Despite enduring a torrid start to the season, Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr can still make a difference even when he is off his game and will return to his best form in time, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday.Forward Vinicius has scored just one goal in eight appearances across all competitions this season for Spanish club Real Madrid, who sit fourth in the LaLiga standings with 15 points.However, the 26-year-old showed flashes of his quality in Brazil's 4-2 friendly victory over Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday, contributing to the third goal and converting a penalty for the fourth."I know Vini very well. To me, he is a key player for the national team - a key player for Brazil - and he was a key player in my own footballing journey," said Ancelotti, who also coached Vinicius when he was in charge of Real Madrid."He is a key player for the future. Is he at his best right now? No, he isn't, but it is the start of the season. And Vini, always, even when he isn't at his best, he can still make the difference, just as he did today."The goal that really opened up the game was thanks to him. So, I'm going to be very patient, because he deserves that patience."Brazil next travel to Kolkata for a friendly with India on Saturday. 

Jude Bellingham has been named England men's player of the year for a second successive season after a standout campaign in which he scored a record seven goals at the 2026 World Cup, the Football Association said on Friday.The 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder's World Cup tally set a record for an England men's player at a major tournament as the Three Lions secured their best finish at the competition since 1966 by finishing third."It feels great," Bellingham said. "It's a huge honour to be recognised by the fans again. So not something you think about when you’re playing for your country, but it's obviously a beautiful little addition to the great summer we had, and the honour of playing for my country."The award was decided by supporters voting on the official England app.Bellingham's World Cup tally included doubles in the thrilling round-of-16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium and in the quarter-final win over Norway in Miami.He also became the youngest European player to feature at four major tournaments.England manager Thomas Tuchel said Bellingham was "one of the players of the tournament, not only for us but of the whole tournament.""He lived up to his full potential; you could just see what a competitor and what a machine he is," Tuchel said. "He just thrives under pressure, he just loves these moments, he loves these stages and it brings out the very best in him."Captain Harry Kane was England's top scorer for a seventh consecutive season after netting 12 goals across all national team competitions, matching his best tally for England.Kane called the achievement a "showcase of consistency" and thanked his teammates and coaches for their support.  

Columbus Crew sacked Argentine reserve team coach Federico Higuain for telling a female referee "Don't forget this is a man's game" while refusing to release her from a handshake, the Major League Soccer club said Tuesday.Higuain, the brother of former Argentina and Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain, had already received a red card and a two-match suspension for the incident before the team dismissed him."We determined it's in the best interest of our Club, players and support staff to dismiss Federico Higuaín from his responsibilities," said Columbus Crew general manager Issa Tall."After conversations this week and further assessing the past month, our Club's standards of what's expected from a leader for one of our teams have not been met."Higuain during follow-up talks with the club was "unwilling to reflect or take accountability for his actions, nor did he offer a public apology," the Athletic reported, citing anonymous club sources.The incident occurred during a game in MLS's developmental MLS NEXT Pro league.According to the referees' union, Higuain "committed two deliberate acts of physical abuse and sexism against a female official -- squeezing her hand and refusing to let go after being told to stop three times."This physical intimidation was compounded by a demeaning, sexist remark to the official: 'Don't forget, this is a man's game,'" said the Professional Soccer Referees Association.The union criticized the league's initial two-game suspension as falling "drastically short," and called for at least a six-game suspension."Women make every level of this game better. They should not have to endure intimidation or degrading comments to prove it," it said in a statement."Our female officials have proven their excellence on the world stage. They deserve the same respect, dignity, and safe working environment as every other official."  

Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde suffered an ankle injury in his team's weekend derby loss to Atletico Madrid, the club confirmed Tuesday.The Uruguay midfielder was hurt by a tackle from Atletico's Lee Kang-in, which Real have insisted should have resulted in a sending off for the South Korean.According to Spanish press reports, Valverde will be sidelined for several weeks and will miss Uruguay's upcoming friendlies against Japan, South Korea and India."After the tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a grade 3 sprain in his left ankle," the La Liga giants said in a short statement. Real coach Jose Mourinho arrived at his post-match press conference following Sunday's 2-1 loss with printed screen-shots of two tackles he felt should have resulted in red cards for Atletico players, including Lee's on Valverde. 

