Two matches will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, to kick off the Qatar Basketball Cup for men for the 2025-2026 season.The first match will be between Al Sadd and Al Ahli at Al Rayyan Sports Club Hall in the preliminary round.The winner will advance to face Al Arabi in the quarterfinals on April 11.The second match is the first of the quarterfinals, featuring Al Rayyan against Al Khor.Al Rayyan will be looking to bounce back from their league loss to Al Arabi, while Al Khor hope to pull off an upset and continue their journey in the tournament.The quarterfinals will continue on Thursday at Al Gharafa Sports Club Hall, with Al Wakrah facing Qatar SC and Al Gharafa taking on Al Shamal in two evenly matched encounters.

Qatar University (QU), through its Social and Economic Survey Research Institute, is conducting a nationwide study titled 'Baseline Study to Estimate Food Loss and Waste in Qatar 2025' in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality. The study supports national efforts to improve food system efficiency while strengthening sustainability and food security nationwide.The study aims to measure the scale of food loss and waste across the various stages of the food supply chain in the country, beginning with production and processing and extending through distribution and consumption. The project will provide accurate scientific data by strengthening institutional collaboration among key national stakeholders, particularly QU and the Ministry of Municipality.This collaboration supports unified efforts, enhances co-ordination among institutions, and assists policymakers in developing strategies and programs to reduce food loss and waste while improving resource efficiency. Work on the project began on November 17, 2024 and is expected to continue until September 2026.The study is being implemented through a comprehensive research methodology that relies on collecting and analysing data from multiple sources to develop a reliable knowledge base to support strategic planning for food security and sustainability in Qatar.In this context, Dr Noora al-Mannai, director of the SESRI, emphasised the importance of the study, stating, “This study represents one of the key national research initiatives aligned with QU’s research priorities, particularly in the areas of sustainability, environmental protection, and food security." It also reflects the importance of collaboration among national institutions in generating knowledge and exchanging research expertise to support evidence-based policymaking.The project gains additional value through partnerships with relevant international organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the United Nations Environment Programme, which enhance the quality of the research outputs and connect them to global efforts aimed at reducing food loss and waste and advancing sustainable development.”Dr Elmogiera Elawad, section head of Field Operations at SESRI, noted that the study adopts a comprehensive field-based methodology covering the entire food supply chain. This includes food production at farms, marketing and retail stages, food services in restaurants, hotels, and hospitals, and ultimately household consumption. This comprehensive coverage aims to provide an accurate assessment of food loss and waste at different stages through quantitative measurement, while also examining individuals’ attitudes, behaviours, and practices related to food waste and agricultural loss. The study will contribute to building a reliable scientific database that supports the development of effective interventions and policies to address this issue.

One of the winners of the Akhlaquna Award this year was ‘Feed a Friend’, a Qatar-based community initiative that aims to support the weaker section of society with social and emotional support.‘Feed a Friend’ was the winner in the Akhlaquna Individual Contributions Award–Qatar category, and Jaffrin Alliyah Choudury, founder and CEO of the organisation, received the award on Tuesday evening from Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation.**media[433545]**Choudury said that Feed a Friend delivers food and other essential support to those in need, helping thousands of people regain stability while promoting compassion and social responsibility.Launched in 2020, the initiative provided essential groceries and food support to those facing financial hardship, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The initiative has since grown into a large volunteer-led team, supporting thousands through food boxes, community fridges, and other initiatives. The initiative has supported more than 46,000 individuals with food and other necessities.“While the initiative has supported more than 46,000 individuals with food, its deeper impact lies in the over 2,500 volunteers involved, whose perspectives have shifted and sense of responsibility has grown, ultimately contributing to building a more cohesive community,” said Choudury while addressing the audience at the award ceremony.In the early years, the organisation set a target of providing 30 hot meals over 30 days to individuals in need. However, the demand from the community surpassed the initial target and they later extended the provision to 60 meals. With the support of the partners, the team has been able to deliver hot meals directly to the doors of those in need across a wide area of the country, ensuring accessibility for those requiring assistance.“Akhlaquna recognition marks an important milestone in the journey of the initiative, not only on a personal level, but also for the communities that have been part of it,” Choudury remarked. “It reflects a broader appreciation for the values of generosity and social responsibility that we believe in and strive to promote.”In addition to providing meals to the needy, the programme currently has other initiatives, such as Newborn Care Boxes and Community Fridge Refills. Furthermore, the initiative also provides a supply of free organic vegetables; home learning packs for students, among others, as well as pre-owned clothes and footwear.“Every individual can play a role in promoting ethical values by practising them consistently and using their platforms to inspire others, as even a simple act of kindness can create an impact far beyond what we can imagine,” added Choudury.The organisation aims to ensure that no one goes hungry through its initiatives, often in collaboration with local community members and partners. It is also open to receiving any number of volunteers willing to contribute to its social and ethical commitments.

His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, the Governor of the Qatar Central Bank, held a meeting Tuesday with Arnaud Pescheux, the ambassador of the French Republic to the State of Qatar.  During the meeting, they reviewed the key facets of bilateral co-operation between the two countries, with a focus on enhancing collaboration within the financial and banking sectors.

