Ronaldo suspended by Portugal FA after leaving camp, criticizing coach

After saying he deserved to be disciplined, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo got what he asked for Saturday when he provisionally was suspended by his national team.The Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) opened disciplinary proceedings against the team captain after he walked out of camp during the just-completed international break following a miscommunication with head coach Jorge Jesus.In a letter that was revealed this week, Ronaldo said he was told by Jesus he would be used as a substitute in a Nations League match against Norway. Ronaldo warmed up along the sideline but did not see playing time.Before the following match against Denmark, the 41-year-old striker departed camp after notifying the federation he was leaving."Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026," PFF said in a statement.Ronaldo already has returned to his club team, Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, and scored a goal in a 3-0 victory over Diriyah on Friday. RONALDO SAID DECISION TO LEAVE CAMP NOT THE BEST WAYIn his explanation of his actions, Ronaldo admitted that his decision to leave camp was not the best way to handle the situation. But he added that Jesus "broke his word" on more than one occasion."I owe my national team teammates an apology for leaving the training camp," Ronaldo said. "Despite the absolute breach of trust in the coach's word, as anyone who witnessed our conversations can testify, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine."After just participating in his sixth World Cup for Portugal this past summer, Ronaldo said he is open to discipline. According to reports, the federation's regulations call for a suspension of anywhere from a month to six months for a player who "abandons" national team activity."The consequence of my actions should be assessed and punished by the (federation)," Ronaldo said. "The punishment should not have any mitigating circumstances. I am not just any player; I am the captain of the team, and that constitutes an aggravating factor."After playing in 234 matches for his national team, while scoring 146 goals, Ronaldo said he still has the desire to play for Portugal in the future. Portugal has Nations League matches scheduled against Denmark and Wales next month.

Portugal rose two spots to No. 5 in the updated FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, becoming the only top-10 team to improve its position.

Ronaldo can return to Portugal team if he wants: coach Jesus

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo can return to the squad if he wishes, despite walking out on his team-mates, said national team coach Jorge Jesus on Sunday. Jesus said Ronaldo can come back into the fold "if he wants to" after the team beat Norway without the veteran attacker to reach the Nations League quarter-finals. The dispute began last week when Jesus left 41-year-old Ronaldo on the bench for Portugal's first win over Norway. Ronaldo subsequently walked out on the squad on Wednesday after learning he would not start against Denmark. "For me, Cris, in the next call-up, if he's playing at Al-Nassr, he'll be a player who can be called up," Jesus told reporters, referring to Ronaldo's Saudi club side. "If he wants to, he'll return to the national team." The coach said if Ronaldo wishes to speak to him before Portugal's next matches in November, that would happen."If he wants to, as we did before this call-up, we talked before the call-up, we can talk before the next call-up," continued Jesus. "But Cris is the one who's going to decide."   Former Real Madrid and Manchester United attacker Ronaldo is Portugal's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.Jesus said he had told Ronaldo he needed him in the squad for his first games at the helm after replacing Roberto Martinez following the 2026 World Cup."Cristiano should end his time in the national team the way he wants, he's the one who will decide how he wants it," said Jesus.  "That's how we talked, the two of us -- I said, 'I need you'. In my first call-up, I said, 'I need you, I need you to be close to me, playing or not playing, I need you'. And now I'm saying the same thing."  Ronaldo, who made his Portugal debut in 2003 at the age of 18, has said this will "probably" be his final year in football.The forward has been a fixture of the national team for more than two decades and has played at six World Cups.  In Ronaldo's absence Portugal became the first team to secure a place in the quarter-finals, with two group games still to play.Ronaldo's long-time rival for the title of the world's best player, Lionel Messi, will play his final match for Argentina in a friendly against Benin in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