Kylian Mbappe says being managed by Zinedine Zidane for the French national team is "like something out of a movie". The pair will work together for the first time during this international break, as Zidane returns to management five years after leaving Real Madrid.Last week Mbappe referred to Zidane as "the player who most embodies the France team", noting that he left an indelible mark on French football. Mbappe is a key figure for the current generation of French footballers, having led Les Bleus to their second World Cup in 2018, and helping them back to the final in 2022. Zidane confirmed last week that Mbappe would continue as France captain.Speaking to Spanish paper AS, Mbappe explained that Zidane was present in his career from his formative years."Yes, years ago (he took me to Real Madrid's training ground)," said Mbappe. "He was the first, to pick me up and take me to Real Madrid, to the training complex. I was 13 or 14, it was ages ago.""And now he’s my national team coach. It’s like something out of a movie, but he's top-level."Zidane replaced his former France teammate Didier Deschamps after the World Cup, ending a 14-year spell in charge for the latter."It’s a new phase with a new coach," said Mbappe. "It’s going to be a new experience for everyone, since we’ve only ever had Deschamps. It will be a change for us, but I think everything will turn out very well."France face Turkey in the Nations League on Friday in Zidane's debut as France manager, before fixtures against Belgium and Italy. 

Atletico Madrid edged 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 in a La Liga derby clash on Sunday to leave Jose Mourinho's side trailing leaders Barcelona by six points.Dean Huijsen was sent off early in the second half for Los Blancos before Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David's goals earned Diego Simeone's Atletico victory, with Antonio Rudiger pulling one back late on.Atletico rose to second, five points behind Barca and one ahead of Real Madrid, who chalked up a second defeat of the campaign. The game hinged on Huijsen's red card early in the second period, for pulling down Giuliano Simeone in the box which led to a penalty, tucked away by Grimaldo to set Atletico on their way.Real Madrid were unhappy about challenges from Cristian Romero and Lee Kang-in in the first half which Mourinho said should have been red cards."They were two clear red cards... the difficulty we had after (Huijsen's red) with 11 (players) against 10, well imagine 50 minutes with 11 against nine," Mourinho grumbled. "There are no miracles in football," he continued. "11 against nine, well we can imagine how that would have finished."Atletico midfielder Koke said the victory proved his side are capable of winning trophies. "We can compete against every team if we give 100 percent," explained Koke. "(Real) Madrid are one of the best in the world and today we showed that."Mourinho started with Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield over Bernardo Silva, opting for defensive clout over creativity. There was more tension than footballing quality in the first half, with neither side capable of creating any clear chances.The main talking point was an incident between Jude Bellingham and Atletico defender Romero. The England international threw himself into a tackle and Romero trod on his leg, with Bellingham booked initially, but after a VAR review the referee removed the card and issued it to the Atletico man.Madrid were also unhappy with a heavy tackle by Lee on Federico Valverde, which went unpunished just before half-time. It was a scrappy battle, intense but lacking excitement comparative to the star power on the pitch, especially in Madrid's front line, with Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Bellingham kept quiet.Pivotal momentThe game burst into life early in the second half when Huijsen pulled back Giuliano Simeone's arm as the forward ran through on goal and Atletico were awarded a penalty. Huijsen was dismissed after a VAR review and Grimaldo beat Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from the penalty spot.Mourinho reacted immediately by replacing the underwhelming Vinicius and Arda Guler and sending on club record signing Yan Diomande and Rudiger. It was Atletico who struck next, though, with Canada international David tucking away Giuliano Simeone's raking low cross on 59 minutes for his third goal in three matches.The hosts came close to getting a third but Courtois made an excellent save to deny Julian Alvarez and Ibrahima Konate reacted brilliantly to head Grimaldo's effort from the rebound off the line. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved from Diomande and Bellingham rowed with Giuliano Simeone as Madrid's frustrations showed, impotent to change the course of the game.Madrid pulled a goal back in the final stages with Rudiger heading Bernardo Silva's cross past Oblak. However, it was too little too late for Mourinho's side. "It wasn't a clean sheet, which is a shame, we had quite a good game but we left them a chance," said Oblak. "It was important to win, but La Liga is very long." 

