Another UEFA Champions League season gets going this week with the beginning of the league phase as Paris Saint-Germain bid to join the tiny band of clubs to have won the competition three years running.PSG successfully defended their title last season when they beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, retaining the trophy they won for the first time in their history 12 months earlier.Luis Enrique's side have already secured their status as one of the competition's greatest teams by winning it back-to-back, something only Real Madrid had previously achieved since the inception of the modern Champions League in 1992.Winning three in a row would be on another level entirely. Real did exactly that under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018, The only other teams to manage such a feat are Ajax (1971-73) and Bayern Munich (1974-76), while Madrid also won the first five editions of the European Cup from 1956 to 1960."Our objectives are clear. I want to win important trophies and there are none more important than the Champions League," said Enrique, who also led Barcelona to glory in 2015.The back-to-back titles for the French giants have coincided with the introduction of the new Champions League format, with 36 teams in the league phase now playing eight games against eight different opponents. The Parisians struggled in the league phase in each of the last two campaigns, finishing outside the top eight and having to come through the additional play-off round to make the last 16.Tough draws were partly responsible for that, and PSG will face some familiar opponents this time in Manchester City, Barcelona and Aston Villa. With each passing year, the prospect of a team other than one of Europe's super clubs winning the Champions League seems more remote. Arsenal to take next step?The Premier League's financial strength means all of its representatives can be expected to feature prominently, with Arsenal chief among them. Over the last three years, the Gunners have lost in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and then the final. There is therefore a logical next step for Mikel Arteta's side,Arsenal topped the league phase last season with a perfect record. They have a tough start this time away to Napoli. There are five English clubs involved, with Manchester City and Liverpool joined by the returning Manchester United and Villa.Bayern Munich are formidable, while Jose Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid charged with the task of leading them back to continental glory. Barcelona are itching to get their hands on the trophy again. It is hard to see beyond one of those clubs, although Inter Milan could have a say and Atletico Madrid will be desperate to reach a final to be held in their stadium.The only club outside Spain, England, Germany, Italy and France to have won the Champions League in the last 30 years remains Mourinho's Porto in 2004. Plenty of new names will add freshness to the competition, including Como, who finished fourth in Serie A last season under Cesc Fabregas to qualify at the expense of AC Milan and Juventus.Viking Stavanger are in the Champions League proper for the first time after winning a first Norwegian title in 34 years. Sabah start with a trip to Old Trafford after winning a first Azerbaijani title and coming through four qualifying ties.Their manager, Valdas Dambrauskas, got into coaching with the money he made appearing on the Lithuanian version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. "Since I was 12, when I realised I will not be a professional player, I knew I wanted to be a football coach," he said. "I cannot guess what would have happened without this game, but I believe I would have found a way to achieve my dream."Sabah might not qualify for the next stage – although compatriots Qarabag did that last season – but just being in the league phase is worth almost 20mn euros ($23.2mn) at a minimum, significant sums for clubs from lesser leagues.The Champions League winners pocket around 90mn euros in prize money, before adding millions more, notably from television 2 it is understood PSG earned around 150mn euros for each of their last two victories. 

Arsenal delivered an emphatic response to Chelsea's emergence as potential Premier League title contenders with a 2-1 win that ended their rivals' unbeaten start yesterday.Mikel Arteta's side trailed to Morgan Rogers' second-minute goal in a pulsating London derby at the Emirates Stadium. But the champions showed why they are firm favourites to retain the title with a blistering response to that early setback.Kai Havertz bagged the equaliser against his former club midway through the first half and Martin Odegaard netted Arsenal's winner soon after the interval. It was a statement of intent from second-placed Arsenal, who have won all three league matches to sit behind leaders Manchester City on goal scored.The Gunners' mature display underlined their desire to win the club's first back-to-back titles since the 1930s. For Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, the defeat ended his three-game winning run in all competitions since taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the close-season.Alonso will realise just how much work Chelsea still have to do before they are in position to end a title drought dating back to 2017. Chelsea's shaky defence is prone to costly miscues, while their vaunted attack found it harder to flourish against Arsenal than in their free-scoring wins over Fulham, Luton and Brighton.Arteta and Alonso have known each other since their days as childhood friends in the Basque region of Spain. The chaotic matches of their youth on a gravel pitch in the Berio district of San Sebastian would have seemed calm in comparison to the blood and thunder their teams brought to a raucous corner of north London.Chelsea beat Arsenal in the race to sign Rogers from Aston Villa in the close-season after the Gunners refused to match the Blues' £117mn ($158mn) bid for the England midfielder. Rogers showed why Chelsea made him the most expensive British player in history as he put the Blues ahead after just 77 seconds.Arsenal's rock-solid defence had allowed just one shot on target in their first two games. So often masters of the set-piece, Arteta's men were