vilanova in eye during a brawl following a Spanish Super Cup defeat in 2011.There were also fractures in the Madrid dressing room under the pressure of Mourinho's approach and demands. Since his heyday at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, which led him to Madrid, Mourinho's career has taken a turn for the worse.He won the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 during a difficult spell there, before modest stints at Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce.Benfica appointed him in September, hoping he could turn things around, but several defeats in the Champions League have left them facing an early European exit.Domestically Benfica sit third, some way behind leaders Porto, who knocked them out of the Portuguese Cup earlier in January, with fans left furious.Amid the problems Mourinho has, Madrid's visit to Lisbon is an invitation for him to reassert some dominance, albeit for one night only, before a club which has never forgotten him.