Jose Mourinho said the mental strength of his Real Madrid team gave him confidence heading into the derby clash at Atletico Madrid on Sunday despite problems with their game."In this second spell I've understood that it's getting more and more difficult to hear anything good about Real Madrid. It's not a problem to be conscious of our problems. But we are also conscious of the very good things we have in the team," Mourinho told a press conference on Saturday."Alongside the quality it has, this team has a strength which is very significant, the strength of the group. This gives me confidence."The city rivals are separated by two points after six LaLiga matches this season. INCONSISTENT PERFORMANCESThe last Madrid derby that Mourinho took part in as manager was the 2013 Copa del Rey final, an historic victory for Atletico over Real at the Bernabeu.Both sides will be seeking to set the tone for the early stages of the campaign, aware that last season's 5-2 victory for Atletico at the Metropolitano was a turning point in the trajectory of Xabi Alonso's tenure at Real Madrid."A derby always has something extra. Derbies are history, culture, passion from the fans, players, coaches," said Mourinho.Los Blancos have just one victory in their last seven LaLiga trips to the Metropolitano and, with Barcelona already three points ahead of them, anything other than a win risks that gap widening. The Catalan side face Sevilla later on Saturday.Mourinho has started his second stint at Real Madrid with six wins from seven games, but inconsistent performances have sown seeds of concern about the evolution of his team.In spite of Diego Simeone's longevity at Atletico, his side are similarly in the early stages of finding a defined style and shape this season. Over the past three years, 22 new players have been signed by Atletico, giving a sense of continuous flux.Simeone has been without two of his natural forward options in the early stages of the season due to fitness issues. Alexander Sorloth is yet to feature, and Julian Alvarez has been limited to 145 minutes of action. A late arrival in the transfer window, Canadian striker Jonathan David made his first start on Wednesday.Alvarez has missed the last two matches due to a muscular problem but will play some part on Sunday."He will be with us, we will see whether that's from the start or in the second half," Simeone told a press conference on Saturday.In terms of his approach to the match, the Argentine manager was keen for his side to limit turnovers of possession, saying Real Madrid carried more threat on the counter-attack in his eyes. Simeone advised his team to play decisively and with cool heads."In the end, football is calmness. The talent, they have it. And above all, conviction. When you have conviction in what you're doing, it can go well or badly but you can sleep well at night," said Simeone. 

Real Madrid substitute Carlos Espi snatched his team a last-gasp 3-2 win at Elche on Tuesday to pull them level with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. The striker, who already saved his team at Espanyol in their opening game with a late strike, tucked home at the back post in the 91st minute after Madrid threw away a two-goal lead.Espi, who Madrid signed this summer from Levante, has not started a game for the club but both of his goals have been vital for Jose Mourinho's side.Madrid have five wins from six matches, level on points with champions Barca, who host Racing Santander on Wednesday."(Espi) comes on with great motivation, (but) he has in front of him a player who is not a normal player," said Mourinho of Kylian Mbappe, who also scored for Madrid."Playing with the two of them is not easy... with the changes I made late on I risked everything, because a draw was not enough." Mourinho was unhappy with his team not extending their 2-0 lead and allowing Elche, now bottom of La Liga, to fight back. "There are games which seem to be over... which we're not killing off, and after not killing them off they go from easy to being out of control," added the veteran coach.Mourinho rested Jude Bellingham for the first time this season, bringing Arda Guler into the team in his place. Players from both teams wore t-shirts in support of residents from the city of Ceuta after the recent migration crisis in the Spanish territory in north Africa, although Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konate rolled them halfway up, appearing to slightly obscure the message "we are all Ceutans". Vinicius has been struggling for his best form this season and missed some presentable opportunities at the Martinez Valero stadium. The forward prodded wide after Guler set him up in the second minute, and he also sent another effort badly off-target from the edge of the box.Tete Morente threatened at the other end but Madrid were on top and took the lead midway through the first half. Guler curled a free-kick around the wall and against the post, with the ball hitting Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro before it crossed the line, for an own goal.Madrid's second came eight minutes later, created by record signing Yan Diomande, who registered his first assist for the club. Starting for the second time, the Ivorian winger crossed for Mbappe to slip past Dituro for his eighth goal of the season across all competitions.Mbappe collided with the goalkeeper and appeared to be hurt but soon recovered and was able to play on. The striker combined again with Diomande early in the second half but could only head the winger's blasted cross high over the bar.Vinicius drilled wide before he was replaced, ending a frustrating evening for the Brazil international. - Elche battle back - Elche pulled one back through Abiel Osorio's header from Lucas Cepeda's cross, with the forward leaping high to nod past Thibaut Courtois.It struck fear into Los Blancos and Elche capitalised, equalising in the 83rd minute through Nino. The Spanish striker produced a fine low finish to pull his team level with the 15-time European champions.Mourinho threw on strikers Espi and Endrick to try and find a late winner, and he got what he was looking for.Espi made a run to the back post where Mbappe found him to knock in the late winner. Earlier Valencia earned a 1-0 win at Alaves, while Rayo Vallecano defeated Espanyol 2-1.It was Valencia's first win of the season, after they sacked coach Carlos Corberan on Sunday, secured with a Luis Rioja strike with 12 minutes to go. 