found wanting at a free-kick for once.Reece James' lofted delivery wasn't cleared by Declan Rice or Odegaard, giving Rogers the chance to drive a low volley past David Raya from the edge of the penalty area. It was the first goal conceded by Arsenal this season.Having conceded five times in their first two league games under Alonso, Chelsea's three-man central defence remains flawed and they were exposed again in the 25th minute. Havertz was allowed to drift from the right flank to the edge of the area unchecked by Jorrel Hato before the German smashed a low strike through the slow to react Maxence Lacroix's legs and past Emiliano Martinez at his near post.Pedro Neto was inches away from restoring Chelsea's lead just before half-time when the Portugal winger slapped his shot against the far post. Where Chelsea were profligate, Arsenal have developed a ruthless touch in front of goal.They exploited Chelsea's weakness at the back to net with a superb-crafted move in the 50th minute. Christos Tzolis has made an impressive start following his close-season move from Club Brugge and the Greek winger's incisive pass sliced through the Chelsea defence to Havertz.The German's clever dummy let the ball run through to Odegaard and he kept his composure to slot home from 10 yards.Rogers' angry clash with Rice prompted mocking chants of "you should have signed for a big club" from Arsenal fans. Chelsea had chances to silence the taunts, but Malo Gusto blazed over from a good position before Estevao Willian's rocket was tipped over by Raya in the final minutes.Earlier, Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a superb strike with virtually the last kick of the game to snatch a 2-2 draw for the Toffees against Manchester United.Maitland-Niles's arrival from Lyon on the final day of the transfer window was overshadowed by Everton's failure to reinforce their attack. But the former Arsenal full-back lasered a long-range shot into the top corner in the 96th minute to punish a lacklustre United performance.Bryan Mbeumo fired United in front inside the first minute of the second period. But an Everton side short on attacking options rallied to level through Tyrique George.Substitute Benjamin Sesko's header looked to have won United all three points. But the decision not to reinforce Michael Carrick's defence will face more scrutiny as United have conceded twice in all of their opening three games of the Premier League season. 

Bruno Fernandes starred with a hat-trick in Manchester United's 5-2 rout of Ipswich, while Chelsea extended Xabi Alonso's perfect start with a thrilling 4-3 win against Brighton.Fernandes shone as he ensured United bounced back from their humiliating 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.Boss Michael Carrick was in danger of another embarrassing loss to a promoted club when Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead at Old Trafford with a 29th minute strike that cannoned in off the crossbar. But the Fernandes show started in the 40th minute after Marcelino Nunez's slip allowed Matheus Cunha to pick out the United captain for a sumptuous finish.United went in front in the 56th minute when Jacob Greaves was presured into an own goal. Greaves deflected Harry Maguire's shot into his own net, with Ipswich's appeals for handball against the United defender snubbed by VAR.Completing a miserable five minutes for Greaves, the Ipswich defender conceded a penalty with his foul on Cunha and United captain Fernandes stepped up to slot home from the spot.Fernandes sealed his treble in the 68th minute, sweeping in from close-range after Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo had shots blocked.It was Fernandes's second league hat-trick for United following his treble against Leeds five years ago.Fernandes was not finished and Bryan Mbeumo scored from his pass with a lob that clipped the bar and dropped over the line in the 82nd minute. Chuba Akpom's stoppage-time tap-in was little consolation for out-classed Ipswich, who were beaten for the first time since returning to the top-flight."It was a massive result for us. We lost three points last week. First game at home, the fans have been waiting for this," Fernandes said. "Scoring goals is the best feeling in football. Doing a hat-trick at home with our fans is something I'm proud of. I hope I can do much more and help my team-mates score too."Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all scored when Alonso's reign as Chelsea boss kicked off with a 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday.And Pedro and Palmer were back on target, while Rogers teed up Chelsea's second goal, scored by Pedro Neto, as the Blues held off a rally from Brighton at Stamford Bridge.Emiliano Martinez made his Chelsea debut in goal just hours after sealing his move from Aston Villa. But there was no place for his Argentina team-mate Enzo Fernandez, who could still leave Chelsea for Manchester City before Tuesday's transfer deadline."We have to be aware until Tuesday evening what is going to develop. We're not sure. We are preparing for all scenarios," Alonso said of Fernandez. "I'm sure that, whatever happens, from Wednesday we will have a good enough squad to compete in the Premier League."Romeo Lavia profited from a mix-up between Bart Verbruggen and Mats Wieffer to prod in Chelsea's opening goal from a corner. Neto then turned in Rogers's cross before Pedro rounded off a brilliant Chelsea counter-attack that began inside their own box.Martinez was beaten moments later by a blistering volley from Malick Yalcouye. Pedro turned Pascal Gross's cross into his own net just after the hour mark.A moment of genius from Palmer eased Chelsea's nerves as he curled into the bottom corner from outside the area after a fine solo rune. Gross headed in a stoppage-time consolation for Brighton, but Chelsea join Manchester City and Hull as the only sides to take six points from their opening two games.Brentford were on course to also maintain their perfect start when Kevin Schade's audacious flick opened the scoring away to Leeds.But Dominic Calvert-Lewin turned in Lukas Nmecha's driven cross to salvage a point and Leeds's unbeaten start to the campaign.Sunderland got off the mark with a 1-0 victory over Fulham thanks to Wilson Isidor's winner 15 minutes from time. 