Portugal win without Ronaldo as Klopp's Germany get first victory

Portugal shrugged off the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and turned on the style to win 4-2 in Denmark in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday, while Germany beat Serbia 2-0 to give Jurgen Klopp his first win as coach. The controversy surrounding Ronaldo's departure from the Portugal squad on Wednesday overshadowed the match in Copenhagen, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's future in international football now in serious doubt. Coach Jorge Jesus said before kick-off that he just wanted his side "to focus on the match", and they did not appear distracted as they scored some superb goals to win the Group A4 clash at the Parken Stadium. AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos scored Portugal's winner in Norway on Sunday after being preferred to Ronaldo in attack, and here he set up Joao Cancelo for Portugal's early opener before getting their second goal on 25 minutes. Mikkel Damsgaard curled in a fine goal in between for Denmark, and Rasmus Hojlund scored their second equaliser shortly after half-time. However, Vitinha headed in a superb Bruno Fernandes cross to put Portugal back in front midway through the second half, and Joao Felix -a club colleague of Ronaldo's at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia - finished off a superb move to seal Portugal's victory. "A victory of the highest quality," said Jesus. "This Portugal team scored four goals and put in a performance which, in my opinion, was of a very high standard - and that cannot be overlooked. "Of course, this is more important than anything else that has happened." Wales beat Norway 2-1 in the same group in Cardiff, despite Fulham's Oscar Bobb giving the visitors an early lead. Goals by Daniel James and Neco Williams turned the game around for Wales, while Norway had Torbjorn Heggem sent off at the start of the second half. Portugal, who are the defending Nations League champions, are top of the group with the maximum nine points from three games before entertaining Norway in Porto on Sunday. Klopp's first two matches in charge of Germany had ended in a draw in the Netherlands and a defeat at home to Greece, but it was third time lucky as his side saw off Serbia in Munich. Bayern Munich's Tom Bischof, playing at home, opened the scoring late in the first half and Liverpool's Florian Wirtz sealed the win with a brilliantly-taken goal just past the hour mark. "The mix of football and attitude was top level today. I told the boys that this has to be our benchmark," Klopp told public broadcaster ZDF. Germany's next game is away in Greece, who top Group A2 with seven points from three outings after a 2-2 draw at home to the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The home side were two ahead at half-time with goals by Fotis Ioannidis and Giorgos Masouras, but skipper Virgil van Dijk pulled one back just before the hour. Substitute Tijjani Reijnders then grabbed an 89th-minute leveller for Xavi Hernandez's Dutch side, who are second in the group on five points and complete this international window at home to pointless Serbia in Eindhoven on Sunday. Elsewhere, Troy Parrott scored twice, including a stunning solo effort, as Ireland drew 2-2 at home with Austria in a game briefly interrupted on two occasions by protests. Parrott, of Real Betis, opened the scoring in style after 12 minutes of the Group B3 encounter in Dublin, before tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch by those protesting Ireland's games against Israel, forcing a break in play. Later in the first half a man carrying a Palestinian flag got on the pitch before being stopped by security. Parrott scored again from the penalty spot to double Ireland's lead by the interval, but second-half goals by Alexander Prass and Michael Gregoritsch earned Austria a draw. Ralf Rangnick's team top the section with seven points, three more than both Ireland and Kosovo, who drew 0-0 with Israel in a game played in Hungary.

Saying Portugal's national team needs "a new voice," manager Roberto Martinez confirmed he is stepping down after the 1-0 loss to Spain on Monday in their round of 16 match in Arlington, Texas.Martinez has coached Portugal since 2023 and ‌planned to leave his post after the team's run to what he hoped was a World ‌Cup championship. His contract was due to expire after the tournament. "Yes, this ‌is my last game with the ‌national team," said Martinez, a native ‌of Spain who turns 53 on July 13. "I'm proud. I've had 45 games, and I felt welcomed in Portugal and loved. It's a memory I'll take with me always. "It was a pleasure, a source of pride and responsibility. It's hard, but it's the end of a cycle and in the context it makes absolute sense." Martinez said, "It's important to have a new voice now" and added that it was fair for Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca, who was appointed last year, to be able to choose his own manager. "I want to thank the president and the board for their support and for providing me and my coaching staff with all the necessary ‌conditions," Martinez said. "I appreciate their strength and support, but it is the end of a cycle."Portugal is a co-host of the 2030 World Cup along with Spain and Morocco and is automatically qualified.Martinez managed Belgium's national team from 2016-22 and also coached Everton, Swansea City and Wigan Athletic. He led Portugal to the 2024 European Championship quarterfinals, then the UEFA Nations League title in June 2025.Portugal finished second in this World Cup in Group K, going 1-0-2 (5 points) with a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan and draws against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1-1) and group winner Colombia (0-0). Last Thursday, Portugal held off Croatia 2-1 in the round of 32 before elimination on Monday, which ‌also marked the final World Cup ‌game for legendary attacker Cristiano Ronaldo, 41. "We didn't fail," Martinez said. "We lost a game against a team that's one of the favorites. We showed incredible individual talent. Winning or losing is about details in the big games, with big teams. ... You fail when you don't try to win, and we tried to win until the last minute."Martinez said to those thinking Ronaldo should have been subbed for late in the game that he was physically capable of playing at least 90 minutes and delivering the needed goal."This is not the time to look for anything beyond the fact that we are talking about a football icon," Martinez said of Ronaldo."There aren't many Cristiano Ronaldos. I will forever appreciate what he tried to do in this World Cup, because his dream was to win it. He was an incredible example of a captain, both on a footballing level and a human level. "His impact inside the dressing room and within the group of players is something the entire coaching staff ‌and all the players will carry with us forever. He is an example of football, of an athlete and of the human being behind the athlete."