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho hailed playmaker Arda Guler on Monday ahead of the team's visit to face Elche in La Liga.The Turkish midfielder came on as a substitute in Madrid's 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday and helped steady the team when they were wobbling under pressure. Guler is not assured of a starting place at Madrid, with Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all part of Mourinho's regular side.The 21-year-old is competing with record signing Yan Diomande and Brahim Diaz among others for minutes, ahead of the central midfield duo. "There are people more qualified than me to talk about his development, people who have been here since he arrived, about how he's transformed physically," Mourinho told reporters."But for me, his quality of play is incredible -- his vision, his decision-making, his playmaking, the stability he brings to the team, his creativity... "For me, he's a player with fantastic potential who already has some very impressive stats." Guler has shown he has a strong link with Mbappe on the pitch, regularly combining well with the French forward, including for Madrid's fourth goal against Rayo.Mourinho said he would not go completely overboard with praise for Guler, who arrived from Fenerbahce in 2023. "Maybe I don't want to go so far as to say 'top, top, top' three times, but I can definitely say 'top, top'," joked the Portuguese coach.One player still looking for his best form at Madrid is Vinicius. The Brazilian winger has scored one goal this season and Mourinho reiterated his view that Vinicius is still not at his best. "The best version of him is scoring goals. Obviously, assisting is important, working for the team is very important. Commitment, solidarity, and teamwork are very important," said Mourinho. "But there's another Vinicius, the Vinicius who arrived in Lisbon last season (in the Champions League) and in close matches, in the knockout rounds, gets one chance, scores a goal and that's it."He's lacking that top-level performance lately, but I am happy with him." Second-placed Madrid trail La Liga leaders Barcelona, who boast a 100 percent record, by three points. 

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe said Monday it was natural for people to consider him as a potential Ballon d'Or winner this year after his World Cup exploits. The France captain scored 10 goals at the tournament this summer to win the Golden Boot, with his country finishing fourth, and has netted 22 in the competition during his career, making him the World Cup's all-time top scorer.  Mbappe, 27, has not yet won the prestigious trophy given to the world's best player. "I think that when you play for Real Madrid, which is the best club in the world, naturally people associate you with that kind of award, they associate you with collective awards, individual awards," Mbappe told reporters. "A lot of people, when they see me in the street, talk to me about the Ballon d'Or, a lot of people talk about me as a possible Ballon d'Or winner... "Of course I made a lot of history this summer in the most important competition in sport, but we'll see. "I have the feeling that it's a good year for that, but there's still a long time to go and people are free to vote for whoever they think is the best player in the world." Since joining Real Madrid in 2024 Mbappe has scored huge quantities of goals but the club has failed to win a major trophy.On Tuesday the record 15-time European champions host Inter Milan in the Champions League in the first match of the league phase. During Mbappe's first two years at Madrid the team has appeared unbalanced, with too many star names, including the Frenchman and Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior, widely considered not to be contributing enough to the team effort -- in contrast to Ousmane Dembele at Paris Saint-Germain and Raphinha at Barcelona. "We have to improve," admitted Mbappe. "But I could play dumb and tell you that I score more goals than (Dembele and Raphinha), and that they need to score more goals to be like me. "Everyone is different, but I want to do things intelligently and say that of course I have to improve and all that, but I don't like comparisons because I think I do a lot of things that others don't do."Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho recently said he would prefer if Mbappe scored fewer goals but also worked hard to help the team win titles. Mbappe said he would accept lower numbers if it led to trophies, but noted they were not mutually exclusive. "I'd take 30 goals with titles, yes, but... for me it's an absurd debate," said Mbappe. "I always want to score goals and win titles... you don't have to choose, you can do both things." - Mourinho faces old friends - Veteran Portuguese coach Mourinho led Inter to Champions League glory in 2010 at the Santiago Bernabeu before he departed to take over at Real Madrid. Despite his history with the Italian side, whom he steered to the treble that year, the coach said that only mattered before and after, but not during the match. "There aren't many (people) left from my time, but it'll always be a pleasure to see people, even if I don't know them, but people who defend Inter, before and after," said Mourinho."During the game I want to win, they want to win, and there won't be time to think about things from a wonderful past." Mourinho wants his Madrid players to bounce back from their first defeat of the season, 1-0 at Real Betis on Friday in La Liga. "I want to win. I could tell you I want to play well, but I don't want to play well like we did against Betis and lose," said Mourinho. "Obviously we're in a phase where we play eight games and the objective in these eight games is to qualify, and I think we're going to do that. But I want to think about this match in isolation from that context. "I want to think about this match as a one-off game. I don't want to think that we still have seven more matches to play, and I want to win."rbs/jc