Liverpool's owners have agreed to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club to a consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.US-based Fenway Sports Group, owners of the 20-time English champions, said they had agreed the deal with 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by British-Indian millionaire Amit Bhatia and also featuring Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, who co-founded Facebook.According to reports, the stake acquired by the consortium is around one-third of the club. American tycoon Bezos is the fourth-richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $256bn.Bezos is not expected to join Liverpool's expanded board of directors, which will reportedly feature Bhatia as the Premier League club's vice-chairman. But Bryan Baum, founder of the venture capital firm K5 Sports, which Bezos is using to invest in Liverpool, is set to become an Anfield board member, alongside Saverin's wife Elaine."Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club's long-term interests in mind. That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world," FSG president Mike Gordon said Friday."As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special."The deal is believed to place Liverpool's value at between £5bn ($6.8bn) and £6bn. It is Bezos's first investment in a sports team after he was previously linked with purchasing NFL franchises Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has extensive experience of football boardrooms after serving as QPR co-owner for 18 years before stepping away from the English Championship club once his Liverpool link became public knowledge."We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG. We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield," Bhatia said."To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come."FSG underlined they would retain control of decision-making at Anfield, saying the stake sale would "support Liverpool's long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment"The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club's leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club's objectives on and off the pitch. FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool."FSG bought Liverpool for £300mn in 2010 and sold a minority stake of around three percent to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity three years ago.Liverpool start their Premier League campaign at Newcastle on August 23. They are looking to bounce back from a disappointing fifth place finish in the top-flight last season.That failure led to Arne Slot being sacked as Liverpool manager just 12 months after he masterminded the club's Premier League title triumph in his first season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp. With several weeks until the Premier League transfer window closes, the new investment could be a boost to Reds boss Andoni Iraola as he looks to strengthen his squad for the new season.Liverpool have so far spent around £94mn on signing Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz since the end of last term. 

Manchester City's new signing Elliot Anderson said he is determined to justify his hefty transfer fee and hopes to make an immediate impact when the FA Cup winners face Premier League champions Arsenal in Sunday's Community Shield.The 23-year-old joined City from Nottingham Forest in July in a deal British media reported could rise to 116 million pounds ($156.66 million), making him the second-most expensive British player."I'm over the moon," Anderson told reporters after his first training session under new manager Enzo Maresca. "The lads have welcomed me really well and training went well."The England international could make his debut against Arsenal just days after arriving at the club. The midfielder said he was aware of the scrutiny attached to his price tag but was determined to let his performances do the talking."It is a chance to win a trophy in your first week," Anderson said. "I want to show everyone what I can do. I try not to focus on it too much, but I'm sure over the next season I can show people what I do best."Anderson said Maresca's attention to detail had already stood out in their early sessions together and expects to learn more about his role in the coming weeks. While he sees himself primarily as a box-to-box midfielder, Anderson believes he can offer more."I've got a bit of everything. I can defend well, I can attack, so I'll just try and give everything I've got to help the club," he said.Manchester City, who finished second last season in the Premier League, will begin their campaign against Bournemouth on August 23.Man City sign Argentina goalkeeper Rulli from MarseilleMeanwhile, Manchester City have signed Argentina international goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year deal, both clubs announced. The 34-year-old will serve as City's number-two goalkeeper behind Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma."This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp," said Rulli, who returns for a second spell at City having spent the 2016/17 season at the Etihad without making a first team appearance."When the chance to join Manchester City comes along you have to go for it. Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City's success over a long time has been impressive. Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards. My job now is to train hard, get to know the players and staff and do everything I can to reach my best level."Rulli has won eight caps for Argentina and was in the squad that won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America and reached last month's World Cup final in which they lost to Spain.He previously played for European clubs including Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier and Ajax. He famously scored a penalty in Villarreal's 2021 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, before denying opposite number David de Gea to claim the trophy 11-10 in the shootout.Having been fined 10 million euros for failing to meet UEFA break-even targets, Marseille have to sell players this summer to balance its books. Marseille's fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 during the 2025-2026 season also means the club will not participate in the lucrative Champions League.On Tuesday, Marseille announced the departure of another Argentine player, defender Facundo Medina, to Bayer Leverkusen after just one season with the club.Marseille had previously parted ways with some of its highest earners, such as English forward Mason Greenwood, who left for Fenerbahce, and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who headed to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña. 