Qatar Charity’s team in Sudan has completed the distribution of food baskets to 15,708 beneficiaries, with generous support from philanthropists in Qatar. The beneficiaries included the families of sponsored orphans, as well as vulnerable and displaced families in four Sudanese states. **media[433192]**The project targeted sponsored orphan households and vulnerable families in Port Sudan, Red Sea State; the cities of Kassala and Khashm Al Girba in Kassala State; the Al Qolid area in Northern State; as well as Sheikha Aisha bint Hamad Al Attiyah City in River Nile State. Fatima Ibrahim, deputy commissioner of the Humanitarian Aid Commission in Kassala State, praised Qatar Charity’s implementation of this project during her participation in the launch of the food-basket distribution.  Atiyat Abdullah, secretary of the Orphans Welfare Council in Kassala State, also commended Qatar Charity’s special attention to orphans and the association’s efforts in distributing the food baskets. Several mothers of orphans in Sheikha Aisha bint Hamad Al Attiyah City “Rofaqa,” a model experience for the care of orphans and their families in Sudan, expressed their appreciation for the generosity of philanthropists in Qatar in providing food baskets that include the essential items needed by every Sudanese family.  One sponsored orphan’s mother said: “I extend my thanks to the kind people in Qatar who provided us with food supplies that reached us at a time when we were in dire need.” Sponsored orphan Hajar al-Hilali added that distributing the baskets in eases families’ burdens and brings joy to them and to the sponsored orphans in the city.  Several mothers of sponsored orphans in the Northern State, upon receiving the food baskets in the Al Qolid area, noted that the baskets are of great importance considering the difficult economic conditions, which make obtaining food staples difficult and out of reach for many vulnerable families.  Qatar Charity’s team also distributed food baskets to one of the largest Qur'an memorisation centres in Northern State, as part of its commitment to reinforcing the values of generosity and social solidarity, alleviating the burdens of those most in need, and bringing relief to them.

The Food Security and Environment Committee of Qatar Chamber recently held a meeting to discuss the challenges facing the country’s private sector during the current regional developments.The meeting, presided over by Qatar Chamber board member Mohammed bin Ahmed al-Obaidli, who is also committee chairman, reviewed key proposals and solutions on the movement of trade, ensuring the flow of goods and products into the country.Representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Qatar Airways, and the General Authority of Customs, as well as a number of business owners and representatives of food companies attended the meeting.The agenda also included discussions on the measures taken by the public sector to address the current situation, their effectiveness and impact on the private sector, as well as mechanisms to tackle import-related challenges, rising prices, and increased shipping and operational costs.It also included ways to enhance the sustainability of local production and ensure the availability of essential goods under these circumstances, in addition to the role of GCC chambers in accelerating the flow of goods and services across GCC countries.Al-Obaidli lauded the public sector’s responsiveness in addressing private sector challenges, noting that the chamber has received several concerns related to transportation, logistics, and storage. He reviewed several key topics, such as the emergency plan, joint data on strategic storage and shared procurement.He underscored the chamber’s commitment to presenting the concerns of the private sector to the Federation of GCC Chambers to address them with the relevant authorities to expedite the movement of trade.Al-Obaidli further emphasised the pivotal role of the private sector during the current crisis and its commitment to working closely with government entities to address the challenges and repercussions arising from the situation.He noted that the chamber will launch several initiatives in the coming period, in collaboration with government agencies, aimed at facilitating procedures and enhancing coordination between the public and private sectors.Hamad al-Marri, director of the Land Transport Licensing Department at the Ministry of Transport, stated that the ministry has held several meetings with transport and logistics companies to identify the challenges facing the sector. He noted that several measures have been implemented, such as allowing empty Qatari trucks to enter neighbouring countries. He also praised the steps taken by GCC countries to facilitate truck movement.Yousef al-Hammadi, director of the Land Customs Department at the General Authority of Customs, stated that the authority is coordinating with GCC customs authorities to facilitate the smooth movement of commercial shipments through various ports and to meet local market demands efficiently amid current regional challenges.He added: “The authority has implemented a number of flexible and proactive measures to ensure the continuity of supply chains, most notably a recently issued circular temporarily allowing the use of copies of official documents for customs declarations until the original documents are submitted, thereby accelerating customs clearance procedures.”Ali al-Yafei from the Department of Specific Licensing and Market Control at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, affirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring the availability of goods in markets and facilitating their access through various outlets.He also reviewed the mechanisms for registering goods by companies through the goods and services registration system for monitoring purposes. Al-Yafei noted that the ministry, in co-operation with the private sector and in its capacity as a member of the committee responsible for overseeing the implementation of food security policies, and in co-ordination with the Civil Defense Council, has identified alternative supply routes monthly to ensure their readiness for use when needed.Al-Yafei further explained that the ministry has held several key meetings since the early stages of the crisis, including meetings with logistics companies across land, sea, and air transport, as well as with major suppliers of consumer goods and leading manufacturers.
