An emotional Mohamed Salah said "we put the club back where it belongs" after playing his final game for Liverpool on Sunday.A 1-1 draw at home to Brentford on the last day of the Premier League season marked the end of the Egyptian forward's nine-year spell at Anfield.Salah, 33, bid farewell alongside Scotland defender Andy Robertson, who also joined in 2017. Salah scored 257 goals for Liverpool, behind only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285) in the club's list of leading goalscorers.He has also won multiple trophies at the club including the Champions League and two Premier League titles."I think I cried more than in my whole life," Salah said after the Brentford match. "I'm not really an emotional guy. We lived our youth here, sharing everything from the beginning to the end," said Salah of the time he shared with Robertson at Anfield. "We put this club back where it belongs."Salah's departure was announced in March after he told reporters in December his relationship with Liverpool manager Arne Slot had broken down. And in a social media post following last week's defeat at Aston Villa, Salah said he wanted to see a return to "heavy metal football", referring to the approach under former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.But he still started the match against Brentford, with the names of both Salah and Robertson met with a deafening roar when introduced by the stadium announcer.Banners in the crowd celebrated both players, one saying "Thank you legends". Another said: "We Have Gone From Great To Glory. Salah Is Our King".Salah was the Premier League's top-scorer last season, with 29 goals, as Liverpool won the title, but his form dipped dramatically this term and he managed just seven goals in the league.The draw with Brentford, allied to Bournemouth's defeat by Manchester United, ensured Liverpool secured fifth position in the Premier League, guaranteeing the six-time European champions a place in next season's Champions League."It's tricky to leave Liverpool," said Salah, adding: "It's life. I look back and wonder if I would have wanted more than I achieved. Not really. We won it all. We see the love from the fans and this is the most important thing for me. I will be far away from here. I will be emotional every time. I hope the team stays in the position, fighting for everything."

Pep Guardiola said on Friday he feared he would run out of the energy required to lead Manchester City after announcing his glittering 10-year tenure as manager will come to an end.After amassing 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club's first Champions League, Guardiola will step aside following Sunday's match at home to Aston Villa."I think the club needs a new manager, new energy with these incredible players that we have right now and you start to write another chapter," said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference. "I feel I will not have the energy that requires, (matches) every three days, the expectations to fight for the titles, with being in front of the players."One of Guardiola's former assistants Enzo Maresca is reportedly set to take charge next season. Maresca, 46, has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in January, where he won the Club World Cup and Conference League in his only full season in charge.Guardiola will remain associated with the club as a global ambassador for the City Football Group. However, Guardiola ruled out an immediate return to the game in a coaching role.Since taking charge of Barcelona in 2008, the 55-year-old has had just one year out of the sport, when he took a sabbatical in New York before joining Bayern Munich in 2013. "I will not train for a while," added Guardiola."It's not 10 years. I've been, except for a year in New York, 17, 18 years, every three days, three days, three days, three days. I need to breathe a little bit, and relax. It'll be a while, that is my feeling right now."City announced that a stand at the Etihad Stadium will be named in Guardiola's honour and a statue has been commissioned of the Catalan. "It's been the experience of my life I would say, otherwise I would not be here 10 years," he said."I did my best, I gave everything, until the last drop of what I have. I am leaving with incredible peace, a sense of peace in my soul, that I gave everything to this club to be in a better position."City narrowly missed out on the Premier League title this season to Arsenal, managed by one of Guardiola's former assistants Mikel Arteta.But the City boss will depart with silverware in his final campaign after lifting both the League Cup and FA Cup.A parade through Manchester will take place on Monday to mark those achievements and Guardiola's legacy. 

Michael Carrick said he wanted to make Manchester United challengers for major trophies again after the club confirmed him as their new permanent head coach on a two-year contract on Friday.The former United midfielder and captain has overseen a dramatic improvement in form at Old Trafford since taking over following Ruben Amorim's acrimonious exit in January.Carrick secured Champions League football with three matches to spare and United wrapped up third spot with Sunday's 3-2 Premier League victory against Nottingham Forest – his 11th win in 16 games.The 44-year-old had been backed for the job by a number of players and has now been rewarded with a new deal. "Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach of the men's first team, having signed a new contract which will run to 2028," the club said in a statement on their website.Carrick won five Premier League titles and the Champions League among a cascade of trophies as a player at United under Alex Ferguson. But the club have have not mounted a realistic challenge for the Premier League since Ferguson retired as a champion in 2013, eclipsed as the dominant force in English football by neighbours Manchester City.Carrick said ever since he first arrived at United as a player 20 years ago he had felt the "magic" of the club. Now the former Middlesbrough boss, who has had previous coaching stints at United, wants to build on his achievements since January."It's good to make steps, good to get in the Champions League, good to finish third, but (I want) to make this place better," the ex-England international told club media."I must admit on Sunday in the stadium it felt a little bit different. There was a real togetherness and kind of enjoyment from everyone and that was powerful for me. Supporting Manchester United and looking forward to what can happen should always be like that. That's the drive (to win trophies) and for us to reward the fans would be pretty special."Carrick's deal takes him through to 2028, when United co-owners Ineos want to celebrate the club's 150th anniversary with the league title. The midfielder has the chance to become the first man to win the Premier League as both player and manager. I'd take that right now," Carrick said. "That's the goal and I've got to believe it. That's what we've got to aim for. It's where we want to be as a club."Director of football Jason Wilcox said the new permanent boss had impressed since taking the helm at Old Trafford. "Michael's achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated," he said."He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington (training ground) and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build."