A Sri Lankan court ordered Friday that the Indian co-owner of a Lanka Premier League (LPL) team, charged with attempting to bribe five players for match-fixing, be held in prison till the end of the month.Manjot Kalra was arrested at a hotel in the capital, Colombo as he was allegedly "about to pay" a player 9.5 million rupees ($28,700), inspector Supun Vidanage of the Sports Investigation Unit said.Four other Sri Lankan players were also approached by Kalra 10 days before his arrest Vidanage added.An accomplice of Kalra will also remain in police custody until the end of the month pending further investigation.Sri Lanka Cricket, the governing body of the sport on the island, said the domestic T20 tournament would go ahead as planned on Friday night in the capital. KALRA CO-OWNER OF JAFFNAThe opening match of the tournament, now in its sixth edition, is between the Jaffna and Galle teams. Kalra is a co-owner of the Jaffna team."Sri Lanka Cricket reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of the tournament and will not tolerate any form of corruption, misconduct or foul play by any stakeholder associated with the league," Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.Previous LPL tournaments have also been marred with allegations of corruption.Bangladesh-born Tamim Rahman, owner of Dambulla Thunders, admitted in January to attempting to influence a player and organise match fixing.Rahman was handed a four-year jail term and suspended for five years. He was also fined 24 million rupees.The conviction was in line with a strict 2019 law aimed at preventing corruption in sport in Sri Lanka. 

Manchester United have secured the majority of the land needed to build their proposed new 100,000-capacity stadium.United announced on Monday that they had acquired a 25-acre (10 hectare) site close to their current Old Trafford home.The land purchase is a major step forward in United's plans to build Britain's biggest sporting arena.The triangular-shaped plot 350 metres to the north west of Old Trafford means adjacent land owned by Freightliner will not be required.The location of the nearby freight terminal had previously been a complicating factor.Collette Roche, chief executive of the new stadium development, said: "Today's news highlights the progress we're making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development."Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans."Securing the right land for our new home has been absolutely critical and the land we've acquired gives us the stage to deliver a truly world-class stadium that honours our past and is ready for our future."United first unveiled plans for their ambitious £2 billion ($2.6 billion) stadium in 2025.The venue will be the centre-piece of a wider 370-acre regeneration project featuring 15,000 new homes and creating 48,000 new jobs locally and 90,000 nationally.A master-plan for the Old Trafford regeneration is scheduled to be unveiled on July 9.United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said it was a "no-brainer" to rebuild Old Trafford after buying a stake in the club in 2024.United have played at Old Trafford for 115 years but the 74,000-capacity stadium has fallen into disrepair in recent years.  