Cristiano Ronaldo bids adieu to World Cup with 'clear conscience'

Cristiano Ronaldo was tearful after the last game of his sixth and final World Cup, Portugal's 1-0 loss to Spain in the round of 16 on Monday ‌decided by Mikel Merino's stoppage-time winner. But the five-time Ballon d'Or winner insisted -- ‌just as he did Sunday before the match -- that ‌in the big picture, ‌he remains secure in ‌his legacy with his national team. "Well, it's normal, sad, to leave the World Cup like this," Ronaldo said through an interpreter. "But, as I said yesterday at the press conference, I gave it my all, I gave my best. And I leave with a clear conscience. "That's football, that's the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. And it has to move on. It was my last World Cup, yes, but the rest ... I have time to think, be with ‌my family, not make decisions in the heat of the moment and move on with life."Ronaldo will retire without a World Cup title or even a World Cup final appearance to his name. His team's best performance with Portugal came in his first appearance, a 2006 run to the semifinals and a fourth-place finish.But by any standard, he still finished as one of the tournament's all-time great performers, scoring 11 times in 27 matches and joining Argentina's 39-year-old Lionel Messi -- ‌whose team plays Tuesday -- ‌as the only men to play in six World Cups.He was arguably better in the European Championships, where he scored 14 times in 30 matches and helped the Selecao das Quinas to the 2016 title."Before Cristiano, Portugal hadn't won any titles," he said. "So, I'm happy. The truth is that the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016, which for me has the same significance as the World Cup, honestly."Therefore, I repeat, I leave with a clear conscience, having done my best, and that's it. Tomorrow will be a new day, and life goes on."Ronaldo is under contract for one more season with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, the club where he's spent the past ‌four seasons. This coming season may be his last, though that has not been confirmed.

Ronaldo 'won't make rash decisions' following last World Cup game

Cristiano Ronaldo said that he won't rush into a decision about his future following Portugal's exit to Spain in his last World Cup match on Monday.The 41-year-old Portugal great said on the eve of the last-16 encounter, which his team lost 1-0, that this was his final World Cup.Asked afterwards about what comes next, he said: "It was my last World Cup, yes, but I'll have time to think about the rest, to be with my family, not make rash decisions, and just get on with life." The Portugal captain and one of the best footballers in history, said: "That's football, that's the life of a footballer."Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to move on." Ronaldo, the leading scorer in the history of men's international football, said he would leave the World Cup stage "with a clear conscience"."The truth is, the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros), which for me is just as significant as a World Cup, honestly," he said."That's why, I repeat, I'm leaving with a clear conscience, at my best, and that's it. Tomorrow is a new day, and life goes on."Ronaldo was a European champion with Portugal a decade ago but never tasted World Cup glory, the high point a semi-final 20 years ago.

Spain win it late to bid farewell to Ronaldo at World Cup

Substitute Mikel Merino scored a late winner to put Spain in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Portugal and end Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career on Monday.The European champions will face the United States -- the only one of the co-hosts remaining -- or Belgium on Friday in Los Angeles.In front of an expectant crowd of 70,649 at the air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys, a match that on paper promised so much failed to really deliver.Extra time looked certain, before fellow substitute Ferran Torres slipped in Merino to settle the contest in the first minute of injury time.It meant a sour final World Cup match for the 41-year-old Ronaldo, now playing in Saudi Arabia, having confirmed on the eve of the encounter that this would be his last dance on football's biggest stage.The neighbours came into the contest both unbeaten, but while Portugal had not been entirely convincing, Spain had not even conceded a goal in the tournament.One of the pre-tournament favourites, they still haven't.For all their pedigree, talent and history, Spain have only lifted the World Cup once, in 2010, while Portugal's best was third place in 1966.In Ronaldo and Spain's 18-year-old Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal, the last-16 showdown was touted as a showcase of two extraordinary talents at opposite ends of their careers.There was a sombre moment shortly before kickoff when a black-and-white image of the late Portugal forward Diogo Jota flashed up on the giant screen that looms over the field.RONALDO CHEERED, JEEREDSpain should have been ahead with less than 10 minutes gone when Dani Olmo played in Mikel Oyarzabal but with only goalkeeper Diogo Costa to beat, he somehow pulled it well wide.Portugal skipper Ronaldo had his first chance to add to his three goals in North America, stinging the palms of goalkeeper Unai Simon from a tight angle.Luis de la Fuente's Spain cranked up the pressure, Yamal and Alex Baena testing Costa twice in quick succession, the second a wonderful fingertip save.Ronaldo -- jeered and cheered in equal measure -- was a marginal presence in the central attacking role he now occupies in the twilight of his career.Portugal ended the half on top and Roberto Martinez's side were inches from taking the lead when Spain full-back Pedro Porro stuck out his head and directed a Nuno Mendes shot onto his own crossbar.The winger Yamal had endured a frustrating time up against Mendes, but the Paris Saint-Germain fullback was forced off injured after 56 minutes in a blow to Portugal.The game needed a spark and Ronaldo, well known to Spain from his time at Real Madrid, threw up his arms when a pass went astray.Martinez made double changes on 71 and 83 minutes, but kept Ronaldo on.And in a game that was cagey, Arsenal midfielder Merino won it at the death with a composed finish that was out of keeping with much of what went on before.