Real Madrid appointed Jose Mourinho as their coach on Thursday on a three-year deal, with the Portuguese veteran making a sensational return to the Spanish capital after 13 years away. The 63-year-old replaces Alvaro Arbeloa after Madrid finished a second consecutive season without a major trophy, falling behind domestic rivals Barcelona. "(Real Madrid have) agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as the first team's head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029," said the 15-time European champions in a statement. "Jose Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins." One of football's most successful yet divisive managers, Mourinho arrives from Benfica, where the Lisbon club completed an unbeaten league campaign but finished third. Benfica said Wednesday Real Madrid were paying 15mn euros ($17.25m) for the Portuguese coach.Mourinho managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during an intense period of rivalry with Pep Guardiola's golden era Barcelona side. Real Madrid became the first club to reach 100 points in a La Liga season under Mourinho in the 2011-12 campaign, although Barcelona did the same in the subsequent season before Mourinho departed.Mourinho divided the Real Madrid dressing room, with some players - including predecessor Arbeloa - fiercely loyal to him, while others were at loggerheads with the coach. Known to rule with an iron fist, Mourinho is charged with bringing Real Madrid's dressing room egos in check, after multiple conflicts and problems marked a troubled season. Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde was treated in hospital after a row with team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni in May, among other flashpoints. Coaches Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa also could not find a way to successfully deploy star players Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham together without destabilising the balance of the team.In an appearance on Spanish television earlier in May, Madrid president Florentino Perez credited Mourinho with laying the groundwork for Real Madrid's last six Champions League titles, achieved in the years after the Portuguese departed. The chief said he would bring back Mourinho if he was reelected president earlier in June, which he was. Mourinho's return to Madrid also signifies a jump back to the European elite after several years away from the game's peak. The coach burst into the limelight as he won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, before helping Chelsea claim back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. Mourinho labelled himself a "special one" as his team dominated the English top flight, before guiding Inter Milan to Champions League glory in 2010 as part of a unique treble for an Italian side. Madrid chief Perez appointed him to try and stop Guardiola's powerful Barca team, which he achieved to an extent, in a fractious spell which also disrupted the harmony in the Spanish national team.Mourinho returned to Chelsea, winning the Premier League in 2015, before modest spells at Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma among other clubs. He won the EFL Cup and Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 and since then has only lifted the Conference League trophy with Roma in 2022. The coach was sacked by Turkish side Fenerbahce in August 2025 after failing to guide them past Benfica in a Champions League qualification play-off, before he was appointed by the Portuguese side the following month.  

France forward ‌Ousmane Dembele has defended captain Kylian Mbappe, saying criticism of the ​Real Madrid striker has ‌become excessive as the national team prepare for the World Cup.Dembele, ‌who has ⁠emerged as a ‌key figure for France at the ‌tournament and is a contender for this year's Ballon d'Or after helping Paris ⁠St Germain win the Champions League, told Spanish newspaper Marca that some commentators had gone too far in their assessment of his long-time teammate.Mbappe remains one of the most scrutinised figures in French football since leaving PSG and joining Real Madrid in 2024.Despite still being a prolific scorer, the France captain came under criticism during a season in which Real failed to ​win either La Liga or the Champions League, while some pundits and supporters have questioned his leadership with the national team since he inherited the captaincy following Hugo ‌Lloris's retirement from international football.Mbappe's ⁠performances, public appearances ​and even minor aspects of his behaviour regularly attract intense debate ​in France."The criticism towards him is very, very unfair," Dembele said before France start their World Cup campaign against Senegal on Tuesday. "Some people go a bit too far with the criticism of Kylian."He's an incredible player and a very good person off the pitch. Some people overdo the criticism because he's Kylian Mbappe. They shouldn't keep going after him. Whether he ties his shoelaces or not, whether he pulls up his socks or not... it's too much. He's still a human being."With the France ‌team, he's very good with ‌us, he's a leader."The pair have ⁠developed a close relationship during their years together with Les Bleus. They ⁠are expected to play central roles ⁠in France's bid for a third World Cup title in the United States, Canada and Mexico.Dembele also paid tribute to coach Didier Deschamps, who has announced that he will step down after the World Cup following more than a decade in charge of the national side."He's simply an exceptional coach," Dembele said. "He will ​forever remain a legend among French national team coaches."Deschamps guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and another final four years later.Asked about the prospect of former France great Zinedine Zidane succeeding Deschamps, Dembele welcomed the idea."We hope to welcome him one day to the France bench," he said. "I'm convinced he would do a fantastic job."Zidane, who won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and later enjoyed major success coaching Real Madrid, has long ‌been linked with the ​France job but has repeatedly declined to discuss the position while Deschamps remains in charge.