Cody Gakpo faced flak from Liverpool fans as their Premier League title defence imploded but at the World Cup he is proving to be the man for the big occasion with his country.The forward set up Brian Brobbey for the opening goal and grabbed two himself in the second half as the Netherlands dismantled Sweden 5-1 in Houston on Saturday.After being held 2-2 by Japan, it gave Ronald Koeman's side liftoff at the tournament in North America and put them on the brink of the last 32.In a Group F encounter packed with top Premier League attacking talent, including Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres for Sweden, Gakpo topped the billing."He's an outstanding footballer," Netherlands and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said of his Anfield team-mate."He works so hard for the team, he's disciplined for the team, his quality stands out -- his crosses, his assists, his goals."Playing off the left, the 27-year-old Gakpo used his pace and power to skip down the inside and provide a pinpoint low cross for Brobbey to score after only five minutes.With the Dutch leading 2-0 at the break after a second from Brobbey, Gakpo effectively killed off Sweden two minutes after the restart as he stole in to prod home from close range.He grabbed his second seven minutes later, profiting from more lax Sweden defending to turn inside onto his right foot and lash the ball past an exposed Kristoffer Nordfeldt.'FREEDOM'Gakpo, who can also play in a central role in attack, scored seven times in 36 games in the league last season as Liverpool miserably failed to retain their domestic crown.Manager Arne Slot was subsequently sacked, and Gakpo did not escape criticism either, at times looking short of confidence and failing to consistently impact matches.Some Liverpool fans derided him as a hard-working but limited player.It did not help that Slot appeared not sure how to best use his attacking options that also included Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and the fast-emerging Rio Ngumoha.But Gakpo is a different beast for the Dutch, especially on the biggest stages. 23 GOALS IN 52 MATCHESHe has 23 goals and 12 assists in 52 appearances for his country since making his debut five years ago.Still then a bit of an unknown quantity to global football fans, he scored in all three group games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.That heralded a move from PSV Eindhoven to Anfield for a reported initial fee of £37 million (now $50 million).Under countryman Slot, Gakpo scored 10 times as Liverpool won the Premier League in the coach's first season in 2024-25.Yet there has always been a nagging feeling that it is for his country that he hits his best form.He was joint top scorer at the 2024 Euros with three goals as the Netherlands lost in the semi-finals to England.After turning it on once more to help destroy the Swedes on Saturday, Gakpo was asked about his role with his country versus that with his club."A good question. Obviously it's a little bit different," he replied."It's different where the coach wants me to be, the freedom I have (compared to) at Liverpool."Perhaps it helps that, in contrast to at Liverpool, Koeman has made it clear that Gakpo is one of his main men.The captain Van Dijk said: "He's very important for us, we want him to stay like that." 

Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey both scored twice as the rampant Netherlands thrashed Sweden 5-1 in a World Cup warning Saturday in Houston.The big win in front of nearly 69,000 put the delighted Dutch on the cusp of the knockout rounds and gave them liftoff after being held by Japan.Ronald Koeman's side top Group F with four points from two games, ahead of Sweden on three, Japan (one) and Tunisia (none).Despite the sobering loss the Swedes had plenty of chances but were denied by good goalkeeping and wasteful finishing.They are still in with a good chance of progressing into the last 32.Sunderland striker Brobbey got his first start of the tournament and repaid Koeman with predatory goals after five and 17 minutes.Before that the 24-year-old had scored only once for his country since making his debut three years ago.In a game full of top Premier League talent, Liverpool's Gakpo - who set Brobbey up for the opener - scored twice early in the second half.Substitute Anthony Elanga pulled one back for Sweden just before the hour with a classy finish.Crysencio Summerville had the last word for the five-star Dutch.Two crew members from the historic Artemis II lunar mission were among the VIP guests, a nod to Houston's place as the home of space flight.The Dutch, twice pegged back in a lively 2-2 draw with Japan to start their title bid, made the brighter start in front of their orange-clad fans and King Willem-Alexander.Brobbey, who came in for Summerville despite the winger scoring against Japan, started and finished the first goal.It was made in the Premier League, with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Gakpo all involved.Brobbey exchanged passes with Gakpo, before the Anfield attacker crossed in low from the left for his team-mate to stab in from close range.Sweden, who thrashed Tunisia 5-1 in their first game, could not handle Brobbey's muscular presence.Up front the much-vaunted attack of Liverpool's Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres of Arsenal were feeding on scraps for Sweden. Gakpo's halfTwelve minutes after his opener Brobbey made it 2-0 when a deflected Denzel Dumfries cross from the right fell perfectly into his path and he toe-poked past Kristoffer Nordfeldt.Sweden's English coach Graham Potter was in deep discussions with his backroom staff as the game threatened to run away from them.At the unpopular hydration break Potter made a beeline for left-sided defender Gabriel Gudmundsson of Leeds United, who was being overrun by the flying Dumfries and Donyell Malen.Sweden then had their best chance, Gyokeres crossing for an unmarked Yasin Ayari who completely miscontrolled the ball with his chest.Gyokeres was next to fluff a good chance, failing to make proper contact after being played in by the largely anonymous Isak.Gyokeres and Ayari twice both had further sights of goal, only to be denied by the increasingly overworked Verbruggen.The Netherlands were hanging on by end of the half.Koeman sent on Summerville for Malen at the break, and two minutes later it was mission impossible for Sweden, Gakpo prodding in from close range after yet another dangerous low cross from Dumfries.All three goals were strikingly similar.Gakpo scored a lovely fourth on 54 minutes, turning inside his defender before firing low into the bottom corner.Nottingham Forest winger Elanga pulled one back five minutes later when he raced clear of the Dutch defence and rattled the ball past Verbruggen.West Ham's Summerville made it five in the dying minutes with his second goal in North America.Sweden face Japan next while the Netherlands play Tunisia.
