World number two Jannik Sinner made a seamless return to the ATP Tour on Monday, shrugging off the windy conditions in Doha to cruise past Tomas Machac in the opening round of the Qatar Open. In his first competitive appearance since his Australian Open title defense ended in the semi-finals, the Italian looked refreshed and ruthless, easing to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the 31st-ranked Czech. It was a convincing statement from the four-time Grand Slam champion, who showed no lingering effects from his recent loss to Novak Djokovic at Melbourne Park. Sinner was imperious behind his delivery, dropping just six points across nine service games throughout the contest. He raced through the opening set in under 30 minutes, dismantling Machac’s defenses with clinical precision before the Czech could find his footing. The second set proved to be a tighter affair as Machac began to grapple with the conditions and Sinner’s pace. The underdog managed an explosive start to the set and saved multiple match points in a gritty ninth game that featured scintillating winners from both sides of the net. However, a single break in the fifth game gave Sinner the advantage he needed. Despite needing five match points to finally close the door, the Italian sealed the win with a composed hold of serve. Speaking after the match, Sinner acknowledged the challenges posed by the weather. “Today was a little bit worse than yesterday,” Sinner said of the windy Doha conditions. “But you have to adapt to every situation and condition on the court. We also played a couple of matches before, so I knew a little [about] what to expect. I felt good on court today. Physically I feel good. Every match is going to get tougher, so hopefully I will be ready for the next one.” Sinner’s victory sets up a second-round clash with Alexei Popyrin. The Australian was equally dominant in his opener, sweeping aside Qatari wild card Mubarak Shannan Zayid 6-0, 6-2. With Carlos Alcaraz looming as the top seed this week, Sinner will look to maintain his high-efficiency form as he progresses through the draw. Elsewhere on Monday, resilience was the theme of the day as both Jakub Mensik and Arthur Fils booked their spots in the second round by rallying from a set down. Sixth seed Mensik fought past qualifier Jan Choinski 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4, while Fils overcame Kamil Majchrzak 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4, ensuring a competitive start to the week in Doha. On Tuesday, world number one Carlos Alcaraz takes on Top 30 star Arthur Rinderknech in his opening match in Doha. 

World number two Iga Swiatek and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina both crashed out of the Qatar Open on Thursday losing their quarter-finals to Maria Sakkari and Victoria Mboko respectively.Top seed Swiatek fell short against a revitalised Sakkari who rolled back the years as she clawed her way to a nervy 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory while 10th seed Mboko outmuscled Rybakina 7-5, 4-6, 6-4."It's been a while since I had a big win like today," said Sakkari, who reached No. 3 in the rankings in 2022 but has slipped to 52nd. "When you drop in the rankings and you're not playing good tennis you start doubting yourself and you think you are never going to beat those players again. So it's a huge process you have to go through in your head that you can do it."The 30-year-old Greek won her first three career meetings with the young Swiatek but the last of those victories came in 2021. The Pole had won their last four matches, the most recent in straight sets in Qatar last year. "Last year in the second round here against her, I was not confident, I was not believing in myself and this year it's different. I feel a lot better," said Sakkari who will now face either 14th seeded Czech Karolina Muchova or unseeded Russian Anna Kalinskaya,. "I've missed that feeling of going deep into tournaments."Swiatek, who won the Qatar tournament, a WTA 1000 event, in 2022, 2023 and 2024, started as if she would repeat last year's rout when she broke twice in the first set. Sakkari began to fight back in the last game, but Swiatek saved a break point to seal the set.Sakkari continued her upswing by breaking in the second game of the second set. Yet every time she gained an edge, Swiatek responded. The Pole broke in the seventh game, but Sakkari steadied and broke in the tenth game to take the set.It was the first time in their seven meetings that a match between the pair had gone to a third set. In a see-saw deciding set, Swiatek saved a match point on her serve before Sakkari held to love, the Greek going on to win in the next game, on her third match point.The match lasted one minute under two-and-a-half hours and was followed by an equally gripping contest as Mboko underlined her growing reputation in a contest that was just six minutes shorter. Mboko, who had already defeated Rybakina in last year's Montreal semifinals, managed to break the Kazakh's serve three times in the opening set alone.On the flip side she lost her own twice but that was still enough for her to take the first set 7-5. She dropped her serve twice again in the second set, which Rybakina won 6-4. But the 19-year-old Canadian had the last word in the final set, winning it 6-4.Mboko, who was swept aside by world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16 in Melbourne, will face last year's runner-up, Jelena Ostapenko in the Doha semifinals. The Latvian, who won the French Open in 2017, advanced by beating the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-4. 

Fourth seed Coco Gauff made an early exit from the WTA 1000 Qatar Open in Doha Tuesday after falling 6-4, 6-2 to Italian lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second round. Gauff’s departure was part of a string of upsets, with sixth seed Jasmine Paolini and eighth-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova also crashing out of the tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.Amid the surprises, however, two title contenders marched on with authority. World No 1 and top seed Iga Swiatek showed her class with a dominant display, while newly crowned Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina continued her strong run of form, both sealing comfortable victories to book their places in the last 16.American Gauff, who received a first-round bye, was also knocked out of the tournament in her opening match last year. The reigning French Open champion lost in an exhausting 5-7, 6-7 doubles match with Canadian Victoria Mboko on Monday, and her fatigue showed against the Italian as Gauff lost in just over 90 minutes.Cocciaretto will face Ann Li in the next round after only the third victory of her career against a top-10 ranked opponent. The world number 57 said she was inspired by her friend and skier Sofia Goggia, who took bronze in the women's downhill event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics at the weekend."We always send messages and FaceTime to talk about our sports and how you manage some things," she said of Goggia. "She gives me a lot of advice... I love how they (skiers) approach the sport. They have fear of nothing. They're focused a lot and they put themselves after everything."Former world number three Maria Sakkari saw off Paolini, also 6-4, 6-2, to set up a last-16 tie with Varvara Gracheva. Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko was another 6-4, 6-2 winner over Alexandrova.Swiatek dropped just eight points in the first set as she brushed aside Indonesia's Janice Tjen 6-0, 6-3 in her first match since losing in the Australian Open last eight to Rybakina. The six-time Grand Slam winner will play Daria Kasatkina for a place in the quarter-finals.She has won her last six meetings with the Russian-born Australian without dropping a set. "She can come to the match feeling that she has nothing to lose," said Swiatek of facing Kasatkina. "There are different ways the match can go, and I wouldn't say that focusing on the last results gives a lot. I'd rather stay ready for the challenge and not really think about the previous ones."Rybakina continued her fine form with a 6-2, 6-4 success against Wang Xinyu and will next face another Chinese player in Zheng Qinwen. World number three Rybakina has not played Zheng since a group-stage loss at the 2024 WTA Finals. Reigning Olympic gold medalist and world No 26 Zheng beat American upstart Alycia Parks, ranked No 77, in a gripping last 32 encounter.Rybakina is playing some of the best tennis of her career and the first set was more of the same as she took it for the loss of just two games. But Rybakina was made to work by the world No 227, who surprisingly broke at 2-2 in the second set, but was eventually pegged back by Rybakina at 4-4, allowing the Kazakh to eventually secure her safe passage into the next round with another break of serve shortly after.Australian Open semi-finalist Elina Svitolina and rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko also reached the third round.
